You can be a source of information forthe police to fight crime.Captain Herman de Jager, acting

station commander of Belhar SAPS re-ports that theyare currently busywithan informer recruitment drive againstcrime.“Wehaveanumberof crime fighting

initiatives that are running and wewant to make the residents aware ofhow they can play their part in thesafety of their neighbourhoods,” hesaid.“Oneof them is ourGunFreeProject

andwehad very good successes for thepast four months with the help of ourinformants. We are looking for morepeople to become involved in this wayso thatwe can fight all illegal activitiesin the area.”De Jager also added there are some

financial rewards in line when infor-mation leads to arrest and successfulconviction.“There is a reward system in place

especially when it comes to informa-tion on guns in the hands of gangsters.“All information will be treated as

secret. It would not be expected of aninformer to testify in court. You willonly deal with your handler and notwith other police officers at the policestation.”De Jager also said that this recruit-

ment drive is part of his operationalplanagainst gangsters andgangactivi-ties.“Community safety begins with the

community and those who want toplay a serious part in curbing it,” heconcluded.V For more information about the informantprogramme call 082 777 8249 or 082 777 4657.All calls will be treated as classified informati-on.

The elderly at eight old age homes acrossthe northern suburbs no longer have tocount the pills in their bottles to make surethey have remembered to take the correctdosage. As part of their community involvement

programme, Durbell Pharmacies took re-sponsibility for blister packing medicinesat all these homes.Heleen Bezuidenhout, pharmacy manag-

er at Durbell CapeGate, explains: “Blisterpacks are commonly used as unit dose pack-aging for pharmaceutical tablets, capsulesand lozenges. Blisters are designed to re-

duce medication related hospitalisationsandadverse events through improvedmedi-cation management and adherence.“Patients who can benefit from this in-

clude the elderly, who are often on severaldifferent medications, people living withHIV or TB, and patientswith cognitive disa-bilities who may have trouble understand-ing or remembering their dosage regi-mens.”Bezuidenhout adds nursing staff at old

age homes are under immense pressure.“Oneof their responsibilities is to pack eachresident’s medication, while also tending to

their needs and care. Prescribed medica-tions and treatment regimens need to betaken as recommended to be effective.“When you’re prescribed multiple medi-

cations and given multiple directions ontaking those medications, it can becomevery difficult to remember everything.”According to Bezuidenhout, Geratec, the

initialmanaging body appointed by the gov-ernment, was very keen to start with blis-ters and contacted Dispensing TechnologySolutions (DTS). “We now pack blisters forhomes from Parow to Brackenfell and KuilsRiver to Gugulethu.”

Have you lost any liquor or not surewhere you misplaced it?If so, perhaps the R12 000 worth of

beer currently being stored at the Kuils Ri-ver police station, could be it.The beer – 543 litres in total – was confis-

cated recently fromahouse in theVrygrondinformal settlement inKalkfonteinwhere itwas found abandoned, police say.The search is now on for the owner, Cap-

tain Isaac van Niekerk, police spokesper-son, says. The 210 SAB crates with 324 bottles of

Black Label, 362 Castle Lager and 38 HansaPilsners were found on 18 July at unit A57in the informal settlement.“We are looking for the owner of the unit.“The premises where we found it is not

used as a shebeen, but rather a storage faci-lity we suspect,” van Niekerk says.“We spoke to the people in the area, but

no one can say to whom the alcohol belongsto,” vanNiekerk added. Police hope that the

owner of the unit would be able to assist.“At the moment the alcohol is being sto-

red at the police station for safe-keeping.”Police were informed of the alcohol

Soil brings life, purpose to Lavis

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz

The love for living large off the soil isgrowing in Bishop Lavis and sur-rounds.

Soil for Life celebrated their home garden-ers in the area recently, who spoke freelyabout their enjoyment of the activities intheir gardens.Fran Fredericks from the organisation,

who heads the training programme, felt thatmore people should be joining to benefitfrom increased activity in their garden, aswell as eating their own, organic vegetablesfor a healthier lifestyle.“Our ultimate goal is to haveBishopLavis

and surrounding areas as a lush green fieldwith healthy families,” she said.“We want to encourage others to start

their organic vegetable gardens and by do-ing that, have thebenefits of havingahealth-ier lifestyle and becoming self sustainable.”One of the enthusiastic gardeners was JaneBrookes, who confessed to not really beinginterested at first.“It was one of my friends who eventually

persuaded me to start attending the talksabout gardening in the community,” shesaid.“Eventually my interest increased and I

went to the course to start a garden eventhough I knew itwouldhave to be in contain-ers because I don’t have the space.“Now I am always so excited when my

seeds start sprouting and I can eat what Ihave grown. It gives me a sense of pride –and I am healthier.”Another gardener that has pride of place

in the organisation, is Hylton Lindewall.“When we need to show sponsors or sup-

porters what can be achieved, we take themto Hylton,” says Fran.“He’s always willing to open his doors to

us for a visit and the pride that he takes inhis garden is an inspiration to many outthere.”Hylton is humble about his achievements,

but immensely proud of how much he haslearnt.“I’ve always loved gardening and this has

just enhancedmy love for planting,” he says.“What we do, keeps us healthy and grate-

ful for what the soil can give us. SometimesI am worried about the birds in the garden, but then I think that we must make a planfor them.“They were put on earth for us so through

our efforts in the garden we must also carefor them.”Marguerite Loftus was part of a group of

dietetic students from Stellenbosch who

were visiting, and she was amazed at theproject.“This visit has been a special experience

for all of us,” she said.“It’s been heartwarming to see how a com-

munity can come together and do somethingto improve their health through something

so simple, yet so powerful.“Wewill be taking this experience inBish-

op Lavis with us for the rest of our lives asan example of what can be done in any situa-tion.”V For more information about Soil for Life, Fran canbe contacted on 071 365 8828.

Executive mayor ofCape Town Patricia

de Lille gets to gripswith helping to

paint in Netreg ablyassisted by SuzetteLittle (behind her),the City’s mayoral

committee memberfor social develop-

ment and earlychildhood develop-ment, and Raelene

Arendse, chairpersonof the social

development andearly childhood

developmentportfolio committee.

Three ECD upgrades for childrenThe Golden Gate area in Netreg is one

of the areas getting the gift of an up-graded Early Childhood Development

(ECD) centre. In linewith the City of Cape Town’s strate-

gic objective to build safe, caring communi-ties R25,4 million has been set aside for theconstruction of these three facilities in Net-reg, Delft and Bridgetown. In this financial year, R10,5millionwill be

spent on these three ECDs.A total of R4,6 million will go towards the

Netreg Golden Gate Early Childhood Devel-opment Centre, which is set for completionin October. This investment will bring much needed

social upliftment to the community of Net-reg inBonteheuwel by giving children a safeand caring, educational environment. The area of Netreg has many socio-eco-

nomic challenges, and has for years experi-enced very little investment. The construction of this centre will do

much to address the injustices of the pastand forms part of the City’s commitment toredress. One of the greatest investments that can

bemade is in thedevelopment andeducation

of children from an early age. That is whythe City is committed to developing ECDcentres, as early childhood developmentprovides a crucial foundation for the over-all development of children and the im-provement of social conditions. On Tuesday 8 September executive may-

or of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille, visitedthe facility in Netreg where constructionteams were hard at work to ensure thetimely completion of the project.“I joined them tohelpwith somepainting

as we put some of the finishing touches onthe centre, which we and the communitywill build into a centre of excellence.“The Golden Gate ECD has been devel-

oped in close partnership with the commu-nity and it will be a community-driven andmanaged centre,” she said. The City’s directorate for social and ear-

ly childhood development will be responsi-ble for repairs andmaintenance at the cen-tre, while the Netreg community forumwill operate the facility. It will accommodate 60 to 80 children be-

tween the ages of one and five andwill haveeight staff members. It will be equipped with toy libraries,

books, internet services, videos and other ed-ucational material, and will also providetraining for other ECD practitioners. The Golden Gate centre was one of the

City’s World Design Capital 2014 projects andembodies the culmination of ideas from ateam of engineers, project managers, archi-tects, community members and councillors

who brought design and ideas together tobenefit the children and community. In addition to the Golden Gate ECD, the

City is also in the process of building twoother ECDs this financial year. The NantesECD in Bridgetown will cost R7,8 millionand the Delft ECD will cost R13 million to-wards the middle of 2016.

City workers on quad bikes will be acommon sight on road edges acrossCape Town over the next five to eight

weeks, as they embark on the first weedspraying programme for the current finan-cial year.“Weed spraying is essential in maintai-ning the city’s sidewalks and road infra-structure as the weeds grow onto the roadsurface, breaking up the seals and asphalt.

The majority of potholes form when waterpenetrates the asphalt due to the crackingof the road’s asphalt surfacing. Weedspraying is part of our preventative main-tenance programme and saves the City asignificant amount in costly repair work,’said the City’s mayco member for trans-port, Brett Herron.Theweed sprayingwill take place acrosseight districts as from this week until mid-

October, weather permitting. Spraying isonly allowed in winds of up to 25 km/h andthe weeds must not be exposed to water orrain for at least eight hours after sprayingin order for the herbicide to be effective.“A hot day with little or no wind is idealfor weed spraying. Given Cape Town’s un-predictableweather, it takes some jugglingin assigning the spraying teams to areaswhere the wind is not too strong or where

we are certain not to have rain shortly the-reafter. The spraying along the edges of ro-ads is mostly done with quadbikes equip-ped with a tank and pump. In some instan-ceswhere vehicles cannot beused or inbio-sensitive areas, spraying is done by handusing knapsack sprayers,” said Herron. The teams will be targeting weeds andgrass growing along the edges of the roads,on footways or within the road reserve.

Bonteheuwel and the media world is inmourning for a major catalyst in itsrich legacy against apartheid, Joseph

“Joe” Aranes. For many he will be known for his role

as journalist but the inspiration for choos-ing this career was born out of his commit-ment to fight for freedom while a high-school learner on the streets of this suburb. On Saturday he was laid to rest from the

Catholic Church in Bonteheuwel, after dy-ing from a heart attack in his Lansdownehome on Thursday 3 September. This reporter got to know Joe better

when he started working at The Argus andsome of our exploits cannot be shared here– but there was always much fun and agreat time was always had by all.It was Joe who started the legendary Fri-

day afternoon “sundowners” inNewspaperHouse, which never closed its doors for any“visitors” or “friends”. I was lucky enoughto get his permission to buy refreshmentson the “bookie” when funds were low.Needless to say, the life of Joe Aranes is,

or should be, an inspiration andmotivationnot only to youth from this area, but toyouth in all are-as now affectedby so muchcrime, gang-sterism anddrug abuse. In the 1970s

and 80s theyouth took upthe fight forfreedom fromapartheid. Joe’slife should be aninspiration forthem to nowtakeup the fightagainst the for-ces that are destroying their lives in the“new” South Africa.Joe, 51, grew up in Bonteheuwel along

with a brother and six sisters, with hisyouth dedicated to fighting for freedom.Involved with student political activities

at high school, he left the country going tofamily in Germany for two years. When he eventually returned, it was in

Bonteheuwel that his activism saw himworking with organisations like the Bonte-heuwel Civic Association and the later es-tablishedBonteheuwel AdviceOfficewhilebeing part of MK in the area. When the United Democratic Front start-

ed, he became its provincial secretary inthe Western Cape. His activism always saw him under the

attention of the authorities and this sawhim in detention twice. When transition to post-1994 South Afri-

ca started, he started his journey into jour-nalism – starting at The Cape Argus as anintern in 1992, a stint at an independentnewspaper, and going back there in 1994eventually rising to rank of assistant newseditor, news editor and political editor in2003. In 2005 his alleged involvement in astill unresolved controversy surroundingthe ANC’s involvement in pay-offs to news-papers, led to first his removal as politicaleditor and eventual departure fromTheAr-gus, but it did not detract from the impor-tant role he played as a mentor. In recent times we may not have been in

touch that often, but at infrequentmeetingsI would be questioned about some of my re-cent writings, especially about new acts onthe music scene, and of course remind meof an “alleged” unpaid tab at the Argus’ssundowner sessions.Rest in peace, Joe, you have left a beauti-

ful legacy of inspiration and motivation toa new generation of journalists in your life-time. Joe is survived by his wife, Kathy, daughter, Thandi, and grandson, Raoul.

The Cape Peninsula University of Technolo-gy (CPUT) is part of making dreams cometrue for learners in Maitland.A partnership with Peninsula School

Feeding has seen them working with HJKroneberg Primary inMaitland tomake thedreams of 200 learners come true.Public relations students at the facility

have been making an effort of harnessingthe collective power of partnership withmany organisations in order to fulfil thedreams of these learners through the #Feed-ADream campaign.“We are extremely happy with what you,

as students, are doing with the children;what you are doing is absolutely wonder-

ful,” said Samantha Williams from theschool. The first of many dreams was realised on

Wednesday 29 July when the Iziko mobilemuseum visited the school.Throughout August the #FeedADream

campaign showed the pupils that dreams docome true and various exciting activitieswere arranged in conjunction with corpo-rates and the public. These ranged from boat trips to being a

princess, and the pupils experienced theirhearts’ desire.A few students who knew the sky wasn’t

the limit, lived out their dreams of havinga personal tour through the hangers at the

Cape Town International Airport wherethey learned about helicopters and aero-planes.“I learned a lot today. I got into a helicop-

ter for the first time, and when I grow up Ireallywant to become a pilot and flymy ownplane,” said one of the children. Some of the adventurous learnerswent up

Table Mountain; others visited MonkeyTown, the Heart Museum or went for a bicy-cle ride along the Sea Point promenade. In the end the #FeedADream campaign

wanted to show the pupils at HJ KronebergPrimary benefitting from PSFA’s servicesthat their dreams really matter and cancome true.

Another element of the #FeedADreamcampaignwas for theCPUTstudents to raisefunds to feed the 200 children fromthe schoolfor a year. With the help of friends, familyand a few willing corporates, the studentsraised R39 557 and realised dreams to thevalue of R42 754.To feed a child for one month at a cost of

R62, or to feed a child for one year at a costof R395, please contact PSFA at 021 447 6020or send an e-mail to [email protected]. On 24and 25 September a comedy fund-raiser willtake place as part of the #FeedADream cam-paign.V For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit www.psfa.org.za.

swaargekry nie,” het sy vertel. Sy het ver-pleegkunde in Bloemfontein gestudeer enis op 21 met ’n “wonderlike man” getroud.Maar toe sy swanger was met hul derde

kind, het dinge begin skeefloop.Haar man is vermoor. Kort daarna is

Ekhet ’n fantastiese, goedbetaalde posisiedaar gehad,” sê sy. Intussen was sy her-haaldelik in rehabilitasiesentrums.“’n Mens leer baie daar; ’n mens kry so-

veel tools.Maar as ’nmens ditmaar net kangebruik daarbuite. “Teen hierdie tydwou my kinders niks meer van my weetnie.

A round of musical chairs has precededthe Toyota Cape Dealer Rally, penulti-mate event in the 2015 National Rally

Championship to be staged in Durbanvilleand Malmesbury on Friday and Saturday. With the leading teams in this year’s game

of thrones level-pegged after the previousround, early log leader Mark Cronje and theFord Performance Rally team announcedthat Cronje’s co-driver, the highly experi-enced and decorated Robin Houghton, willstep down for the remainder of the season.According to the release, Houghton’s deci-

sion was taken “in an effort to reduce theweight of car and crew tohelp improveMarkCronje’s fight for the championship”.It added that Houghton will still be in-

volved in the running of the team and willwork closely with Cronje’s new navigator, and thanked and applauded Houghton for“his dedication and selfless decision”.Meanwhile it has been confirmed that

Gerhard Snyman, long-time navigator forJapie van Niekerk, will now fill the hot seatnext to Cronje to take on arch-rivals LeeroyPoulter and Elvéne Coetzee (Castrol TeamToyota Yaris S2000) in the Toyota Cape Deal-er Rally. With Snyman on duty in the official Ford

Performance entry and Van Niekerk, due tobusiness commitments not making the tripto the Western Cape, rally stalwart and ex-champion Enzo Kuun from Somerset Westwill be taking his seat in the NAD Ford Fies-ta, directed by Kes Naidoo, who normallynavigates for Wilro Dippenaar in the NRC4Class Northern City Panelbeaters ToyotaAuris. The Namibian has decided not to partici-

pate in the Cape event, leaving Naidoo freeto partner with Kuun, who won the SA na-tional rally championship in 2006 for Volks-wagen together with Guy Hodgson.nterestinglyHodgsonwill officiate as com-

petitor liaison officer on the Cape event.

While the scoreboard may show Poulterand Coetzee leading the championship with79 points after their victory in Tshwane – 7points clear of Cronje – they are in realityeven in terms of points as they must droptheir worst result. In Poulter’s case the SecundaMotor Rally,

and in Cronje’s the Imperial ToyotaTshwane rally result.Such is their dominance that with two

events remaining third-placed Giniel de Vil-liers from Stellenbosch and Carolyn Swan(Castrol Team Toyota Yaris) – on 48.5 points– is the only other team still in with amathe-matical chance (after dropping their worstresult) of winning the championship. The Dakar star is 7.5 points clear of the

consistent Gugu Zulu in his VolkswagenSasolracing Polo– the only contender be-

sides Poulter/Coetzee to finish every rallyup to this point in the season –but with onlytwo events remaining Zulu’s best hope is tochallenge De Villiers for third place in thedriver’s championship.FromZulu there is a big points gap to team

mates Henk Lategan/Barry White (24points), while Thilo Himmel/Armand duToit (Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo) is sev-enth, two points ahead of teammate HergenFekken who did not participate in the firsttwo events of the year. The S1600 class also sees a change of seats,

actually even more, as it involves a changeof cars for championship contenders Matt-hew Vacy-Lyle and Schalk van Heerden. The pair, only seven points shy of log lead-

ers and teammates Guy Botterill and SimonVacy-Lyle (Yato Tools Toyota Etios R2), has

secured the Electrothread Toyota EtiosS1600 R2 of Chris Coertse for the Cape eventafter they spectacularly rolled their Fra-gram Tools Etios S1600 R2 in the Tshwanerally.Botterill/Vacy-Lyle are only 2.5 points

clear of the Imperial Toyota TshwaneMotorRally runners-up Paulus Franken/HenryKohne (Manitou Group VW Polo R2), so anelectrifying duel can be expected in theSwartland. The seventh and penultimate round in the

2015 championship, supported by the Toyotaand the Toyota dealers in the Western Cape, will kick off with four tar stages on Friday,18 September, at Killarney and Cape Gate, and eight gravel stages in and around Mal-mesbury on Saturday 19 September for atotal distance of approximately 380km.

SOCCER: CUBS FESTIVAL ANNUAL THRILLER

100 cub clubs compete

JOSEPH PILLAY

The cubs festival of the Rygate LocalFootball Association (LFA) is no doubtan annual thriller and this year’s

theme, “celebrating diversity”, was inspiredby the spirit and scenes of the hundreds ofsoccer fans united during the four-day eventfocusing on the youth in communities.About 100 clubs from all over the Western

Cape participated at the Johnson Roadsports complex inRylands to compete for thevarious silverware. The age categories u.6, u.8 and u.10 were

introduced this year. The event had cateredfor u.7s and u.9s the previous three years. The tournament, now in its fourth year,

fuses sport, fair play, culture and commu-nity service into a competition format thatinspires community youth to embrace theskills they have acquired through Score’ssport and development programmes.According to Faizel “Boeta” Samaai,

president of RygateLFA, it is a tournamentfor children to come and enjoy, to have funand take the opportunity to form friend-ships and share experiences with otheryoung people who are motivated by socialchange.“Secondly, the cubs event aims to in-

crease sportsmanship as well as preventdiscrimination in the game of soccer.”
