NUMSA STRIKE RAGES ON: LOCAL FACTORIES AFFECTED

The ongoing strike byworkers in theme-tal and steel industrieshashada severeimpact – both operationally and finan-

cially – on the factories in the Blackheath in-dustrial area.Members of the National Union of Metal-

workers of South Africa (Numsa) have beenon strike for nearly three weeks, which hascost some companies thousands of rands.Steve Scott, the sales manager at the wire

products manufacturer, Allens Meshco inWimbledon Road, Blackheath said that over180 members of staff are currently on strike

at the factory. “The strike has had a terribleimpact on our business,” he says, with somecustomers even opting to collect their ownstock. “We have told them that they do so attheir own risk.”

A domino effectHeadded that it is still difficult to saywhat

the financial impact will be on the company,but that the strike will “obviously” have aimpact. “We make about R15 million amonth in turnover. The strike will cause amajor financial loss.”Apart from the effect on factories, he pre-

dicts that the strike will have a “domino ef-fect” on the entire industry.

“It effects engineering companies, con-struction companies, civil and steelworkscompanies everything. . . it is a major pro-blem.“The entire building industry is going to

come to a standstill, they can’t continue likethis,” he says. However, the situation at Al-lens Meshco has been improved by em-ploying several linemanagers to operate themachinery. “We want the strike to finish.We are still going to feel the loss for a longtime.“The sad thing about this is that some fac-

tory workers want to work, they have carpayments, school fees and bonds to pay.”The strikingworkers currently receive no

wages or salaries.

‘Don’t want to strike’“I feel for them,” Scott continued.Colcab, a factory near to Allens Meshco,

has also been severely affected.Here they manufacture refrigerated dis-

play cabinets. Keith Reeves, the director ofhumanresources atColcab, said that severalof the company’s workers have said thatthey do not want to go on strike.“Some of them did not want to strike but

said they have no choice.There has been intimidation, but nothing

yet at Colcab,” he said.V To page 2.

An administrative glitch was responsiblefor the irregular transaction charges deduc-ted frompensionerswhowithdrew their oldage grants fromPicknPay stores duringDe-cember last year and again in April this ye-ar.Several confused local pensioners contac-

ted TygerBurger after small amounts, ran-ging from R2.50 to R10, had been deducted.At the time, director of customer services

at Pick n Pay, Jonathan Ackerman confir-med that the supermarket does not chargeany fees for thewithdrawal of SouthAfricanSocial Security Agency (Sassa) grant pay-ments, and Sassa informed pensionersacross the peninsula that it had “launchedan investigation,” forwarding all com-plaints to its service provider, CPS.Despite numerous enquiries from Tyger-

Burger to determinewhy thedeductionswe-remade, Sassanever clarified the reason forthe deductions.

Pick n Pay in the clearLast week, some sixmonths after the first

complaintswere lodged, anexplanationwasfinally provided by Cash Paymaster Servi-ces (CPS), the company contracted by Sassa

for the payment of social grants.CPS is owned by NET1, a global company

which provides payment and transactionprocessing services for several industries.Serge Belamant, CEO

and chairperson of Net1apologised for the late res-ponse to TygerBurger’squeries.He explained the irregu-

larities as follows:“Numerous merchant

stores (including Pick nPay) have entered intoagreementswithCPS/Net1to ensure that grant benefi-ciaries arenot charged feeswhen they buy goods orwhen they draw cash in thesemerchant sto-res.

Agreement“This free service is not available at mer-

chant stores that have not entered into anagreement with CPS/Net1.“In this case, standard banking fees apply

for all transactions such as cash withdra-wal, purchases, balance enquiries, invalidPIN entry and so forth.Theyaremore than20 such feeswhichare

charged by the issuing or acquiring banks.”

He said that Pick n Pay had changed thename of some of their stores on the CPS sy-stem, so these stores no longer formed partof the agreement between Pick n Pay and

CPS/Net1.“This led to the fees un-

der question being char-ged. When this was disco-vered, it was rectified im-mediately. Unfortunately,we process 100s of thou-sands of transactions in avery short period of timeand we needed to identifywhich grant beneficiarieshad been affected andwhich had not.Many grant beneficiaries

complained via our call centre and these in-dividuals were refunded immediately. Ma-nywhodidnot file or report a complainthadto wait for our IT division to reconcile allten million accounts and ensure that allcharges that should not have been leviedwere reversed,” he said.Belamant said that this had taken a few

weeks to finalise but all reversals should becompleted by the end of July.He added that, as of 1 April, all Pick n Pay

stores have complied with the aforementio-ned agreement.

increase of 10% along with a list of additio-nal demands.Their employers say they are are already

offering between 8% and 10%.“We normally have a three year agree-

ment, but now that the workers are deman-ding an increase for one year, they want tocomeback for another increase,”Reeves ex-plained.Vuyo Lufele, regional secretary for Num-

sa, said they will either settle for one yearat 10% or for a three year agreement for noless than 10%. “We want double digits,” hesaid.Meanwhile, negotiations between the

union and employers are still underway inJohannesburg.

Hulle hetglo die drywer wat in daardie stadium ag-ter die stuur van die bakkie was, met mes-se gedreig.“Een van die mans het gesê die bestuur-

gesê.Selfs sy trekwaentjie is al gesteel.“Gelukkig het ek dit teruggekry,” het

Jannie gesê.“Ek is net dankbaar vir die vriendelike

polisie wat soggens verby ry en vra of ekalright is,” het hy bygevoeg.

Haar liefde vir netbal het ’n inwonervan Wesbank geïnspireer om diésport te gebruik om kinders hier van

die gebied uit die strate te hou.Wesbank is bekend vir dwelmverwante

misdade en bendegeweld.Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Hangan, wat vanaf

die ouderdom 6 jaar netbalspeel, rig drie maal ’n weekjong meisies in die geweldge-teisterde gebied af.

Sy het in 2011 die netbal-klub, Glen Heart, gestig. Jac-kie het in 1999 in Wesbank in-getrek en van 2000 tot 2010 virdie Ou Apostoliese kerk netbalgespeel voordat sy die klub in2011 gestig het.

“Ek het dit gedoen om diekinders uit die kwaad te hou,om hulle weg van die dwelmsaf te hou en tienerswangerskappe te ver-hoed,” het Jackie gesê.

Drie klubsHaar netbalspan was vroeër jare by die

voormalige Oostenberg-netbalunie geregi-streer. Die unie het ontbind.

Die span ding nou oor naweke mee mettwee ander spanne in Eersterivier en Klein-vlei.

“Ons is drie klubs wat op die oombliksaamspeel.

“Ons probeer drie maal ’n week oefen,”het Jackie, wat ook in 1983 die netbalklubEersterivier United gestig het, gesê.

Sy probeer tans ’n nie-regeringsorganisa-

sie stig om sodoende donasies te bekom.Haar netbalklub het tot onlangs toerustingby die Stad Kaapstad ontvang.

“Ons het geen toerusting gehad nie totdatdie raad twee weke gelede vir ons twee net-balpale en ’n bal geskenk het,” het sy gesê.

Hosted by Learn toEarn, a skills development and job creation organisation, the first week’s programme includeddeveloping life skills such as communication and conflict resolution. jongens breek dit af,” het hy gesê.’n Gedeelte van sy palissade-heining is

afgebreek sodat mense makliker toegangoor ’n kanaal tot by die R300-snelweg kankry en sodoende tot in Delft kan kom.“Die jongens spring dit stukkend. Ek

kan niks daaromtrent doen nie.”Stukke van die heining is ook verwyder

om as skroot te verkoop.“Party mense kom hier deur om hulle

gemors agter my huis te stort, ander omtot by die brug te kom en partymaal ookom mense langs die R300 te beroof,” hetJeffrey vertel.Hy het al voorheen mense daaroor ge-

Die gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum (GPF)van Kuilsrivier vergader eerskomende Dins-dag 22 Julie om 19:00 in die raadsaal van diemunisipale gebou in Van Riebeeckweg(R102), Kuilsrivier.

Residents in Wesbank held a peaceful pro-test in the area on Tuesday morning aftera five-year-old girl was shot in the area.

The child, whose name is still unknown,was shot and wounded in the back on Mon-day night in Marloth Road in Wesbank, Jo-seph Adams, spokesperson for the MfuleniCommunity Police Forum, said.

He said a 13-year-old boy was also shotand wounded during the incident on Mon-day. Themotive for the shooting is still un-known.

A group of people gathered in front of thechild’s house inMarlothRoadat about 11:00on Tuesday, Adams said.Colonel Tembin-kosi Kinana, spokesperson for the WesternCape police, said in a statement that Wes-

tern Cape police were alerted to the shoo-ting incident inwhich the girl was shot andinjured.“The circumstances surroundingthe incident are currently unknown, howe-ver, the policehave openeda case of attemp-ted murder.” He said the victim was takento a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Russel Meiring, spokesperson for ER24,said the girl was taken to hospital in a criti-cal condition after being shot in the back.

“ER24 paramedics arrived on the sceneand found the young patient lying on herside in a small pool of blood. “The patientwas assessed and found to have sustaineda bullet wound in the middle of her back.

“Paramedics performed advanced lifesupport treatment before transporting herto Red Cross Hospital for urgent medicaltreatment,” Meiring said.

No arrests have been made yet.

Hendri Terblanche (38), submitted a peti-tion to theNationalCouncil of Provinces on3 July, asking that working men be given10 days paternity leave, Sapa reported to-day. He also approached every member ofparliament and urged them to draft a newBill to this affect.

According to Terblanche, whose wife Gi-selle gave birth to twins in November lastyear, 3 days family responsibility is notenough for parents who opt for caesareansection or in the event of other medicalcomplications.“Everyone is quick to say fa-thers are not involved enough with theirchildren, but with only three days’ paid fa-mily responsibility leave, they have a dis-advantage. The law needs to change to al-low fathers to be involved,” he said.

W e’ve all seen the hundreds of adsadvertising illegal abortions.

Yet there seems to be an endlessstream of women opting for ‘backstreet’abortions, despite legal state abortions be-ing available for free.

A woman from Bloekombos in Kraaifon-tein last Wednesday ended up in TygerbergHospital after she bought pricey – andhighly dangerous – abortion pills on theblack market.

Captain Fienie Nimb, spokeswoman ofthe Bellville police, confirmed that the 28-year-old woman visited Kraaifontein DayHospital after swallowing the pills andstarted going into labour without any con-tractions.

The woman was transported as an emer-gency case via ambulance to TygerbergHospital, Nimb said.

The legal time frame within which anabortion can be done is 12 weeks, and thenonly through a registered practioner, cli-nic or health practitioner.

Apparently, the woman was too emba-rassed to seek legal medical help when shefinally decided to terminate the pregnancyat this late stage.

The staff at the hospital managed to savethe baby. But they are also still consideringthat charges be brought against her.

The woman bought the abortion pillsfrom a foreign national – valued at onlyabout R2 each – for about R550 for two pills.

“We find women are still very ignorant,naive and vulnerable – easy targets for tho-se selling these abortion pills on Google, orthosewhoadvertise in pamphlets, in trainsor on lampposts,” she said.

“They sell these pills and get away withit, because they are difficult to trace, usingcellphone numbers that have been RICAdby legitimate South African citizens, whopay to have their identity used.”

She urged the public not to buy the pillswhich will ultimately cripple the marketfor the illegal medications, rather using le-gitimate and registered practitioners.

The provincial health department saidthey have gone to great lengths to ensurethat the public is educated and informedabout legal abortions.

“Theprovincial communicationsdepart-ment sent out a message informing the pu-blic about the free and safe termination ofpregnancy (TOP) services that are provi-ded in the designated facilities in the Wes-tern Cape,” said Laticia Pienaar, principalcommunications officer at Tygerberg Hos-pital.

The departmental women’s health sub-directorate even developed an educationalwomen’s health tool which is used used bycommunity care workers while they con-duct their home visits, she said.

“The topic of safe and free TOP servicesis addressed during the visits.

“There are also TOP posters educatingthe public on medical TOPs were distribu-ted recently to all health care facilities,”Pienaar said. “One can report to any facili-ty and if necessary, will be referred to aTOP designated site.

“A woman who is less than nine weekspregnant qualifies for a medical TOP- adrug-induced abortion,” she said.

The number for legal and successfulabortions at government facilities was at12 709 in theWesternCape for 2010/2011, ac-cording to a statement.“

If members of the public come across aposter advertising abortion, they must re-port it to their nearest police station. Allbackstreet abortions are illagal and mustbe reported.

All sexually activewomenof 12years andolder may use free family planning servi-ces at all government clinics.

Baie het vir my gesê dierondtrek sal die kinders seopvoeding benadeel. Ek ver-staan nie waarom nie, wantalle skole het dieselfde leer-planne. Al wat ons as ouersmoet doen, is om tyd af teknyp om ons kinders te helpmet skoolwerk.

Ons kan nie verwag onskinders moet konsentreer indie skool terwyl hulle hulbekommer oor ouers se proble-me tuis nie.

Soms weet ek nie waar dievolgende brood of vanaand sebord kos vandaan sal kom nie,maar dit is my probleem ennie my kinders s’n nie.

Al bekommernis wat ’n kindmoet hê, is om goed te presteerop skool om ’n beter toekomsvir homself te bou.

Ouers, daar is nog tyd. Neemjou posisie in as ouer.

Leer jou kind dat daar ’nverskil tussen ’n ouer en kindis.

Pop singer, Daniel Baron, is giving fansa taste of his new album, with his newsingle, “Heartbreak City”.

The chart-topping songwriter won heartsacross the country with his debut album,It’ s Time, which clinched eight radio hits.Now he’s busy with his next, as yet unna-

med, album.Daniel says he’s always loved performing

and even while he was still at school, youcould find him performing at the nearestpub or club after hours.Being one of the top 10 contestants in the

2009 Idols competition gave him lots of expo-sure and made him even more certain thatperforming was what he wanted to do withhis life.“Then the realworkbegan,” he says.Dani-

el points out that many people think you en-ter Idols, “and then the work is done”, butthis isn’t the case, especially since he wentstraight into the studio to work on It’s Time.Daniel describes his music as pop/rock, a

genre which gives him plenty of room to ex-perimentwithdifferent sounds. “I love colla-borating with new genres and new artists,”he says. “It’s sucha strongmediumtobeableto take two completely different genres orminds and create something spectacular.”His collaboration with ProVerb, resulted

in the single “Not Here”, which shot to num-ber one on the Kia Take40SA chart last year.He also recently did a song with dance act,Pascal & Pearce.

so successful is that his songs are honest andthat people can relate to them.While his music has been recieved well in

For the second year in succession, Wes-tern Province beat the Blue Bulls 24-11in the u-16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo ‘un-

official’ final rugby match. This year’s acti-on tookplace atTshwaneUniversity ofTech-nology on Thursday.

“We are all very excited with the win, butI have to say it has been a stressful twodays,” said WP manager, Frikkie Coetzer.“Our game against the Golden Lions wasperhaps the hardest game of the tournamentas they are physically strong and came at uswith no mercy. But we managed to beatthem. Today’s game was perhaps not asphysically challenging, but the Blue Bullsplay a good tactical game. We had to change

our game plan to introduce a combinationof both strength and tactics, which workedin our favour in the end.”

This win means that WP has completed aCoca-Cola Youth Rugby Week treble follo-wing the WP u-13’s successfully defendingtheir u-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week title lastweek. The u-18 Coca-Cola Academy Week isdrawing to a close in Worcester this week.

But WP was tight on defense and counte-red well off the Blue Bulls’ kicks. Lombardand the Western Province backline wereslick and fluid in their play and they con-stantly kept the ball in their possession,

making it difficult for the Bulls to attack.

Dramatic finishThe Western Province 8th man delivered

a try for his team in the 37th minute, therebyextending his team’s lead to 15 points, follo-wed by Lombard’s conversion.

Western Province continued to press onrelentlessly and were awarded with a try asJade Fortune dotted down.

Then, the match heated up as the Bulls’Gerald Lowe was sin-binned, and DamianWillemse of WP followed hot on his heels.The Bulls were finally awarded a try as LukeFortuin scored, with only one minute left onthe clock.
