BATTER UP: Joel Evans has been selected for the New Zealand Black Sox World series team travelling to Canada in June.

Page 2: Wainuiomata News 24-03-15

Continued from page 2Joel says that it is awesome being in the

team and that his game improves a lot while he is with the team.

“Mark Sorenson, the coach is great, he has knowledge on everything, he has won everything,” Joel says.

The second baseman has put a lot of work to get to this level, including travel-ling over to the United States to play over there.

“While I was over there I got into cross fi t, and I lost around 16 or 17kg doing that,” he says.

The extra fi tness helped Joel as he got se-lected for the national team in December for the Oceania qualifying series.

“There was a lot of sacrifi ce, but it is all worth it when you put the jersey on,” Joel says.

“I am really proud of the sport and the team, there has been a lot of people that

have won world series while wearing the jersey.”

Even with the success of the national team, Softball is still consid-ered a minor sport in the country, there is no professional league in New Zealand, and every player has a day job.

Joel installs kitchens, but says his boss is great with him going away for softball as he also plays the sport.

Joel started playing softball when he was four years old, and the 24 year old says he wants to play for as long as he can.

“I will probably start coaching once I stop playing, you give back to the sport when you do that,” he says.

READY TO SWING: Joel Evans can’t wait for the world series.

By Aaron Meredith

The fi rst ever Wainuiomata Childrens day went well, even though it was raining all day outside.

Councillor Margaret Wil-lard was one of the organisers and was happy with how the day went.

“It was too wet for outdoor games, but several families turned up and played some board games,” she says.

All the families had a blast with the indoor games, learn-

ing new games and having fun celebrating being a child.

The day was intended so that children could get out and have some fun, and maybe even learn what it was like for their parents and grandparents growing up.

Photos of people in their childhood were on display, some showing what games were played in past decades.

Childrens Day was created so that every child can be celebrated, and so they can celebrate being a child as

well.Hundreds of events took

place all over the country in March, some events were huge and some were tiny.

The event came to fruition after Councillor Willard found out that there was noth-ing planned this year, so she wanted to change that.

This year’s event went so well, the organisers are plan-ning to have more days when board games are available for the children to come down and play.

There will be something strange in Wainuiomata this weekend as the movie ghostbusters is set to be shown on Queen St Reserve.

The originally planned showing of the movie was cancelled due to high winds, but this 7.30pm on Saturday the show is guaranteed to take place.

This is a free showing of the 1980’s classic movie, if it is raining it will be moved inside the War Memorial Hall.

Dogs are not allowed but any ghosts oating round the valley are more then welcome.

Wainuiomata’s best neigh-bours were rewarded last night, celebrating those who went beyond and above for their neighbours.

This year there were 43 nominations all up, and organiser Dawn McKinley says that they were all great.

“If I had 43 awards I would have given one to every-one, they were all fantastic nominations,” she says.

Normally there would only be one award given out. But because of the caliber of the nominations this year, two awards were

given out on the night. The fi rst was given out to

Eddy Bristow from Petrie Street, who visited a sick neighbour in hospital, and has been helping in getting his medications and meals since being bought home.

Eddy was a bit too shy to come down to receive his award so a member of the Petrie St neighbourhood support group accepted on his behalf.

The supreme award this year was given to Heather and Les Hill from Stanley St.

The couple were nomi-nated last year and only

just failed to win the award then. The list of why the Hills won the award was long, and it was easy to see why the title was given to them.

From helping out with looking after neighbours children, helping out with car repairs, shared baking and even mowing their neighbours front burm.

They even repaired an elderly neighbours letter box that was damaged after a car had crashed into it.

Les says that he is proud of where he lives, and that it is a great community down there.

“We don’t live in each other’s back yards but we are always there for each other,” he says.

Mayor Ray Wa l lace presented the awards and says he was not surprised that there was two awards handed out on the night.

“What people do for each other cannot be underes-timated, and everything these neighbours have done is highly commended,” he says.

“It really is all about neighbourhood support, when the big one hits it will be our neighbours and family that will help us.”

MultiFest: Race Unity Day

Wednesday March 25, 2015

By Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata residents had their day made happier thanks to the happy chemist, Clive Cannons.

Clive and his team “stumbled across” the day on the internet, and decided that it suited them well.

“We are the happy chemist,” says Clive.

International Happiness Day comes from the country of Bhu-tan, where they measured how happy their citizens were.

It then spread right around the world, where it is celebrated on March 20, and all 193 United Na-tions members have celebrations.

Clive had his pharmacy set up with balloons and everyone was dressed up with smiles on their dials.

They also had a “fun raiser” where they were helping raise funds for Ataahua Journey and her family.

The team was also giving away happy cupcakes as a bit of an incentive to get a smile out of their customers.

“There is a saying that a merry heart is like a medicine, it’s all about making people leave here with a smile,” Clive says.

The team has enjoyed the day so much that they are planning to do the celebration next year as well.

“It is going to be bigger and better next year,” Clive says.

Happiness spread through valley

There will be two Anzac services in Wainuiomata on Anzac Day.

The Dawn service will take place at 6am, at the Wainuiomata War Memo-rial Community Hall.

The Anzac Parade will take place at 10.50am followed by a second service at 11.00am.

This will also be held at the Wainuio-mata War Memorial Community Hall.

Everyone is encouraged to come down to at least one of these services and pay respect to those that gave their life for their country.

Easter Scavenger Hunt

The Hutt City I-site is running an Easter Egg Scavenger hunt on Satur-day April 4.

The Dowse Square will be trans-formed into a family playground, with a bouncy castle, a petting zoo and a magician will be at the event.

The day will run from 10.30am and will run to 1.30pm.

A prize will be available for the top people that complete the scavenger hunt, including a return pass on the Interislander for fi rst place.

The camera on top of the Wainuiomata Hill, seemed to be replaced in the morning, but by the afternoon it was clear someone was just having fun.

A box was placed in the exact position that the speed camera was originally, painted in the same colour and designed to look like an old camera.

They used an orange painted circle to make it seem there was a light on, and a toilet roll for what appeared to be the

camera lens. This camera caught out a lot of people,

who braked suddenly at the sight of what appeared to be a replacement camera.

By the afternoon the fake camera was gone and the original stand was empty again.

This stand has been the target of multiple practical jokes even since the original camera on top of the hill was taken down.

Multiple cones were placed on the stand, with the cones staying up there for many weeks on end.

Speed camera comes, and then goes

The team at Wainuiomata ANZ got behind the cause of raising money for Mila Gar-diner and her family this week.

The team held a fundraiser to help raise money for the family who are trying to get Mila over to the Unites States to have surgery that will help Mila with her cerebral palsy.

Mila suffers from spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, which means her body stiffens up every time she gets emo-tional or excited.

Tim Wilson from ANZ says that it was a great cause and that they were happy to get behind it.

“It was one of our staff mem-bers idea, and it goes along with the banks idea of paint New Zealand Blue,” he says.

“That is when every branch gets behind a community event.”

Tim says he wanted to raise about $1000 between all the banks in the Hutt, the two branches over in Lower Hutt are running fundraisers this Friday.

“So far we have managed to raise $450 and with the two Hutt branches running a BBQ this Friday we are hoping to get to the $1000 mark,” he says.

“This is what the community is all about, it has been an awe-some response,” he says.

Mila and her mum Mela-nie popped down for a visit during the day, and Melanie says that it is amazing to see.

“It is really uplifting, we

have gotten so much sup-port, it has done a lot for our moral,” she says.

Currently the family has raised over $50,000 of the $100,000 needed for the

surgery, and Mel says that it is incredible to see.

“I never thought I would see that happen so quickly, it’s great to see people gen-erosity.”

If anyone wants to donate, there is a give a little page www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/pleasehelpmila, which also shows how much money has been raised. There is also a facebook page, Auctions for Mila, which is giving updates on fundraisers and has items for sale to raise money.

Wellington needs 566 new plasma donors by the end of the year in order to keep up with the constant demand for plasma and plasma-derived products, says the New Zealand Blood Service.

A campaign, ‘Hearts of Gold’ was launched last week to en-courage residents to donate

plasma.Asuka Burge, national manager

marketing and communications for New Zealand Blood Service says healthcare services in Wel-lington need on average 135 unites of plasma each week, and there is no other substitute for it

Plasma, nicknamed ‘liquid

gold’, is the gold-coloured liquid in blood that carries blood cells around the body, and is made up of water, proteins and clotting factors.

“Donating plasma is easy and effi cient, and can make the world of difference to the person need-ing it. NZBS collects plasma

through an apheresis machine, which is able to separate the blood, store the plasma and return the red cells and platelets to the donor through one small needle in the arm,” says Asuka.

“Plasma donors feel great after a donation even though it takes a little longer than a whole blood

donation. Because the red cells are returned to the donor it also means they can donate more fre-quently than whole blood donors, who are limited to a three-month wait between donations.”

The Wainuiomata Community Patrol is out and about when most of us are tucked up in bed asleep.

Most nights during the week, there is a car driving around Wainuiomata, watching over shops that are closing, and checking all those dark alleys that trouble seems to hide down.

Essentially they are an extra pair of eyes for the police, and they need all the help they can to keep going.

Patrol member Paul Knox says that there are many running costs on the patrol.

“We have petrol and also keeping the car main-tained,” he says.

The patrol relies on donations to keep running, recently they were given a donation by the Pencar-row Lions that will help out with both petrol and other running costs.

The patrol not only looks after Wainuiomata, with Seaview also added to the team’s area.

“We were asked to cover Seaview last year as well, it has just expanded the area we cover really,” Paul says.

The patrol is in constant communication with other patrols around the area as well as the police, if they see any trouble help is not far away.

The patrol is always looking for volunteers and donations, both will help the patrol continue on and help keep the community trouble free.

Those that do patrol are usually people with families and jobs, they do this so that they can give back to the community. If anyone is wanting to join the patrol they can nd out more information on cpnz.co.nz.

Some people do not have the confi dence to succeed in getting their dream job, or cannot talk in front of people.

That is why so many have joined the Wai-nuiomata Toastmasters, and their numbers have continued to grow.

The club was set up by Neville and Diane Isherwood, and is always welcoming new people and guests into their ranks.

Toastmasters is an international pro-gramme that was intended to help people improve their self-confi dence, and speaking skills.

A normal club night begins with Table Topics, where guests and regulars are given a topic to talk about with no time to plan.

“This is the hardest speech every fi rst timer will do, their fi rst table topic speech,” says Neville.

After that there are a series of other speeches delivered, so people can progress in the course.

“Every time you do a speech it is meant to help you gain more and more confi dence, and more and more skills at the same time,” Diane says

After all the speeches then everyone is evaluated, with feedback given to people so they can improve on their public speaking and gain more confi dence in themselves.

The amount of people heading into the Happiness Inn every Monday and Wednesday has forced the organisers to try and raise more money to open another day, but they don’t mind.

Claire and Olivia Stonyer are running a sausage sizzle every second Thursday in order to raise enough funds to open another night.

The extra evening is only the begin-ning, with a takeaway service also in the pipeline so that people can take the food to those who need it.

“Some people cannot get down to the kitchen, so they need someone to come pick it up for them,” says Olivia.

The Inn is situated at Life City Church at the bottom of the Wai-nuiomata Hill, and is open between 5pm and 6.45pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

The project came from when Olivia studied to see how children were get-ting fed.

“I looked at fi ve state schools and found that four of them were getting help from Kids Can,” She says.

“People don’t know what some go

through to feed their children.”The project is entirely self- funded so

the mother daughter has been paying for everything themselves.

“Everything has been coming out of our own pockets, so if anyone wants to help fund or donate it would be appreciated,” says Claire.

Since the kitchen opened in January, there is generally about 20-35 people that come every time that the Inn is open.

“It has been good, we see the same people every night, which is what we are there for,” says Claire.

The Wainuiomata and Lower Hutt Redcoats were out in force on Friday, raising money for The Child Cancer Foundation.

The Child Cancer founda-tion raises money for chil-dren that are suffering with cancer, helping the child and their family go through the hard time.

They aim to reduce isolation and the impact of cancer through offering support services.

They also inform the child and their families of every step that they will take in the journey.

One person who donated,

Michael Heel says that it is a great cause and he was happy to donate some lose change to the cause.

“I had a few coins float-ing round in my pocket for weeks, so I gave my money to these guys, it’s a great cause,” he says.

“I don’t know what is would be like for my children not to have what they need in life, or to be unwell and me not be able to afford to help.”

The Wainuiomata Redcoats were out on Queen Street all day gathering donations from all the public that passed by.

In total between both Wai-nuiomata and Lower Hutt raised $3500, something that they were really happy about.

Wood Hatton Playcentre was given an upgrade of sorts this week, thanks to the team from the Featherston Street ANZ.

Eight workers from the bank went to the centre on Friday, to do painting and cleaning as part of the banks volunteer work scheme.

Included in the work was some painting on the playhouse and fence, changed all the lights to eco bulbs and tidied the centres carpentry area.

Centre manager Hannah Mitchell

says it was great that they came and all the work they did was incredible.

“The Playhouse transformation is amazing and we can't wait for the children to see it when they return to centre on Tuesday,” she says.

The event was organised by Vol-unteer Wellington and is something ANZ regularly take part in sending workers to help out non-profi t or-ganisations throughout the country.

Hannah says that the work was great so they could get some extra work done around the centre.

“Our fence mural is an ongoing

project with mountains, sky, rivers and five little ducks featuring so far” she says

“We now have sky and hills all around the inside of the fence ready to add the detail.”

The centre now has the goal of fi nishing painting the fence and the fort inside the grounds as well.

“Along with a recent grants from The Hutt Mana Trust and The Infi nity Foundation for outdoor play equipment our outdoor upgrade is coming along wonderfully,” Hannah says.

Easter Church Services 2015Easter Sunday is celebrated all

around the world with hot cross buns and chocolate easter eggs, with many going looking for eggs left by an Easter Bunny. However on Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Christians believe, according to the Bible, that Jesus was raised from the dead three days after his death on the cross. The death of Jesus Christ is remembered on Good Friday; the Friday just before Easter. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the price for our sin so that all who believe in him may have a relationship with God through Jesus, and eternal life with Him.

Next week the Wainuiomata Community Board will be having their second meeting of the year.

This meeting is scheduled to take place on April 1 at 7pm, and is a public meeting so everyone can turn up and see what is hap-pening in the community.

There is also time set aside for public to speak on issues in the community, so that they can have their opinion listened to and considered in future projects in the area.

In the past few meetings, amalgamation has been a big issue, and is sure to be debated once again this time around.

Everyone is encouraged to come along, even if you’re not going to speak, it is a good idea to come along and see what will affect you and your community.

Community Board Meeting coming up

The Lower Hutt Anzac Lawn and Cenotaph area will be opened just before Anzac Day.

On Sunday April 19 at 2pm, the Hutt City Council and Lower Hutt RSA will open the lawn and rededicate the cenotaph.

This is taking place on the An-zac Lawn at Riddiford Gardens in Lower Hutt and everyone is invited.

Construction has been taking place since early January, and workers have been going at it to fi nish in time for Anzac Day.

The redeveloped Anzac Lawn and Cenotaph area will create a public space of significance in honour of the sacrifi ce of our service men and women.

It will continue to serve as a centrepiece for civic remembrance ceremonies, and as a permanent acknowledgement of our history.

The attractive design and func-tionality will better accommodate day-to-day recreational activities, and improve the connectedness to the library, café and gardens.

This year see’s the 100th an-niversary of Gallipoli where many New Zealand and Australian Lives were lost.

Celebrations will be held all around the country, including in Wainuiomata, where there will be the normal Dawn Service and Anzac Parade. For more information please contact the Hutt City Council.

Hutt Valley Police have identi-fi ed three males involved in the “train surfi ng” incident on Sunday, March 8, 2015.

Constable Sarah Ferguson of the Hutt Valley Tactical Crime Unit says it was a pleasing result the males were identifi ed so quickly.

The three Hutt Valley teenagers have been referred through to Youth Aid for follow-up.

“Hutt Valley Police take such extreme recklessness in personal safety very seriously, and are com-mitted in working with KiwiRail and the community to prevent similar situations. The very nature of railways means that a lapse in judgement, or simply caving into peer pressure, can have severe consequences and the Railways Act 2005 has clear guidelines regarding the required behaviour from individuals.”

KiwiRail Metro General Manag-er, David Shepherd says, “Thanks to the combined efforts of NZ Police and KiwiRail the offending youths have been apprehended and we will look to liaise with Youth Aid on appropriate reparation. KiwiRail takes incidents like these very seriously and has robust systems in place to help us identify trespassers and follow up with police to then prosecute within the full extent of the law.

These youths are lucky to be alive after pulling such a danger-ous stunt”.

Manager of TrackSAFE NZ

Megan Drayton says trespassing on the rail corridor is the leading cause of public railway fatalities in New Zealand and around the world, and it is fortunate that this incident didn’t result in further deaths.

“It’s timely to remind people that the only legal place they are allowed on the railway is at a designated level crossing. Trains, particularly the electric ones in Auckland and Wellington, are deceptively quiet and so we urge people to only cross at level crossings, where protections such as signs or signals are in place to keep them safe.”

Constable Ferguson acknowl-edged that social media played a key role in identifying the three suspects.

“The information received from the public was invaluable with helping Police identify the offend-ers. It’s a great example of the value that the local community can provide to assist Police with keeping their neighbourhood safe. Social Media can be an invaluable tool to assist Police with identifying and locating offenders; however it does also run the risk of encouraging copycat offending.

Police will take any further incidents seriously. Police welcome anyone with information on a crime to contact the Hutt Valley Police on 560 2600 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Wainuiomata has the option of two members of parliament to help them out during the week now Chris Bishop is holding sessions on Mondays

The National list MP comes over to Wainuiomata twice a month to get to know people in Wainuiomata and hear any problems they may have.

“I am trying to keep a promise that I made during the election, to keep a presence over here in Wainuiomata,” he says.

Chris has an offi ce on Bloomfi eld Terrace in the Hutt but wanted to be-come more available in Wainuiomata.

“I call them catch up with Chris sessions,” he says.

These sessions are always in one of the meeting rooms in the Wai-nuiomata Library, and usually are between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

“All the times are on my website if people want to know when I am here,” Chris says.

The MP is in parliament form Tuesday to Thursday every week so Chris is only available on Mondays to see people in the area.

“People can also make a booking to see me if they want to in my Lower Hutt offi ce.”

Chris says that having two MP’s in the area is only a good thing, as both are wanting to see the best for the Hutt South area.

Both got into politics for the same reason, to help out their community.

Sports with Aaron Meredith

No matter what the result is of this world cup, the Black Caps have won over this country like very few sports teams can.

New Zealand is in full cricket mode, even though Rugby Season is well under way, All the nation is talking about is Cricket.

Names like Martin Guptill will forever be known in this country for what he has achieved in this cup.

Yes he started off badly, but an argument must be made that he was timing his run, scoring 237 in a knock out game is proof of that.

The Black Caps are not supposed to win the World Cup, unlike the All Blacks who are supposed to win theirs.

In terms of cricketing superpowers, we pale in comparison to the likes of Australia, India, and even though their results in this tournament say otherwise, England.

But this has not stopped the Black Caps set-ting the tournament alight, capacity crowds at both Eden Park and Westpac Stadium show that.

When was the last time we saw one of those stadiums full for anything but an All Blacks game, never, not even the Kiwi’s last year managed that in the four nations fi nal.

Yes the Cricket World Cup never quite captured the public’s imagination like the Rugby World Cup did 20 years ago, but being over two countries it never would.

No one can doubt that cricket has never been more popular though, we truly believe that we can win this World Cup, we have the skill, and we have the determination.

But no matter what the result, our cricketers have done something that not many cricket teams have done before them.

They have made us truly proud of them, and we should be proud of them, they have given us a lot of reasons to be, Martin Guptill alone gave us 237 of them just on Saturday.

Win or lose, the Black Caps have won the countries heart

The New Zealand Marching Championships were held at Horncastle Arena in Christch-urch from March 12 to 14.

Wellington was admirably represented by six teams over four grades.

These teams also included people from Wainuiomata.

Bandolier were entered in the Masters grade, Dash, In-spire and Storm in the Senior grade and Glennette teams in both the Under 12 and Under 16 grades.

The championships opened

on Thursday night with the Gala march, which is for Senior Grade teams only.

This involves each team putting together a short rou-tine which is judged for its entertainment value.

Each team also adopts a stage name and this year was won by Decoded also known as Storm from Wellington.

Friday saw the teams quali-fying for either the plate march or the championship march.

Inspire, a new team based in

Porirua, qualifi ed for the plate march, while the remaining teams all competed in the Championship March.

Marching on Saturday saw the arena fi lled with support-ers from around the country, all keen to cheer their teams to success. Results for Wel-lington were very pleasing – Storm are the NZ Champion Senior team, with Dash the third NZ Champion team.

The Under 16 grade saw Glennette taking home the NZ Champion Under 16 team.

Glennette Under 12 were placed second NZ Champion Under 12 team, and Bandolier second Champion team in the Masters grade.

This was a very successful weekend for all Wellington teams.

If you wish to find out about marching in your area, please contact Marching Wellington via our website www.sportsground.co.nz/marchingwellington, or [email protected]

Wainuiomata once again played host to the Hutt Valley Disabled Resources Trust TriAblity Triathlon over the weekend, and it went off brilliantly.

The TriAthlon was one of the few in the world that puts able bodied competitors against disabled competitors in the same race.

People from all over Wainuiomata competed including a team from Wai-nuiomata High School, a team involving Mayor Ray Wallace.

Also councillor Campbell Barry competed in a solo race.

The finishing line was packed all day, with people encouraging the competitors to fi nish the race.

Also there were no acci-dents reported on track, with

riders and runners being on the road, the traffi c was very kind and courteous towards all the competitors.

There were two distances available for competitors the Coast length which included a 700m swin, a 20km cycle and a 5km run.

The Valley length included a 300m swin, a 11km bike and a 2.5km run.

The swimming was done at the Wainuiomata pools, followed by the bike course which took them down Moores Valley Road.

The run then took them down Moohan St, then back to Barrs Reserve for the fi nish.

Organisers say the race was such a great success that they are wanting the event to take a place next year.

So get training and keep a look out for when the dates are announced.

The Wainuiomata Premiers started off the Swindale Shield off with a draw, although the team should really have won comfortably.

The game was one of many that was played at Trentham Memorial Park in what was Wel-lington Club Rugby’s Gala Day.

Wainuiomata was up against

Northern United and started off the game with a hiss and a roar in a dominating fi rst half display.

An opening penalty to Tyler Tane was followed by a brilliant try to new winger Hokianga Morunga, who regathered his own chip kick to score in the corner.

This was then followed by another penalty to Tane before

he scored a try after a well worked move.

He scored another try and an-other penalty before the break, giving Wainuiomata a 25-0 lead at the break.

In the second half however was when the game changed, Northern United started string-ing their attacks together and started scoring points.

Before the large contingent

of supporters of both teams realised, Norths were right back in the game, and even lead just before full time.

Wainuiomata was saved how-ever thanks to Tane’s accurate kicking in the second half, he kicked over a penalty at the end of the game to salvage a draw.

The result leaves Wainuiomata sitting in ninth place, but the team would be disappointed

with the result after such a positive start.

Things were much better for the Premier Reserves however, with the 27-17 victory making the coach happy.

Next week both teams are play-ing at Mary Crowther Park up against Paremata-Plimmerton.

The Reserves are fi rst up at 12.45pm followed by the Pre-miers at 2.30pm.

Draw disappointing after promising start

The Wainuiomata Rugby league Club is looking for local busi-nesses to sponsor their players.

People can sponsor a premier player, which will provide them with a framed squad picture, weekly updates on how the team is doing as well as updates on their own player.

Kylee Matenga is at the fore front of the proposal and says that it is key to attract a younger generation into their club.

“We are recognised at both a national and international level for our ability to develop and produce world class players on the stages of the NRL and UK Superleague,” she says.

“For a small club, this is a refl ec-tion on our determination and passion for the game of grassroots rugby league.”

Wainuiomata has produced some great players over the years including Tana Umaga, Piri Wee-
