BLO – Bentwater Ladies OrganizationMonthly Luncheons Taking Summer Hiatus: Luncheons move to second THURSDAY starting in September.

All other groups continue to meet during the summer.

The Bentwater Ladies Organization is taking the summer off from luncheon meetings. There are no monthly meetings dur-ing the months of June, July and August. However all of the other activity groups continue to meet during the summer.

ANNUAL BUSINESSWOMEN OF BENTWATER LUNCHEON Our final luncheon in May was the Annual Businesswomen of Bentwater Luncheon where ladies in Bentwater who have their own business host one of the luncheon tables. The tables were all gaily decorated with items such as cosmetics, home accesso-ries, dog gear and jewelry that represented the businesswoman’s company. There were at least twenty lucky door prize winners this day as each of the tables donated a prize. In addition to the specially decorated tables, the ladies were treated to a style show from White House, Black Market boutique in the Woodlands.

There is a big change coming this fall. Our luncheon day will be changing from the second Monday to the second Thursday,

still the second week of the month. Mark your calendar now! The next luncheon meeting will be THURSDAY, SEPTEM-BER 13! The Luncheon dates for the rest of the year are: Sep-tember 13, October 11, November 8 and December 13.

NEWCOMER WINE and CHEESE PARTY The Newcomer Wine and Cheese Party will be Thursday, Sept. 6th from 4 to 6pm. This party is for all new ladies who have moved into Bentwater in the past year. Please contact Lynne Tolles at 936-647-2065 or email [email protected] for more information.

HOLIDAY HOME TOUR The Bentwater Ladies Organization is still looking for some homes for the Annual Holiday Home Tour charity event to be held December 4-6. Each year, seven Bentwater homeown-ers open their lovely homes to Bentwater residents and friends. Almost 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales from this event

go to the charity that each homeowner selects. Last year each homeowner’s charity received a check for almost $1500. If you would like to consider placing your home on the tour (you do not have to be a Bentwater Ladies Organization member to do so), please contact Pat Wagner, [email protected], Laurie Burtch, [email protected] or Kimi Poole, [email protected] . If you think you might be interested and want a homeowner’s perspective of the event, please talk to Laurie Burtch as her home was on the tour last year.

DINING OUT - CASUAL DINING - GOURMET GROUPS All of our activity groups are busy through the summer. The Dining Out and Casual Dining In groups meet on alternate

months, so you will have dinner plans once a month for sure! The ten gourmet groups are each feasting on Smoked Salmon Tartar, Sweet Corn Soup, Roasted Grouper with Braised Col-lard Greens and Red Rice with wine pairings during the sum-mer months.

ANTIQUE LADIES - ART TO LUNCH The Antique ladies hit the shops in Brenham, and the Art to Lunch group plans to visit the Houston Center for Contempo-rary Craft to see various plants and foliage created from X-rays, MRI film, and cast bronze as they twist and wind their way up the walls of the large HCCC gallery in Interstitial Spaces: Julie Barello & Beverly Penn. They will also visit the Holocaust Museum Houston to see the surrealistic work of Samuel Bak as he leads the viewer to, through and from the Holocaust. And as the Art to Lunch ladies know, we will have lunch at one of the best restaurants in Houston!

NSRW – North Shore Republican Women

National Republican Committeewoman and Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired), Borah Van Dormolen, was the speaker for a mid-spring meeting of North Shore Republican Women. She drew a huge crowd! The Bentwater Country Club was filled for the luncheon with more than 115 members and guests. Among the many elected officials attending were Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Gage, Texas State Senator Robert Nichols, Texas State Representative Brandon Creighton, Montgomery County Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Meador, Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable Don Chum-ley, and several others. Also attending were candidates for various offices on the May Republican primary ballot, and Montgomery County Republican Chairman Dr. Walter Wilkerson. Children and adults who enjoy bike riding will receive valuable information and safety tips while having fun during a Bicycle Rodeo beginning at 10 a.m., June 9, in the Bentwater Fitness Center parking lot. The event is a partnership of Bentwater Civic Association and Bentwater Property Owners Association.

What better way is there to spend a Saturday morning than bike riding, eating pizza and maybe winning prizes for display-ing skills?

Stations will be set up around the parking lot, with safety information and demonstrations, bicycle inspections, helmet inspections, and other instructional materials available. There will be skills challenges for children that will be fun as well as teaching events.

Helmets, a key to safety, will be required for participation in the Bicycle Rodeo. Helmets will be available for those who don’t have them or have outgrown theirs, and new helmets will also be available for purchase.

Pizza and drinks will be provided for those attending the event. Each child will receive a bicycle pin and activity booklet.

Long term Bentwater resident Boyd Como celebrated his 85th birthday with family and friends at Bentwater Country Club. Among the memories shared that day was the fact that Boyd was one of the first players to hit a hole-in-one on the Weiskopf course. At the time, the Miller course had not yet been built. He was a force to be reckoned with on the golf course.

We extend our condolences to Dan and Deb Wilson on the recent passing of Deb’s mother in Florida. The funeral was held in Arizona.

Richard Julius Parkans, age 73, passed away on March 30, 2012 in Conroe, Texas. Richard was born August 3, 1939 in Bronx, New York to Julius and Carmen Parkans. After graduating from NYU, he entered the US Air Force as a commissioned officer, stationed in Columbus, Mississippi, and Bentwaters, England attaining the Rank of Captain. Richard worked for Shell Oil for 31 years. Richard was a private pilot and member of the Ancient and Secret Order of the Quiet Birdmen, as well as the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association and Experimental Aircraft Association. Richard is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jaqueline Steward. He leaves behind to cherish his many memories, his wife, Kathryn Marie Parkans; his children, Robert Charles Parkans and his wife, Sandra and Susan Heidi Johnson and her husband, Kyle; Kathy's children, Angela Marie Franklin and Amy Elizabeth McQueen; his sister, Harriet Simonsen; his grandchildren, Jessica Robinson, Angela Sullivan, Ian Price, Stephanie McGehee, Dakoda Quen-tin Johnson and R. Brycen Parkans; Kathy's grandchildren, Jordan Ashley Truman, Avery Elizabeth Franklin and Luke Franklin. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Waverly, Texas, where Parkans was an active member.

Lauren Jane Ovelgonne Tenney, age 26, left this world on April 18th following the birth of her beautiful son. She is survived by her loving husband Drew and baby boy Andy; parents Carol and Steve Ovelgonne, brother Jimmy, mother-in-law Cindy, father-in-law Howard, brother-in-law Gene and wife Natalie, sister-in-law Katie and husband Jeremy, nephew Lucas, Grandma Martha, Drew's grandparents, Gene, Vonnie and Howard, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and her sweet dog Cocoa. The family is devastated.

She attended Montgomery High School where she excelled in both academics and athletics, graduating sixth in her class. Lauren was a star on the Bears' tennis team. She received a scholarship to Oklahoma State where she graduated Suma Cum Laude in 2008.

Lauren was the front desk manager for Bentwater Country Club from 2008 to 2011, where she was highly respected and dearly loved by her co-workers. Most recently, she was the executive assistant at Anusara, Inc.

Her family stated that she was looking forward to motherhood and, like everything she did, she would have been one of the best. Perfection is impossible to describe but she came as close to it as anyone. She will be missed by all who knew her.

The funeral Mass was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Plantersville.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to a college fund for baby Andy Tenney. The fund has been estab-lished at First Victoria National Bank, 6302 FM 1488, Magnolia, Texas, 77354. Please make checks payable to Andy Tenney - Andy's benefit fund.

Please help us by ensuring there is an exterior ornamental light that has been reviewed and approved by the Bentwater Archi-tectural Control Committee installed at your residence and it is maintained in proper working condition.

The Bentwater Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions state:

“At the time a residence is built on any Lot, the Owner, at Owner’s sole cost and expense, shall cause an ornamental light fixture mounted on a pole, as approved by the (Architectural Control Committee) Committee, to be located on the Lot at a location approved by the Committee. The ornamental light pole shall be connected to the resi-dence’s electrical system and shall have a photo cell so the light is on during the hours of darkness.”

The ornamental light not only brightens our neighborhood but it helps emergency personnel find YOU!

EXTERIOR LIGHTSKeep your exterior light in good working order

Bentwater’s Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restric-tions, reads, in part:

“The only motorized vehicles allowed on the roads and street ease-ments in the Subdivision shall be golf carts with a current permit issued by the Bentwater Country Club” and further,

“Vehicles, regardless of type, may only be operated by individuals holding a current driver’s license valid in the State of Texas”.

Any violation of the rules may result in a sanction by the Asso-ciation of one or more of the following:

A. Warning of a violation

B. Fines charged to the owner for the violation:1. First violation $100.002. Second violation $500.003 Each occurrence thereafter $500.00

C. If the owner continues to violate the rules after the imposi-tion of the fines as stated above, the Association may then revoke the golf cart permit for up to 60 days or, in the case of continued violations after the initial suspension, per-manently prohibit the owner from using a golf cart on the streets within Bentwater®.

The registered owner is responsible for the golf cart, whether or not they are present during reported infractions.

Visits The Grower’s Outlet garden club

The Bentwater Garden Club recently met at The Growers Out-let in Willis to tour the nursery. Mariam Hemmeline explained the layout of the nursery and highlighted a few of the plants.

She mentioned: Calliope geraniums are more tolerant of drought than other types of geraniums.

In the garden nursery were dwarf hummingbird bushes that grow compact and upright.

Anonymous Donor gives $100,000 to establish

Employees tell what it means to them and express appreciation to the donor.

Bentwater property owners will want to participate in this worthwhile program. Fabulous fundraiser to be held in August.

Bentwater Property Owners Association (POA) is delighted to announce the establishment of the Bentwater Scholarship Fund on behalf of all Bentwater property owners. An anonymous donor designated Bentwater resident and POA trustee Terry Bowie as his/her representative for the express purpose of estab-lishing a scholarship fund for Bentwater employees and their families with a generous contribution of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00).

A large number of Bentwater employees, single and married, attend local higher learning institutions and struggle to afford tuition, books and other required materials. There are many Bentwater property owners who will want to assist them by contributing to this extremely worthwhile scholarship program.

Bentwater Property Owners Association elected Trustee and Advisory Board Members will act as the Criteria Committee of

this scholarship fund. Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in partnership with Lone Star Community College has been selected to manage the fund.

This permanent endowment will be used to benefit the current employees of Bentwater Yacht & Country Club, Bentwater Property Owners Association and Bentwater Sales Corporation and their spouses, legal dependents, children and grandchildren, who will be eligible to apply for scholarships to any higher learning institution although the proximity of Lone Star Col-lege and Sam Houston University make them attractive loca-tions. Applications for this fund can only be made through Sam Houston University’s on-line scholarship application program even if applying for another institution. The selection process will be administered by SHSU in the same manner they administer all other scholarship funds. The Bentwater Criteria Committee will have no authority in selection of any specific scholarship candidate. Their mission is only to provide criteria to the fund manager.

MOB – Men Of BentwaterMOB Hosts Speakers from Montgomery Schools on Jobs, the Economy and available Local Water Sources

ACTIVITIES In addition to luncheon and breakfast meetings in the first half of 2012 focusing on an array of subjects with local and regional interest, MOB members also enjoyed a variety of special events and an overnight road trip to Louisiana.

MOB GOLF ACTIVITIES The first of three MOB golf outings scheduled this year took place in mid-May at Lake Charles, Louisiana, where 68 MOB-sters vied for individual and specialty prizes at the new National Golf Club of Louisiana and Gray Plantation Golf Club, one of the Top 100 courses in the United States according to Golf Digest magazine.

Other upcoming golf events include MOB’s annual Hotter N’ Hell Open on Wednesday, July 18, at Bentwater Country Club followed by a day trip to picturesque High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia on Wednesday, September 18.

A VISIT FROM MONTGOMERY ISD SUPERINTENDENT BEAU REES MOB’s luncheon speaker in mid-spring was Dr. Beau Rees,

who became superintendent of the Montgomery Independent School District on January 1. Rees discussed his outlook for Montgomery schools and the synergetic relationship between the school system and our Bentwater community. Rees and his wife Billie, a high school English teacher, are the parents of three daughters who attend Montgomery schools. The family resides in Bentwater.

A former teacher, coach, assistant principal, elementary prin-cipal, high school principal, and director of curriculum in the Colorado, Sweetwater, and Graham school districts, Rees earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Texas A&M University as well as a Master of Education degree from Abilene Christian University and a Doctorate of Educa-tion degree from Texas Tech University.

A VISIT FROM 8TH DISTRICT CONGRESSMAN KEVIN BRADY 8th District Congressman Kevin Brady updated MOB members on some of the latest political maneuvering in Washington con-cerning the economy, jobs, health care, and government spending.

Brady later reported on the MOB meeting on his constituent web site. “It is always my pleasure to join the Men of Bentwater for lunch and a legislative briefing,” he noted. “I appreciate their strong interest in tax reform and fiscal responsibility in Washington.”

LAKE CONROE COMMUNITIES NETWORK MOB’s speaker, Mike Castleberry, a founder of the Lake Conroe Communities Network and now its water committee chairman, discussed Montgomery County’s water supply and demand.

Pointing to last year’s drought and the tenuous balance between water supply and demand in the area surrounding Lake Conroe, Castleberry urged Bentwater residents and others to petition officials of water management bodies to take aggressive steps now to ensure sufficient water availability at reasonable cost in the future.

Recently, the Antique Friends went to the home of Bentwater Resident Wanda Morgan, a longtime collector. Wanda shared her lovely home and told many stories of her antique adven-tures. Her first item she acquired was a beautiful Nippon vase, at $60.00. It was a bargain. Crystal, china, perfume bottles, furniture and "Toms" glass containers...her collection is across the board. Variety seems to be her motto along with "I love a good deal." A well- read collector, who believes being armed

with knowledge. Wanda and Mike were on the Home Tour in December, but several members of the Antique Friends had not seen their home. They have a house that is truly a home exud-ing warmth and personality.

After a short meeting with Lynn Guilbaut where she provided info on the outing to Brenham, the group had refreshments and enjoyed lovely fellowship.

The Bentwater Civic Association recently offered free docu-ment shredding to all Bentwater residents. The BCA board

members were surprised when they arrived early at the parking lot of the North Shore Church to see a line of cars forming on shredding day. It certainly showed the need for this service.

SHREDDING DAY This year the Bentwater Civic Association board is focusing on community events that are available for all Bentwater residents free of charge. The first of these events was the Shredding Day. More than 100 Bentwater residents and the Bentwater Country Club took advantage of this service. Almost 8,500 pounds of documents were shredded in the two hour period by On-Site Shred. Peter Miller, On-Site Shred company president, was on hand to help with the shredding. Residents lined up in their cars and BCA board member Charlsie Rogge gave directions to each car. The event drew a large crowd. The BCA team had to break the line up into a double line to keep the cars from block-ing the West entrance.

BCA President, Terry Gent, loaded documents to be shredded into the bin and Roland Voight filled a second bin. Residents only had to drive up, and their cars were unloaded by BCA members. Terry Gent, Roland Voigt, and Michael Kove waited to fill another bin with documents to be shredded. Due to the success of this free service, the BCA board plans to offer it at least annually.

for shredding. At one point, about a half hour after begin-ning, the line of cars reached out into the street and a double line of cars was formed to keep the entrance to Bentwater clear. However, the lines moved along quickly and no one had to wait more than about 15 minutes to get their documents shredded. Special thanks to Dawn Cleboski at the POA for loaning us the traffic cones for our event.

Several people asked what happens to the shredded documents. Before he left, Miller told us that the shredded paper will be bleached to remove the ink and then formed into cubes that will later be made into tissue paper.

HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY The Bentwater Civic Association also volunteered their services to the Marina Hazardous Waste Day in mid-spring. Bentwater Yacht & Country Club co-sponsored the event with the BCA who staffed the Yacht Club parking lot collection site and pro-vided home pick-up service for those residents who could not transport heavy objects to the yacht club.

TAX FORUM The BCA most recently sponsored another tax forum for the community. Important information concerning how to appeal your taxes and where to get the information you need to appeal was presented.

BICYCLE RODEO Check out the information on the Bicycle Rodeo in this edition of Bentwater Life. It is co-sponsored by the BCA and Bentwater Property Owners Association (POA) for ALL Bentwater residents, kids and adults alike. There will be experienced bikers available to enhance your understanding of the bicycle rules of the road. Look for more information about this event on the Bentwater website.

It is a Bentwater family tradition! Plans for the annual Fourth of July parade are underway and you don’t want to miss out. So call your neighbors, build a float and dress in your red, white and blue. The parade will take to the streets at 10 am on Wednesday, July 4th.

Every year the parade has great music, motorcycles, antique and customized automobiles, and huge floats from various Bentwa-ter organizations, including the Ladies of Bentwater, the Men of Bentwater and the Bentwater Civic association. More than 150 decorated golf carts are expected as well.

Participants and spectators will also be amazed by our very Freedom Flight flyovers.

If you want to participate in the parade, you’ll need to arrive at the PARK IN THE MEADOWS by 9:30 am to line up. The parade will make its way up Bentwood Drive to Bentwater Drive, where judges will be staged, deciding which entrants cre-ated the best float or decorated vehicle.

The parade will wrap up at the fitness center where everyone is invited to the awards party and to enjoy a variety of festivities, including a cool swim.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Displaying the Stars and Stripes

ONLY U.S., TEXAS, official replica of ANY BRANCH OF THE U. S. MILITARY flags may be flown: Recent revisions to POA policy states the U.S. flag doesn’t have to fly solo. Bentwater homeowners can now show their support for the state of Texas and our U.S. armed forces by flying our state flag and an official replica flag of any branch of the U.S. military.

University/college flags, company flags, nature flags, and other types may not be flown.

FLAG POLES: Let’s talk flagpoles. We know you may be excited about flying three flags, but don’t head out to buy three poles. POA regula-tions say you can only have one flagpole on your property, and it must be constructed of permanent, long-lasting materials.

No flagpoles may be mounted on trees.

Flagpoles may either be freestanding or mounted to your home; however, freestanding flagpoles must be located in the backyard and may not be taller than 20-feet when measured from the ground level. No flagpole can be placed within an easement on your lot or in a location that encroaches on a setback of your lot. If you want a freestanding flagpole, you will need to submit an application with the Architectural Control Committee (ACC)

showing the proposed location of the pole along with pictures showing the location and the manufacturer’s brochure.

As for mounted flagpoles, they can be attached to either the front or back of the home but can be no longer than five feet. Flagpoles mounted to your home do not require approval from the ACC.

DISPLAYING THE FLAG: So let’s say you have properly installed your permanent flagpole and are ready to display your flags. Keep this rule in mind: the American flag is always the first one raised and last one lowered. U. S. Flag code states the American flag should be at the highest point on the flagpole with the state flag beneath it and the mili-tary flag below the state flag.

The American flag and Texas flag should not be displayed out-doors earlier than sunrise or later than sunset unless the flag(s) are to be displayed 24 hours a day, in which case they must be properly illuminated during hours of darkness. In Bentwater, if you choose to leave your flag out during evening and nighttime hours, the flag must be lit from the base of the flagpole with a maximum of two bulbs and no more than 150 watts. As the Fourth of July quickly approaches, you are likely running a “to do” list through your mind: buy invitations for the annual family picnic, ask Aunt Susie to bring potato salad, pick up sparklers for the grandkids, and of course, take down the properly folded flag from the top of the closet.

But before you proudly display the stars and stripes, you may want to add one more item to your list: read this article so you know the proper way to show your patriotism.

In March and early April, a group of Bentwater travelers enjoyed a one-week visit to the Hawaiian Islands followed by a relaxing week of TransPacific cruising on the return home. The group flew non-stop to Honolulu, where they began the adventure with two days of touring before continuing on for visits to Kauai, Maui and the Big Island.

Along the way, they enjoyed visits to Pearl Harbor, coffee plantations, rainforests and waterfalls, active volcanoes, orchid farms and the beautiful drive to Hana during our 2-day visit to Maui. Among other highlights of the trip was the celebration of Eleanor and Ross Burke’s 57th Wedding Anniversary, exquisite gourmet dining aboard Celebrity Century and a special private group cocktail party in the cruise ship’s Penthouse Suite during the cruise home. The photos tell some of the story.

Each year the Montgomery County Women's Council of Organizations come together at the Women of Distinction Luncheon to celebrate all that has been done in the past year and to honor the extraordinary women who do extraor-dinary things. The women are selected based on their volunteerism and service to the community.

This year, Claudia Riedlinger from Bentwater has been nomi-nated by the Pregnancy Assistance Center North in Conroe as their Woman of Distinction. Claudia a Nurse Practitioner, con-ducts Ultra Sounds and STD testing for their clients.

What to do about discarding household & automotive chemi-cal waste, electronics, appliances, etc.? Montgomery County MUD 18 will pick up furniture and appliances on each Friday in Bentwater. Each household is limited to two such items per week and no items containing CFC refrigerants can be accepted.

The Montgomery County Precinct 3 Recycling Center, 1122 Pruitt Road, Spring, TX 77380 accepts motor oil, batteries and tires ($2 off the rim, $7 on the rim), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday and 8 a.m. to 5pm on Saturdays.

The Montgomery County Precinct 3 Recycling Center accepts household and automotive chemical waste, electronics, appli-ances, etc., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Saturday. The recycle center charges $10 per TV or monitor (any size); other electron-ics such as printers and modems are free. Chemical waste and paint are charged at $5 for up to five gallons and $10 for up to ten gallons, every Wednesday and every third Saturday in the month. www.precinct3.org\recycle, 281-367-7283.

BestBuy stores accept TVs and monitors up to 30” diagonal for a $10 recycle fee. For each item (TV or monitor) recycled, the store issues a $10 gift certificate. Other electronic recycle is free.

The Montgomery County Precinct #3 Recycling Facility will be staffing a Household Chemical Waste Disposal Day on June 2nd and 3rd at the MC Precinct #1 Barns, located at 510 HWY 75 North in Willis.

For Bentwater residents looking for a way to get rid of all those old paint cans stored in your garage, this is your closest, timely opportunity to do so at the address above.

The Precinct #3 staff will accept the following items:

Besides her commitment at PACN, Claudia is heavily involved with the Montgomery County United Way, serving on four of their committees.

Further, Claudia is Vice-President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Plantersville. This active organization serves the needy in Grimes County in cri-sis situations.

Claudia is an active member of the Texas Women's Republican organization and was a delegate to the state convention this year.

There are many homes in Bentwater where the house numbers have not yet been installed or cannot be seen due to overgrown shrubbery, lack lighting, or perhaps some other reason. They should be CLEAR and VISIBLE FROM THE STREET, DAY and NIGHT, which is a benefit to others as well as you. In case of emergencies, fire trucks and ambulances (and even the pizza delivery person) can easily find you if your numbers can quickly be seen. To assist you, if needed, in this process, there are nine options for lighted house numbers and one solar powered address illuminator crown that have received prior approval from the architectural control committee. Samples are on display and detailed information is available at the POA office in the event you wish to order from the manufacturer one of the pre-approved lighted house number plaques.
