General Services team
tour ticks the boxes Our General Services team gave the new Acute Services Building the once over
this week as part of our commissioning readiness program.
They spent a couple of hours checking utility rooms, bathrooms, patient rooms
and circulation areas for any potential cleaning, patient transport or other issues.
Everything from the soap dispensers to the fire stairs was thoroughly inspected.
The cleaner staff were pleased to see that, on their recommendation,
handwashing equipment had been relocated to make hand hygiene easier.
They also checked the curtain fittings, doors to patient rooms for ease of bed
access, beverage areas and garbage zones.
Thanks to our great team for the thorough feedback.
Commissioning of the new hospital is expected to begin shortly.
There will be opportunities for all staff to attend a familiarisation tour prior to
opening.

Between Earth and Sky is a new
work by local Darug artist Leanne
Tobin designed to welcome people
from everywhere onto Darug land
and wish them safety and comfort
while they are here.
It includes glass panels featuring
words of welcome in 12 Indigenous
languages, a figure of woman with a
dilly bag, and ravens. The word
“Warami”, meaning “Welcome” in
Darug language, forms part of the
work.
Artist Leanne Tobin worked closely
with the Darug Tribal Corporation,
Darug Custodial Aboriginal
Corporation, Blue Mountain
Aboriginal and Cultural Resource
Centre and other agencies to create
the work.
“The woman figure is used to
personify Mother Earth, the giver of
life and provider of all resources,”
Leanne said in her artist statement.
“She also symbolises the role
women play in communities
throughout the world, continuing
age-old ceremonies that take one
throughout life: from birth to
death.”
The raven, commonly known as the
black crow or Butu Wargan in Darug
language, is a constant presence
seen everywhere.
The Darug and other Aboriginal
groups throughout Australia see the
crow as a messenger bird and
keeper of Old knowledge.
They are thought to be conduits
between the spirit world and the
earthly plane, with magical and
visionary powers. This belief is also
held in many other places around
the world including India and
Europe.
Local Darug stories tell of the crow
being a favoured form of the shape
shifters, or Clevermen, because of its
high intelligence and ability to adapt
to different situations.
Crows are believed to convey
messages from the spirit world to
Earth, and take messages and
prayers back.
In the installation, the woman can
be seen in communication with the
spirit world via the crows above her.
The panels allude to nets and
weavings used to collect foods to
nourish and heal, and references the
‘safety net’ of care delivered by
doctors, nurses and staff at the
hospital.
The Indigenous words of welcome
were sourced from the keepers of
each language group and represent
some of the 50 languages spoken in
NSW.
Mother Earth
welcomes you

ASB
Roundup
Much like Santa, our
project team made a list
and they’ve been checking
it twice.
They have now ticked off
thousands of items on the
room data sheets as we get
ready for commissioning.
Department
representatives have also
been completing user
acceptance testing and
reviewing their areas.
We take your comfort
seriously, so we also tested
the seats in the new level 5
lecture theatre. This 44-
seat space is specially
designed for education,
with large screens, room
for a patient bed, and
standing room at the back
for busy staff who are just
popping in to observe.
We even washed the
windows.
Looking good in satellite imaging
Specialist contractors washing the building
Defects checking - one room down, 1999 to go.
Checking fittings in Peri-Op
New lecture theatre seat comfort level - 10 out of 10.
Imaging team checking the new satellite imaging in ED
Exec team in ICU for planning discussions

Volunteering for good National Volunteer Week starts 20 May so don’t forget to
thank a volunteer! Hospital volunteers are invited to
morning tea in the Hospital Street Gathering Place on

New Geri MAU Blacktown Hospital’s B35 now includes a Geriatric Medical
Assessment Unit as part of the ongoing improvements to
the way we manage patients in the hospital. The new pull
model ensure patients aged 70+ (and who meet the
required guidelines) are managed by the geriatric medicine
team. For more info, speak to the geriatric medicine team.
360 view of the future Blacktown Hospital is helping transform the way
universities teach electrical engineering by participating in a
unique 360-degree immersive learning project.
University of NSW School of Electrical Engineering Senior
Lecturer in Energy Systems Dr Jayashri Ravishankar said the
highly specialised course will benefit engineers working on
body cardiac protection, electrical wiring systems and
electrical safety systems in hospitals.
“It was difficult to add a lab component for the course
because of the nature of the content,” Dr Ravishankar said.
“The 360 degree immersive learning experience captures
the electrical safety aspects involved in a hospital
environment.
“This really increases engagement, provides a deeper
learning experience, encourages self-learning and takes
them on site in a way that would not normally be possible.”
UNSW educational developer Danny Tan said “it’s a bit like
Google street view”.
“It’s a good tool for learning because it puts students in the
driver’s seat and essentially delivers information on
demand, unlike more passive traditional learning. They can
go into the environment and explore it,” Danny said.

Perfect timing. Leanne Tobin’s strong, proud Mother Earth figure now welcomes everyone to Blacktown Hospital. It’s fitting given it’s both Mother’s Day and International Nurses’ Day this Sunday. Happy Mother's Day to all the mums, and those we love like mums. And thank you to all our nurses.
