“Fransie van Zyl road is named after afarmer from here who was originallyknown as Fransie van Tegt, so there is a his-tory from here that played a part in the gen-eral history of the Cape.”Former Elsies River High principal Gil-

bert Thomas also spoke with passion aboutthe rich heritage of the area.“Many powerful people have come from

this area and are making their mark in theworld today,” he said.“Doctors, lawyers, academics, professors,

sportstars and musicians like Robbie Jan-sen all had their roots here and never letpoverty ornegative influences get the betterof them.“Knowing thisheritage canplayabigpart

in teaching our youth that they must lookbeyond their circumstances to rise up justlike so many of them did before.”

One of the colourful characters who is al-so part of the history of the area, is DannyBrown, a top sportsman in his youth, whocan still regale people with the tales of someof the best who came from the area.“This area has a rich tradition in sport.

We had a community that produced thebest. I was one of those top athletes and asoccer player as well, with a communitythat supported the talent that was aroundthem.“I still have the blazers and badges to

prove it,” he said with a smile as he endedhis speechwith a song.Everybody joined in.Senior librarian Julian Schreuder added

that the librarywas very happy to be associ-ated with the project.“We are proud to be part of this pro-

gramme and hope it grows,” he said.“Sooftenweareaskedabouthistoryof the

area, but we don’t have the resources. Thatwill now, through the society, be availablefor the learners who want to do projectsabout the area.”Ursula Reynolds concluded by requesting

that people come forward with their histo-ries, photos or artifacts and documents forpreservation.“We are also looking for verbal historic

tales and will send somebody to visit you torecord those histories and stories.“We are appealing to all residents and

former residents to come forward withthose stories; it’s important to make a newgeneration aware of the importance of thatheritage.“Knowing your history can play a part for

the future of this area,” she said.V For more information about the society contactUrsula on 082 694 2040 or Nadene on 083 962 7573.

High school learners in Belhar have thechance to make their feelings feltabout their future with a unique

project in the area.SafeRoads forYouth in collaborationwith

Belhar police and thePovertyRelief andEm-powerment forChangeOrganisation (Preco)are hosting an essay and debate competitionfor high school learners in the area.Captain Herman de Jager, acting station

commander of Belhar SAPS, pointed outthat this was an important project in the ar-ea to find out what ideas the youth have

about a positive future in their neighbour-hoods.“This project is about discovering how to

combat the challenges youth are faced within today’s life,” he said.“The essays are divided into four catego-

ries meaning there are four topics to choosefrom, but for each learner to qualify theymust strictly adhere to the criteria andrules.“Boxes will be left at schools in the area

and essays must be done by midday onWednesday 14 October.“Entrants must stick to the topic they

choose and itmust be done by the individuallearner, not a group.”

The topics and questions that must bedealt with in the essays are:

gangsterism?

coming addicted or dealing in drugs?De Jager also explained that this project

is part of selecting the Belhar junior com-missioner who will assist police with identi-fying youth activities in the area.“The elected learner will hold the position

for a year and this project will become anannual event.”

Barefoot journey to successGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

The journey from a backyard shack inHanover Park to positive empower-ment starts with that first mile you

walk to your dreams. That is the story in Many Miles – a Life

Story by Bellville resident Ivan Koopmanwho launched his debut book at the Hugue-not Library in Belhar recently.Currently a life skills and youth develop-

ment facilitator for a programme at Learn-ing Cape Initiative, Koopman’s journeystarted when he had to leave school at 14 towork as a tea boy and general cleaner at thePost Office to eventually becoming themed-icalmanager at amajor construction site inDubai.“Leaving school at that age was heart-

breaking,” he said at the launch.“But, it had to be done for the survival of

our family and I somehow knew that itwould not be the end for me because I hadfaith in God’s plans for me.“I walked barefoot along themain road to

Cape Town going into shops to ask for work

because it was needed. People thought I wasjoking, but I had to do it.”Koopman added that while the book was

a celebration of his triumph, he alsowantedit to be an inspiration to people who mayhave come from similar situations, or whomay still be in such situations, to never giveup on their dreams.“You must always believe that through

God’s love for you there is a positive planfor you and you must believe in that planfor you.“This book is also there to motivate our

youth who are in situations where they aresurrounded by so much negativity. The an-swer toyour empowerment is there, but youmust be prepared to do the ground work –the hard work – and have the patience toknow that the end result is going to be yourultimate victory.”Before working as the medical manager

in Dubai, Koopman worked at the MetroAmbulance Service from 1981 to 1998 andthen at St John Ambulance.V For more information about obtaining the bookcontact Ivan on 083 777 6580 or email [email protected].

The baby boom among teenagers hasdropped, and authorities arepleased with these latest statistics.

According to statistics, released by theCity of Cape Town’s health department, there were 3 316 babies born to mothersaged 18 or younger in Cape Town in 2013,which accounted for 4,4% of all births re-corded for that year. The data for 2014 shows that 2 936, or

4,2%, of babies born fell within this cate-gory. This means that the teen pregnan-cy rate in Cape Town has slowed from5,3% in 2006 to 4,2% in 2014.“This is good news and bears testa-

ment to the availability of contraceptionand education offered by a range of gov-ernmental and non- governmental part-ners,” said the City’s Mayco member forhealth, Siyabulela Mamkeli.

“I also believe it is proof that youngpeople are takingmore responsibility fortheir sexual and reproductive health, something that we have been highlight-ing formanyyears nowandwhich is alsoa key theme for World ContraceptionDay later this week.”

Pregnancy ‘wanted’World Contraception Day is held on

Sunday 26 September. The vision of thisannual worldwide campaign is to ensurethat every pregnancy is a wanted preg-nancy. This is achieved through aware-ness drives so that young people canmake informed choices about their sexu-al and reproductive health. The health department offers a range

of contraceptives at its clinics across the

city, including oral contraception, in-jectable contraception, intra-uterine de-vices, Implanon, sterilisation and con-doms. Petogen, which is a three-monthinjection, is the most popular contracep-tive at City clinics. The health depart-ment has noticed an increase in the up-take of reproductive health services inthe last financial year.

Better servicesThis can be attributed to the wide

range of options available to clients, butalso the introduction of “fast lanes” forfamily planning clients at some clinics.Their visits are managed via an appoint-ment system which reduces waitingtimes. Where this service is not availa-ble, waiting times have the potential toinfluence whether clients return for fol-low-up visits. Another challenge is em-poweringwomen so that they can negoti-ate birth spacingwith their partners andinvolve their partners in decisionsaround family planning. At a workshop in May, the health de-

partment devised additional interven-tions to broaden its reach in the 12 to 18age group. This includes partneringwithschools and other City departments foreducation and awareness programmes,fast-tracking young people attendingclinics for reproductive health reasonsusing queue marshals, increasing theavailability of educational materials, es-tablishing aPrevention of TeenPregnan-cy Forum to monitor trends and high-light concerns or challenges, and investi-gating the provision of more clinics.

fiscation of more than 500 grams of dagga.During further operations conducted

Residents are more likely to experi-ence snake encounters due tospring-time, warns Shaun MacLeod,co-ordinator of the Snake Rescuevolunteer team in the Cape Peninsu-la.

“Every spring snakes come out ofhibernation on the hunt for a muchneeded spring meal. Snakes are veryimportant to our natural environ-ment as they control the vermin ro-dents that destroy crops and carrynumerous diseases,” says MacLeod, who is also a director of Reptile Edu-cational Awareness Consultants(REAC).

“Snakes and various other rep-tiles form part of the very importantbalance in our ecosystem. A simpleequation – the more snakes we kill, the more rodents and pests therewill be.

“We have encroached into theirnatural habitat through habitat deg-radation, fragmentation and urban

expansion.“Ponds, heaps of building rubble

and rockeries in and around gar-dens and homes create micro envi-ronments, which will inevitably at-tract snakes,” MacLeod warns.

He reminds residents that snakes“are attracted to neglected areaswhere there is not much disturb-ance, as snakes hate confrontation”.

“There is no real way of keepingsnakes off your property, but if youkeep your grass cut short, trees welltrimmed and clean up all rubble, just to mention a few, then there isless likelihood for snakes to resideon your property. In short – keepyour garden tidy,” he says.

“Leave snakes alone – and it willleave you alone. Most bites occurwhen people attempt to kill snakes,”he says.V If a snake is encountered, contact MacLe-od on 082 532 5033 for advice or for emer-gencies pertaining snakes.

Cape Town schools are almostfull and the education depart-ment urges parents to enrol

children as soon as possible.“To date, schools in the Western

Cape have processed 128 545 appli-cations for placement for the 2016school year. So far, 118 429 learnershave been placed,” said educationminister Debbie Schäfer in a state-ment to the media last week.

“Parents were encouraged to ap-ply to schools by 30 June, and thosewho now still need spaces atschools need to urgently approachtheir nearest schools or the closestdistrict office to find out whichschools still have spaces availa-ble,” she said.

“We cannot guarantee places inschools of choice, but will do ourutmost to place children appropri-ately. It is crucial that parents whohave failed to enrol their child forthe 2016 school year to do so urgent-ly and before the end of the thirdterm to ensure that they secure a

place for their child.”Schäfer says there are currently

3 470 learners who have been ac-cepted at more than one school.

“Some 2 257 of these learners areGrade 8 learners who have not con-firmed if they are taking up theirplaces,” she says.

“Moreover, we expect thatlearners will continue to migrateto the Western Cape from otherprovinces in search of a better edu-cation and access to opportunities. Each year we plan as best we canfor the influx of additional learnersfrom other provinces. The inwardmigration into the Western Capehas huge financial and planningimplications, impacting on the pro-visioning of education resourcesand the overall management of thesystem,” she says.

“We have to prioritise accordingto the greatest need across thewhole province, and available bud-get. Our current budget is underconsiderable pressure.”

The sixth annual Pink Lady Craftsfor Cancer event has never beenmore successful than this year.“In the first year, only 25womenat-

tended – mostly because we beggedthem to come – whereas this year wehad waiting lists for tickets,” saysTheresa Richards, marketing con-sultant at Top Fruit who along withTrue Cape initiated this event toraise funds for the Tygerberg Hospi-tal breast cancer clinic’s transportfund. The prestigious event was held at

D’Aria wine estate on Saturday andthey managed to raise R67 000 thisyear.Professor Justus Apffelstaedt,

head of the breast clinic at TygerbergHospital, explained why this initia-tive was so invaluable.“Many of our patients live on gov-

ernment grants of about R1 200 permonth. A round trip to Tygerberghospital will cost them up to R150.The choicebetweenhavingenough toeat for the family and transport fortherapy is stark.”

This is why we chose the causeLiza Matthews, marketing manag-

er at Pink Lady, said it was for thisreason they chose this cause.“Although treatment costs are cov-

ered by government, some patientscannot afford the transport cost toand from the hospital for regular ra-diotherapy sessions,” she said.Apffelstaedt added this year was

especially auspicious for him as itmarked his 20th year as head of thisclinic.More importantly, he informed

women of the latest technology in thefield of breast cancer treatment.“One of only two automated breast

volumescanningmachines on the en-tire African continent arrived fourweeks ago.“A probe scans over the entire

breast, duringwhich it records imag-es that are sent to a computer for 3Dreconstruction,” he says.“Not only is this method more ef-

fective to detect cancerous lesions indense breast tissue of especiallyyounger women, but it is also not aspainful as a normal mammograph,”he said. After learning the art of lino print-

ing from Lizel Cloete, craft editor forIdeas magazine, the women weretreated to the heavenly piano soundsof virtuoso Rocco deVilliers followedby a three-course meal, in which ap-ples featured as the hero.

The Riverton Estate Residents Associa-tion is mobilising ahead of their gener-al meeting.

Chairperson Steve Ross is calling on resi-dents to attend because there are some im-portant matters coming up for discussion.

“It will be held on Monday 28 Septemberfrom 19:00 at the Robin Hood Crèche inWarner Crescent,” he said.

“We invite all residents to attend and hearwhat is on the cards for our community aswell as to raise issues that may be of concernto them. The ward councillor and police willalso attend the meeting.

Forward concerns before meeting“People can forward all their concerns re-

lating to them to me so that I can informthem before the meeting,” he said.

“This will ensure that you leave the meet-ing with the best solution and answer toyour concerns.”

Ross will also give clarity on the role of

the neighbourhood watch in the communi-ty. “I have been privileged to give motiva-tional talks to NHW teams in other commu-nities in recent months,” he says.

Watches are not security companies“It is sad that only a small percentage of

residents in all communities truly under-stand how the watch operates. NHW teamsare not security companies that have signedcontracts, service agreements or salaries.

“They are volunteers from the communitywhere they live and who offer their time –students, workers, pensioners and otherswho are mostly unappreciated for their sac-rifice, as they are accused of not being every-where all the time.

“These accusations and negativity haveseen many teams dwindle in size or even to-tally dissolve in many communities.”

Observers are everywhere“Our patrol team may only be 23 people,

but our observers are everywhere.V For more information contact Steve Ross on 081389 8026.

Firsttime action for new Killarney

The sport and GT category are the fastest cars at Killarney and will have to take careful note of the new layout.PHOTO: DAVE COLLINS

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

What is effectively an all-new motorracing circuit in the Western Capeis going to see action for the first

time on Saturday 26 September. The eighth roundof the excitingWingfield

Motors sponsored Power Series then takesplace in an anti-clockwise (reverse) direc-tion at the new circuit.Althoughdrivers and riderswill be travel-

ling around the same track with every cor-ner having a variable radius, the angles andspeed will have to be worked out anew andcommitted to memory. Some will be slower, while othersmay surprisingly be faster thanbefore. Of course, braking distances are go-ing to be another variable factor. This maybe to the advantage of those who have hadexperience on other South African circuits, and especially to the few who have racedoverseas. This especially applies to drivers like

Steve Humble who has featured prominent-ly in sports car events onavariety of circuitsin Britain. And to a lesser extent to Bloub-erg’s Craig Jarvis, providing his hugelypowerfulV10DodgeViperhashad its venomsac replenished. Jarvis has recently compet-ed in Europe in a Porsche GT3, while the Vi-per was in devastating form in East Londonearlier this season. As far as the top bikers are concerned, it

is going to be interesting to see how quicklythe talented Dave McFadden, who is thisweek still competing in the 2015World SuperStock Championship, is able to come toterms with the new layout.Meanwhile a tremendous amount of work

has gone into ensuring the safety of the trackin its new format, and the organisers arewell satisfied with their effort. Majorchanges include the repositioning and re-placement of many of the steel and tyre safe-ty barriers and the relocation of two of themarshal points.

A chicane or artificial corner similar tothose at the famed Monza autodrome wherethe Italian Fq Grand Prix is held and effec-tively slow the overall pace of the F1 cars, has also been added. The Killarney chicaneis on the main straight at the approach tothe banked Cape Town Corner bend wherecompetitors will have to flick right, then leftand marginally right again before swinginghard left into the tight hairpin bend.Early tests indicate that while the track

maybemarginally quicker than the originalthat has been in operation since the early1960s, it promises to be even more exciting.

The Killarney organisers are taking fulladvantage of the coming long weekend thatbegins with the national Heritage Day pub-lic holiday to stage a giant vintage, veteranand classic car show on Thursday, Septem-ber 24.The Friday school holiday will then be fol-

lowed by the reverse direction Power Sportmeeting on the Saturday. Together they areexpected to result in the biggest motorsportblockbuster attraction seen in these partsfor many years.Open to cars and motorcycles built be-

tween 1985 and backtracking to the launch

of the very first motorised Benz in 1886, themotor show entries are being divided intothree age classes to facilitate their judging.Any unit built before 1940 will be classifiedas a genuine golden oldie. The remainingclasses are from 1941 to 1970 and finally 1971to 1985. They will all be on display on thelarge infield area behind the Killarney club-house.Although not classified as official entries,

the show is also going to host guest displaysof new cars as well as a selection of wacky, radical Mad Max type exhibits from the re-cent Afrikaburn Festival in the Karoo.
