After a long summer break, Antique Friends are getting back together to begin their fall month-ly meetings where they will learn about unique antique pieces and do some shopping, of course.

Meetings will resume on Thursday, September 26 at the home of Linda Godfrey. Linda will show her many antiques and share their history. This should be an interesting time and a chance to catch-up.

If you would like to join our group, bring a guest or have any questions, please con-tact Lynn Guilbault at 936-597-8851 or email at [email protected].

Health Care Seminar, Thursday, September 12

Bentwater resident Chris Uzelmeier snapped this shot of the bright summer moon, which was 14 percent larger than normal because it was closer to Earth at the time. The photo appeared on KPRC’s morning show several days later. Thanks, Chris, for once again sharing the beau-ty of Bentwater with the greater Houston area. Even the moon shines brighter here… THIS IS THE LIFE!

The BCA is planning an informative health care seminar to be held at the Yacht Club on Thursday, September 12. A recent BCA survey identified health care and related issues as key topics of interest for Bentwater residents.

Very few subjects are as important as the health and welfare of individuals and/or their families; however, the understanding and pre-planning required to provide needed security is often neglected. Preparing for your ongoing health care needs and security for the future requires pre-planning. The seminar will offer important information on the preparation and creation of advanced medical directives, power of attorney documents, wills and more.

In addition and equally important, the seminar will focus on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly referred to as “Obama Care.”

The seminar will explain the impact of new legislation and address its impact on Medicare and supplemental Medicare coverage as well as clarification of providers accepting Medicare. It will also provide important information on what you should

know about acute and long-term care that is not covered by standard medical plans or Medicare coverage.

There will be two highly qualified speakers to lead this impor-tant seminar, Wendy Lambie, an Associate Attorney with The Woodlands based Strong Firm, and Kenton Henry, owner of All Plan Med Quote and Allplaninsurance.com.

You can register for this important seminar by following the directions presented below:• Go to www.bentwater.com.• Click “Member Login” on the top right-hand corner of the

web page.• Enter your personal Bentwater website username and password.• Click on “Calendar” on the left-hand side of the web page.• Locate and then “select” this event on calendar: September

12, 2013 – BCA Healthcare Forum• Registration form is at the bottom of the web page. Once it is closer to the event, it should appear automatically on the Member Home Page in the “Upcoming Events” sec-tion when you first login, thus eliminating the need to search through the calendar mentioned above.

Little girls often dream of becoming an actress, going to Hol-lywood, wearing beautiful gowns and socializing with celebri-ties, however, few ever realize those dreams. At the September luncheon, on September 9, members of the Bentwater Ladies Organization will have the privilege of hearing how one little girl’s fantasy came true.

Lindsey Morgan, daughter of Bentwater residents Ed and Alice Bradley, and starlet of the long running daytime television show, General Hospital, set her sights on an acting career after appear-ing in several high school productions. She pursued a degree in fine arts, specializing in theater arts, after acceptance to the University of Texas. She continued to fine tune her career by booking commercials, print ads and guest roles during college. Morgan made the move to Los Angeles, believing she would have more acting opportunities after realizing her talent was beginning to be recognized. Her decision was soon rewarded with roles in the acclaimed films Detention and DISconnected. In addition to film roles, she has appeared in television shows including How I Met Your Mother, Happy Endings and Think Line. She made her debut in May, 2012 and continues as a regular on General Hospital, where she plays Kristina Corinthos Davis, the daughter of a notorious mobster.

Although Lindsey has only been on the Hollywood scene two years, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in April, 2013. It is probably safe to say Bentwater has not heard the last of this glamorous young lady!

If you can’t make it to the September luncheon at the Yacht Club, there are plenty of other fabulous BLO events to enjoy. Here’s a quick look at what’s in store for members this fall:• September 5 - Carla Cook will host a Membership

Drive Coffee• September 9 - Luncheon at the Yacht Club. The program

will feature Lindsey Morgan, star of television’s General Hospital and daughter of Bentwater residents Alice and Ed Bradley.

• September 21 - The Bentwater Ladies Organization will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a gala, You‘ve Come a Long Way Baby, at the Yacht Club, and promises to be something you won’t want to miss.

• October 6 - Fall picnic• October 11 - Luncheon recognizing “the Artists of

Bentwater.”• October 23 - The annual Golf and Gambling Bus Trip to

L’Auberge Du Lac Casino; registration is currently open.• November 3 - Bric-A-Brac Market• November 7 – Houston Nutcracker Market Bus Trip• November 9 – Chili for Charities Cook Off • November 11 - Luncheon with a theatre production. Stage

Right Creighton Theatre will be featured just for the Bentwa-ter Ladies’ entertainment.

• December 2 - Bentwater Ladies will be baking cookies for the staff, with delivery in the Harbor View Room at the Yacht Club

VICKI ASKEW –Age 93, playing competitive tennis (And not in the Senior Division)

Queen of the Court, Vicki Askew, was surrounded by her subjects as they celebrated her 93rd birthday. She plays competitive tennis, two or three times a week, and is amazing in attitude, ability, and stamina. It just goes to show that age is mind over matter. If it doesn’t matter to you, it won’t matter to others. All things are possible, so follow Vicki‘s example and get out there and try.

For all of you interested in a sport or exercise, try any of the wonderful things that Bent-water has to offer. If you think you can’t do it… Vicki is living proof that you can.

The game of bridge is as fascinating as it is challenging. Bent-water residents host many party, marathon and duplicate bridge games in their homes and at the Country Club. However, six Bentwater residents have taken bridge to a higher level. They compete locally, regionally and nationally at duplicate bridge games sanctioned by The American Contract Bridge League.

Duplicate bridge is a variation of bridge that mandates the same bridge hands be played by all pairs in the competition. The chal-lenge is to find a better line of play than the other pairs. Typi-cally 24 - 32 bridge hands are played per session. At sanctioned games players compete for Master Points. As points accumulate players advance through the Life Master ranks.

Mary Anne Woessner is a Gold Life Master with more than 3,000 points. Joe Everette and Martha Zilbermann are Silver Life Masters with more than 1,000 points. Nancy Gray and Pat Horsley are Bronze Life Masters with at least 700 points and Jan Walker is a Life Master with more than 400 points. While attending the national bridge tournament in Nashville, TN in 2007, Mary Anne had the interesting experience of playing against Bill Gates.

There are three sanctioned duplicate clubs in the area. The Bridge Club of Houston, located in Spring, is a full service bridge facility with daily games for beginners, intermediate and advanced players. The club is a nonprofit and run by the mem-bers. Lessons are offered for players who want to learn to play bridge and for those wanting to improve their game. Two sanc-tioned clubs in April Sound hold games on Monday, Wednes-day and Friday.

Call any of the above mentioned players for additional information.

Bob Chiste AwardsBob Chiste at his Bentwater home

Bob Chiste’s business career accomplishments embody an impressive list of both private and public companies in which he utilized his visionary skills and perseverance to generate value in the energy and technology sectors. He has functioned as CEO of Allwaste, Inc. and Comverge, Inc., both major public compa-nies, as well as in some combination of CEO/Chairman/Presi-dent or founding investor to grow and diversify many newly founded or fledgling companies under his leadership. The list is too long to present here, but the specific example of Comverge will illustrate the point.

In 2001 Bob assumed control of a division of a small public company with sales of $10 million and took it private with venture capital. He refocused the business model from simply being a hardware supplier to a complete clean energy sup-plier for utilities and took the company public again in 2007 as Comverge, ultimately attaining sales of $100 million, a market value of $600 million.

Over his career Bob has considered himself fortunate to have met and worked with many of the giants of the energy industry: T. Boone Pickens, Steve Jobs, Bob McNair, Rich Kinder, Ken Lay and Chuck Watson.

Bob’s roots are in the Trenton, New Jersey area. He received a B.A. in math from Trenton State and both a law degree and an MBA from Rutgers. These academic tools provided the founda-tion for his business success. He met his future wife, Michele, in high school, continued to date her in college, and they eventu-ally married in 1971 while he was in law school. Michele is a nurse who was able to manage her career and raise five children

with Bob along the way. Their three sons live in different parts of the U.S., and their daughters live in Dubai and Singapore. They now have 5 grandchildren as well.

Bob formally retired in 2009, but he remains very active as a venture capitalist and as a current board member for one public and three private companies. Through his firm, Sorfina Capital, he also mentors up and coming CEO’s with his expe-rience in raising capital, team building, change management, strategic planning, organizational development and mergers and acquisitions.

Bob’s mantras are: communicate-communicate-communicate, then communicate some more; think outside the box, and no got-cha’s. Bob has received numerous awards throughout his career. What he’s most proud of in his professional life: The Comverge success story and an award he received as a 16 year old when he was named the honor carrier for a local newspaper. Those early entrepreneurial roots show you the kind of guy he is!

After previously owning several properties in Bentwater, Bob and Michele relocated from west Houston to their spectacular waterfront Bentwater home in 2011. Bob’s hobbies are golf, travel with Michele (6 countries in the last 6 month) and play-ing the drums. He has been the drummer in all of the recent Bentwater City Limits productions. Bob took up golf when they moved to Bentwater, and under Mark Massengale’s instruction, his handicap has steadily come down.

Bob and Michele thoroughly enjoy the lifestyle and many friends in Bentwater. This is the life!

The green thumbs of Bentwater are get-ting back to business!

After a long hot summer, Garden Club Meetings will resume this month! Mark your calendars. The next meeting will be on September 5 at 2 pm at the Yacht Club Harborview Room.

Dear Property Owner:

I’m sure you will agree that we were all born with unique talents and abilities. Like fin-gerprints, we are all very different. Many of you have led very successful lives with thriv-ing careers; some have talents many of us can only dream of having. Whether you are a top-notch executive, a talented musician

or painter, or a retired stay-at-home mom, you all have at least one thing in common – you call Bentwater “home.”

As Bentwater homeowners, you are all equal. One resident is not considered better than others because he has a bigger yard or drives a nicer car. There are no special privileges for having the cutest child on the block or having the best golf swing.

When it comes to deed restrictions, everyone should comply with the deed restrictions to keep Bentwater the amazing com-munity we love.

MessageGeneral Manager's

POA General Manager Dawn Cleboski

It is the duty of the POA to remind residents of these responsi-bilities and make sure everyone is living up to the responsibili-ties you agreed to when you purchased your property.

Please review the following article: The Benefits of Living in a Deed Restricted Community as well as several deed restrictions we’ve included.

Deed restrictions cover a multitude of additional issues of which you may not be aware. If you do not have a copy of the restric-tions for your section, you may wish to purchase a copy from our office. The copying fee is $20.

Let’s continue to work together in protecting, preserving and enhancing our beautiful Bentwater Life.

Isn’t it nice driving through the Bent-water gates and not seeing construction debris in a nearby yard? Don’t you enjoy the beautifully landscaped yards on your street? There are numerous benefits of living in a deed restricted community.

• The aesthetics of the neighborhood are upheld to a high standard.

• Common areas are accessible and well groomed for all to enjoy.

• A quality lifestyle is maintained with consistency and excellence.

• The community atmosphere is encouraged by respecting the rights and needs of neighbors.

• Property values are enhanced while potential buyers are more attracted to the pristine look and high standards of the community.

Along with the benefits of living in a deed restricted community are responsibilities.

• Know the restrictions for your specific section. Bentwater contains more than 90 sections, with each section containing its own set of restrictions, although there is a common thread throughout.

• Assist in maintaining the quality of life in your neighborhood by adhering to the restrictions.

• Remit your assessments on a timely basis to keep operating costs down.

• Respect the rights and needs of your neighbors when your actions or lack of actions could be detrimental to the quality of life of those near you.

From time to time a property owner may receive a letter from the POA regarding a deed restriction violation. If you are like most people, when you receive a notice that there may be something amiss on your property or in your household that affects your neighbors or community, you imme-diately become concerned. We are asking you to recognize that the POA has an obligation to inquire about reported issues, something we think you would expect and appreciate if you were the one requesting the POA to research a situation.

We make every effort to ensure that a violation has occurred prior to admin-istrating a letter, realizing there will be times when we make an error. Our goal and intent is to be able to work together to protect, preserve and enhance your property values.

Good things to know:

• Storage of vehicles – Your garage spaces should be utilized to store your vehicles. Parking in your driveway should only pertain to additional vehi-cles above the allotted amount for the garage. Bentwater residents should never park their vehicles on the street.

• Landscaping and Lawns – Should be well maintained.

• Exterior Lights - An ornamental light (maximum of 150 watts) and pole, as approved by the Architectural Control Committee, shall be located

on the front of the lot next to the driveway entrance. The ornamental light shall be connected to the electri-cal system in the house located on this lot and be provided with a photo cell so that the light is on during the hours of darkness. It is the owner's responsibility to maintain the orna-mental light and pole in good work-ing order at all times.

• Pets – There is a leash law in Mont-gomery County as well as a leash policy in Bentwater. Ensure your pet remains contained on your property, and if off property, should be leashed at all times. As a responsible pet owner and neighbor, take appropriate steps to refrain your dog from bark-ing and causing a nuisance to those around you. When you are not home, your pet must be kept inside your house. Please pick up after your pet.

• Golf carts – Golf carts must have a current permit issued by the Bent-water® Country Club and may only be operated by individuals holding a current driver’s license valid in the State of Texas.

• Improvements – Any improvements made to the exterior of your property must have an approval from the Bent-water Architectural Control Com-mittee prior to having any work done. Please inquire at the POA office for the correct application form, fee and meeting schedule.

Men of Bentwater Hotter -‘N- Hell Open

MOBsters recently endured the harsh summer heat to play their second MOB sponsored golf tournament of the season. Each year they choose three locations to play golf and put their swings to good use. In May MOB members traveled to Lake Charles, LA for a tournament; and in July, they stayed close to home and enjoyed the Hotter-‘N –Hell tournament on the Weiskopf Course. They greatly appreciated the cloud coverage that made the day a bit more bearable.

The last MOB sponsored golf tournament of the year is this month. On September 25, MOBsters are heading to High Meadow Ranch in Magnolia.

Participants must be current MOB members. Membership forms can be requested from Jim Jacobs, MOB membership director, at [email protected].

Neighborhood WatchBack to School Safety

Now that our children have returned to school, it is important that we all make the safety of our children a top priority, espe-cially on our roadways.

Here are some safety tips to follow:• When children take the bus to school, it is extremely impor-

tant that they take proper safety precautions. Teach them how to stay safe on and around school buses.

• All motorists need to safely share the road with school buses and children walking to their bus stop. Remember, when a school bus stops and its red lights are flashing, all motorists MUST STOP behind the bus.

• A final reminder: do not use cell phones in school zones.

Let’s all do our share in keeping our children safe.

True Texas, Jerry hails from Madisonville while Nancy is from Yoakum, TX, although they consider themselves native Hous-tonians. Formerly Chevrolet dealers in the Houston area (those of us who have lived in this area for a while have heard of Rich-ardson Chevrolet) and developers of Stow-Away Marina on Lake Conroe, they are now retired and are living in their new spectacular home. Note: They sold Stow-Away Marina to their daughter and son-in-law, Kellie and Lamar Anderson, who also are Bentwater residents. Back to their spectacular home. This creative piece of art that is now their home was designed by Shane Jenkins, an Aggie, whose office is in San Antonio, and built by Bentwater resident Roy Van den Heuvel. It is a master-piece! We wish them health and happiness.

Texas Department of State Health Ser-vices has confirmed four human cases of West Nile Virus in Texas in 2013.

As of July 30, there were no reported cases in Montgomery County, but state health officials recommend everyone in Texas take precautions to prevent being infected with the virus.

West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus. The symptoms of the severe form of West Nile Virus include headache, high fever,

neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis. West Nile Fever, the milder form of the illness, may cause fever, headache, body aches and occasionally a skin rash on the trunk of the body and swollen lymph glands.

The Department of State Health Services reminds Texans to reduce the risk of exposure to West Nile, you must reduce contact with mosquitos.

You can do this by:• eliminating standing water and other

mosquito breeding areas• making sure door, porch and window

screens are in good condition• using a repellent that contains DEET,

picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 when outdoors.

SympathiesCarolyn Bolmanski Lowrey

Bentwater resident Carolyn Bolmanski Lowrey, 73, passed away on July 7, 2013, of natural causes. She was born to the late Wallace and Hannah Bolmanski, in Goose Creek (Baytown), Texas on July 25, 1939. Carolyn graduated in 1957 from Robert E. Lee High School in Bay-town and worked most of her career for Exxon. She is survived by her loving hus-band, Jerry Lowrey; sons Scott Lowrey and Derek Grayson; grandchildren Gra-cie Lowrey, Ava Lowrey, Lorelei Lowrey

and Lyndon Grayson; daughters-in-law Amy Lowrey and Kelley Grayson, and sister, Gay Lynn Combs, and her hus-band, John R Combs.

Everyone who knew Carolyn knew how much she loved Bentwater. She and her husband originally moved to Bentwater in 1998 and then moved to a different Bentwater home so they could live on the golf course. In 2006 they moved to Austin to be closer to family, but

just four years later, Carolyn and Jerry missed Bentwater so much, they decided to move back.

Carolyn was very active in BLO and enjoyed playing Bridge, scrapbooking and watching daytime soap operas.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A donation to the American Liver Foundation in Carolyn’s name is appreciated.

Truly enjoying the summer are Abby, age 8, Darian, age 15, and Caroline, age 5.

A group of Bentwater residents recently traveled to Europe, focusing time on the Bavarian region of Germany and the beau-tiful lakes and mountains of Switzerland. The group also visited Strasbourg in the Alsace region of France and the Black Forest in Germany.

The journey began in Munich where the group enjoyed a tra-ditional dinner outing at one of its famous “Biergartens,” the Augustiner Keller. Following a privately guided tour of the city the next morning, they journeyed to Regensberg, Germany, to board the Avalon Affinity for a memorable 9-day cruise on the Danube, Main and Rhine Rivers. Highlights of the river adventure included visits to fascinating medieval cities along the way, including Rudesheim, Bamberg, Rothenberg, Kitzin-gen, Heidelberg and Wurzburg - plus a beautiful afternoon on

the river enjoying the famous Lorelei statue and the medieval castles, which populate the picturesque mountains surrounding the Rhine Gorge. Another highlight of the trip was a visit to Nuremberg, which included guided visits to Hitler’s notorious Zeppelin Field rallying grounds and the historical museum which chronicles the rise and fall of the Third Reich.

After disembarking in Basel, Switzerland, the group traveled by private coach through the beautiful Swiss countryside to Zurich for a three-night stay. On the way, the group visited the famous Rheinfall, the largest waterfall in Europe, venturing by boat into the turbulence of the waterfall. The following two days were spent visiting beautiful Lake Lucerne and the nearby moun-tains, Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Titlis, including cable car visits to the summits to enjoy snow and spectacular views.

Bentwater resident and photographer Dave Clements recently had the opportunity to travel in Iceland with several other photogra-phers. Although Iceland has never been on Clements’ Bucket List, when offered the opportunity to travel to the European island, he thought, “why not!”

“Since I was a child I had always heard 'Iceland was green and Greenland was icy.' I was never sure if that were true or not. I can now confirm there is a lot of very pretty green in Iceland,”

said Clements. “But make no mistake - glaciers and lava con-sume a significant amount of the land mass in Iceland.”

Clements said he wore four layers of clothing up top most every day plus long johns, and on some level, it was fun wearing all those clothes in July and feeling comfortable!

What also made the trip unique were 20 plus hours of daylight – Clements called it a curse for sleeping but a blessing for photography.

Exploring the Inca Ruins in Peru

Travel South AmericaGene and Marilyn Colbert recently organized a South Ameri-can trip for several Bentwater residents. Those participating were Mike and Joan Castleberry, Bob and Sally Bierman, Howard and Sally Tinsman, Ron and Brenda Clements, Dick Drewlowe, Marcia Gardner and Jack and Barb Strouts. The trip included several airline trips around Peru and Ecuador. It began

in Lima, Peru, and then continued to Cusco and Machu Picchu, the center of the world at the equator in Quito, Ecuador. The trip finished with wildlife viewing among the Galapagos Islands which are about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Probably the most notable and popular wildlife species was the blue footed booby, common in the Galapagos.

Four friends from Bentwater enjoyed a 21 day trip to Japan and experienced many of the cultural treasures of Japan. Mary and Charles Peterson, Linda Pierce and Janice Slaughter toured the country in April - the month when the cherry blossoms are everywhere in beautiful abundance. While Japan is one of the world's most modern countries, it retains parts of its ancient past in its customs and daily living habits. The tour included stays in Tokyo (the capital city), Hakoni (a traditional mountain resort), Kanazawa (city with rich Samurai history), Kyoto (former imperial capital of Japan) and Hiroshima. Along the way, with the cooperation of the weather, they had multiple opportunities to view beautiful Mt. Fuji. They rode in planes, local trains, bullet trains, sub-ways, local buses and tour buses.

At each stop the group enjoyed beautiful Japanese gardens, tra-ditional Buddhist and Shinto temples and local markets. They were guests in a local home for tea and biscuits, participated in a Zen meditation at a Buddhist temple, picked vegetables in a community garden and learned how to make sushi and rice cakes. At a home music studio they were entertained by the host couple with a traditional Japanese music performance and received instruction in the use of the koto (a Japanese stringed instrument) and the shakuhachi ( Japanese flute). These were just a few of the many highlights.

Although they were far away and in a very different culture, they kept a copy of Bentwater Life to remember friends and family back home.

September marks the kickoff of the 2013 Bentwater United Way (BUW) pledge campaign.

“Our slogan, Bentwater Cares!, signifies the ongoing commitment and generosity of Bentwater residents in helping improve the lives of people here in Montgomery County,” said BUW Leadership Committee Chairman Patrick O’Neil in announcing the kickoff.

“Bentwater is distinct in that it’s the only neighborhood in the nation with an individualized campaign directly supporting local United Way programs,” O’Neil pointed out. “United Way contributions from Bentwater residents stay in Montgomery County to directly improve and change the lives of people here.” Bentwater contributions, he added, support many pressing com-munity priorities, such as:• Moving people out of poverty• Facilitating access to affordable and quality health care• Helping people cope with challenging circumstances and

develop resiliency • Preventing and treating drug and alcohol abuse• Providing immediate temporary assistance in the event of

personal crisis

“For example, our contributions help people learn to read, teach relevant job skills, feed and transport senior adults, shelter abused children and women and repair homes,” O’Neil said. “Without our donations, the local, independently funded programs that help people every day wouldn’t be here when they’re needed most.”

The Bentwater United Way goal for 2013 is $145,000. Pledge cards and return envelopes will soon be mailed to all Bentwa-ter residents. The annual fundraising thermometer will again be erected in front of the Fitness Center so that residents can watch their pledges count as the mercury rises toward the top.

“The thermometer helps people in Bentwater see that every contribution counts, no matter the amount,” said O’Neil.
