Brown Shrimp - New Approach To Determine Weight Stats Per Edible Portions

Another shrimp research paper by Bentwater Resident, Dr. Charles Caillouet, was recently published in Marine Fisheries Review (http://spo.nmfs.noaa.gov/mfr732/mfr7322.pdf ). Below is a summary of its findings:

"Our research paper (http://spo.nmfs.noaa.gov/mfr732/mfr7322.pdf ) demonstrated a new approach to determining the statistical distribution of weight per shrimp tail (edible portion) in annual landings of brown shrimp in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Shrimp are size-graded and marketed according to size-class intervals expressed in count, the number of tails per pound. These intervals are called count categories. Management of shrimp stocks in the Gulf of Mexico is scientifically based on results of demographic modeling of shrimp populations, which requires information on the size and age distributions of shrimp in the landings. We devel-oped a simulation method to convert pounds landed within count categories into annual distributions of tail weight, from which age distributions can be estimated and used in future demographic modeling."

BLO – FUN, FUN, FUN

YESTERDAY and TOMORROW

NeighborhoodNews

The Bentwater Ladies Organization ended the year with plenty of excitement and fun. We began the holiday season in November with two fun filled days of shopping at the BLO sponsored Bric-A-Brac at the Yacht Club followed by a bus trip into Houston for the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market. It would not be an exaggeration to say that some serious retail therapy was done by the ladies that week! The next week we were entertained at our monthly luncheon by students from the Sam Houston State University Opera Workshop. Everyone was impressed by the caliber of the students and their fantastic voices. It left us wanting more and a number of the ladies are planning on heading north one weekend to see one of the opera workshop’s performances at Sam Houston’s new state-of-the-art performing arts center.

We all took a break for Thanksgiving to enjoy our families and friends, but were once again hard at work the next week put-ting the final touches on two of our premier events, the Holiday Dinner Dance and the Holiday Home Tour. The Dinner Dance was December 2-3 at the country club. About 250 BLO members and spouses enjoyed the dinner dance with friends enjoying a great meal from the chefs at the club and a great band that kept us dancing all night.

The next week we continued our celebration of the holidays at the annual Holiday Home Tour. Hundreds of Bentwater

residents and friends were treated to seven beautifully decorated homes at this charity event. Bentwater Ladies Organization is grateful to the seven homeowners who opened their homes for two nights so we could “ooh and aah” at their beautifully deco-rated homes. The homeowners were Roger and Julie Rodriguez, Len and Marlene Keeling, Greg and Lynn Hullinger, Gary and Sandy Eiland, Wanda and Michael Morgan, Sam and Laurie Burtch and Bill and Dee Soderman and the charities that ben-efitted from the home tour were the American Cancer Society, the Assistance League of Montgomery County, Fourway Bap-tist Church, Cafe` Hope, Montgomery County Youth Services, Montgomery County Women’s Center and the Montgomery High School Music Department. The BLO also wishes to thank all of its members and their friends that gave up a few hours to serve as greeters and traffic control that helped to make this year’s tour a success.

Speaking of success, our BLO chili team, the Hot Chicks won best decorated booth at the Chili for Charities Cook-Off in November and we gave checks to the Assistance League and the Montgomery County Animal Rescue and the Bric-A-Brac raised $2100 which will also be given to a charity or charities determined by the BLO board.

We ended the year with a very special luncheon in December with entertainment by the Amen Chorus, a talented group of

Bentwater residents directed by Keith Ann Gearn who treated us to some old fashioned Christmas carols. The last event of the year was on December 15 when the Bentwater Ladies Organi-zation board thanked all of the ladies that worked so very hard to make 2011 a special year with a Volunteer Appreciation Party at the home of Ann and John Cavanaugh. Everyone who had contributed in some way to make the year a success was invited to the party. This year there were 54 ladies in board and activity positions. Add to that the additional committee mem-bers and you have about 100 ladies in active BLO roles each year. It is the continued dedication of all of these members that makes a year full of Bentwater Ladies Organization events suc-cessful. Thanks to all of the ladies who have contributed their time to BLO activities this year. It is your efforts that make us successful each year.

The Bentwater Ladies said “thank you” on December 5 to all of the Bentwater employees with our Cookies for the Staff day. Many Bentwater residents and BLO members baked cookies-hundreds of dozens of cookies – that were collected and boxed. It is just a small way for the us to say thank you to the staff for

Bentwater Garden Club members gathered to hear a presentation by Pam Hoke of Gilmore’s Florist of Conroe. Gilmore’s has been in business since 1937. Floral design-er Pam Hoke graciously agreed to come to Bentwater to demonstrate techniques and give helpful hints concerning creating lovely arrangements for the home. She used natural foliage and flowers found in many yards and gardens in the Conroe and Mont-gomery area, in addition to flowers from Gilmore’s shop. After creating numerous beautiful arrangements, garden club members received these floral creations as door prizes. Members hope to use the knowledge they gained to create their own natural decorations for their homes.

MOB – Men Of Bentwater

NeighborhoodNews NeighborhoodNews

The Men of Bentwater (MOB) recent meetings featured John N. Hennigan, Montgomery County Health District Chief Executive Officer, who presented an introduction to MCHD and Amy Antley, MCHD Cardiac Coordinator, who discussed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillators (AEDs). Leonard Glass presented Piloting on the Houston Ship Channel. The MOB members present were very interested in the material as well as security at the facilities to prevent terrorists attacks.

Nominations for the 2012 Board were accepted as well as solicited from the floor. At the January 18th luncheon, the new board members for 2012 will be announced.

A recap of the fall included a great experience at our Oktoberfest with sauerkraut, brats and beer supplied by the MOB. All members and spouses were invited. Everyone that attended enjoyed the outing in the Park in the Meadows, the weather cooperated well within the first hour and was tolerable during the second. Thanks to Bob Bowe, Leonard Glass, Ed

Busen, David Alff, Tom Goodwin, Mark Love and Spider Mohle (original member of the MOB) for providing us with cooking expertise that made our day enjoyable. Our gratitude is also extended to Jim Linse for providing transportation and muscle to the effort as well as MOB Board Members; Jack Visage, Al Franklin, Robert Miner, Dan Leasure, Pat Horsley and Jim Hamilton for providing supplies and their presence to make this event a success.

The MOB participated in the Chili for Charity Cook Off with Frank Husband, Robert Miner, John Wigenbach and Ron Arnoldi taking the lead in preparing some of the best chili on earth. The chili continues to disappear prior to the voting. It was an enjoyable time for all the MOB Members and families to be a part of this worthwhile endeavor.

A very popular event last year, the Christmas Dinner Theatre, coordinated by Jim Hamilton, was a great success. Everyone left with a good feeling of fun and fellowship with the MOBSTERS. Come join us.

With a chill in the air and chili in the pot, the Bentwater Mont-gomery County United Way Leadership Committee competed in the Chili for Charity Cook Off in November.

Bentwater resident, “Chef ” Patrick O’Neil, along with wife Sharon and several Leadership Committee members, dished out O’Neil’s secret recipe chili for all to taste.

“I enjoy cooking chili at cook offs because of the camaraderie. The people are a lot of fun,” O’Neil said. “I generally cook a pretty hot chili, but I wanted it to have a really good chili flavor, so I adjusted the spices for the Bentwater cook off.”

Again this year, along with chili, the committee members shared their homemade cookies and passed out bottled water to the hungry crowd.

Besides chili, cookies and brownies at the cook off booth, the O’Neil’s brought their 4½-year-old bird Buddy, who goes with them to every chili cook off. Buddy is a Caique parrot, which is a species from Western South America, but he is a born Texan.

This was the second year the Bentwater MCUW Leadership Committee sponsored a chili cook off booth. In 2010 O’Neil’s chili won Judge’s Choice. O’Neil donated the winnings, over three thousand dollars, to MCUW.

The Golf Goddesses of Bentwater

Golf Goddesses of BEnTwaTER

The Golf Goddesses of Bentwater gathered in mid October at The Falls Golf Resort in New Ulm for their 11th annual "Golf God-dess Get-Away". The Golf Goddesses concept was originated by five ladies who met in the BLGA's nine hole group in 2000:

Marilyn Colbert Mary Peterson Linda Pierce Carole Piperi Janice Slaughter

Over the next ten years, the group has significantly grown. The name "Golf Goddesses" evolved because it fit the spirit of the group: women who loved golfing together, focused on improving their skills, and shared a passion for keeping fun in game. To achieve the latter, Golf Goddesses grant themselves the right and responsibility to invoke any goddess rule of their own making which will reduce stress AND speed up play, but did not disadvantage another goddess. Since Goddesses play for fun, rather than money, protecting the field has no meaning in a goddess golf game. This year's get-away included 25 lady golfers, all from Bentwa-ter, who enjoyed golf, laughter, great food and - new this year - line dancing!

The travel from Bentwater holds no borders. Recently, Mike and Joan Castleberry fulfilled one of the trips on their

“bucket list,” and organized an African safari to Tanzania with six other Bentwater couples. The trip began with air travel to Amsterdam followed by a second flight to Kilimanjaro Airport in eastern Africa.

First on the list of places to visit was the Tarangire National Park, the third largest park in Tanzania. This park consisted of two rivers, hills, and the famous “upside down tree”, the baobad tree, and a concentrated population of many African animals including elephants, giraffes, zebras, impalas, wildebeests, wart-hogs, ostriches, and lions. The group of fourteen was divided

into three land rover type vehicles with open tops for photo-graphing and viewing the wild animals from narrow, dusty trails.

The primary destination was the vast, famous Serengeti National Park. The travelers were housed in canvas tents and provided with native, healthy food prepared on-site over wood fires. Here, the guides treated the group to early morning and late afternoon sight-ings of cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyenas, hippos, jackals, various birds and thousands of gazelles. Particular highlights of the trip were the discovery of a lion that had killed a gazelle and was car-rying it to a shady tree for breakfast as well as a cheetah enjoying lunch under a tree while being challenged by jackals trying to steal the kill. Later, the group observed many elephants seeking rain water on large granite rock outcroppings which was quite unusual. Truly, a lesson learned was that the lion was really “King” and the elephants were the smartest animals of all.

The final wildlife destination was the Ngorongoro Crater, an ancient collapsed interior of a volcano some twelve miles wide.

A balanced population of the African wildlife was observed here including the endangered black rhino, thousands of wildebeests and persistent hyenas.

An important segment of the trip was the cultural exchange which the guides called learning and discovery or “L and D”. A visit was made to a tribal Maasai village where native Maasai warriors and their wives explained their way of life which typi-cally revolves around the grazing of goats, sheep and cattle. A primary school was visited where students were eager to try their limited English and to see pictures of Texas and their own images on digital cameras. “Hakuna Matata”, which as in Lion King means, “Don’t worry, no problem”, was prominently dis-played on the blackboard.

The group consisted of Bentwater Residents Mike and Joan Castleberry, Ron and Brenda Clements, Bob and Mary Ann Jordan, Bob and Sally Bierman, Bob and Marie Hentges, Mike and Nicki Moranville, and Gene and Marilyn Colbert.

Grammy's Cookie Convoy is on the move again. We are gear-ing up for our next shipment of 5,000 "chocolate chip cookie hugs," along with as many cards, and letters to the troops serv-ing overseas. This project began in 2005 from a chance meeting on the putting green with one of our esteemed servicemen, who was also an employee of Bentwater at the time. Because of the special support from our Bentwater community, along with help from many others, we have shipped over one hundred thousand cookies, cards, letters, and several thousand hand sewn pocket hearts to our troops overseas.

We are planning our packing party for the next shipment on Sunday, February 5th at the Bentwater Yacht Club. We would love for you to join us that day to share in some fun, and fel-lowship. We could use your hands and hearts to help us send a little piece of home to those who serve our country courageously and unselfishly.

Please be assured that any organization or individual who would like to help us with writing cards and letters to the troops will be most appreciated. I promise the words written by each hand will be cherished by every set of eyes that will be reading them. Each card or letter makes every cookie taste a whole lot sweeter. Please let me know if you, or if you possibly know of someone else who might like to help us with this important part of the project.

Please add your name to our list of volunteers by contacting: Marlene Summers at [email protected] or 936-449-4053

Dawn Cleboski, Bentwater POA General Manager

General Manager’s Message

As we close 2011 and embark on the coming year, it is time to reflect on the changes we want or need to make, to prepare a plan for those changes and resolve to follow through with the plan. This is the time for “out with the old and in with the new”. We should look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead, per-haps try to break out of comfort zones, and work diligently to realize our full potential in every aspect of our daily lives.

We have an opportunity to maximize the impact we make in the lives of those we come in contact with as we attempt to bet-ter ourselves and the world around us. The adage of treating others as you would like to be treated is a winning solution.

First, we may have to make changes in how we treat ourselves. Investing the time to create a healthy lifestyle now can produce years of dividends in your future. You may want to sign up for fitness classes at the Sports Club, committing to exercise on a regular basis, and/or enjoying the facilities of our community whether it be on the golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool, biking or taking a relaxing walk around your neighborhood or the Park in the Meadows. Make conscious decisions for health-ier eating and sleeping habits. Those good habits will produce the energy needed to reach out to those in our community, the surrounding area and beyond.

You may want to participate in the whirlwind of activities at the club and/or the plethora of social, political and charitable organizations throughout Bentwater. There is no substitute for getting to know those in your community, identifying with them and assisting when needs arise. We are not an island unto ourselves and are designed to need each other. You can extend yourself to others throughout the community and because of those efforts, your life will be more fulfilled.

You may wish to consider making contributions of time and talents to better the lives of those who may not be as fortu-nate. Bentwater is filled with people who give of themselves to organizations that benefit our extended community. Your life becomes much more enriched by touching others.

When you resolve to enhance your life, keep in mind that typically Americans struggle with following through with the resolutions that they make. Twenty percent break them after the first week and eighty percent are broken before the end of the year. There are some key things that can assist in achieving the goals you have deemed important to you for this new year.

• Makeaplan.Aplancannotsucceedifthereisnotone to follow.

• Outlineyourplanwithwaysyoucanmeasureyour progress.

• Focusonthegoalandnotthecircumstances.

• Makeaproandconlist, keepingitavailabletoencourage you when you become tired or disheartened.

• Trackyourprogressandrewardyourself.

• Don’tgiveupifyoufalter,getupandkeepgoing.

This short bibliography is only a small number of articles com-piled by Mayor Webb Melder, City of Conroe, Texas while searching brackish water treating technology. Clearly, there has been brackish water knowledge in the literature since before 1971. Available literature, processing brackish water technol-ogy and interest in brackish water as a potable water source has grown rapidly since 1971. The cost of processing brackish water to potable water has declined by 50% or more in the last decade. State Water Plans since 2001 have stressed the need for brackish water use as an alternate to overstressed aquifers and surface water building cost. Texas Water Development Board has funded brackish water studies and assisted financially in the construction of brackish water plants. Brackish water is an alter-native to building new surface water and extends use of existing surface water and potable aquifer water resources.

1998, February TRANS–TEXAS WATER PROGRAM Southeast Area Technical Memorandum - Desalination Report Brown & Root, FEB 20, 1998,Sponsors: Sabine River Author-ity of Texas, Lower Neches Valley Authority, San Jacinto River Authority, City of Houston, Brazos River Authority, and Texas Water Development Board.

This document is a product of the Trans-Texas Water Program: Southeast Area. The program’s mission is to propose the best economi-cally and environmentally beneficial methods to meet water needs in Texas for the long term. The Phase I study concluded that desalination is feasible only if the required future water demand cannot be met by other, more conventional water supply meth-ods. High capital costs, high-energy requirements, high costs of operation and maintenance and brine disposal costs result in desalting production costs several times higher than other con-ventional water supply sources.

The Phase I Report, however, did not specifically evaluate the concept of desalination of brackish groundwater. Studies per-formed by others for the Texas Water Development Board

suggest that this specific desalination source water method may have merit and deserves review.

A desalting plant sized to meet the San Jacinto-Brazos basin demand short fall in 2040 is proposed for study. The desalting plant will be sized to deliver 44,600 afy (40 mgd) to southeast-ern Harris and northern Galveston counties. Construction of this facility would begin in approximately year 2038 to come online to meet demand shortfalls in year 2040. Assumed data: Input TDS 2,300, 31wells @ 1,500 feet spacing, design treated water 40 million gallons per day with 85 % design recovery of charge water. 44,600 Ac-Ft/Yr. Projected $1.84/1,000 operating cost with projected construction cost of $151 Million exclusive of debt service and final resolution of brine disposal.

Bentwater is blessed to have many wonderful people living in our community and none more delightful then the 91-year old tennis player, Vicki Askew. She moved here in 2011 from Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, and wasted no time getting involved in all of the activities that Bentwater has to offer.

Vicki can be seen playing bridge, working out in the fitness center, or attending North Shore Church… but most impres-sive is her love for the game of tennis. You may see her during a weekly private tennis lesson with our Director of Tennis, Mike Doty, or perhaps during her early morning tennis match with friends Susan James, Francis Halter and Ruth Moser. If that is not enough tennis for the 91 year old, she participates on the

C-Pink North Country Women’s League Team Workout Drill, plus she can be seen at the Saturday morning Club Drill. Vicki started playing tennis at the age of 50 and quickly fell in love with a game that can be played for a lifetime.

Vicki’s love for tennis has been widely recognized by the instal-lation of a beautiful six-court tennis center with three indoor/ three outdoors courts that have been dedicated in her name and donated to the city of Ebensburg.

Vicki has two sons, Rod McMahon, who lives on the other side of Lake Conroe, and Vince McMahon, who is the owner of the WWF World Wrestling Federation, and 12 great grandchildren.
