How to read this plan
The Blacktown and Mount Druitt
Hospitals Expansion Project
(BMDH Project) will deliver new
services and facilities at
Blacktown Hospital and Mount
Druitt Hospital in western Sydney.
To make our facilities more
welcoming, we created a
comprehensive arts program to
help create more welcoming , less
institutional spaces which help
reduce anxiety, and promote
health, well-being and recovery.
Stage 1 of our project has now
won 13 national and international
awards, including an International
Academy for Design & Health
Academy Award for best use of art
in public and private spaces
(2017).
In stage 2, we are continuing the
success of our stage 1 projects
with an expanded arts and cultural
program called Kaleidoscope.
Kaleidoscope includes:
Architectural features
designed by our architects
Jacobs
A program of art developed
by the Health and Arts
Research Centre Inc (HARC) in
consultation with our
community
Donated works curated by
our arts team.
This is our story so far.
Some projects have progressed to
design stage, or to the point
where we have commissioned an
artist or work. Where images are
available , we have included them
in this plan.
Others projects still being
developed in consultation with our
staff, patients, carers and
community. To help bring the
concept to life, we have included
images or projects which inspired
the idea.
These images are for inspiration
only, to assist us with further
engagement and decision-making.
The final design or work will be
developed in partnership with the
stakeholders, including patients,
carers, doctors and nurses, artists
and our project team.
An updated arts and culture plan
will be issued at a later stage, with
more definitive concepts.
For more information, please
contact BMDH Project.

BMDH Project stage 2
The multi-award-winning Blacktown and Mount
Druitt Hospitals (BMDH) Expansion Project is
changing the way we care for you.
It includes a major expansion of existing services to
meet increasing demand and the creation of new
services to reduce the need to travel out of the area
for treatment.
The project also includes new clinical technology and
a re-evaluation of how we’re delivering services so
our facilities can support the best contemporary
hospital care.
Stage 1 finished in May 2016 with the opening of the
clinical services building at Blacktown Hospital. Stage
2 is now underway at Mount Druitt Hospital and
Blacktown Hospital.
At Blacktown Hospital, stage 2 will create a new
hospital building in front of the existing buildings and
new facilities for:
Emergency and short stay beds and a new
psychiatric emergency care service
Intensive care unit
Eight new operating theatres
New purpose-built wards for expanded
birthing (with a well-ness model of care),
maternity, women’s health, and newborn
care
New paediatric service with dedicated
emergency department facilities, day stay and
inpatient facilities
Medical imaging, sterilising and non-clinical
support services expansion
Expanded haemodialysis unit for hospital
in-patients and a new regional dialysis centre
for day services, training and education
More parking.
At Mount Druitt, stage 2 projects include:
New Community Dialysis Centre
New Centre for Addiction Medicine
New MRI service
Expanded and enhanced surgical services with
one new digital theatre, pre-admission clinic,
recovery ward.
BMDH Project is already recognised internationally
for its community consultation and consumer
engagement , and our innovative and creative arts
projects are a significant part of our success.

Kaleidoscope arts and cultural plan
Our new stage 2 arts and cultural
program is called Kaleidoscope.
The arts and culture program was
established in 2012 to integrate
art with architecture and respond
to a growing body of research that
shows a correlation between
patient health and supportive
environments.
The purpose of program is to
create more welcoming , less
institutional spaces which help
reduce anxiety, and promote
health, well-being and recovery.
We also wanted our hospital to
reflect the culture and aspirations
of our local community.
Blacktown local government area
is one of the most culturally
diverse in Australia with a mixture
of long-established communities
and recent arrivals, and Australia’s
highest proportion of urban
Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander communities.
Kaleidoscope was selected as a
theme because it represents the
colourful, evolving and dynamic
nature of our hospital and local
community.
Kaleidoscopes are intricate,
beautiful, and ever-changing, but
they are also intriguing and
scientific, which reflects our
medical, research and learning
aspirations.
The coloured glass in a
kaleidoscope mirrors the coloured
glass and distinctive shapes which
form our building façade, and
kaleidoscopes give the holder the
power to influence the patterns or
outcomes - an approach we
honour through our consultation
and engagement strategy.
The kaleidoscope theme can be
creatively interpreted by artists
working on our project.
Consultation and community engagement
To develop the plan, the Health and
Arts Research Centre Inc (HARC) was
commissioned by Health
Infrastructure to consult with our
stakeholders and community.
To date, HARC has consulted with
more than 500 staff, patients, carers,
visitors, volunteers and community
members to inform the plan.
HARC’s research showed that there
was overwhelming support for the
arts created in stage 1, and planning
also revealed that all partner
organisations in stage 1 were proud
of their participation, and were
willing to continue their involvement
in stage 2.
The positive outcomes arising from
the arts program for stage 1
encourage a continuity of themes and
methodology for stage 2, whilst
maintaining a distinct identity for the
new areas.
This approach includes strengthening
partnerships, creating opportunities
for participation and community
cultural development and promotion
of health related themes through
creative activities.
HARC used a range of techniques and
strategies to engage with
communities.
Environmental design research
Focused interviews with users and
key stakeholders
Questionnaires and surveys
Observation of physical traces and
environmental behaviour
Collaborative meetings with BMDH
designers, planners, project
managers and staff.
Creative activities and storytelling
Creation of temporary artworks
involving local communities
Public arts and environmental
research.
HARC is still engaging with groups,
however the trends are strong and
should not change significantly.

Kaleidoscope | BMDH Project Stage 2 Arts and Cultural Plan Progress Report 2017 | Page #
The recommendations from the
community consultation identified
three key findings.
Identity and sense of place
The BMDH arts and cultural program
helps create an identity for the hospital
and assist wayfinding.
Coming to hospital can be stressful,
even confronting for some people, so it
is vital to have a coherent environment
which supports the function and
identity of the hospital, and allows
visitors to fund their way confidently to
the correct destination.
The plan was designed to integrate
with the architecture and design of the
hospital and to create an aesthetically
pleasing environment with a sense of
place.
Engagement and sustainability
The program promotes connection
with users, local communities and
organisations.
It supports the development of new
partnerships, creating opportunities
for further engagement and ongoing
involvement.
Inspiration and innovation
The program seeks to respond to
users’ needs, provide access through
universal design, function as a catalyst
for healthy lifestyles and develop
family-friendly spaces.
Source: HARC Inc community consultation 2016-2017
500 people consulted to date 153 surveys
93% had not been involved in Stage 1 but had high awareness
of the successful art projects to date
Nature and colour were the most popular themes
Most people wanted art that reflected heritage
Waiting rooms and entry areas were a priority
People want art that reflects our multicultural community
and Aboriginal culture
More than half of people valued music, poetry and
performance as well as visual arts

The BMDH Photo Competition invites staff, patients, carers, consumers, volunteers and
community members, local residents and workers to submit their photographs for use in our
new hospital facilities.
The 2014 and 2016 competitions provided a variety of works for the Clinical Services Building
corridors, cancer centre, rehabilitation gym and Building B.
In 2017 and 2018, images will be selected for framed works, wall prints or glass prints in our
stage 2 Mount Druitt Hospital projects, and for the future acute services building.
Framed or mural works will be installed after the building is completed in areas including

Being and Belonging is an exciting, engaging, collaborative consumer-led arts project which
encourages patients to get more involved in their healthcare by expressing their experience
through art, and directly influencing their care environment.
The program uses photography and video to raise awareness of chronic renal disease and
improve quality of life, especially for young adults living with dialysis.
The program has delivered better patient outcomes by creating a more positive and
uplifting physical space which helps reduce tension, address isolation, alleviate boredom
and promote communication. Participation in the young adults support group has
significantly increased, which is critical to this group’s ongoing physical health and mental
well-being.
The project was extended to the new Community Dialysis Centre at Mount Druitt with four
new stories.
‘I have been on dialysis for ten years now. I work fulltime
at Westmead Hospital. Being on dialysis is a change in
lifestyle, you know sometimes you just can’t go about
things you used to do. It is time consuming, but I still
have time to do things and lead a normal life as much as
possible. I do dialysis on Saturday morning so I can go
out to the football or see friends on Saturday night.” Roy,

Mount Druitt Healing gardens
This project was a proposal of local
Aboriginal elders and was designed in
collaboration with Aboriginal artist Danny
Eastwood and Muru Mittigar Aboriginal
Cultural and Education Centre.
It creates a special garden for the Mount
Druitt Hospital Community Dialysis Centre
which can be shared by the nearby Palliative
Care Unit and the rest of the hospital.
Uncle Danny also collaborated with artist
Henryk Topolnicki, from Art Is An Option, to
create two sculptural seats.
The garden includes motifs designed by
Indigenous artists Uncle Danny Eastwood,
rendered into sculpture by artist Henryk
Topolnicki.
The seat and paving are surrounded by
traditional Aboriginal bush tucker, weaving
and healing plants which will create a rich
sensory and tactile garden experience for
patients, carers and staff.
A contemporary fire pit for smoking
ceremonies and celebrations is a central

Artways Artworks will be integrated into the outdoor areas around our
new acute services building, creating a sense of identity and
welcoming everyone to the hospital.
Artways will deliver three public artworks that are closely
connected:
Oases – artworks located in the main pedestrian axis rom
Panorama Parade to Blacktown Hospital main foyer. The
artworks will create stop/rest areas with the support of
sculptural elements. They will create interest, and a sense of
wonder - something unexpected in the landscape, a place to
sit perhaps, a place to come when taking a break or to rest
when in transit to and from the hospital.
Paving Features - designed paving details to create
continuity with internal design elements and reinforce
wayfinding and orientation.
Walking Distance Markers - artist-designed elements will
mark the walking distance in a walking circuit. This includes
the signage at the beginning of the walking circuit with
information about the length of the track and
encouragement signage every 100 metres and at the
end. The Markers will be part of the hospital’s planned
walking circuits and will promote an active lifestyle for staff,
and other users.

Textiles have traditionally been an important part of women’s lives and
the birth of a child often means presenting special hand made works for
the new baby. This proposed series of works will be made with the
support of community groups and represent the transition from
traditional to contemporary. The work will speak about different cultures,
patterns, and colours to enliven entry to Maternity, as well as patient and
