Continued from Page 1“I haven’t looked back since.”He says he started taking the

game seriously from the start. “I slowly moved through the

ranks.” The years of hard work paid

off when he made the New Zealand team in March.

Harps works as a baker when he is not playing croquet and is trying to raise the $8000 he needs to get to the Croquet World Championships in Lon-don in August.

He says like any player he has one goal, “to win it”.

“If you play well you never know…”

He also made the Trans-Tas-min team and played Australia in February this year.

Harps is the fi rst Wainuiomata player to make the New Zealand team.

He currently plays at the Wel-lington club but says his roots are, and will always be, at the Wainuiomata club.

He loves croquet because of

the challenge and getting to meet new people.

“The game changes every time. There are no two games the same.”

He says Wainuiomata has a real rugby and rugby league culture but he wants to encour-age young people to try other sports as well.

“Just give it a go.” When Harps was mowing

the lawns he never expected to represent New Zealand but he just gave it a go.

From Wainui roots to London stage

By Emily LipsysWhitireia Journalism Student

Schools throughout Wainuio-mata have been participating in a program that uses sport to encour-age leadership and coaching skills in young people.

The Leadership Through League program engages secondary school NCEA PE Students to coach primary school children in the exciting, non-contact sport of fl ag league.

The Leadership Through League program is in its fourth year, and continues to grow.

The program is run in part-nership with Wellington Rugby League, New Zealand Rugby League, KiwiSport, and Sport Wellington.

This is the second year that Wainuiomata High School has been a part of the program.

As part of the program they have gone into four different primary schools, Pukeatua, Wainuiomata, Konini and Fernlea, to coach younger children in rugby league.

Head of the Physical Education Department at Wainuiomata High School, Kath McGinness, says this year was really successful.

“We have had so many positive comments from the Primary Schools about it, and about how our students have stepped up and taught the kids,” she says.

Kath says the program really helped to develop the students’ communication and develop-ment skills, while increasing their confi dence.

Kiwi sport development offi cer for Wellington Rugby League, Greg Selwyn, is the coordinator of the program for the Wainuiomata area.

He says that 16 pupils from the high school have been accredited as New Zealand rugby league mini mod coaches.

“It’s a leadership program that helps identify our next lot of community leaders within the colleges,” he says.

The program runs for fi ve week blocks. During week one the college students are taught how to coach primary aged children through NZ Rugby League coach-ing and refereeing seminars.

For the next three weeks, the college students take one hour sessions at each primary school, and in the last week the participat-ing primary schools come to the college for a Flag League Festival run by the college students.

The extra bonus for participating college PE students is they receive NCEA credits for their work.

“We all know that some kids are probably not comfortable in class, they’re probably better doing rather than listening,” says Greg.

“And that’s what the program

League programme to create leaders

supplies, being able to go out and do something for an hour and have fun with it.”

Year 13 students at Wainuiomata High School, Denzel Guth and John McDonald, completed the program.

“It was a good experience, I learnt more than I expected from the young kids while teaching them,” says Denzel.

“Leadership in the community was a big thing [in the program]. Getting together with other schools teaching the kids helped us with leadership,” says John.

Greg says around 13 colleges a year participate in the Leadership Through League program, and during this time around 3,000 kids are coached.

“With parents working a lot of kids don’t get the opportunity to get off the couch or get outside when they get home.

“They don’t get the opportunity to get coached or educated by their parents, so I think what we’re do-ing goes a long way to fi xing that.”

He says participating in the program also gives students the opportunity to continue coaching

Wainuiomata residents need to be wary of phone calls which ask for large sums of money on behalf of UNICEF NZ or request a donation in return for a large sum of money. The charity has been made aware of a scam which involves a caller (claiming to be from the IRD) informing individu-als that they are entitled to a large sum of money. When the individual calls a Wellington based number to claim the money, they are asked to donate to UNICEF before the money is released.UNICEF has reported it to Scamwatch run by the New Zealand Ministry of Consumer a airs.If you have any questions over the validity of an offer or are worried about email or phone communication you have received regarding UNICEF, please contact our o ce on 0800 243 575 or email [email protected].

NZ Food Week kicked o on Monday and this year there is a focus on getting young Kiwis cooking. The spotlight this year is on young Kiwis who are increasingly becoming kitchen strangers. Research from the most recent New Zealand Children’s Food and Drink Survey found that only eight per cent of children regularly helped with cooking. The New Zealand Nutrition Founda-tion’s (NZNF) annual campaign is about building con dence in the kitchen and teaching Kiwis that cooking at home can be a ordable and delicious.New Zealand Nutrition Foundation Nutritionist Sarah Hanrahan says it is a worrying trend that there is less of a focus on learning cooking skills in schools. “This parallels an increase in food insecurity in our young people and a loss of basic kitchen and cooking knowledge. It also means the home has to become the place young Kiwis learn these essential life skills.” “If we can start taking time to get our young people interested in cooking and more con dent in the kitchen, we will be giving them an important tool to use in maintaining good health and independence.”

A few years ago 17-year-old Waka-Toa Rowlands was given the chance to turn his life around, when he got the opportunity to act in a short New Zealand fi lm called 'Lambs'.

In the fi lm which was written and directed by emerging Kiwi film maker Sam Kelly, Waka plays the lead role of Jimmy, a 14-year-old boy who faces a dif-fi cult decision.

Waka says that if it wasn't for a few persistent teachers that kept pushing him, he never would have auditioned for the lead role in 'Lambs'.

He says Wainuiomata High School principal Martin Isberg gave home two options.

“He told me to either go to the audition or leave. So I thought oh, well, I'm not ready to leave, so I'll go to the audition.

“It was one of those things that I had to do, otherwise my schooling was over.”

Waka says the night after the audition he received the call to say he had won the lead role.

He says that this chance has

opened his eyes to new possibili-ties, and has helped him realise making a change in your life is possible.

“I wasn't the best kid at school but if I wasn't even at school, then none of these opportunities would have come.

“In a way I'm grateful for my rough patch in school, because that was the positive turning point in my life.

In the film Waka’s character must decide whether to stay in his abusive home and protect his younger siblings, or leave to start a new life of his own.

Waka says this storyline displays part of what really goes on in New Zealand.

“Family violence does happen. In the lead role I'm showing that it doesn't have to be like that, you shouldn't have to make those hard choices.”

Lambs director Sam Kelly describes Waka as the next Cliff Curtis.

“That's a big comparison. But to be rated as the next Cliff

Curtis for me just means I have some big shoes to fi ll, and I have to live up to my expectations.

But at the same time, stay hum-

ble and keep my feet on the ground,” he says.

Waka continues to act and credits his grandfather as one of

the biggest inspirations in his life. “This is how I like to repay him.

I’m on the plus side of the police station papa.'”

Young actor next Cliff Curtis

Waka Rowlands acting has changed his life.

An overwhelming majority of residents believe a retirement facility is needed in Wainuio-mata according to a local working group’s survey.

The Community Aged Care Working Group surveyed resi-dents through Wainuiomata Library and local groups late last year. The fi ve questions asked were, do they live alone and own their home, could anyone in their home need residential care within fi ve years, and would they prefer the care to be in Wainuiomata.

Anglican church Reverend Nola Garrod says she visits con-gregation members in care, and believes moving people out of their own community amounts to abuse.

“It’s traumatic enough losing your independence and having to leave your own home and most of your belongings to go into care. When it’s so far from your partner and the people you know and you’re frail, it’s doubly stressful, and can have huge costs in terms of mental and physical health.”

Only fi ve of the 397 respondents believed there was no need for a retirement facility.

Three hundred and four people stated that they would prefer to be in Wainuiomata if they needed a retirement facility.

Wainuiomata residents in need of care currently have to transfer out of their own community.

With a shortage of smaller housing units, many stay in family homes that need upkeep that is often beyond their means and ability.

A new facility is being planned, but relies on changing the reserve status of a part of Hugh Sinclair Park from reserve to residential status. The land does not include the Hugh Sinclair Park play-ground, skate park, BMX and walking tracks.

Hutt City Council is consulting on whether the land is needed as part of our reserve areas, and submissions close on 31 May.

Dear Ed, I was very concerned

to read in the paper last week that the RSA has closed its doors.

The RSA plays an im-portant role in remem-bering our returned ser-vicemen and providing somewhere for them to get together.

By losing the RSA we are not only losing a place for all those people to meet but also a piece of

history. There is also the matter

of all the groups which use the RSA to meet. Where will they be able to get together now?

I wish there was some way to keep our RSA open. Perhaps a fund-raiser is what is called for.

We as a community need to preserve this piece of history.

Kind regards, Concerned resident.

By Rhiannon McConnellDoctor Joanne Hucker of Whai Oranga

Health Centre is moving to New Plymouth to be closer to family.

Joanne has worked at the health centre since 2006 and is sad to be leaving the supportive team.

“I think the community is really lovely, really welcoming.”

“It’s a real pleasure to look after them and provide advice.”

The mother-of-three says her lawyer husband was offered a job in New Plymouth which was too good to pass up.

“It was just such a great opportunity to move close to family. “

With young children Joanne wants them to grow up around their cousins and grandparents.

Her husband’s family live in Taranaki, and her father is in Ohope.

The job at Whai Oranga Health Centre was her fi rst after training as a GP.

In New Plymouth she will be working at Devon Medical Centre part time so she can spend more time with her three children.

She says she is thankful for the local doc-tors at the clinic who have always welcomed her and been very helpful.

By Rhiannon McConnellWainuiomata’s Riverside Kin-

dergarten owner Eleanor Hoare says they cannot wait for to move into the new building.

“It has been my dream for years.”

Eleanor took ownership of the building three years ago and started renovations at the start of this year.

However once builders opened a wall it was evident the building was full of dry rot.

They decided to demolish it and rebuild.

“At the end of the day we are going to get a lovely new building out of it.”

Eleanor and her husband are paying for the building them-selves.

“We are investing everything into this new building.”

She says the money and the temporary displacement are worth it.

“I love the work. I just love the children.

“It means everything for me.” The kindergarten is being held

at St Stephens church at Main Road until the rebuild is com-plete.

Eleanor says the church have been very helpful and accom-modating.

“We are so grateful for them.” She says all going to plan their

new home will be ready in Au-gust.

Eleanor says the kindergarten has a long history in the com-munity and many of the staff have had children attend.

“We are committed to what we are doing and our community.”

A recent incident involving boy racers in Seaview has sparked community leaders to send the message, violence in our commu-nity is not tolerated nor condoned.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace and Hutt Valley Area Command-er, Inspector Mike Hill say they are committed to reducing crime in Lower Hutt and that violence of any sort is not tolerated within the community

“Police and Hutt City Council have helped to reduce crime through a partnership between the community and policing,” they say.

Inspector Hill says local boy racers and car enthusiasts are a highly visible group but the large majority are law abiding. They are not a major cause of crashes and on road harm, to our community

“Our shared concern is where there are incidents of intimidation or anti social behaviour and ‘oc-casions’ where there are burnouts

on public land.“Those law-abiding car enthusi-

asts who gather in large numbers as they have done for years will be very disappointed with the recent

incident.”Mayor Wallace and Inspector

Hill say it is now up to the boy racers.

They say if they wish to continue this sort of behaviour the com-munity will call for stronger rules and laws to control them.

“We believe there is need for a balance between the concerns of residents and business owners and the freedoms of car enthusiasts,” they say.

Anyone who witnesses an inci-dent should

1) Advise police of gathering locations

2) Provide the police with video footage of offending, if possible

3) Phone 111 to report to police if criminal offences are being committed

4) Car enthusiasts themselves should ensure they moderate their own behaviour and the image they portray.

Community leaders committed to reducing violence

By Cr Margaret WillardThere have been a lot of positives

for Wainuiomata over the past month or two, as well as projects that need your input.

Local Alcohol PlansHutt City Council has passed the

first stage of the Local Alcohol Plan, which enables residents to infl uence the number and location of alcohol outlets in their own communities.

The draft plan will be released later this month for consultation, so watch for news of this opportunity to have your say.

Community Boards ConferenceI represented Hutt City Council

at the NZ Community Boards Conference recently, and was inspired by talks by Sam Johnson,

who founded the Student Volun-teer Army, Sue Coutts from Wa-naka Wastebusters, two innovative young community development officers from Horowhenua, and community board members from all over New Zealand.

They showed many ways that boards can work with communi-ties to improve the lives of their residents.

I believe that, given the right level of support from Council, boards within Hutt City Council have the potential to engage and work more actively with their communities for the benefi t of everyone.

Wainuiomata AchievementsIt was gratifying to see Rhys

Casley recently being awarded Hutt City Sportsperson of the Year.

Rhys is from a longstanding Wai-nuiomata family who are proud of the grit and determination that saw him overcome a shoulder injury to make the winning home run for the Black Sox at the world softball championships.

Waka Rowlands from Wainuio-mata High School stars in a fi lm to be released internationally, and local BMX riders and young cup stackers are competing at interna-tional level.

Other young locals have suc-ceeded at a regional and national level, in politics as well as sport, so we have plenty of cause to celebrate the talent and dedication in our community.

AUCTION

8 Wednesday May 22, 2013

By Rhiannon McConnellWainuiomata High School students

are getting the opportunity to see where their education could lead by learning from local mentors.

Head of careers Virginia Wilson says the mentor programme is something new they are trying, and it matches students with mentors to be inspired and encouraged.

“For some of the kids it will give them a reason to stay in school and get their qualifi cations.”

Research Teaching of Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) Mark Stewart is helping with the initiative and says it is all about helping students do their best.

“I am really excited about what is happening at Wainui.”

Mark says the mentor programme makes education real because students can see what their education could lead to.

“It opens their horizons. Young people don’t know all the possibilities out there.”

He says it is important to celebrate success and good role models.

“I think there are some really good role models but we tend to focus on the ones that aren’t.”

Virginia Wilson says she would love to

see students be inspired and encouraged to take their education further.

She says this is an opportunity to put young people in environments they may not get to experience otherwise.

Virginia says they are looking for men-tors from every area but in particular Maori and Pasifi ka males.

“There is just a huge gap of Maori and Pasifi ka males as mentors.”

“We are just looking for mentors, adults that can inspire the kids.”

The mentor programme is part of Pa Harakeke which runs at the school and involves teachers being observed and then refl ecting on the observations and making improvements.

Virginia says they plan to start the programme as soon as possible and hope to have 60-80 mentors.

They are targeting Gateway students and also any student who wants a mentor.

She says it does not take much to be a mentor and all you need is a smile, one to two free hours a term and a willing-ness to listen.

If you are interested in being a mentor email [email protected].

Michael says the church gives a lot of money to help the com-munity and he is very thankful.

“They really deserve enormous praise for that.

Wainuiomata residents will have the chance to participate in the XTERRA Wellington trail running series star light run this Saturday.

This is the fi fth year the run-ning series has been going, and the third time it has been held at the Wainuiomata trail.

“Each year we alternate where the event is held be-tween Wainuiomata Trail and Makara Peak,” says co-event organiser, Evelyn Williamson.

The event has now grown to

be the biggest series of its kind in the Wellington region.

“It is the biggest and most successful running series in the region, and we are really proud of this.”

She says in the past between 200 and 300 people have par-ticipated in the event, however this year there has been a jump in numbers.

“We might get around 400 people. It will be the biggest night run so far,” she says.

There is an option of a short run or walk of 5km or a longer 10km run for more keen run-ners.

“It’s not a race, and it is for all fi tness levels.”

Evelyn says the night run is not an all-night event, and should only take an hour to complete.

“People can do the event, and still have time to go out for tea afterwards.”

Evelyn says the nice thing about the people that join in is that they have lots of fun along the way.

“They are a neat group of people, with great attitudes who are very friendly. It’s a low key event, with a good buzz.”

Evelyn says typically more

women participate than men, and she believes it may be because sometimes women don’t feel safe running at night.

“Running at night is a unique experience it is different than running during the day, women enjoy this event because they can run in a safe environment.”

Enjoy your own experience of the XTERRA Wellington trail running series, star light run on Saturday May 25.

Registrations start at 4pm on the May 25, and the run starts at 6pm.

Wainuiomata Men’s 1st foot-ball team drew with Marist on the weekend.

Team manager Adam Smith says lot s of people turned up to watch the Premier league.

“It was a perfect day to play footy, the sun was shining.”

The start was not great for Wainuiomata, when a Marist player broke through the de-fence and around the goalie.

Adam says luckily the shot went amiss.

Mar ist scored halfway

through 1st half with a great fi nish.

“Our boys kept on battling but didn’t really come close to scoring.”

Adam says the second half started and the boys looked like the still had some fi ght left.

“Eventually it paid off with Scott Williamson kicking the ball over the line from a corner.”

Adam says it was a hard fought draw by both teams on the day.

Despite wet and windy condi-tions Wainuiomata Harriers’ performed well and several personal bests were run at the fi nal cross country relay for the season.

Saturday May 11 was the second and fi nal cross-country relay for the season, in the form of the Varsity relays. These races were held at QEII Park, McKays Crossing, Paekaka-

riki. Wainuiomata Harriers fi elded

four teams with a Senior Men, Master’s Women, Master’s Men and Junior Men teams. All teams ran extremely well with most athletes posting personal best times. A few stand-out performances came from Stewart Clement who ran 1 minute 52 seconds faster than last year; Luke Carman

who ran 1 minute 46 seconds faster than last year; and Joel Carman who ran an incredible 2 minutes 14 seconds faster than last year.

The greulling 3.5km course fi lled with lots of hills, mud and even sand-dunes to negotiate, ensured everyone had a great deal of fun!

On Saturday the annual Vossler Shield cross-country races were held on Mt Victoria. This race sees the toughest nuts of the Wellington running world battle it out in one of the hardest races of the season. The grueling course starts on the Hataitai side of Mt Victoria heading straight up the hill and into the bush tracks that wind around the mountain. To add insult to injury a quick sprint up the hill to the fi nish line. Conditions were good, although a bit wet underfoot which got worse for the men running the last race, having to run two laps which proved a bit more challenging. Wainuiomata Harriers, as a club, placed 6th overall.

By Rhiannon MconnellWainuiomata hammer thrower,

Montaya Wharehinga, has been chosen to represent New Zealand at the Oceania Area Championship in Tahiti at the end of this month.

The 18-year-old high school stu-dent says it was an amazing feeling to be chosen.

“I am excited to just go to Tahiti but I am nervous as for the competition.”

It is Montaya’s fi rst international tournament but just the beginning of great things.

She says the next step is to qualify for the Olympics.

“I am just progressing towards that.”

Coach Shaka Sola says he is very proud of Montaya for getting se-lected for the Oceania Team.

“To be selected to represent your country, I think, is the pinnacle for somebody’s career really but it’s just come up earlier for her.”

“A while ago people questioned whether she would go further than that but we are showing that we can.”

He says she puts in a lot of hard work and it is paying off.

“That’s the bit they should be applauding. The achievement in the end is only a bonus of what they have done.”

Shaka says Montaya has gained a lot of confi dence from the sport.

Monataya says it is her family that have helped her get this far.

“They are the ones that really keep me going.”

For Montaya to compete at this event it will cost upwards of $4000

which she will be fundraising for. Montaya has previously competed

at the NZ Track and Field Champi-onships and won the bronze medal in the javelin throw.

She is also the NZ Secondary Schools senior girls Hammer throw champion. She is the only Wainuio-mata High School athlete to win a New Zealand secondary schools title. Montaya also did very well at the North Island secondary schools championships last month.

She won the senior girls hammer throw, came 2nd in the senior girls javelin, 3rd in the senior girls shot put and 4th in the senior girls discus.

If you would like to help Mon-taya with her fundraising or spon-sorship contact Bradley Sime on 027 449 0746.

Pukeatua Primary won the Susan Gar-den Shield for primary schools hockey last Tuesday.

The tournament has been held for the past four years to promote hockey among local school children.

Ten teams representing Pukeatua, Wainuiomata, Fernlea, St Claudine de Thevenet and Konini primary schools competed in 8-a-side matches at Fraser Park.

Junior convenor Barbara Meiklejohn says the tournament is an opportunity for year fi ve and six pupils to have a go at hockey.

“There is a visible improvement in skill levels from the fi rst games of the day to the fi nal.”

By John MorrisseyWainuiomata played a hard

game against Poneke on Saturday. The game started with Poneke

kicking off into a light south-erly breeze at Kilbirnie Park. The game went back and forth for the first five minutes. John Monu kicked a penalty for the visitors 0-3. Most were surprised when a Poneke player, on attack, used kick boxing tactics when approached by a Wainui defender and the home team were given the penalty. They converted it 3-3. This was closely followed by another penalty to the visitors 3-6. Both sides had their chances to score points but wrong options or mistakes took away most chances. After a kicking dual won by Poneke, they ended up scoring a try. At half time the score was 8-6 to Poneke.

The second half started with Poneke as the more aggressive

team. After a kicking dual and Wainui trying to run the ball out, Poneke scored a try, which they converted.

After some prolonged attack from Wainui they were able to capitalise on all the over the top play that had been going on all day by scoring two penalties.

Poneke made another good breakout and scored a good try in the corner which was also con-verted. Wainui woke up, seeing that the game was getting away from them.

They brought a few very good attacking moves, but could only come up with a single try to Jason Love. This was unconverted, which is a pity as it would have given Wainui a bonus point and every point is gold leading up to the cut off for top eight.

The game ended with Poneke winning 25-17 Wainuiomata.

Poneke beat Wainui
