Todays hymnals are somewhat limited, in that there is onlyspace for four or five verses at most. Hymn publishersassume that people will sing only that number and thenfigure that is long enough! It didnt used to be that way.Often, hymn writers wrote many more verses, particularly ifthey were setting a metrical psalm, which was most popularwith Reformed writers. I have a hymnal from 1843 that has athousand hymns (no tunes, just text). Charles Wesley wroteeighteen verses to our opening hymn, O for a ThousandTongues to Sing,in celebration of the first anniversary ofhis conversion to Christ. Our hymnal uses verses seven,
eight, nine, ten, and one of the original in that order. Quiteoften, hymns tell stories or state theological truths andso the thought pattern carries from verse to verse. Eachverse was part of a larger statement of faith. So peoplewill sing all the verses to complete the thought. Thereare several hymnals from the 1840s in the display case in
the Worship Arts Department hallway.Stop by and take alook. - Dr. Dan Sharp

*Passing of the PeaceSt. Paul always greeted with the words, The peace of God be
with you. This is an appropriate way to greet fellow brothers
and sisters in Christ, and so we say, The peace of the Lord be
with you and respond, And also with you. We then pass this
greeting of peace to one another. At the passing of the peacewe should earnestly desire Gods peace upon each person we
greet.
