A popular swimming spot in Wainuiomata closed for a number of days recently due to increased levels of bacteria which made it unsuitable for swimming.

Hutt City Council advised the public early last week to stay clear of Wainuiomata River, near Richard Prouse Park after regular water quality monitoring found the presence of enterococci bacteria.

While the health risk was not fatal, ingestion of contaminated water could have resulted in diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting. Cuts and skin lesions

could also have become infected as a result of the contaminated water.

Despite the section of water having an orange cautionary status, indicating increased health risk but still within an acceptable range, the council announced the swimming spot had reopened on February 11.

Weekly water quality monitor-ing is a joint initiative between Greater Wellington Regional Council and city and district councils during the swimming season.

The results are published week-ly on the Greater Wellington Regional Council website.

Continued from page 1“It’s my fi rst time competing at an interna-

tional level, so for me it’s a big honour,” says the Wainuiomata sports star.

“When I fi rst started paddling I thought it was only a New Zealand sport but it turns out other countries like Tahiti and Australia also have teams,” she says.

The 18-year-old has over 13 years paddling experience but none of that will prepare her for the training regime she has committed herself to in lead up to the competition.

Ahead of her trip to the world champion-ships, she plans to use a combination of water and land training six days a week to help her prepare.

“It’s very full on. I have been training to-wards this goal for 12 months now and have achieved many milestones on this journey,” Jaleighquar says.

“While it has not been easy I can now look back with a smile and be happy with what I have achieved thus far.

“The second leg of my journey now begins,” she says.

The young athlete is a member of the Kahugnunu Taumata Rau squad that was created as an iwi based initiative to promote

paddlers from the Hawke’s Bay region on a national and global scale.

Jaleighquar has represented the Hawke’s Bay’s Hukarere Girls’ College at the New Zealand Secondary Schools event for the

last fi ve years. She also belongs to Te Rau Oranga o Ngati Kahungunu Waka Ama club and takes part in the open women’s division.

Her most recent success was competing in a crew that placed third at the National Sprints last month.

Jaleighquar was introduced to the sport by a close friend who did waka ama with her family.

“My friend said to join her team and since then I’ve never stopped. I love it,” she says.

The Wainuiomata-based athlete has been fundraising to support her getting to the competition and says community support is still needed.

“It’s quite surprising how supportive the public has been. My auntie is fundraising for me in Hawke’s Bay and my mum is helping down here. So many people are backing me and I am grateful for their support,” she says.

To sponsor Jaleighquar’s trip to the world championships, contact Gretchen Hema via email – [email protected]. Alternatively fi nd Jaleighquar on Facebook.

New parents Troy Mahupuku and Jessica Paine will have to practice what is being preached following the arrival of baby Alaska plus a recent law change.

In November last year, the child restraint law changed in New Zealand.

The new law now enforces drivers to make sure any child under the age of seven is properly restrained by an approved car seat, appropriate for the age and size of the child.

“It is defi nitely something we will have to look out for, after all it is the law now,” Mr Mahupuku says.

Plunket national child safety advisor Sue Campbell says families will continue to be advised to keep children in car restraints well beyond their seventh birthday.

“The simple truth is that car seats and boosters seats save lives. Without a booster seat, an adult seat belt sits too high on a child. They raise children up and position them so they get the full safety benefi t of the adult seat belt,” Ms Campbell says.

Mr Mahupuku, a fi re fi ghter in Lower Hutt, says personally he understands why the law was changed.

“With my career, I know how seats are needed for children. Although I haven’t been to many crashes involving children being injured due to incorrect car seats, proper restraints do prevent injuries,” Mr Mahupuku says.

“Children are too short and small for normal seatbelts. It’s defi nitely safer for them to be in approved car seats,” he says.

The November law change sees New Zealand move towards aligning with other countries, following research explaining why children should remain in car seats longer.

“We would like to see New Zealand law progress even further to see all child pas-sengers up to 11-years-old or up to 148cm in height, use an appropriate child restraint at all times,” Ms Campbell says.

Children to remain in car seats longer

Before the birth of their daughter, Mr Mahupuku and Ms Paine both made sure they bought a certifi ed car seat and asked around to fi nd out which was the best.

“We only looked at the stores that com-plied with New Zealand certifi cates. We even got advice on how to correctly install it in the car,” Ms Paine says.

“Group chats before Alaska was born also helped us understand what type of car seat to get,” Mr Mahupuku says.

Although the family are still a few years away from getting another car seat, they are prepared for travelling with their precious cargo.

“We defi nitely support the change,” Ms Paine says.

“It’s the way forward and a way that parents can assure their children are as safe as possible,” Mr Mahupuku says.

Wainuiomata Plunket Clinic offers child restraints to families in the local com-munity under the umbrella of Hutt Valley Car Seat Rental Scheme, helping families keep children safe.

Alaska was born on January 23 and is the Wainuiomata couple’s only child.

For more information on car seat services in the community, visit your local Plunket Clinic.

The Hutt Valley Primary Science Education Network launched today at an event hosted by Hutt City Council and Open Polytechnic, and aims to address challenges in science education in primary schools.Open Polytechnic Chief Executive Dr Caroline Seelig pointed to the need to encourage more young people to study science so that they have better career opportunities in a world that is increasingly turning to science based innovations to remain globally competitive.“As a fi rst step, we need to build the confi dence of our teachers who don’t have a background in science,” she says. The Open Polytechnic has made their Graduate Certifi cate in Primary Science Teaching (Curriculum) fee free for 2014.Mayor Ray Wallace announced funding of $120,000 by way of a $2,500 Mayoral Scholarship to each Lower Hutt Primary School that has a teacher enrolled in the qualifi cation for additional science resources in support of the teacher doing the qualifi cation.

A hands-on practical cooking programme for people wanting to gain new skills in preparing healthy meals while working on weight management started in Wainuio-mata recently.

Run by Te Awakairangi Health Network (TeAHN) the programme focuses on affordability, dietary needs as well as providing residents with good recipes, information on portion sizes and, tips to reduce fat and salt in cooking.

Health promoter Harley Rogers says the programme uses simple, key messages to motivate people into a healthier way of living.

“It’s a programme for the com-munity by the community,” Mr Rogers says.

“Those who attend leave with worthwhile skills. People learn how to make food healthier while still retaining the fl avour,” he says.

TeAHN is an organisation that plans, funds and provides a wide range of primary healthcare services to people living in the Hutt Valley.

Established in 2012, the organisa-tion has a vision of a healthy Hutt

Valley for all and members are working towards improving the health of the whole population.

While members of the Maori and Pacific Island communities, low-income earning residents tar-geted, Mr Rogers says everyone is welcome.

TeAHN works alongside the New Zealand Heart Foundation and Diabetes New Zealand, to encour-age people to get health checks more often.

Former All-Black Wayne “Buck” Shelford is the face of the ‘Get a heart and diabetes check’ campaign and was in Wainuiomata to spur locals towards a healthier lifestyle.

“It’s a good community initiative. People need to learn how to budget, buy the right food and improve their diets so they can stay healthy,” Mr Shelford says.

The next workshop runs at the Wainuiomata Marae tomorrow, with another two happening on February 27 and March 6.

For more information or to register, contact Harley Rogers on 570 3045. Alternatively people interested can visit www.teawakairangihealth.org.nz.

With roses at the ready, Nina McKenzie, Paige Key, Alicia Groenewegen, Anchal Singh, Ashleigh Low, Kasey Tauaneai, Callum Mackaness, Keana Wild and Jasmine Rivers jumped with joy when they found out they were someone’s valentine.

The school’s head students helped organ-ise the day, with great success and support from fellow peers.

School staff members say it was nice to see the students taking part and giving recognition to the ones they adore.

Two Wainuiomata designers have attracted the attention of the interna-tional fashion world after showcasing their collections at a show in London recently.

Denise Anglesey of DENISE H and Zorro Potion of Ghost Train each had four garments from an earlier New Zealand-based event represented at the sustainable luxury fashion show called A Grinn Fairy Tale on Monday.

Ms Anglesey says it was a last minute decision to attend the event as they were only informed the week before Christmas. This meant the two designers were unable to developing a range for the United Kingdom market.

“The UK has such a big market it is really hard to get into as designers so for us to have this opportunity is great,” Ms Anglesey says.

While they were unable to be there in person, Ms Anglesey and Ms Potion both say it is an extreme honour to have clothes in the international spotlight

and the opportunity is set to create connections with designers around the world.

The two designers decided there was absolutely nothing to lose by sending a few garments and, as a result were able to showcase their designs alongside international icons such as Stella Mc-Cartney and Margaret Howell.

“We’ve defi nitely had international support towards our work and what we do,” Ms Potion says.

“It’s just opened up for us. It’s a whole new thing,” Ms Anglesey says.

The items of clothing from the Wainuiomata designers featured handmade, eco-collaborations and upcycled garments.

Ms Anglesey and Ms Potion says they always knew eco fashion was far bigger internationally than it was here in New Zealand.

“My goal is to create opportunities for designers, to educate the public about ‘eco fashion’ and how it differs from main stream, as well as how people can have sustainable wardrobes

while still looking spectacular,” she says.

Clothing from both labels feature at Eco Boutique in Lower Hutt.

Ms Anglesey says this marks the beginning of a unique collaboration between the two events – the London A Grinn Fairy Tale and last year’s Hutt Valley Eco Runway.

With help from London-based de-signer Stamo, Ms Anglesey has been designing and selling her label DEN-ISE H since 2008 however, Ms Potion has always designed but the garments never left her home until the 2013 Hutt Valley event.

“Attending the Ecoluxe event is paving the way for other designers to attend going forward. We had to break the ice so to speak,” says Ms Anglesey.

The recent fashion show was held on February 17.

As part of routine vehicle stops, Wai-nuiomata Police will be checking cars more thoroughly to see if they are safe enough for the road.

The new approach will involves a fi ve-point ‘twirl’ test that will see police checking tyres, windscreen wipers, mir-rors, indicators, rust and lights. Checks will also be done for loose or damaged parts and warrant of fi tness conditions.

National road policing manager Su-

perintendent Carey Griffi ths says police stop more than 3.5 million vehicles a year and most of these give them the perfect opportunity to make sure vehicles are fi t for the road.

Known as the ‘safe vehicle-safe driver’ check, the new approach means police will assess the safety of the vehicle while at the same time making sure the driver is appropriately licensed.

The vehicle checks support the New

Zealand Transport Agency’s safety campaign which aims to make motorists accept more responsibility towards the roadworthiness of their vehicles - instead of just relying on having a current warrant of fi tness.

Warrant of fi tness regulations in New Zealand were also changed earlier this year. The changes saw extensions on the time between vehicle checks for newer vehicles.

Mr Griffi ths says the focus is on making vehicles safer.

“So our aim is educating drivers and getting vehicles fi xed through compliance options. However, we also want staff to use pink and green stickers to get unsafe vehicles off the road if necessary,” Mr Griffi ths says.

For a complete checklist motor-ists can do themselves, head to www.nzta.govt.nz/checkyourcar.

Letters to the editorDear Ed,While I fi nd your stories well

written and interesting, I was somewhat disappointed to see the story about the cat shooting in this week’s paper.

The owner of the cat seems comfortable with how it was dealt with, and the police are clearly satisfi ed it will not hap-pen again - and I know they are very keen to deal with animal cruelty.

This reaction from others who don’t know the situation isn’t likely to help. I don’t want to continue this, but suggest that quoting strong reactions by peo-ple who don’t know the situation they are opining about does not lead to positive outcomes.

What could have been helpful would be to talk to the owner.

Dissapointed with cat story Young faces nice to seeDear Ed, I found it rather nice to see the younger faces of

our community representing their school on the front page last week. Reading about what they hope to achieve and work on throughout their fi nal year at school was very interesting. They are bright and cheerful and willing to succeed. Our community needs more young people like this. Good luck for the year ahead.

An upgrade of William Jones Park is almost complete follow-ing just over a week’s worth of work.

The Wainuiomata rugby ground now has a drainage system installed under its sur-face which is set to improve the quality of the pitch during winter.

Club chairman Jim Millar says it is great that work is com-

plete; it will bring the playing surface up to the standard of a premier club.

Work to improve the fi eld in-cluded trenches dug about every fi ve metres of the fi eld’s length. It then involved laying drainage pipes, fi lling and compacting stones around it, and covering with soil.

New turf will be laid once it has arrived.

The upgrades to William Jones Park cost about $40,000.

Contractors work to complete the upgrade of William Jones Park.

Concentration levels of carbon monoxide and ni-trogen dioxide are low in Wainuiomata, according to a report published by Greater Wellington Regional Council.

In the past, the region has had good air quality in terms of three indicator pollutants - PM10, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide – and at residential monitoring sites in the community, pollution levels are within national standards.

A spokesperson from the council’s environmental monitoring and investigations department says average con-centrations have declined in Wainuiomata and Upper Hutt

during the past 10 years how-ever, there was no apparent trend in the number of high pollution nights experienced each year.

Emissions from domestic fi res used for home heating is one of the major contributions to poor winter air quality in the greater Wellington area, with households generally using them heat their main living spaces.

A long-term monitoring site in Wainuiomata was launched in 2006 and continues to deliver details relating to air quality in Wainuiomata.

The full report is available at the Greater Wellington Regional Council website.

A vision to make Wainuiomata a better place for all will be made possible through a long-term council community plan (LTCCP).

Supported by members of the Wainuio-mata Community Board, the plan captures the shared vision of residents and outlines key issues on projects facing the area over the next six to 10 months.

While this is one of the fi rst times the local plan has been seen by the current board, deputy chairman Terry Stallworth says the plan needs to be implemented but fi rst board members need to talk with the community to see what they want left on or taken off.

Long term council plan shows better futureWainuiomata’s LTCCP will be a valu-

able tool for Hutt City Council and will help it to assess the priorities of the local community, he says.

The board is set to review the plan every 12 months and incorporate any changes or updates that need to be made as part of the process.

Over the next few months, Mr Stallworth says the community board will be review-ing the current plan and changing it with the help from the public’s feedback.

“Something that I will defi nitely look to push, and most likely will be included, is Wainuiomata’s Urban Growth Strategy and Emergency Response Service,” Mr Stallworth says.

“The biggest part of the plan is the DEPUTY CHAIRMAN: Terry Stallworth

growth and improvement of Wainuiomata. We want people to have their say and suggest what should be added or removed from the plan,” he says.

Councillor Margaret Willard is confi dent the community plan will help shape the direction of the community.

Mrs Willard says at the recent meeting, decisions were made to appoint a group to look at how the board can engage better with the community, while another would work on updating the existing community plan.

Mr Stallworth says the Wainuiomata Hill Rd overbridge proposal will also look to be included by the board.

Wainuomata Community board meetings are held about every six weeks with the next set for April 2.

Have you seen Maritime NZ’s latest lifejacket adverts featuring ‘80’s TV cop Joe Bro? It carries the very important message that lifejackets will not save lives unless they are being worn. Most accidents occur suddenly with no warning – there may be no time to grab a lifejacket, and it’s extremely diffi cult to put on a lifejacket in the water. Many boaties drown less than 200 metres from shore.

While wearing lifejackets in small boats is very important it is not the only step you can take in keeping yourself safe this summer.

• Always check the weather forecast and keep an eye out for changes while you are on the water.• Carry at least one waterproof means of communication.• Make sure your boat and all its equipment are in good condition.• Understand the rules of the road and other bylaws like the 500 ton rule and 5 knot speed restrictions.• Avoid alcohol, it can impair your decision making as well as increase your risk of hypothermia.

Police are urging drivers to watch their speed and following distances after last week’s change of weather caused havoc for many around Wellington.

Police and emergency services were called to two serious accidents, one in Porirua and the other in Upper Hutt, as a result of wet conditions.

The fi rst accident, involving six cars and a motorbike, happened on February 10 and closed a section of SH1.

The crash was reported to police at about 6:40am and motorists were asked to delay their travel or take alternate routes through Tawa or over Haywards Hill Rd. It was cleared by 7:45am.

While there were no serious injuries, a female who is six months pregnant and

the male motorcyclist were taken to Wel-lington Hospital for medical checks as a precaution.

The cause of the accident is not known at this time however, Porirua Police are investigating.

Last week’s second crash happened on Haywards Hill Road/SH58 at about 7am on February 12.

The accident closed the road for several

hours following the three vehicle crash that left one person dead and two seriously injured.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash.

Sergeant Bradley Allen of Wainuiomata Police wants drivers to take care on the roads at all times, and especially in wet conditions.

This year’s Relay for Life will be fi lled with remembrance for Wainuiomata’s Karen Riwaka – who is taking part as a tribute to family members.

The international walking and running event sees more than four million people participate around the world in celebra-tion of cancer survivors and caregivers, while remembering loved ones lost to the disease.

To fi ght back, participants raise aware-ness and funds to support the New Zealand Cancer Society.

The last thing Ms Riwaka’s sister said to her was ‘please keep the team going’. She

meant the family’s Relay for Life team ‘Left Right Out.’

Seven years later, Ms Riwaka is still braving the track on Wellington’s wa-terfront, remembering her relations and raising funds to fi ght cancer.

“We keep doing relay because the atmosphere is really great,” says Ms Riwaka.

“Of course it’s sad; especially the candle tribute ceremony, but we have lots of fun. I do it for my sister, and for dad and aunty, and many other people. Our family has lost so many people to cancer,” she says.

Ms Riwaka also does the relay for her beloved pug dog, Ming.

Fundraising is a major aspect of Ms

Riwaka’s relay campaign and it encour-ages everyone to get behind her.

“The Cancer Society doesn’t get any money direct from the government.

They are a really worthy cause,” she says.

Ms Riwaka encourages anyone who has been touched by cancer to enter a team.

“Just do it,” she says. “Just get out there and try it. It’s something different.”

“If I don’t my sister will probably come back and haunt me,” she says.

Ms Riwaka is set to compete in Welling-ton’s event which will be held on March 22-23 at Frank Kitts Park.

A new café with an ethos of quality over quantity has opened in Lower Hutt and will serve refreshments sourced from a Wainuiomata business.

Located at the Little Thea-tre and Lower Hutt War Memorial Library, Little secured support from Wai-nuiomata’s Hardie Boys and will serve its gingerbeer – promoting the use of locally-sourced ingredients.

Café manger Frances Speer says while she is keen to run a café with healthier options, there are a few things that cannot be solved without a great piece of cake full of seasonal ingredients.

The new café will serve

up hot and cold beverages and light bites to eat in a modern space fi tted out by award-winning architect Mary Daish.

It is set to serve a chang-ing array of fresh, filled baguettes, delicious salads, cakes and other sweet treats from around the local area.

“I’m also passionate about portion size, which means that at Little there won’t be upsized food items like doorstop wedges of cake, palm-sized pieces of slice or ‘mega-muffi ns’,” Ms Speer says.

Little is open Monday to Friday from 9:30am and on Saturdays from 10am.

Ross Hunia loves his Triumph 2500S and says he will keep it for as long as he can.

The 1978 old gal was purchased by Mr Hunia in 1997 and since then only the necessities have been altered.

“The only things I’ve changed are the electronic ignition, halo-gen headlights and converted the oil fi lter – which was a must. Other than that she’s all original,” he says.

Before the triumph, the Wai-nuiomata resident had a Holden EH sedan, which he says was a nice car but not as good as the 2500S.

The thing Mr Hunia most likes about his current classic is that it was the last model built.

“Also it cost nothing to repair if something goes wrong.”

“I’ve always liked the Triumphs though. A friend convinced me not to get rid of it for a Rover. He said, ‘the triumph is way better than a rover,’ so I stuck with her.”

Mr Hunia’s Triumph was the only model that came on to the

market with magnesium wheels – another feature he likes about the car.

The Wainuiomata resident of six years is currently a member of the Kapiti Mini Club however, has recently submitted his member-ship to the New Zealand British Car Club.

He and his Triumph 2500S are regulars at the Wellington British Car Day and have been going for the past 12 years.

This year Mr Hunia says he was the only one at the show with a 2500S.

“It’s definitely a classic,” he says.

Mr Hunia says his Triumph is defi nitely a road car and not designed to drive around town.

“It’s a bloody nice car. It was the first car I ever went over 100kmh in.”

The local Triumph enthusiast is happy with his choice of car and enjoys taking it out every now and then.

“If you look after the old classics they will last forever.”

By Daniel Whitfi eldHome-town racer Ben Cawthra

had a dismal start to his speedway season this year due to problems under the hood.

Racing in the modified series with his sprint-styled V8 sports car, Ben has faced ceased shock absorbers and having to replace the engine block since October.

“Normally I’m racing every weekend but that just hasn’t hap-pened this season. Problems this

year unfortunately put me out for a number of races,” Ben says.

“It’s quite disappointing,” he says. The modifi ed series Ben races in

involves drivers adhering to restric-tions on the size of the engine and weight of cars. Cars in the series sport fat rear wheels, which chucky tyres designed to aid the drivers racing on dirt.

Despite all the upsets, Ben says it is a fun series to race in.

“The excitement comes from the

close proximity between the wall and other cars,” he says.

Ben says the only bad thing about the sport is spending a day cleaning the car after racing.

He has had two speedway cars, both of which raced three seasons in his six season racing career.

Now preparing his sports car for tuning practice sessions over the winter months, Ben is hopeful next season will by his season.

“I need to get the car sorted.

It’s taken a few years to get the car to a competitive quality. With the amount of time I have had off racing, you lose touch with how the car handles and performs,” Ben says.

“We need to get practicing to see how the changes I’ve made to the car will affect its racing,” he says.

Born and bred in Wainuiomata, however now living in Upper Hutt, Ben got introduced to the sport by a friend who convinced him to go

along to a speedway event.“I’d never been before. I watched

it once and thought, ‘we have to get into this’.”

Prior to racing cars, the Wai-nuiomata petrol-head raced power boats; and was at one stage crowned New Zealand Formula One Power Boat Champion.

He retired from boat racing at the age of 22, even though he managed a top three placing in almost every race.

Disappointing season put local behind

An up and coming softball star from Wainuiomata has shown she has what it takes by securing a spot on the Hutt Valley’s tournament softball team.

Lace Tangianau was picked for the squad following her outing at the Central Region Softball Championships last month where she played as part of an all-girl, under 13 Hutt Valley team.

While the team ended up fi nishing second, Lace showed dedication and support towards the tournament, exercising good sportsman-ship skills picked up over the years.

Lace currently plays for Te Aroha Softball Club but will play under the central region squad banner in a tournament next month.

The 11-year-old joins three other girls from the Hutt Valley area and will grace the fi eld

at the Triangular Tournament at Haitaitai Park on March 2.

She believes it will be a good op-portunity to improve her skills and grow as a player, while competing alongside her Hutt Valley teamates.

It will also provide her with a chance to step up level, she says.

Other Hutt Valley mem-bers include Jasmine Horne, Penny Te Kira and Kimihia Tangi-anau.

Lace began her softball career playing teeball at the age of about four, and really enjoys stepping out onto the diamond to bat.

Big league just around the corner

Wainuiomata’s grade 11 softball team took to the diamond last weekend, taking on rivals Stokes Valley. The home town team recorded a 7-5 victory with help from star player Katie Spicer and coach

Mita Kauri spurring them on with a motivational speech. The team pulled off the victory and will hope to build off the momentum this latest result has provided.

Although the 2014 Colgate Games series is done and dusted for another year, local athletes Rylee and Jorja Watt are deter-mined to continue their sporting successes.

Competing in the South Island games, Rylee picked up fi rst place in the long jump with a whopping 3.51m effort in the year eight event, while sister Jorja made the semi-fi nals of the girls’ 200 metre sprint for grade 10 after qualifying fi fth in her heats.

Unfortunately Jorja fi nished the semi-fi nals in eighth place, which meant she missed out on progress-ing to the next race. Despite this Jorja did record a personal best in the long jump event as well, with a distance of 3.61m.

“It was a good event and was so much fun. I can’t wait for the next games,” Rylee says.

“It was cool competing against athletes from around New Zea-land,” Jorja says.

Residing in Moores Valley, Rylee, 9, and Jorja, 10, say they love running and look forward to the next event with much anticipa-tion.

The pair has also recorded a number of other achievements inside athletics, including Rylee picking up Wellington Athlete of the Year for seven-year-olds last year and Jorja representing Wellington on several occasions.

Rylee and Jorja get their athleti-cism from their dad and granddad. Dad, Gary Watt, was a top athlete in his earlier years while her granddad, Russell Watt, was an All Black winger from 1958-1961.

Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club (LHAAC) chairman Simon England says despite being young, the two athletes are talented with the potential for bigger and better opportunities in the future.

The duo’s club had a successful venture at the 2014 games win-ning 14 medals across the North and South Island events held in January.

Mr England says 12 athletes competed in Whangarei, winning nine individual medals plus a relay medal.

At the South Island games a week later in Timaru, he says LHAAC had seven athletes in action, winning four individual medals.

Reuben Goldingham-Newsom from Waiwhetu came second in the 1500m and third in the 800m events as part of the Grade 12 boys’ competitions.

Rylee is a student at Wainuio-mata Primary School and Jorja goes to St Oran’s College in Lower Hutt.

The athletic pair is now busy training for the Wellington cham-pionships in March.

Next year’s South Island games will be held in Dunedin on Janu-ary 16-18, while the North Island event hosted in Wellington will run from January 9-11.

Rylee has the goal of one day representing New Zealand in athletics.

Students from Wainuiomata Primary School were practicing their swim-ming skills last week as part of their term one programme.

Senior syndicate teacher Martin Cooper was conducting lessons which included freestyle, backstroke and treading water at Wainuiomata Sum-mer Pool.

Mr Cooper says over two rotations, the school comes down to the pool to learn how to swim properly.

Wainuiomata Primary School Mi-chael Herbert was one of the stars of the day, catching on quickly, listening to instructions and perfecting his stroke.

Mr Cooper tells the Wainuiomata News in total 125 students will take part in lessons at the Moohan St complex.

The men of Wainuiomata Bowling Club took to the greens last Wednesday as part of the men’s pennants competi-tion.

Local players were up against Naenae’s Park Avenue Bowling Club.

The tournament boasted some en-tertaining games as well as a chance to socialise with the other players. Another round of the men’s pennants tournament will be held Wednesday.

After a day’s worth of games, the skill level of players involved meant the scores were relatively equal in the fi nish.

Two out of three games were won by Wainuiomata.

Clubs compete in the weekly tour-nament alongside others around the Wellington region on Wednesdays for male players.

Students swim to success

Wainuiomata’s Alister McI-ntyre, and his doubles partner Tania Martin, were unstoppable over the weekend as they took on local pairs for club glory.

The local pair took top spot in the annual Mixed Doubles Competition hosted by Wai-

nuiomata Tennis Club on Sun-day after games were delayed a week due to bad weather.

Alistar and Tania were among several other pairs taking part in the mixed doubles and will look to retain their titles this Sunday.
