Despite the extreme threat of grassfires across Wyndham this summer, a report has found the city does not need a Neighbourhood Safer Place (NSP), which would provide a last-resort shelter for people in immediate danger.

The report, presented to Wyndham council last Monday night, followed a risk analysis by the Wyndham Municipal Fire Management Planning Committee.

It determined that grassfires, rather than bushfires, posed the most significant threat, and the current mitigation strategies lowered the likelihood of these affecting the community to the extent which would demand an NSP.

The CFA Act was recently amended to require all councils to consider NSPs, which are designed for use during a bushfire and for people whose other plans have failed.

In Wyndham, only Mount Cottrell was identified in the report as being at major risk of being impacted by grassfires.

The planning committee recommended against introducing an NSP in Wyndham due to the lack of bushfire threat in the municipality, the minimal distance to retreat from rural to urban areas and the council- enforced 30-metre firebreak around towns during the fire danger period.

It was also considered that introducing an NSP in Wyndham would cause people travelling towards it to gridlock local roads, blocking access for emergency services.

Harrison ward councillor Glenn Goodfellow, a CFA volunteer, said the decision not to introduce an NSP in Wyndham was justified.

The best thing in the event of a significant grassfire in Wyndham is to go two streets back; thats your designated safe place, he said.

They capture our awkward phases, embarrassing haircuts and clothes, but as we grow older we tend to look back at our school photos with a sense of nostalgia.

With memories in mind, one former Werribee High School (now Werribee Secondary College) student has embarked on an ambitious project to track down the students from the schools first 32 years.

Colin Foot arrived from England with his family in 1954 and two years later was among the first intake at Werribee High, which at that stage was called Werribee Elementary and integrated with the primary school in Deutgam Street.

He remembers the first headmaster of the high school, George Morris, as a man with a booming voice. One of his first teachers was Miss Bevan, and a Hungarian teacher coached the volleyball team through three undefeated years.

Now, Mr Foot, 71, has developed a website where he has gathered together more than 350 school and class photos from 1956 to 1988 and hopes to finally put names to faces.

They never used to put names on school photos, so its been a difficult task, he said.

Anyone with memorabilia or recollections of Werribee High School can e-mail Mr Foot at [email protected] or visit www.werribeehighschool.info.

Police are hunting for two men (pictured) after an alleged assault on a 50-year-old man in Point Cook earlier this month.

Detectives believe the victim had an argument with an unknown man in a hotel on Point Cook Road on November 11.

An altercation then broke out between the two outside the hotel about 7.30pm.

A third man ran up and pushed the victim to the ground, before both of the alleged attackers punched and kicked the man.

The victim sustained serious injuries, including a ruptured eye socket and fractured cheek bone.

Police have released CCTV footage of the men they want to question about the incident.

Young people across Wyndham are learning the ropes and conquering their fears through working together.

Twenty students from Point Cook P-9 College were the latest to take on the high ropes and rock-climbing at Featherbrook Community Centre as part of Wyndham Councils Working Together program.

The councils youth portfolio holder, Cr Marie Brittan, says the program gives young people the chance to gain important life skills.

It aims to provide young people with an opportunity to face their fears by being challenged to complete adventure-based activities, she said.

Theyll undertake problem-solving activities that help them in their development and will learn personal and social skills, like leadership, trust, communication and collaboration, that will help them forge their way in the world.

One of the other benefits of this program is that it empowers young people by encouraging them to recognise their potential and build their confidence.

The activities in this program are also designed to create team-building skills. That, in turn, develops their capacity to not only recognise their own worth but the worth of others.

The councils youth services are now being provided from satellite locations, including Point Cook.

The Peter Moody-trained Cadillac Mountain stormed home to take out the $80,000 Werribee Cup last Thursday.

Expertly ridden by Chad Schofield, the four-year-old started as the pre-race favourite and duly saluted before a crowd of about 1500 at

Cadillac cruises in for cup winWerribee Racecourse. It was the first time since 2007 that the cup had been held at Werribee in the spring, after taking place in December the past two years.

Racegoers were divided over the success of the day.

Werribees Sue Christo said she felt the event had not been the same since 2008, when it was

held in Geelong before being shelved for three years while the track was redeveloped.

However, her husband Alex said he had enjoyed the day.

One group of spectators who had been attending the cup for 40 years told Star Weekly that the cup race was held too late in the day and that the event had no atmosphere.

Another group said it was disappointing there was not a bigger crowd, but vowed they would return next year to support the event.

Other highlights included an appearance by three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux, who paraded down the main straight prior to the big race, and fashions on the field added a touch of glamour and style.

WHICH POLITICAL PARTY WILL EASE WYNDHAMS CONGESTION?

    WWW.GETWYNDHAMMOVING.COM.AUVIEW THE ELECTION SCORECARD AT

    By Laura Michell

Wyndhams bus network will be boosted regardless of which party wins Saturdays election.

Last week, Labor pledged to fill the missing links in the citys bus services as part of a $100 million investment in Victorias bus networks.

The need for improved bus services in Wyndham has featured heavily on the councils election wish- list, with Cr Glenn Goodfellow saying the services were critical to the outer suburbs.

The city has the most infrequent and indirect bus services in Melbourne, with many residents living more than 400 metres from a bus stop.

Cr Goodfellow has urged both major parties to spend money on the citys bus network sooner rather than later.

Four years from now, Wyndham will have another 12,000 households [and] 40,000 residents, he said. Buses, in political terms appear to be the ugly duckling of the transport system.

Altona MP Jill Hennessy vowed, if her party is elected, to improve the municipalitys bus routes, boost services for people living in Sanctuary Lakes and establish new routes to service the Wyndham Vale and Tarneit Regional Rail Link (RRL) stations.

The changes will be in addition to the proposed services outlined by Public Transport Victoria in its recent network review.

The opposition pledge follows the announcement of a Coalition plan to also deliver new services for the RRL stations and Sanctuary Lakes, and improve train and bus connections on the Werribee line.

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said the Coalitions plan would deliver a high-quality transport service to move more people more often.

Ms Hennessy said that if Labor was elected, it would consult local communities and councils to establish the new routes and discuss routes that were axed by the state government last year.

Backing for ugly duckling busesThe seat of Altona is considered to be among Victorias safest.

Breast cancer survivors across the west became models for a day when they glammed up for a BreastWest Fashion Gala at Moonee Valley Racing Club.

The event raised more than $60,000 for BreastWest, which helps improve care for breast cancer sufferers.

Truganina resident Rachel Spitts was cheered on by a large group of family and friends when she walked down the runway on the arm of Western Bulldogs player Nathan Hrovat.

I was very keen, she said. Its been such a crappy year and I wanted to feel special and meet other women who had been, not exactly in my shoes, but understand what its like to have gone through what weve gone through.

The 33-year-old mother of one found a lump on her breast while taking a shower late last

year and was diagnosed with breast cancer two days before Christmas..

Ms Spitts, who was treated at Sunshine and Footscray hospitals, had a lumpectomy in early January, four rounds of chemotherapy, further surgery to remove pre-cancerous cells and radiation.

The results from a recent mammogram and ultrasound found her clear of cancer.

Ms Spitts praised her doctors, nurses and family for their support in the past year.

Theyve all been so amazing, she said. I absolutely loved the nurses, and I loved my surgeon and my oncologist Ive been so happy with all of them. We can have a better Christmas this year, thats for sure.

Doctors and lawyers take them and now a Werribee financial planner wants to introduce a professional oath across his much- maligned industry.

In response to the ongoing stream of negative publicity surrounding rogue operators, including the Commonwealth Banks financial planners scandal, Vern Fettke launched the oath in Werribee last week aiming to re-establish some of the trust between planners and public.

Theres a level of suspicion in the community about financial planners that is completely out of proportion to how the vast majority of us conduct ourselves professionally, he said.

Too often, the only news coverage youll get is when something goes wrong for investors. Those stories have negative repercussions across the whole industry.

I want to bust the myth that financial planners are not to be trusted and invite anyone in the industry who has a proven and highly regarded reputation to take a professional oath that cements their dedication to their client.

The oath has received support from Australian Securities and Investment Commission chairman Peter Kell and federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan.

Wyndhams soaring population, high teenage pregnancy rates and rising domestic violence reports have prompted a Sydney-based charity to expand to the municipality.

The Life Changing Experiences Foundation will bring its SISTER2Sister program to Melbourne from next year, after receiving a $30,000 grant from Jetstars Flying Start grassroots funding program.

The money will allow the foundation, which has been running in Sydney for 10 years, to kick-start its national expansion, beginning with Wyndham.

SISTER2Sister helps girls from backgrounds of abuse, neglect, domestic violence and poverty who are in need of leadership and guidance by providing them with a mentor.

Chief executive Jessica Brown said there was a strong need for the program in Melbourne, where there was already a waiting list of girls who have been nominated by community services to take part.

The year-long program is designed to break the cycle of inter-generational social issues.

Ms Brown said many of the girls who took part in the program were facing homelessness or police custody, while just under half had attempted suicide or self-harm or were battling depression.

The participants are referred to the program by police, schools, youth services and their families.

Big sisters guide the girls and help them pick the pieces up and set goals, Ms Brown said.

Its also a risk management program. We dig deep to give [the girls] the tools they need to be able to deal with a crisis and help build their self-confidence. We also run activities for them so they can have fun. Many of the girls in

    Sisters unite for

the program have adult responsibilities. Many are caring for parents or siblings, or they had to grow up way too early. We provide them with activities to help them forget about their responsibilities for a while.

Ms Brown said the program was being rolled out in Wyndham because the city had a growing youth population in need of help.

Urgent funding required to address Wyndhams health needs

    To the editor

The critical need for funding at Werribee Mercy Hospital will become more crucial as each month passes.

The population of Wyndham is growing every day and with each person that chooses to make Melbournes south west their home, more pressure mounts on an already stretched hospital. It is important to note that the number of people living in the region is expected to increase by more than 114 per cent to 384,000 over the next 20 years.

The hospital has recently received State and Federal Government funding, which has provided geriatric and rehabilitation services and will deliver a new mental health inpatient facility. Both of these initiatives are welcomed and needed, however, neither address the signifi cant shortfalls in access to critical health services that Melbournes south west encounters. Without services such as critical care, high dependency and a range of inpatient beds, some residents are forced to use services, which will be at least 37km away.

This shortfall is also forcing the hospital to transfer up to 90 patients each month as its current infrastructure is unable to provide the level of care required. In fact, current funding allows the hospital the ability to provide care to 40.6 per cent of Wyndham residents leaving 59.4 per cent to seek care elsewhere.

These fi gures are diffi cult to argue with and highlight that the Wyndham community faces some of the poorest access to health services in metropolitan Melbourne. Whilst any funding to the western region will help, it must also be noted that funding neighbouring health services in Footscray, Sunshine, Bacchus Marsh or Geelong will not address these issues.

Werribee Mercy Hospital works closely with its neighbouring health services and is committed to building partnerships which ensure the most effi cient and effective delivery of care within the western region. However, while some services can and should be provided offsite, others should not and the community should not accept anything less.

Despite diffi culties in serving the needs of its community, Werribee Mercy Hospital is still a valued part ofthe fabric of Wyndham. A recent survey found 95 per cent of its patients would recommend the hospital to their family and friends.

Whilst there is no greater recommendation a hospital can receive, the hospital is still failing many due tothe limitations imposed on it by a lack of a necessary and reasonable State public funding commitment.

For the residents of Wyndham to continue to trust that their local hospital can provide the services they desperately need, the community needs a commitment of $85 million from both Premier Denis Napthineand Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews.

This funding will deliver the next stage of Werribee Mercy Hospitals Master Plan, which will include eight critical care beds, six operating theatres, 56 inpatient beds and a Central Sterile Supply Department.

Mercy Health and the Wyndham community are calling on both major political parties to allocate funds where they are most needed. The Wyndham community will continue to grow in the days, years and decades to come and without an investment now, it will remain disadvantaged and the hospital will forever be playing catch up.

    Yours sincerely

Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen Chief Executive Offi cer Mercy Health

A Footscray man trapped in his car for more than three hours last week following a horrendous five-vehicle crash on the Princes Freeway at Point Cook has died in hospital.

The 54-year-olds car was rear-ended by a truck while sitting in traffic near the Forsyth Road exit on Thursday, November 13.

His car then struck a second truck, pushing it into a second car which then hit a third truck.

With his car crushed between two trucks, the man was trapped for more than three hours before being airlifted to The Alfred hospital.

He died there on Sunday night. There were no other injuries as a result

of the incident.Police are yet to formally interview the

driver of the first truck to hit the mans car. Detective Sergeant Chris Carnie, of the

major collision investigation unit, said police were still investigating the collision and he urged anyone with information to come forward.

Weve done a lot of work around piecing together this collision and we are aware there were a number of other vehicles in the vicinity when it happened, he said.

We really need these drivers to come forward so we can speak to them and get a full picture of whats happened.

I urge the drivers and these people know who they are to call Crime Stoppers so we can follow up with them.

Anyone with any information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

    Dear Resident

You may have seen in last weeks Wyndham Star Weekly that Werribee South residents are having trouble with their parcel delivery services with Australia Post.

Residents should not be expected to travel 20km, which on public transport could mean a round trip on 3 hours, to pick up a parcel from the postal centre in Hoppers Crossing.

I am keen to ensure our community is well served by government services. Please touch base with my office if you have any similar Australia Post service issues.

I have called on the Government to resume parcel delivery services to Werribee South. As an interim measure I will also lobby for the installation of a parcel locker service in Werribee South.

Please contact my office if you have any similar government service issues, this could be postal issues, reporting a Mobile phone blackspot, access to broadband and the NBN. Also touch base if you think your area could benefit from a parcel locker service in your area.

Again dont hesitate to contact my office if you have any Federal issues.

    Yours sincerely

Whats your connection to the local community?I live in Manor Lakes with my family and have been here for 10 years. Prior to that I lived in Werribee from age 5.

Im captain of Wyndham Vale CFA and have been since July, but Ive been involved with the brigade from its conception in 2011. Its a completely volunteer-run brigade with about 41 operational members and about eight support crew. We train every Tuesday morning. My involvement with the CFA started as a hobby because I like being engaged with the community. Ive made great friendships and learned a lot through different experiences.

Im also a paramedic and have been since 2001. I started my career in Wyndham and am now part of the operational logistics department managing the operational equipment statewide.

Whats your favourite eatery or place to get coffee?Codys Caf in Wyndham Vale. They make a fantastic chocolate thick shake and coffee. We also go for brekkie sometimes on a Sunday. Fresh Chilli Thai restaurant in Wyndham Vale is a good healthy takeaway option.

What do you like about your neighbourhood? Its a great place to live. Theres lots of development and growth providing many opportunities. Within the CFA particularly, we enjoy having an input into what goes on in the area and helping shape our community.

Wyndham has kept a bit of its country feel while becoming a bigger city.

What would you change? The traffic is very frustrating.

    MY WYNDHAM

Theres a lack of funding for the CFA and Ambulance Victoria, which should be increased.

We need better facilities and appliances such as a pumper [truck] for Wyndham Vale like the ones Werribee and Hoppers Crossing CFAs have.

The imposition of a $70 minimum rate and budgeting for a $26,000 deficit has enabled Werribee Shire Council to keep the rise in rates to an absolute minimum. But the rural rate has risen sharply overall by an average of 35.7 per cent.

Plans for Wyndhams long-awaited community health centre are back to square one, with the Department of Human Services re-assessing the project. The department has shelved the original plans, which surfaced in 1992, on the grounds they are now obsolete in favour of a complete re-assessment of the centre.

opportunity for other activities such as snorkelling and stand-up paddle boarding.

Away from the water, Coogee has a host of bars, cafes and restaurants ranging from the big and boisterous Coogee Bay Hotel to hip little joints off the main drag.

Seeking the latter, we were happy to heed a recommendation to book a table at the newish Caf de France on Havelock Street. This little place is a relaxed cafe by day and elegant French bistro in the evening (Thursday to Saturday) with authentic Gallic cuisine.

We were served by the owner herself, French ex-pat foodie Rafaele Yon, who read out each menu item in a way that made us want to try the lot. We settled on sharing the 800-gram rib-eye steak (pour deux) beautifully pan fried and tender and served with roasted vegetables. It was more than enough for the two of us, so

much so we opted to share dessert: the rich, sublime chocolate mousse.

The prices here are very reasonable, with main meals averaging around $30.

Be sure to book for dinner and check if they have their liquor licence yet to save you the run down to Coogee Bay Hotels bottle shop.

I look forward to having brunch there some day, though there are plenty of options including Ms Yons original establishment Le Petite Caf and The Little Kitchen, a cute place with nice big rustic benches and a full view of the galley that gives this place its name.

As well as great coffee, they do nice breakfast fare with a good balance of fancy and healthy options and the ever popular bacon and eggs. It is also open for lunch and dinner.

For pub grub we tried out Five Os, which serves up decent nosh at bargain prices, making

it popular with backpackers. Score a balcony table here, to gaze out over the beach and catch the ocean breeze.

Its a good place for a drink if you prefer something quieter than the Coogee Bay or Coogee Sands hotels, with a decent range of beers and wines. You have to order food to have a drink here; a bowl of chips does the trick.

Accommodation options abound in Coogee. In the mid range is the Dive Hotel, which fortunately doesnt live up to its name.

This boutique family-run hotel is perfectly situated on Arden Street across the road from the beach with prices ranging from around $200 to $320 per night depending on the room and view.

Its an old building but the rooms are nicely renovated with bright contemporary beach house dcor. The king-size bed in our airy

ocean view room (one of three with such views) was very comfortable and if there wasnt so much to do outside youd be forgiven for just chilling in there all day.

Continental breakfast is included, which provides a good opportunity to speak with the owners, who are long-time Coogee residents and full of advice about things to see, do and eat. Its a lot more welcoming than chain hotels and quite a few of my fellow patrons were return customers.

Charm is an elusive quality and a description loosely bandied about in the property market, but this Federation-inspired house in Ashley Gardens estate embodies the true meaning.

Tintinara transcends the average faux-Fed because, while not slavishly replicating the eras style, it has an innate graciousness that harks back to earlier times.

Leadlight panes, dado panels and archway fretwork in natural Tasmanian oak, ceiling rosettes, box bay windows, brass light switches and stepped cornices are brought into sharper focus by the floral Axminster carpet laid in the more formal areas. Cornice strips are painted in a soft green, picking up the carpets

main colour, and this simple facet brings everything together to deliver a true harmony.

This attention to interior detail (and quality) is evident throughout. And the back garden marries beautifully with the house; more about that later.

Facing a large park, the house has four bedrooms, the main off the entry hall; it has a walk-in robe and an en suite with Tassy oak vanity unit and a soft-lilac colour scheme. Another bedroom, through double doors, is next door but would make a fine TV snug. Two more are down a back hallway (lined with four closets), as are the main bathroom with Tassy oak vanity unit and subway tiling, and the laundry with three closets and a workbench.

The lounge-dining room at the front is a picture of elegance, with its box bay window dressed in Austrian blinds (appearing in many rooms) and a cast-iron gas log fire set within a period-style timber surround.

The living hub at the back has a tiled kitchen-meals zone, and a carpeted family section with a lovely leadlight door to the side verandah. The kitchen is all today, with stacks of Tassy oak cabinetry, two-door pantry, appliance cupboard and stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher.

The huge gabled pergola above terracotta tiles is a year-round cracker, enclosed on three sides and the other sheltered by bistro blinds. Terracotta-tiled

walkways head from here to a pretty wooden arbour covered with yellow roses, and to an arched wooden bridge over a river-stone waterway. A spreading Manchurian pear and a giant moptop couple with box hedging, cottage underplanting and sandstone-edged beds to create a truly magical garden.

A garden shed and coloured-concrete utility area are screened behind a high picket fence, keeping the garden haven aesthetic intact.

Ducted heating and cooling, an alarm, surround-sound (in family room) and a remote-controlled double garage with back roller door are other attractions.
