As in the past, there will be sign-up sheets in the Narthex and at the Chapel exit doors for you to use in signing-up families in need beginning the weekend of November 17-18.

Once you have completely provided the information on the form, please drop it in the box wrapped in Christmas paper that will be on the table next to the forms. We would like to have all forms returned by Sunday, December 9th.

You will note that the form asks for the name and phone number of the parishioner making the referral, please know that this name is never revealed to the recipients. It is important that we have your name in case we have a question concerning the delivery, but your name is kept confidential.

We are most grateful for those of you who will make referrals and bring food each week. By serving those in need, we will truly be feeding Christ this Christmas (Matthew 25:37-40).

THE MARTYRS OF VIETNAM

The memorial of Andrew Dung-Lac (1795–1839) celebrates all of the Vietnamese Martyrs in the 17th-19th centuries. Christianity was brought to Vietnam in 1533 when the first Portuguese missionary arrived, and the faith was spread widely during the 17th century. However, Christians were often mistaken for activists or enemies of the ruling party and as a result, many were martyred. One of these was St. Andrew Dung-Lac who was born in 1795 in a poor, pagan family. When he was twelve the family moved to Hanoi to find work. There St. Andrew met a catechist and received food and shelter with him. The catechist taught him of the Christian faith for three years. He converted to Christianity and was ordained a priest in 1823. St. Andrew Dung-Lac was tireless in his preaching, often fasted, and led a simple, moral life. He was Christ-like in his life, and many people were baptized as a result. He was arrested twice, but each time the people purchased his release by giving money to the authorities. However, because the Saint kept preaching the gospel, he was arrested again and taken to Hanoi, where he suffered torture and beheading, becoming a martyr for the faith. Many others in Vietnam were also murdered for their faith, yet, they remained true to Christ. Things to Do: · Find out more about the suffering of the

Church in communist Vietnam. · Ask your catechist to invite a parishioner who

lived in Vietnam and knew of Christian persecution to speak to your religious education class.

· Pray a rosary for those Christians suffering persecution today in Vietnam.

Ministry to the Sick and Homebound. If you know of someone in need, please contact Deacon Jim at the parish office. Anointing of the Sick. This sacrament is offered to all members of the parish and its celebration can be arranged. If you are anticipating surgery, contact the parish office.

Baptism. If you desire Baptism for your children at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, we require the fami-ly to be formally registered members of the parish for at least three months, use contribution envelopes, and attend Mass weekly. After the family has met the above require-ments, please contact the parish office.

Marriage. Arrangements to prepare for the sacrament of marriage needs to be made at least six months in advance. Call Deacon Jim Bindel at the parish office.

As we edge closer to the closing of the liturgical year, the Church selects readings that remind us of the final close: the second coming of Christ. It's easy, perhaps, to forget that this is a dogma of our Catholic faith. We see this dramatic end times language in today's Gospel. "The sun will be dark-ened ... and the stars will be falling from the sky."

As Christians and as human beings, we know all things will come to an end. "But of that day or hour, no one knows." The "end of the world" and end of time at Jesus' coming is in a future unknown. But God has given us beauti-ful reminders of this truth. We see the signs and symbols of ending all around us -- nightfall at the end of each day; the life cycle of crops coming alive, bearing fruit, and being harvested; our own death. That, too, will come at an unknown day and hour. But that is the way of things. Even as God cre-

ated in Genesis, He gave us a sense of time -- the sun rising and setting, a beginning and an end -- to mark our days.

So how do we welcome these built-in forms of measurement? Do we take time to quietly recollect at the end of each day? Do we see every morning as a fresh start for mercies new? Do we observe the seasons and reflect on what they might be speaking to us of God and His glory? "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my works will not pass away." The little beginnings and little ends are opportunities to renew our faith in Jesus, if only we have the eyes to see!
