This foundation fund has been created to provide financial aid to employees of the Bentwater POA, the Bentwater Yacht and Country Club and Bentwater Sales Corporation as well as their spouses, children, grandchil-dren, and/or legal dependents seeking higher education. A day-long celebration encompassing golf and tennis events as well as a Charter Member reception, a heart-warming program honoring the co-developers of Bentwater, the late Bruce Belin and his wife, Mary Ann Belin, ending with a fabulous concert from “Duck Soup”, the famed band of the PGA tour, under a star-studded sky on a just-right temperature night (what other kind would we have at Bentwater?)

While only one team could win, everyone celebrated as The 25th Anniversary Grass Court Event drew a crowd and created memories of a fun-packed tennis social. The Miller Red Team coached by Mike Doty and his players, Greg Etchison, JT Harding, Terry Karka, Kevin Parsley, Dave Boller, Gary Sewell, Vicky Russell, Debbie Amoneno, Sandy Harding, Vickie Kruszka, Joyce Sewell and Cathy Karka competed against the Weiskopf Blue Team, coached by Assistant Professional Tyler

His team included EG Amoneno, Jackie Neagle, John Russell, Reuben Morgensteren, Troy Maddox, Troy Ortale, Amy Wallingford, Brigitte Maddox, Cynthia Jansen, Karen Etchison, Laura Kubiak and Tracy MacKinnon. The teams got to sample the feeling of playing on a real grass court. While the Miller Red took the victory over the Weiskopf Blue, it was a day that will go down in Bentwater history and one they won’t soon forget.

Mary Ann Guseman Voss

Gregory Dean McCartney, 43, son of Bentwa-ter resident Dot Jensen, passed quietly in his sleep on May 22, while vaca-

tioning with his family in San Antonio.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 11 years, Tara Parent McCartney, and daughters, Avery, 8, and Amelia, 3. He also leaves behind his mother, Dorothy

Mary Ann Guseman Voss, age 74, passed away April 4, 2012 surround-ed by her loving family follow-ing a coura-

geous battle with cancer. Ann was born August 17, 1937 to Oliver and Gladys Guseman. She attended Milby High School where she met the love of her life and husband of 56 years, Robert.

Ann’s greatest love was her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Robert K. Voss, and children Bobby Voss and his wife, Stefanie; Laura Cassoni; and Karla Burch and her husband, Ken. She

McCartney Jensen, and husband, Rich-ard; sister Sheila DeBriscoe and husband, David; brother, Douglas McCartney and wife, Mims; sister Alisa Cox and hus-band, Mark; and numerous other family members and a host of loving friends.

Greg was Project Manager for Hatch Mott MacDonald and was one of the “founding fathers” of the company’s pipe-line group.

Greg’s wife and two girls were an incred-ible source of pride for him. He had an

She had two great grand-children, Grady and Jackson Burch. Other family members include sisters-in-law Suzan Allman and husband, Tommy; Karon Syracuse and husband, Michael; Aunt Melba Reynolds; Uncle and Aunt Lou; Sandy Askew and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ann made so many friends in her life from St. Christopher’s grade school to Milby High School to retirement in Bentwater. Ann and Robert moved to Bentwater in December of 1992 and owned the 95th house built here. Ann

was involved in so many activities. How she dearly loved her card games and all the friends she played with. Getting the house ready for her turn to host was a task she looked forward to, not to men-tion the trips to Coushatta she often took with all her Bentwater friends. She wanted to list you all by name, but as you could imagine the list would be very long.

The family wishes to thank EVERY-ONE who has been a part of this jour-ney. The cards, prayers, food, visits and tokens of love were greatly appreciated and helped Ann through her battle with cancer. Ann made a huge impact on everyone who met her and she brought out the best in everyone. If you knew her, consider yourself blessed.

Family vacations always included something unique like heli-copter rides without doors or boating in alligator-infested waters. He ended every day with tickling, playing, and laughing with his daughters.

Bentwater’s Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restric-tions, reads, in part:

“The only motorized vehicles allowed on the roads and street ease-ments in the Subdivision shall be golf carts with a current permit issued by the Bentwater Country Club” and further,

“Vehicles, regardless of type, may only be operated by individuals holding a current driver’s license valid in the State of Texas”.

Any violation of the rules may result in a sanction by the Asso-ciation of one or more of the following:

A. Warning of a violation

B. Fines charged to the owner for the violation:1. First violation $100.002. Second violation $500.003 Each occurrence thereafter $500.00

C. If the owner continues to violate the rules after the imposi-tion of the fines as stated above, the Association may then revoke the golf cart permit for up to 60 days or, in the case of continued violations after the initial suspension, per-manently prohibit the owner from using a golf cart on the streets within Bentwater®.

The registered owner is responsible for the golf cart, whether or not they are present during reported infractions.

Requires current permit from the Country Club and licensed driver

North Shore Republican Women awarded scholarships in May to two graduating seniors at Willis and Montgomery High Schools. The $1,000 awards went to Meghan Ripkowski of Willis, granddaughter of Bentwater residents Ted and Karyn Lutzenburg and Amanda Blair of Montgomery. NSRW gives a $1,000 scholarship to a female student in Willis or Montgomery High School each year, but this time was financially able to give one at each school. (LGA) Ladies Golf Association

The Bentwater Ladies Golf Association is committed to play-ing golf, even in the Texas heat. On Tuesday mornings a large group of golfing ladies gather for its weekly playdays. Each week they are treated to another fun game of golf-Cha-Cha-Cha, Hack and Wack, Angry Bird, Three Holes, and Red White and Blue, to name a few. In addition to this playday and a Saturday playday for our working members, they also compete in BLGA tournaments such as the American Cancer Society Tournament, Ladies Invitational in May, the Club Champion-ships in September and the always fun Bentwater Cup which pits the Weiskopf course members against the Miller course members. Other events include interclub outings to area cours-es for both the eighteen hole and the nine hole groups as well as state tournaments that the really good ladies (you know, those players with single digit handicaps) compete in each year.

The ladies just completed the BLGA Ladies Invitational tournament on June 1-2, and are looking forward to the club championships in September. The BLGA Nine Hole tourna-ment will be held September 18-19. The ladies will be trying

to unseat the current champions, Sandy Wagner and Charlotte Heathcott. The 18-hole championships will follow on Septem-ber 20-22, with the ladies lining up to unseat 2011 Club Cham-pion, Diana Hennigan, Senior Club Champions Diana Henni-gan and Karen Koerner and Super Senior Champions Rae Jean Young and Barbara Young.

Looking ahead, in October all will be vying for bragging rights as the ladies who live on the Miller side of Bentwater will battle the ladies who live on the Weiskopf side. This event will be held on Saturday, October 6, preceded by an evening rally on Octo-ber 5 at one of the member’s homes where each team’s coaches will try to rev their players up into a fighting frenzy. (Not really, but it sounds good!) Also in October, the nine-hole group hosts its Bewitched Invitational Tournament to be held on Tuesday, October 16.

All are hoping for cooler weather or just a cloudy day now and then, but the BLGA members never let a little heat keep them off the golf course. See you on the links!

BLO – Bentwater Ladies OrganizationBentwater and summertime means fun in the sun. While the Bentwater Ladies Organization is on break until September, the ladies that man the ship are still busy planning events for the fall and the rest of the year. And that doesn’t mean all BLO activities have stopped. Gourmet, Casual and Dining Out din-ers are still going to restaurants or to members’ houses for good fellowship. The Antique group is still looking for that perfect piece to complete a collection, and committee chairs are com-pleting plans for the rest of the year.

MEETING DATE CHANGE Don’t forget, beginning in September, the BLO meetings will move to the second Thursday of the month. This is a perma-nent change. This means that the September meeting will be on THURSDAY, September 13, and will feature a quartet

of classical guitarists. This is an important meeting for sign-ing up for some of the upcoming BLO special events. It will be your last chance to sign up for the girls only Annual BLO Gambling and Golf Bus Trip to Coushatta casino in Kinder, Louisiana that leaves on Wednesday, October 24, and returns on Thursday, October 25.

Reservations will be taken for the bus trip to the annual Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market. This is always a fun trip. The bus will leave Bentwater bright and early in the morning on November 9, and head to Reliant Center where you will be dropped off at the door right before the market opens. Then shop till you drop, and to drop off packages the bus will be conveniently parked at the door. The return to Bentwater is around 4pm.

WINE AND CHEESE PARTY FOR NEWCOMERS If you are a newcomer to Bentwater in the past year, you are invited to the Bentwater Ladies Organization Newcomers Wine and Cheese party, which will be held on Thursday, Sep-tember 6, at the home of Michelle Chiste from 4-6 pm. Originally from Loui-siana, the oil and gas business has taken Gary and Brenda all over the world, including the links of Scotland. Choosing Bentwater as their final retirement destination is a story that spans

almost a decade. The couple first purchased an island homesite on Bentwater’s Benthaven Island in 2002. At the time, they were still living overseas. They returned to Houston some years later, living near downtown. However, Bentwater was always their desire and in 2006 the Luquettes purchased an adjoining island homesite.

In 2009 they began the design phase for their new home on Benthaven Island. Construction began in 2009 and in Decem-ber of 2010 the home was complete. Although they still live in Houston, both Gary and Brenda are looking forward to the day Bentwater is their full-time home. Meanwhile, the Luquettes

and their family and friends enjoy Bentwater’s first-class ame-nities. In fact, Gary’s brother Ronnie Luquette and his wife, Kate, recently purchased a large country estate homesite near the Weiskopf #5 golf hole in one of Bentwater’s newest sections. This referral afforded Gary and Brenda the benefit of a $2,000 Country Club credit through Bentwater Sales Center’s Property Owner Referral Program.

We asked each of them what some of their favorite things are about Bentwater. Brenda said, “the lake, boating, jet skiing, sun-sets and the very friendly and social residents at Bentwater.”

“Golf !” Gary exclaimed. “I plan to play golf four days a week and go fishing the other three days.” Gary also added, “The Grand Pines course is as close as you can get to the Scottish links.” A well-founded assessment, based upon his four years spent living and golfing in Scotland.

Brenda’s final comment seemed to go to the heart of the Bent-water lifestyle when she said that in addition to family now being fellow property owners, “people we have known for years, from the business, also live in Bentwater. As Bentwater neigh-bors, we have the opportunity to grow old together.”

Ideas for you to Prepare a STAY or GO PLAN

PREPARE A FAMILY PLAN Decide now if you will evacuate early or remain in your home. Prepare accordingly. Communicate your plan in advance with your extended family and coordinate a meeting site.

1. IF YOU GO (EVACUATE):Leave as soon as possible. Do not wait until traffic is so heavy that you run the risk of being stranded on the roads.

Advance Preparations for evacuation:

a. Medications and Eyeglasses - Secure adequate supply of prescriptions, medications, eyeglasses and other essentials. Take First Aid kit, including mosquito repellant, with you.

b. Home- Appliances - Empty your refrigerator and freezer, leave

doors open.

- Utilities - Turn off utilities.

- Furnishings - Move all outside furniture and other out-side items into garage or tie them down. Leave propane tanks outside and securely tie them down.

- Boats - Tie your boat securely to your dock using lifting rings, not cleats, to dock pilings, not cleats on dock.

- Vehicles – Park any remaining vehicles in garage and lock garage door with slide lock or chain.

- Drainage – Remove obstructions to drainage between houses. It should be free and clear of any items in order to for storm water to drain properly. Flooding often can be traced back to this issue.

- Notify a neighbor who is remaining that you are evacuat-ing and provide emergency contact numbers.

c. Vehicle – Leave with a full tank of gas in your vehicle. Gas may not be readily available. Take an empty gas can. Take a vehicle emergency kit with you, including spare tire, battery charger, flash lights, pillows and blankets, reflective vests, small tool kit, etc.

d. Food and Water – Take ample supply of non-perishable food and water in your vehicle. A cooler would be convenient. Food, water and personal articles may not be readily avail-able. Include non-scented bleach and empty gallon contain-ers to mix 8 drops of bleach to one gallon of water to purify. Include trash bags.

e. Children – Take sufficient personal articles and diapers, as well as games and toys that do not require electricity for entertainment.

f. Cellular Phone – Take cell phone with vehicle connection and/or additional batteries.

g. Cash – Take a sufficient amount of cash in small denomina-tions with you, as credit cards may not be usable due to lack of electricity.

h. Destination – Plan your destination. If possible, plan to evacuate as far from the coast as possible. Areas such as Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Lufkin and other heavily populated areas will be overcrowded with evacuees.

PETS Take your pets with you if you evacuate. Prepare a list of family, friends, boarding facilities, veterinarians and “pet friendly” hotels that could shelter your pets. Take all medications, vaccination records, one week supply of food, bottled water, litter, and plastic bags to dispose of litter or pet waste, collar, leash and ID tags. 2. IF YOU STAY: Bentwater Property Owners Association (POA) 170 Hillsborough Drive West will be the COMMAND CENTER Emergency Operations Center during storms.

Information and communications from neighbors, MUD 18, governmental organizations, and other resources will be avail-able at this site.

All CERTs are invited to report to the Command Center dur-ing emergency conditions.

CERTs - There are over 30 trained CERTs, Community Emer-gency Response Team, members in Bentwater. A program developed in part by Homeland Security, it is now administered by Citizen Corps. CERT and Citizen Corps were transferred to the Office of Domestic Preparedness (now the Office of Grants and Training) in August 2004.

This program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and res-cue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. They are easily recognizable in their green uniforms and possess CERT identification. If you are interested in becoming a CERT, please contact Dawn Cleboski at [email protected].

Electricity or telephone service may not be available for a week or longer. Trees and power lines may be down creating roads impassable for unknown time periods.

If you need electricity to stay alive or if you have medical issues, are over 65, are pregnant or have children, you should consider evacuating early.

- Gutters, Windows and Doors- Make sure gutters are free of debris to allow unobstructed water flow. Strengthen your door latch system; consider adding surface mounted side bolts. Essential supplies to consider include tarps, pole saw, roof cement, tie-down rope, plywood, power saw, cordless drill, work gloves and a ladder. A wet/dry vacuum may come in handy.

- Boats - Tie your boat securely to your dock using lifting rings, not cleats, to dock pilings, not cleats on dock.

- Vehicles – Keep gas tanks full and park vehicles in garage. Have vehicle emergency kit with you, including spare tire, flash lights, blankets, reflective vests, etc.

c. Food and Water – Have ample supply of non-perishable food. During a power outage, use your perishable food before it spoils. A cooler full of ice would be convenient for the first few days when without power. Food and personal articles

d. Flash Lights, Lanterns and Batteries – Gather and check all flashlights and battery-powered lanterns. Secure an ample supply of all sizes and types of batteries.

e. Cellular Phone – Have cell phone with vehicle connection and additional batteries.

f. Radio and TV – Have battery operated radio and TV avail-able. Tune to 99.7 FM or other emergency frequencies for announcements. STAY INFORMED.

g. Generator – You may wish to consider the purchase of a por-table generator with extension cords or stand-by generator (approval of a stand-by generator requires Architectural Con-trol Approval). Do not operate a generator inside your home.

h. Cash – Have sufficient amount of cash on hand as credit cards may not be usable due to lack of electricity.

i. Valuables and Important Records – Place all of your valu-ables and important records in a waterproof container and store in the safest place.

j. Safe Room – You may wish to designate a specific room in your home as a safe room.

You must be aware of the potential risk of crime in your home in order to prevent it.

First, remember the key factor in most crimes is OPPORTUNITY.

IF THEY CAN’T GET TO IT, THEY CAN’T TAKE IT.

Then, follow a plan of home security to deter the potential bur-glar. Here are some tips to follow:

DefinitionThe thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. Osteoporosis is the most common type of bone disease. There are currently an estimated 10 million Americans suffering from osteoporosis, as well as another 18 million who have low bone mass, or osteopenia. Osteoporosis occurs when the body fails to form enough new bone, or when too much old bone is reabsorbed by the body, or both. Calcium and phosphate are two minerals that are essential for normal bone formation. Throughout youth, the body uses these minerals to produce bones. If calcium intake is not sufficient, or if the body does not absorb enough calcium from the diet, bone production and bone tissues may suffer. As people age, calcium and phospate may be reabsorbed back into the body from the bones, which makes the bone tissue weaker. Both situations can result in brittle, fragile bones that are subject to fractures, even in the absence of trau-ma. Researchers estimate that about 20% of American women over the age of 50 have osteoporosis. In addition, another 30% of them have osteopenia, which is abnormally low bone density that may eventually deteriorate into osteoporosis, if not treated. About half of all women over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture of the hip, wrist, or vertebra.

Bentwater Cares

Bentwater United Way sponsored a Days of Caring campaign at Project Head Start in Willis. The Head Start Program serves children ages three to five who come from backgrounds below the poverty level or who are determined to be “at risk.”

Early on, Bentwater volunteers saw an opportunity to share their joy of reading with the students at Project Head Start and created the children and reading (CAR) program. Nearly 50 volunteers have been involved with the CAR pro-

gram and have read hundreds of books to Head Start students. CAR has been a very successful and rewarding program for both the volunteers and the students.

This spring CAR readers attended three graduation ceremonies for 57 Head Start students. After each student was recog-nized and given a diploma, the readers congratulated the student and presented a book to the student purchased with mon-ey donated by Bentwater residents. “The students were very excited to see their

readers and take a picture with us. It was great seeing parents open the gift and start immediately reading to their child,” said Linda Pierce, coordinator for CAR.

Parents and administrators expressed their gratitude to CAR readers for their dedication to Project Head Start. Linda Pierce added, “The program is undergo-ing revision but we are certain there will be a place for CAR readers in the future. Please stay tuned for information about future volunteer opportunities.”

The Bentwater United Way Leadership Committee announced its 2012 campaign goal for Montgomery County United Way (MCUW). The goal for 2012 is $147,000. The thermometer, with its new messages, will soon be erected outside the sports club. Watch your pledges count as the “temperature” rises.

Remember, Bentwater donations stay in Montgomery County and help Montgomery County residents. Please participate… it’s a great way to show that you CARE.

A Trip to NavasotaAntique Friends

Our Antique Friends’ latest jaunt was to Navasota. Like so many others, some of us had driven through the town many times, always “oohing and aahing” over the beautiful old man-sions and homes but never stopping. This time Phillis Podlipny organized a trip and included a stop at Pink Champagne, a beautiful white mansion, and Westwick Antiques, a huge Victo-rian home. Both of these places were chock full of antiques, fur-niture and various items used around the turn of the century. It is so interesting to see the beautiful staircases, narrow doorways, and features exclusive to these old houses.

After covering the downtown area, which included the Nava-sota Emporium and The French Market, the group circled back and all met at Mallett Brothers BBQ to have lunch and com-pare notes.

A special thanks to Phillis for making this last trip of the sum-mer very enjoyable! Antique Friends’ meetings and trips will resume in September. Don’t forget to wear your nametag, as there are a lot of new members, guests and friends. More are always welcome!
