Atefeh Hekmat
Western Sydney artist Atefeh Hekmat was born 1972 in Iran. She has a degree in Psychology from Azad University, Tehran. She also studied photography and has worked as a professional photographer for Emetis Talar Wedding Function Centre, Tehran. She has been painting landscapes and figurative work for the last 15 years under the tutelage of Ostad Jafar Shahir.
After opening her own art gallery, Atefeh developed several exhibitions with the support of art teachers and friends. She was invited to work with Tehran Municipality, a job offer she was not able to take as she had to leave the country and come to Australia to seek asylum.
She has since shown her work at SSI’s Art is Our Voice exhibition and a number of community and women-focused events. She is one of the founding members of the Iranian Women Visual Artists Collective-Australia. She runs demonstrations, workshops and private art classes.
Atefeh’s artistic practice centres on oil and acrylic painting on canvas. She has a great love of nature and her works predominately reflect the changing moods of the landscape and her inner journey as an artist.

The visual world of birds, buildings, cats, circuses, clouds, colours, fabrics, fishes, flowers, fruit, humans, insects, landscapes, patterns, plants, pottery, seascapes, shells and trees has always given me delicious delight.
I’ve responded to these subjects in a celebratory, naïve and decorative manner. My colourful creations are also based on places that have moved me, such as Central Australia and Pittwater and now and then I’ve depicted an emotion that has tripped me up.
In 2009 my husband died and my paintings changed significantly. I dropped the decorative images and my themes changed to a darker moodier vision. Magical creatures appeared in my pictures representing motifs of friendship, death, sorrow, walking, angels and the unexpected. For a brief time I painted in black and white until thankfully colour elbowed its way back in.
After completing a memoir in 2016 - A Book of Not Forgetting - my work has returned to a celebratory style which often includes whimsical creatures.
I look forward to the new painting directions that the future will bring.

OWEN THOMPSON
Uplifting landscape images capturing glimpsed moments of beauty and peace form the subject content of the watercolours in this exhibition.
From short visits and longer stays on the NSW south coast, in the Blue Mountains and in the Snowy Mountains, the works aim to express Owen’s passion for the sublime qualities of Australia’s natural heritage.
Within a few hours drive of each other are the diverse environs of the southern coastline, the dramatic sandstone escarpments of the Blue Mountains and the harsh, rugged beauty of the snow dusted alpine regions.
The images presented are largely the result of Owen’s careful representation and interpretation of photographic records of his journeys, although he does sometimes paint directly on site. They are clearly realistic and yet transcend mere reproduction of photographs and seek to convey a more emotional response to the landscape.
It is his hope that these images will connect with a viewer’s own experience of and love for our landscape

Resonance
‘The spiritual energy that connects to nature drives my need to portray the beauty of the present. My paintings communicate notions of Chi-energy inviting the viewer into a calm meditative space’.Haruyo Morita Haruyo is a Japanese artist based in Western Sydney. Her painting technique is rooted in Japanese tradition (she uses Japanese calligraphy ink, washi paper, mineral pigment and gold leaf), however the paintings she creates are far from traditional. They are spontaneous, organic and originate from deep inside her being. In a world that has become disconnected from spirituality, Haruyo believes her art can make people more aware of their spiritual side.

Ghasan Saaid
My painting for this exhibition expresses simplicity, strength, energy and foreign forces; the longer you look, the more you observe. The layers of life are metaphors for my art. I use layers, colours, shapes, symbols and textures to create and search for new realties and artistic expression.
My painting process develops through the use of different techniques; I divide the painting into cells based on my scope of vision and the overall balance of the artwork—each cell plays the role of a single painting and together they interact harmoniously to evoke an infinite number of possible meanings. They reveal and conceal, build up symbols, stories and motives. I explore the lived experience of time, space and nature, as well as the mythological and imaginary in time, space and nature. I then manipulate the results with issues in our contemporary times and in the ‘everyday’.
These interactions intermingle with the viewer’s eye, mind and accumulated memory, offering up different observations each time they look at the painting.
Ghasan, born in Khartoum 1973, graduated with First Class Honors in Painting from the College of Fine and Applied Arts, Sudan University of Science and Technology, Khartoum in 1995. He then taught Fine Arts at the Ahfad University in Sudan, and also applied his talents to Theatre and Dance. In December 2005 he graduated - with distinction - in the Advanced Diploma in Fine Art (2003-2005), from The Sydney Gallery School, Sydney. In June 2008 he finished a Masters Degree in photo media at Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney University
Before immigrating to Australia in 1998 he exhibited extensively overseas in Sudan, Syria, Jordan, Nairobi, Paris and London. Ghasan is currently working in the area of photography, painting, filmmaking, and installation. He has had more than 80 solo and group exhibitions, predominantly in Sydney, Melbourne, Norway and Hong Kong.
