Wainuiomata is remembering the 100 year anniversary of Gallipoli through a major revamp project.

Along with the driveway off Queen St being renamed to Anzac Way, the War Memorial Community Hall is getting a facelift.

Mayor Ray Wallace says that the upgrades are moving along nicely and looking really good.

“We are on schedule, and it should be all ready for the celebrations,” he says.

Included in the renovations is new carpet, new non-slip vinyl, a new sign and new etching on all the windows.

There will also be hot water throughout the building – this was a problem before-hand as the toilets did not have hot water.

“The upgrade was planned but was some way out,” Mayor Wallace says.

Workers on the site are from the Hutt Valley, including a couple from Wai-nuiomata.

“It is great that everyone is Hutt Valley based and the project is supporting local businesses,” Mayor Wallace says.

Bart Bartlett from the Wainuiomata Valley RSA says the upgrade is brilliant.

“It will be good to see it when it is fi nished,” he says.

Job foreman John Brien reiterated the others saying that the job is running well.

“It is going really well, there is not too much more to go,” he says.

The project has continued on from the work that has been done adding names to the cenotaph that were missing.

This is also the site where Wainuiomata holds its annual Anzac parade, where there is usually a large contingent of locals that watch the parade and ceremony.

With this year being the 100th anniver-sary of Gallipoli, organisers are hoping that there is a even larger crowd than normal.

A cost blowout of the estima-tion that the Local Govern-ment Commission predicted for amalgamation has the council seething.

The correction shows the cost has risen by over $30 million dollars from what was previously estimated.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wal-lace says that this shows a lack of precision in the proposal.

“It’s further proof that this is a high-risk, high-cost, ‘think-big’ gamble,” he says.

The Commission’s estimated cost of amalgamation of the nine councils of the Wel-

lington and Wairarapa regions down to one has increased from $184million to $210 million, over four to fi ve years.

The Commission said in its statement that the revised

cost is due to the estimates for integrating all council IT systems and infrastructure.

“The Commission has pre-viously been advised there

are signifi cant challenges to accurately estimating council IT costs,” the commission statement says.

“To have them admit how diffi cult it is to estimate costs

is alarming,” says Mayor Wallace.

“We’ve seen Auckland’s IT budget blow out, originally budgeted for $70m and com-

pleted June 2016 and the latest estimate is $140-$170m cost and 12 months late.”

Hands off the Hutt Co-Leader says that the LGC was advised of the potential of a budget blowout.

“The reality is they’ve added an extra $16 million to the bill for something no one wants, It also means the payback period would increase by another year to nine years,” he says.

“The $210 million is still a best-case fi gure and doesn't include interest costs or con-tingency. We’d bank on a fi gure of $300 million being much closer to the mark.”

The Wainuiomata Pacific Education Success Initiative is starting its learning and nu-meracy mentoring programme for the year again.

There is a second consultation night next Tuesday night at the Wainuiomata Library which is aimed to help people with their

member, mentor and educator says the program is there to help the pacifi c community succeed in education.

“You don’t have to be a Pa-cifi c Islander though, we just do things in a pacifi c way,” he says.

He says it is great that the group gets to use the library.

“There are all these resources at the library, it is a great place to be,” he says.

The consultation nights are designed to help WaiPESI to help shape the 2015 program, to make sure it is successful.

The night begins at 6pm and everyone is welcome to attend.

Mentor programme about to begin

Team building, leadership skills, and learning to cook on a campfi re are just a few things that year nine students from

Wainuiomata High School will be learning next week.

Just under 140 students will be attending the fourth an-nual ASPIRE camp – one week spent in the Rimutaka Forest

Park and the Brookfi eld Scout Camp to create friendships, develop leadership, and chal-lenge yourself.

McGuinness, says the boys and girls are separated for the week and alternate their locations, with 30 senior peer mentors attending the camp as leaders.

“The girls start at the Ri-mutaka Forest Park, and the boys start at the Scout camp. The girls will spend one night tenting, then will tramp into the bush and cook dinner on open fi res,” Kath says.

“The students learn how to work with the people who will be in their classes for the next fi ve years.”

Kath says that this is also some students’ fi rst time away from home, and that it is a good way for youth to learn what resources are in Wainuiomata.

“Last year I had students com-ing to me during the holidays asking where they could bor-row a tent – they wanted to go camping.”

Kath says the camp also works to benefi t the peer mentors and build their leadership skills.

The camp is part of the AS-PIRE programme that runs every Wednesday in the school, run by the peer mentors.

Fourteen staff members also attend the camp, in an effort to build rapport with the students they will be working with.

The camp is set to run from February 23 -27.

Gallery celebrates � rst birthday

Alfred Memelink Gallery are celebrating their first birthday with an exhibition this week, featuring works from local artists who have supported the gallery throughout the � rst year.

Hutt City Council’s Crea-tive Communities Funding Scheme has money available for groups and individuals running arts projects in the Hutt Valley. The funding team is also running two workshops to help people present strong applications.Pippa Sanderson, Com-munity Arts Advisor says: “We’re looking for art pro-jects with broad commu-nity involvement, projects involving young people, or projects that support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communi-

Workshops to help with the application process will be at Lower Hutt’s War Me-morial Library on Tuesday, March 3 at 10.30am and 5.30pm, and are just under two hours long.

Wainuiomata Anglicans will have an upgraded church build-ing to look forward to in the next few months.

The ground was blessed and the fi rst hole is set to be dug on Sun-day, getting ready for the upgrade that is about to take place.

The 60 year old building situ-ated on Wainuiomata Road has been holding church services since it opened as well as other

services throughout the week.Additions will include a new

entrance foyer, disabled toilets and a new kitchen.

Also other activities within the building will be relocated.

Church member Ian Smyth says the improved facilities will make it easier for their congregation.

“It also helps our friendship club that meets here on Fridays fortnightly,” he says.

“Our goal is to increase our churches involvement in our

community.”The planning and consent

process has taken four years to complete, and plans include some earthquake strengthening work to comply with council regulations.

The park has been abuzz follow-ing the fi ne weather we have had over the last couple of months.

More people are coming through than usual; they’ve been out cycling, walking, running and swimming. It’s been great seeing people enjoying the park.

But with the increasing number of people has come a rising number of unwelcome incidents.

Rubbish has been left around swimming holes with much of it ending up in the river; broken glass and nappies lying around the river banks has made them dangerous.

Please remember if you bring it in you take it out, and let’s keep our swimming holes clean and safe to use.

Cars have been entering the Rec Area past the main gate, which is not allowed and a hazard to other park users.

If you drive past the main gate you run the risk of having your car locked in or towed.

Motor bikes are strictly not allowed, and this includes the smaller Pitt bikes.

I have had to talk with a few people about this, and further action will be taken if you offend.

We have also had signs vandal-ised and barriers removed and drunken behaviour in the car park area.

Besides being the name of a very good beer made by the Garage Project brewery in Wellington, a pernicious weed is one that causes harm to other plants. The very attractive Yellow Horned Poppy (Glaucium fl avum) certainly meets this criterion at Baring Head, and indeed at many other coastal sites throughout New Zealand. This garden escapee is a prolifi c self-seeder and can quickly overwhelm our native rare coastal ecosystems, such as coastal turfs and cushion fi elds.

While other important weed species, such as boxthorn and tree lupin, can be relatively easily dealt with by spraying, albeit at some expense, horned poppy is best controlled by hand, either by pulling or grabbing them out.

This is why, while most of you have been enjoying the balmy summer weather, bands of volunteers, organised by the Friends of Baring Head, have been out,

tackling the dense stands of Horned Poppy at Baring Head. Over the past two summers, we’ve cleared much of the beach along Fitzroy Bay and made signifi cant inroads along the southern beach between the river and the boulders. Because the seed is now setting, we’ve spent the past few weeks removing sev-eral cubic metres of seedheads to prevent further infestations. We can then remove the plants themselves at our leisure over the rest of the year.

Because the seed itself doesn’t remain viable for long, we are confi dent we can get on top of this particular pernicious weed. The work itself is quite light and enjoyable.

Dear Ed, Growing up in Wainuiomata, each summer we would swim in the many beautiful pristine clear riv-ers and waterholes without consequence.

Occasionally some bright-green algae would be fl oat-ing around but this type is harmless yet slippery.

Less than 10 years later,

every spring, questionable dark algae fl oats in the river, before it is confi rmed toxic algae (blue-green algae or thick dark-brown/black algal mats) and the signs fi nally go up.

This algae can kill dogs very quickly if consumed, and can make humans very ill.

We are aware that too much nitrogen and phos-phorous causes algal blooms and damage to delicate ecosystems.

But what is being done about the toxic algae? How is this acceptable? What has gone so wrong? And what can we do!?

If we have pride for our

beautiful Wainuiomata Val-ley, we can all be Kaitiaki of our water.

River toxicity not safe

Petone’s new art gallery, Artspace Gallery, will be hosting a memorial exhibition of one of New Zealand’s most respected bush and mountain artists, John Rundle.

Over 50 of John’s masterpieces will be on show and for sale, and although most were inspired by his beloved bush and mountains, there will also be paintings of Wellington cityscapes, other land-scapes, birds, cats and one of his dog.

John’s wife, Annette, says John started painting in the 1950s and continued right through to his last works which he started in 2013.

Annette says John’s love of tramp-ing and mountaineering gave him the inspiration to initially photograph and then paint the magnifi cent scenery he encountered on his many adventures.

Initially, John borrowed his brother’s camera to take on his trips, which then led to a career as professional photogra-pher. He soon developed the urge to paint the beauty that he encountered.

In 1977 John took the plunge and decided to become a full time artist and painted steadily from his studio under-neath his home at the top of Korokoro. John also gave back to the community – as well as a respected volunteer in local art groups, he became a life member of

the Hutt Valley Tramping club for his services.

He was also a member of the New Zealand Alpine Club and had been a Mountain Safety Council instructor for over 40 years.

The Artspace Gallery will celebrate his life and work from Saturday, February 28 until Sunday, March 29.

A recent programme which aims to get Wainuiomata youth ready for employment or fur-ther study and training is up and running.

The monthly peer support sessions are free to any youth signed up for the Mayor’s Task-force for Jobs, a programme which helps young people into meaningful jobs, training, or employment.

Programme manager Marcia Skinnon says the programmes have been a great way for Wai-nuiomata’s young people to get to know and support one other.

“As well as socialising we often have guest speakers from various industries to interact and talk on a range of topics related to community and career pathways.”

She says more than 100 Wai-

nuiomata youth are registered with The Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs, having self-nominated themselves for help with jobs, training or study.

There have been 71 place-ments in total. Ten people have gone into further education, seven are now training or on work experience and 54 are in part-time and full-time em-ployment across Lower Hutt.

Other courses being run by The Taskforce include gaining a Learners Licence, Toastmas-ter’s courses helping young people learn about speak-ing styles and interpersonal communication, as well as personal grooming – a fun and interactive course getting people work-ready through appropriate dress and style lessons.

Programme sets up youth for future

Wainuiomata High School is holding an NCEA information evening this Thursday.

The evening is aimed to help students and parents get prepared for what is involved in passing NCEA, with advice given to both the student and parents.

There will also be a speaker attending the nights explaining what NCEA is about, giving his expertise on the subject.

More than 400 people have signed up this year’s family-friendly Bike the Trail event along the Hutt River Trail.

Set for March 1, the entire course is fl at and away from roads, making it an easy ride and a great way for families to bike together.

Bike the Trail is not timed, and groups of 50 people set off at a time to make sure there is enough room for cyclists.

There are two riding options, a full ride from Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt to Hikoikoi Reserve in Petone which is

25km, and a shorter 15km ride which starts at County Lane in Silverstream and ends in the same place.

A gold coin donation bar-beque will feed hungry riders afterwards and support local community groups.

Bike and people transport is provided free back to the start line.

Although it’s free to attend the event, people must register at www.bikethetrail.co.nz to ensure medical information and contact details for family members are on fi le. You can also register on the day.

A team from the Hutt Valley including many from Wainuiomata has attended a recent Maori Basketball tournament in Rotorua.

The team travelled up to Rotorua and competed against teams from all around the country and all the members enjoyed the experience.

Destiny Patea was part of the group that travelled up to the tournament and she said she had a great time.

“It smelled pretty bad but when you were playing you couldn’t smell it at all,” she says.

The tournament was run over three days in early Febru-ary and had grades including wheel chair basketball and Special Olympics grade.

All of the attendees learnt a lot about their game and learnt how to compete against different styles.

The group all attend the Infi nity Foundation Wainuiomata Youth Sports Programme that is run by Terry Stallworth at the high school gym.

They say attending the club has helped them a lot, teaching them about aggression and learning new skills along the way.

Terry says that he wants to teach the children that attend that camp what he knows and also to make basketball as popular as it was 15 years ago in Wainuiomata.

The attendees also include players that are travelling to Las Vegas for an International tournament that takes place later in the year.

“This is the second year that the infi nity foundation has been involved and we really appreciate it, they get us into the gym,” says Terry

Wainuiomata has another team of national champions with the local rugby club winning the Middlesex Sevens over the weekend.

They defeated Hutt Old Boys Marist 24-7 in the fi nal, reversing losses to their rivals in both the Wellington Sevens Championship and the Jubilee Cup fi nals.

The win also means that next year the club will be hosting the tourna-ment, which acts as the national club sevens championships.

The tournament was played at the

Rangataua Sports and Cultural Club in Tauranga and involved teams from all around the North Island.

The day started off for Wainuio-mata by automatically gaining entry into the quarter fi nals after Kia Toa from Manawatu pulled out of the tournament.

This meant that both Wainuiomata and Rangataua progressed from pool A, even though Wainuiomata lost to the tournament hosts in the fi rst game.

In the quarter fi nals, Wainuiomata defeated Waikato Champions Ham-ilton Marist 14-7.

The Hamilton club only scored after Wainuiomata let in a late try.

In the semi fi nals Wainuiomata then destroyed the Auckland Champions Manukau Rovers 27-0 to book their place in the fi nal.

In the fi nal Wainuiomata raced out to an early 19-0 lead, which they held to half time.

Both teams ended up scoring one try each in the second half to send the trophy to Wainuiomata.

The club is also only the second Wellington club to win the trophy after Petone had previously won the tournament back in 1973.

Sevens team on top

Wainuiomata High School stu-dents fl ocked to the fi eld on Friday for its annual Athletics Day.

Sporting their house colours, house points were awarded for participation, as well as the best dressed.

Head of faculty for physical educa-tion and health, Kath McGuinness,

says the houses were revamped this year and given new names, and that each house has been named after a famous New Zealander.

As well as events such as 1500m sprints, javelin, shot put, high jump, and long jump, the school also encouraged students to get involved with fun competitions such as the

bench press and volleyball. A waterslide provided a chance to

cool off, as did a chess playing area in the shade for those who were feeling strategic.

“We’re trying to make it fun, while still providing opportunity for athletes to compete for Hutt Valley athletics next month,” Kath says.
