New Zealand’s fi rst eco fashion runway event, held last Saturday, was a resounding success.

Designers from all over the country came to display their ‘upcycled’ clothing – cloth-ing created from second-hand materials and through sustainable practices like recycling material off-cuts and threads.

Continued from page 1Wainuiomata based de-

signer Denise Anglesey, who masterminded the event, said she planned to continue and expand on the concept over the coming years.

“This is just a baby – we’re just growing this.

“What we saw tonight was probably something that we’d ideally like to stage over two or three days. We’d ideally like to hold it as a week-long event.

“I’d love to produce some-thing specifically based in Wainuiomata as well.”

The night was opened by the Sacred Heart College Kapa Haka group, who wowed the crowds not only with their musical performance but with their own ‘upcycled’ costumes in rainbow colours, designed by Ron Tekawa.

New Zealand School of Music student Ashley Mah also performed a violin solo to the crowds.

Wellington designers De-signs on You, Doppelganger and Dane Dagger, some of

Denise’s personal favourites, owned the runway.

“I really like Dane’s stuff in particular– I like the fact that it’s blendable with other garments.

“I think some of these de-signers are really showing us where fashion can go to in the future,” Denise said.

One of the events’ key spon-sors was the Hutt City Coun-cil, and mayor Ray Wallace, who attended the event, spoke enthusiastically in its praise.

“Let’s hope this is the start of many many new eco-based events in the area.”

Designers from as far afi eld as Dunedin, Nelson, Auck-land and Waiheke Island also attended the show - Heke Design, Senorita AweSUMO, Karishma Design, Kila’s Designs, Dear Prudence and Woman of Joppa.

A crowd favourite, however, was the golden, glittery and somewhat wacky designs of Wainuiomata’s own Ghost Train, whose designer Zorro Potion appeared on stage looking as glamorous as her

models. Also in attendance were local

model Hannah Pasene, the now-international face of eco fashion, and New Zealand’s Miss Human-ity International Sarah Taimana Brodrick, who represents the country at global environmental events.

The event was a resounding

success, according to Denise.“I think people were blown

away.“I think that we’ve really shown

people that there are sustainable options out there for fashion.”

“The whole experience has been amazing - just meeting all these amazing people and seeing these designs has been fantastic.”

By Rhiannon McConnellThree Wainuiomata volunteer

groups were honoured for their work at the Hutt City Community Awards last Wednesday evening.

The Wainuiomata Pioneer Church Preservation Society were awarded a Hutt City Wellington Regional Community Award in the Heritage and Environment section for their work on the Coast Road Church.

Volunteer Collen Hira says they were thrilled that their hard work has been noticed.

“It was the last thing we expected.“To be recognized gives you that

feel good feeling.”She says the restoration has

been the work of a few dedicated volunteers.

“That obviously impressed the judges considering there were so few of us doing it.”

The Wainuiomata League Club received runner-up in the Sports and Leasure section for the work of

all their volunteers. Club Treasuer Simon

Itula and Secretary Vivi-ane Itula were presented with the award.

“I was pretty stoked,” Simon says.

“You don’t do it to get appreciated but it is nice when you do.

“We’ve done a lot of hard work.”

T he Wa inu iomata Volunteer Fire Brigade received a commenda-

tion for the work of their volunteers in the com-munity.

Fire Chief Ewen Heron received the award.

The supreme award winners were Ignite Sports, a youth develop-ment organisation based in Lower Hutt.

By Rhiannon McConnellAfter a successful season with

their hit show Grease drawing more than 1,300 people, the Wainuiomata Little Theatre are ready to tackle Jesus Christ Superstar as their next show.

Director Barry Paterson says they chose the show as a chal-lenge.

“We had such amazing com-munity support for Grease and we thought we would stretch ourselves a bit.

“It’s one of the iconic theatre shows.”

The fi rst time theatre director says he did have moments when he thought he would not be back but he says it is all worth it.

“It’s hard work but there’s a

real sense of satisfaction.” He says the group was rela-

tively new to theatre but learnt a lot.

“We have learnt that we can do it.”

Barry says watching the members grow and learn was a really rewarding experience.

“It was just fantastic.”However it was the success of

their last show, Grease, which made it possible for the group to turn their eyes to something bigger.

“If it wasn’t successful, we couldn’t do this.”

Barry says they are looking forward to working with all the special effects the show will require.

“It gives us a chance to stretch ourselves in terms of special effects and lighting.”

He says after Grease fi nished they had people wanting to know what was next.

Barry says they want to en-courage new people to join the Wainuiomata Little Theatre.

“It doesn’t matter if they can sing or dance, once they are in a group it doesn’t matter.”

Barbara Wray will be co directing for another year along side Barry.

Audtions for Jesus Christ Super Star will be held on November 3, and December 1 this year.

They will be running work-shops to introduce people to it.

showed their story-telling skills at Konini Primary School’s outstanding show last week.

The school held it’s two-yearly show at the Wainuio-mata High School auditorium, this years show was Tell Me a Story which had children telling stories and legends from the Pacifi c.

The auditorium was packed with excited parents and sib-lings eager to see the show.

Director and year fi ve and six teacher Sam Woodward says the school has been preparing for it all year and having a whole school show meant every child could be involved.

It is really good for the young-er children to have someone to look up to and the older children learn leadership, she says.

“It overfl owed into the school playground. The older children feel responsible for the younger children and the younger chil-dren know who they can go to.”

Each class room buddied up with another one and chose what story they wanted to tell, she says.

Room one and 12 started off the show with The Storm Boy, an Aboriginal story.

Then came Room two and 11 with The Stolen Mountain, a Cook Island story.

The Legend of the Turtle and the Shark followed, a Samoan story by Room three and 10.

The last three were Maori legends; Room four and nine did their rendition of Maui and the Sun.

Room fi ve and eight put on Tane and the Stars and the fi nal story was The Star Fishes by Room six and seven.

The school uses the Wai-

nuiomata High School auditorium for their shows because their school hall quite small.

They have had help from students at the high school who did the lighting and music.

There were three shows, a matinee on Tuesday, which had a few less people because it was during the day.

However, the two evening shows on Wednesday and Thursday were sold out and they were having to turn some people away.

Sunvalley Kindergarten has a new head teacher who plans to strengthen the kindergarten’s relationship with the community and be there for the kids.

Head teacher Karen McDowell says “What we have been trying to do

is build the relationship with the community.”

They held a disco earlier this term and celebrated International Pirate day last Thursday by getting all the children to dress up.

Karen says they want to work with parents to build an honest and

respectful environment. “That’s what it is all about. “We are here for the kids.”The kindergarten also welcomed

another new teacher, Meera Balaji, to the team.

Along with their new teaching staff, they held a blessing ceremony for their newly renovated building last Friday.

Pukeatua Marae Kaumatua Sep Taitua blessed the renovations which were completed at Christmas time when they rebuilt the inside of the building.

Young businessman Sean Grey, 28, is raking in the profi ts after buying his own business, Parade Hydraulics and Engineering.

The business, which specializes in both servicing and repairing hydraulic machinery and in manufac-turing hydraulic equipment, has a turnaround of more than one million a year.

Sean has worked for the company since he fi nished an apprenticeship in mechanical maintenance and diagnostics six years ago, leaving in 2012 but return-ing this year to take it over.

“Working here, I could see where the business could be improved.

“It’s been great to be back here and being able to make the decisions and set things up how I want them.”

Volunteer Joyce Lockyer says a group of members and their husbands were involved in the working bee.

“It was just such a wonderful team effort, because none of us are very young!”

She says it was a lot of work but they are happy with what was achieved.

“We were very tired by the end of the day. It was pretty untidy - now it just looks brilliant.”

Their next project in this area will be to plant hydrangeas and, if funds permit, planting fi ve of the beautiful species Awanui Flowering Cherry

New website launched for parents in the Hutt Valley

The Warehouse Wainuiomata spent the month of July fundraising for Wellington Children’s Hospital. Wainuiomata customers helped to raise $3,604 to donate to the charity through in store activites, as well as the add-a-dollar campaign where customers were asked if they wanted to add a dollar to their total purchase.

The total amount raised in the region was $66,020. Fundraising Coordinator for the Wellington Hos-

pitals & Health Foundation Shona Brunton says she was thrilled to learn how much was raised during this year’s campaign.

“This fantastic donation is going to fund the purchase of numerous pieces of medical equipment

as well as the development of a new ‘toy cleaning’ room in the Children’s Hospital.

“The support of The Warehouse

management, staff and customers will make a real difference to Child Health Services and we are most grateful to everyone involved.”

If you are a parent who has ever felt over-whelmed, or found the school holidays approaching with no ideas on what to do, worry no more.

Four Hutt-based women have just launched ‘Hutt Kids’, an innovative new website cover-ing everything a parent might need to know to raise a child in the area.

The website was the brain-child of local mother Hayley Lowe, after she noticed the desperate lack of such information.

“I had my kids quite close together and ended up with quite bad post-natal depression.

“The only way I could get through it was to have my week and weekends all planned – but that proved really hard to do.”

However, the demands of child-rearing and work, and the complexity of the project meant it took two years for ‘Hutt Kids’ to offi cially kick-off, Mrs Lowe said.

“We initially approached the Hutt City Council for sponsorship and were declined – but then they approached us four months ago and offered to help.”

‘Hutt Kids’ gives webpage links, contact details and information about clubs and events in the area.

It is also open to members of the public, en-couraging anyone and everyone to submit their own content to be displayed on the website for free – everything from club details and activi-ties to birthday party plans and celebrations of kid’s achievements.

“We want people to interact with the website, and let us know what programmes they’ve got on and what their kids have been doing.

“I think the website is really about the com-

munity, and getting people together. The website launched on September 15, and

within four days had already had 425 likes on Facebook and more than 40 public comments and submissions.

“Our vision for the future is putting kids’ stories and pictures up on the website too, and hopefully collating everything into a book for the one year anniversary of our launch

“If the website goes well, it would be really neat to do one for Wellington city next,” Mrs Lowe said.

‘Hutt Kids’ is currently looking for sponsors so the website can continue to keep up-to-date and active.

Dear Ed,I have lived in Wainuiomata for twenty-fi ve

years and for most of that time the Queen Street shops have been fairly neat and tidy but recently I have noticed that number ten Queen Street is looking very untidy.

A broken window upstairs above the vacant shops reveals a ceiling that is falling in and the paint is coming off around the window frames.

It is little wonder that the population of Wainuiomata is declining when we have that standard of building in our main shopping area.

The person or people who own this building should repair it or sell it to someone who is willing to repair it. With the local body elec-tion looming this should be a timely reminder that politicians should be looking after our community.

I may never see a public toilet in the centre of Wainuiomata but I would like to think that when I walk down Queen Street I do not see buildings that have not had any maintenance for years. Is it possible that this building could be maintained or is Wainuiomata truly in decline and the residents subjected to a new low standard that I fi nd unacceptable? Yes, the state of the economy has not been good over recent years and there are empty shops around but that is no excuse for neglecting maintenance on a building that most of us see at least once a week.

10 Wednesday September 25, 2013

Each week the Wainuiomata News will speak to candidates in this years Local Government Elections.

This week we talk to those standing for the Wainuiomata Community Board.

Rawiri EvansWainuiomata

What’s your background?I been involved with the Welling-

ton Regional Council for the last three years on the natural resource committee which opened my eyes to working at a council level. I have

also done a lot of work in govern-ance roles and want to work with in my own community.

Why should people vote for you for the Wainuiomata Com-munity Board?

This my fi rst time standing but I will give 100 per cent if elected to the role and the people I am working for with in Wainuiomata.

What do you want to see change in the community?

We are in a time of change cur-rently that we need to ensure our voice and community is not just pushed a side by others in the bigger picture.

What is your biggest achieve-ment to date?

Hutt city Civic award 2012 for

services to the community and disability sector

Karl DicksonWainuiomata

What’s your background?Besides being a local husband and

dad, I have spent the last couple of decades in youth/community work. In that time I have also had extensive experience in governance roles, as well as leadership at a local

and national level. Why should people vote for you

for the Wainuiomata Community Board?

Firstly, I want to see people vote as it is privilege that many in our world do not have. Spending the last three years as a board member has given me a greater understanding of Local Government and how it operates at a Community Board level, as well as the chance to prove

myself to the our community. I would ask people to vote for me if they believe that I can build on the last three years.

What do you want to see change in the community?

Politicians at any level will always give their opinions about what they think needs to change in our community. Yet I believe that if we want to change the world around us, we need to start with ourselves.

I need to fi nd new ways to listen to and connect with people who have previously not had a voice around the Community Board Table-their voice needs to be heard more than any politician!

What is your biggest achieve-ment to date?

My two beautiful daughters!

Mike GriggWainuiomata

What’s your background?I moved to Wainuiomata in

1986 and I brought up my boys in Wainuiomata as a solo dad and now a welfare guardian and benefi ciary.

I love sport, especially rugby, but I have been an advocate for dis-ability issues, education and local

government.My political activities involve be-

ing a political advocate in running petitions, making submissions and speaking to the community board, council government and speaking to select committees in parliament.

Why should people vote for you for the Wainuiomata Com-munity Board?

I have good knowledge of the community and annual plans and the 17 activities in Hutt City Coun-

cil Documents which work better for our community - especially fl ooding, which I have done lot of work on.

I have also been promoting the Social issue round alcohol to make our community safe. I like our local community plan reviewed.

I have done a lot of work on what people call the supercity which has been effective.

What do you want to see change in the community?

With the uncertainty of what is happening in local Government reforms it is unwise to make any promises and secondly a commu-nity board is designed to provided advocacy.

What is your biggest achieve-ment to date?

My achievement is my advocacy work the done on local government reforms and winning the support of Mayor Wallace regarding the new legislation on alcohol.

Rima WorkmanWainuiomata

What’s your background?I came to Wainuiomata in January

1971. I attended Jack and Jill Kin-dergarten, Wainuiomata Primary, Parkway intermediate, and Wai-nuiomata College. I spent a decade in Australia, where I trained in the

Early Childhood sector, eventually owning a Childcare Centre before returning to Wainuiomata in 2001.

Why should people vote for you for the Wainuiomata Com-munity Board?

I am passionate and dedicated member of the community and I am prepared to advocate for all members of Wainuiomata and listen to their concerns and their needs and assist in any way I can

to bring good positive changes to benefi t all of Wainuiomata.

What do you want to see change in the community?

I believe we need more employ-ment and training opportunities, more activities for youth, and a rejuvenated community spirit. I would like to see more community events and a greater awareness and promotion of all the facilities,

clubs, and support that we have in Wainuiomata.

What is your biggest achieve-ment to date?

Defi nitely completing my tertiary studies and owning my own busi-ness. Achieving both of these goals has giving me the knowledge and skills to work effectively with a vast variety of people in different capacities.

Terry StallworthWainuiomata

What’s your background?I am currently the Chairperson

of the Wainuiomata Community Board and have been on the Board for six years and have lived in Wainuiomata for 20 years. I have worked with youth since fi rst com-ing to New Zealand as a Wainui

SPORT Co-coordinator, Wainui youth worker, Wainui Police J Team member and am currently with the Hutt City Council as a Community Recreation Program-mer. I also coach a variety of sports including Basketball, Indoor Netball and Touch Football.

Why should people vote for you for the Wainuiomata Com-munity Board?

Because I will advocate for the best interest of the community, I

believe as a community we should be heard and be involved in any decisions that will impact on our community.

What do you want to see change in the community?

More employment opportunities for our community and for the Wainuiomata Police Station to be manned 24 hours as in the past.

What is your biggest achieve-ment to date?

That would be the Wainuiomata

Emergency Response Plan which is the template nationally through-out New Zealand. Also the free parking time extension in Queen St from 60 to 120 minutes for our struggling local retailers along with unlimited parking behind the Woa Community Centre for our volunteers and community service providers.

11Wednesday September 25, 2013

Each week the Wainuiomata News will speak to candidates in this years Local Government Elections.

This week we talk to those standing for the Wainuiomatan Community Board.

Campbell BarryWainuiomata

What’s your background? My background is in youth work,

community development, project management and governance.

Why should people vote for you for the Wainuiomata Com-

munity Board?I bring with me a skill set that is

ideal for the Wainuiomata Com-munity Board. I have strong con-nections with business, community organisations and experience being on boards.

I know how to bring together people from across the community to work alongside one another.

What do you want to see change in the community?

I want to see more people involved in our community.

If we increase the number of people actively engaged it will enhance our community.

I would achieve this by listening to the needs, concerns and aspira-tions that people have and bring

their voice to the Community Board.

What is your biggest achieve-ment to date?

With support of my wife Aimee, changing my role to become a stay at home Dad for our daughter Ellie.

Margaret WillardWainuiomata

What’s your background?I have worked with people of all

ages through teaching, Playcentre supervision, parenting, SPELD teaching, work with older people, freelance journalism and voluntary work including Samaritans and Parent Help. I have lived in Wai-

nuiomata 17 years, am married to Lionel, and have two sons and fi ve granddaughters.

Why should people vote for you for the Wainuiomata Community Board?

I have already proven my com-mitment and effectiveness through representing and working with the community over six years as chair and deputy chair of the board and as local city councillor.

What do you want to see change

in the community?Firstly, I would like to see our

residents listened to on the issue of limiting the number of liquor stores in the community. Then I would like to see a confi dent, thriv-ing community full of successful businesses offering both basic and unique goods and services. They will provide local employment, keep locals spending in the valley, and attract people from over the hill and around the world to spend

money here. Residents of all ages would see a place for themselves in our community in terms of employ-ment, making a contribution, and options in later years.

What is your biggest achieve-ment to date?

Becoming a city councillor, and in the role knowing I have in various ways made a positive difference for the city and the community.

Richard SinnottWainuiomata

What’s your background? Business management, including

people development and relation-ship building aiming to achieve the best outcome for all parties.

Why should people vote for you for the Wainuiomata Com-munity Board?

Because I am able to build relationships and work with a wide range of people to achieve results for our community.

What do you want to see change in the community?

I want us to have a vision as a

community of how we see our-selves in the future, what changes we want to make and then have a plan in place to work towards that. I would also like to look at improv-ing the Queen Street retail area.

This is such a busy spot at night I think it would be great to have some extra lighting and to refurbish the planting and aesthetics of the area.

What is your biggest achieve-ment to date?

My biggest achievement would have to be my children,

I am very proud of how they are doing at school and the way they are getting involved in extra cur-ricular activities.

Heather RobbWainuiomata

What’s your background? I was born in Balclutha then

spent most of my childhood living in power station villages. First was Roxburgh, then Waipapa on the Waikato River from where I attended school in Mangakino.

Moved to Wellington as a teenager then, when married, lived in Ali-cetown for over twenty-fi ve years. Have now been in Wainuiomata for about seven years and love it, even though I still feel like a ‘newbie’.

Why should people vote for you for the Wainuiomata Com-munity Board?

Elected to Board as an inde-pendent in 2010. Realise I don’t have such a high profi le as some

candidates, but am okay with that, as I don’t believe it is the function of a board member to push their own cause/s. The Board exists to represent, and act as an advocate for, the interests of the community, so it has been great to have had so many community members and groups come to Board meetings to voice their wishes and concerns.

What do you want to see change in the community?

There is always room for improve-ment in the community and reju-venation/revitalisation of Queen St would be a good starting point. A campaign to get potential fi rst home owners to seriously consider the many benefi ts of living in Wai-nuiomata is another idea.

Joshua BriggsWainuiomata

What’s your background? My background is in youth work,

community development, project management and governance.

Why should people vote for

At Jack and Jill Early Learning Centre children learn through play. Jack and Jill head teacher’s Chris Moses and Jenny Keomany say they place a big emphasis on the importance of children learning while exploring and having fun. Play is natural and spontaneous to children. Through the freedom of play, exploring and experimenting children are given the opportunity to learn and extend their interests and imagination while hard at work. The teachers are focused on extending children’s knowledge

and understanding in preparation for their next stage of learning such as the children transitioning from the under two’s to the kindergarten, from the kindergarten to school and for lifelong learning. ‘Discovery Time’ is a programme which is offered to the children daily, this is based on the children’s interests and discovery of learning. The teacher’s passion for children’s learning is constantly demonstrated throughout the daily programme and is evident that the children are learning and enjoying themselves through laughter and play.

Then& Now

By Shannon Sweetman Massey Journalism Student

Take a trip down memory lane with the Coast Road Historical Church as we revisit the union of two of Wai-nuiomata’s oldest pioneer families.

Lucy Helen Wood and Kenneth Raymond Ibell were married in 1935, a mere two decades before the church fell into disuse.

President of the Wainuiomata Pioneer Church Preservation Society Joyce Lockyer said the account of the wedding, published in the Hutt News, was a favourite amongst the committee members.

“We fi nd some of the descriptions hilarious. They’re obviously very dated.

“The picture as well is a classic – the bride is holding one of those huge bouquets that almost dwarfs the little lady.”

The wedding is of special signifi -cance to the Preservation Society as descendants of the Ibell family are some of its current members.

Members of both the Wood and Ibell families were also buried in the small graveyard at the church, Wainuiomata’s oldest graveyard, she said.

An actual account of the wedding, as published in the Hutt News, follows:

In the Methodist Church, Wainuio-mata, between Kenneth Raymond Ibell and Lucy Helen Wood. Married by the Rev J Sage.

The wedding was solemnised re-

cently at the Wainui-o-mata Method-ist Church (which had been tastefully decorated for the ceremony) of Lucy Helen, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs J. L. Wood of Wainui-o-mata and Kenneth Raymond, younger son of Mr and Mrs J, H. Ibell, Petone.. The officiating minister was the Rev. J. Sage, the organist being Mrs Barnard.

The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a beautiful gown of white princess crepe, moulded to the fi gure, fl aring gracefully and with cowl sleeves finishing with points over the wrists. Her hand-embroidered veil fell from a circlet of orange blossoms and she carried a shower bouquet of roses, heath and maidenhair fern.

The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Ngaire Wood, who wore a pretty frock of apricot princess crepe, made on fi tting lines fl aring from the knees, with cape sleeves and hat and mittens to match. Her bouquet was of apricot roses and maidenhair fern. The best man was Mr. H. M. Ibell.

After the ceremony about 130 guests were entertained at a recep-tion held in the Wainui-o-mata Hall and were received by Mrs. Wood, the brides mother, assisted by Mrs. Ibell. Mrs Wood was wearing a brown ensemble relieved with beige, a beige hat and carried a posy of autumn fl owers and maidenhair fern.

Among the guests were the brides grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J.

Wood, the latter wearing a black and white ensemble; and also Mr. J. W. Ibell, grandparent of the bridegroom.

The bride and bridegroom left on a tour of the north, the bride travelling in a royal blue frock, relieved with grey, a Robin Hood hat and coat of royal blue.

Wedding of Wainuiomata’s oldest pioneer families

The Wainuiomata Marae was opened on October 15, 1983. The meeting house was opened on Sep-tember 10, 1988. Many extensions have been added over the years including a prefab which was do-nated earlier this year to be used as a community art room. Photo with permission from Historical Society.

By Shannon SweetmanWainuiomata High School’s

girl’s hockey team has fi nished their season for 2013 undefeated.

Team manager Keri Coleman said the result was an “unbeliev-able accomplishment.”

Their fi nal match for the sea-son, held last Tuesday, was one of their biggest challenges, she said.

“We were under no assump-tions that the game would be easy.

“A strategic white-board ses-

sion replaced Monday night’s training.”

The girls played a ‘smart, strategic game’, and fi nished the night with a 4-0 victory against the St Orans’ school team, she said.

The team started off the 2013 season in the Reserve 3 hockey grade, but played so well that they were moved into the Re-serve 2 grade.

They went on to win every sin-gle game in the Reserve 2 pool.

By Shannon SweetmanTeitjen family of Wainuiomata blitzed

the Pelorus Trust Run and Walk events in both the ten-kilometre run and the ‘Cool Kids Kilometre’ last Sunday 15th.

The family – mum Shelley Tietjens and children Jessica (8), Ashton (6) and Keegan (3) - have been running together as part of the Wainuiomata Harriers and Athletics club since the start of this year.

“I’ve grown up with Wainui Harriers – I would have been about 10 when I started running – so it’s a bit of a family thing,” Shelley said.

Ashton, Jessica and Keegan fi nished 31st, 44th and 95th respectively in the children’s 1km run, open to everyone under 19-years-old.

They also met former New Zealand Olympic athlete and distance runner Anne Hare, who lead the kids in a warm-up before the event.

Shelley, meanwhile, came 72nd overall - but 12th amongst all female competi-tors - in her fi rst time running the 10km

event. The athlete, who has always run com-

petitively, has been juggling childrear-ing and owner-operator responsibilities for her ‘Beauty at Home’ business to train for the event.

“It’s been full-on, but you fi nd time for what you want to fi nd time for.

“I do my running anytime between 6.30-7.30am so I can fi t it all in.”

Sunday’s event had been particularly challenging because of the weather, she said.

“We had the head-wind southerly to run against, so that was hard.

“I didn’t get myself too worked up about the run though – I felt really good about it.”

The family also ran in the local Round the Hills event, a course set over the Wainuiomata Hill, last Saturday.

Undefeated this season

Right: Jessica, number 172, fi nished 31st in the children’s run.
