Thanks to the quick response from secu-rity personnel and the police, twoKuilsRiver teenage girls escaped harm fol-

lowing a burglary at their house.The incident occurred onTuesday 14 July.

The teenagers were at home in Botha Street,Mabille Park when two suspected burglarsentered the house – apparently through theroof.

The two men were caught by armed ADTsecurity officers and the local Kuils Riverpolice minutes after the girls pushed thepanic button, said Patrick Hall, communitydevelopment manager for ADT.

Hall, who was on his way to the police sta-tion that morning, was informed of the call-

out and decided to visit the house, which be-longs to a friend.

“I knew both parents work during the dayand their two daughters, aged 12 and 14,were home alone as it was school holidays.

“I told radio control theymust send a vehi-cle. My gut feeling said ‘go and have a look’.

“When I stopped outside the house I sawthe two children standing in the road,” Hallsaid in a shared message on his Facebookprofile.

Their armed response officer and themother of the two teenagers were also athome by then, he added.

“The front door was standing open. Thearmed response officer informed us he no-ticed themain bedroomdoorwas locked andit sounded as if someone was in the roof,”Hall said.

The group called for back-up but decidedto investigate themselves in the meantime.

“I told the officer he must go around theright hand side (of the house) and I wouldgo around the left hand side with my pepperspray in hand. As we got to the back of thehouse we noticed two men trying to escapefrom the outside domestic toilet door. Theywere making a run for the boundary wall.

“We stopped them in their tracks andwitha little shuffle and struggle we managed tohandcuff them and get them under control,”Hall explained.

The police arrived on the scene withinminutes and took both suspects into custo-dy. All of the stolen jewellery and other arti-cles the burglars had attempted to stealwereretrieved.

A community worker, mother to all, sis-ter and a shoulder to lean on.These accolades were bestowed on

Sylvia Henniker a well known communityworker, by friends and community mem-bers in Kuils River.Sylvia, a volunteer at the local police sta-

tion Victim Empowerment Programme(VEP), died on Wednesday 8 July.At her funeral on Saturday held at the Bet-

El School, Pastor Giovanni Coetzee, leader

of the church The Way, said it was a verysad day. “A sad day for all to lay to rest awoman who has been an inspiration,” hesaid.Sylvia joined the The Way 16 months ago.“She leaves behind a great gap, her legacy

will live on. Her children can be proud ofwhat she stood for and for what she did forthe community,” Giovanni said.Sylvia ran a Sunday school programme

from her house in Kalkfontein in which thechurch also assisted. “We will do our best tocontinue the work she did,” Giovanni said.Sylvia’s twin brother Louise Phooko paid

a moving tribute to his 54-year-old sister.“She still wanted to celebrate our birthdaytogether this year, but we never had the op-portunity.“Unfortunately our work is not God’s

work,” he said.He described his sister as someone who

never carried her sorrows on her face.“She always had a smile,” he said.He added: “Sylvia leaves behind a legacy

of hard work, of never standing back and al-ways helping people.”Captain Isaac van Niekerk, head of com-

munications at the Kuils River police sta-tion, worked with Sylvia for seven years.“I don’t think that it is a coincidence that

we are laying her to rest on this day, 18 July,

which is Mandela Day.“If Sylvia had been alive, she would have

attended to the needs of less fortunate chil-dren,” Isaac said.He described her as a pillar of strength for

crime victims whom she had counselled aspart of the police’s Victim EmpowermentProgramme.“Sylvia understood her role very clearly.

The work she did here, she did out of love.

Sheworkedveryhard andwas always obedi-ent and disciplined.“Shewaspassionate and someoneanyper-

son could work with,” Isaac said.He concluded: “Woman of strength, we sa-

lute you.”The words were reiterated by Pastor Lili-

an Coetzee who officiated the sermon.“I salute youmy sister. I love you. I always

have,” Lilian ended the sermon.

Die vergadering is gereël om kwessies ra-kende eie reg te bespreek en is gehou nadat’n 30-jarige man, ’n moordverdagte, eindeJunie glo deur gemeenskapslede in MountFletcherstraat, Kalkfontein met klippe be-stook envermoor is. “Vigilante-aanvalle ge-beur gewoonlik wanneer gemeenskappedink die owerhede bring nie hul kant nie,”meen Botha.

Kol. Pieter Galant, bevelvoerder van dieKuilsrivier-polisiekantoor, sê die polisie seplan is om te verhoed dat die optredes handuitruk.Hyhet tydensdie vergaderingverle-de Donderdagaand gesê die kwessie moet

gepak word met behulp van gemeenskap-strukture om te verhoed dat ’n soortgelykegeval soos die een in Junie herhaal word.

Botha, ’n voormalige lid van die polisie,meen egter die polisie moet sy hulpbronneverskerp, indien hy die euwel uitgeroei wilhê. Die polisie worstel tans met ’n tekortaan hulpbronne – patrollievoertuie en per-soneellede, meen Galant. “Mense raak keel-vol, maar hoe verhoed jy dat mense vigilan-te-bendes vorm?” het Galant gevra.

Alton Payne, voorsitter van die GPF, sêdie polisie en metropolisie moet nie alleendie probleem pak nie, “maar almal”.

Hy voeg by: “Die gemeenskap moet be-trokke raak by die voorkoming van mis-daad. Ons moet meer pro-aktief wees.”

Eugene de Vis, gemeenskapsontwikke-laar by die nie-regeringsorganisasie Badi-sa, sê die strukture om te help is wel in plek,maar dat die mense wat daarby betrokke isnie almal bevoeg is nie. “Ons het buurtwag-te, sektorforums en Bambanani, maar dieregte mense word nie aangestel nie.

En danksy die opening verledeweek van ’n splinternuwe sportveld daar,kan dié toekomstige sportsterre nou hulGodgegewe talent – sonder enige vrees virbendelede of geweld – slyp.

Die sportveld, geleë tussen Charlo- en Ro-wellanstraat, is Vrydag amptelik geopen.Dit sal dien as ’n sokker- en netbalveld waardie jeug kan oefen, sê Cynthia Claasen,wyksraadslid.

Claasen het Vrydag omstreeks 10:30 diesleutels tot die sportveld van sowat R500 000aan Jacky Hangan, ’n gemeenskapslid ennetbal-afrigter, oorhandig.

Ondanks gietende reën die oggend het dieseuns en meisies hulself geniet deur in ’nsokkerwedstryd en toe ’n netbalstryd me-kaar te pak.

“Jacky is eintlik die een wat alles aan diegang gesit het. Sy het die nood vir ’n sport-veld raakgesien en ons genader en versoekom die veld te bou waar kinders kan speel.

“Die stuk grond was eers ’n stortingster-rein,” vertel Cynthia.“Almal is baie opge-wonde oor die veld; hulle het belowe om dieveld te benut en daarna om te sien.”

Cynthia sê hopelik hou die sport die jong-span uit die kwaad, “weg van die bendes endie dwelms”.

Ivan Campher, superintendent oor pro-jekte vir die Stad Kaapstad in Distrik-Oos,sê die projek is in September verlede jaarbegin en twee weke gelede voltooi.

“Een ding wat vir ons uitstaan, is die ge-meenskap se waardering vir die projek.Hulle het bewys dat hulle daarna sal om-sien. As ’n mens ’n projek soos dit suksesvolwil afhandel, moet jy die gemeenskap be-trek. Ons het ook geldelike vergoeding be-skikbaar gestel vir die opsigter wat namensdie Stad daarna sal omsien,” sê Ivan, watal drie soortgelyke projekte in Wesbank vol-tooi het. Cecil Steyn, sakeman en eienaarvan CI Steyn in Epping, het toerusting,waaronder uniforms en sokker- en netbal-balle aan die jongspan geborg.

Selwyn Soudy, sokker-afrigter, sê hulle isbaie verlig oor die veld. “Dis iets wat diejeug se sporttalent sal slyp.”

On the coldest, wettest mor-ning the past week I noticedwhat I thought was a drunkold man in our warm waitingroom. He sat there, soakingwet, swinging from side toside, his head on his chest. The launch of Why did you take so longcomes shortly after Samantha and CallaHenn’s return from Johannesburg to attendthe SAMRO Wawela Music Awards wherethey were nominated alongside Blackbyrdand Mccully Workshop in the best South Af-rican duo/group category.Not bad for a group who have only been

producing original music since last year.Calla is one of four children and grew up

in a musical family. He performed with vari-ous original bands beforemeeting Samaboutfour years ago.Sam’s love affair with music started when

she took piano lessons in high school, but lifegot in thewayand she grewupand foundher-self with a day job.She was 23 when shemet Calla and the two

used to sing together at braais until he con-vinced her to join him on stage. She says theidea of being on stage with “all those people”looking at her was scary, but soon she wasworking through the day and singing atnight, until one day, she decided to focus onmusic.“I left my job and I haven’t been back

since.” That was three year ago, when Samand Call were known as Public Holiday.Within their first year together they won

a local battle of thebands competitionandgota contract to perform at a top hotel in Dubai.When they returned in June last year, they

decided it was time to focus on original mu-sic.

“I think it’s every musician’s dream to gettheir own music out there,” Sam says.They have since completed their album,

Hy het egter gekies om sy arm te behou,hoewel hy geen gevoel daarin en geen ge-bruik daarvan het nie.

Hoewel hy daagliks pyn ervaar enmedika-sie gebruikweens chroniese inflammasie, ishy nie ’n dag spyt oor sy besluit om sy armte behou nie.

“Dis asof jy jou jou arm in kookolie druk,só intens is die pyn. Maar dit kom in vlae,”vertel hy, terwyl hy tydens die onderhoudby sy huis in Amanda Glen eers die dooiearm se hand in sy heup stut, en dan weer insy broeksak druk.

StudiesHy was pas klaar met sy weermagoplei-

ding en ná sy studies in landbounavorsingaan die Pretoriase Technikon pas aangestelas assistent-wynmaker by Welmoed-keldersop die Stellenbossewynroete. Diéwynmaak-droom was vir eers aan skerwe.

“Ek was baie sportief – ek het goed rugbygespeel, geswem en geduik. Toe ek na viermaande uit die hospitaal by die huis kom,kon ek nie my skoenveters vasmaak nie. Ekhet gevoel ek het geen ‘purpose in life’ nie.

“Ekmoes besluit of ek in die veilige kokonvanmy gestremdheid gaan bly en of ek gaanaangaanmetmy lewe. Alles is ’n ‘hurdle’ omte ‘cross’. Elke keer as ek iets probeer buitedie norm vir mense soos ek, is daar die kansdat ek dit nie kan regkry nie en die emosio-

nele skade wat dit meebring.”Hy het toe begin werk as fotograaf, veral

as modefotograaf vir Topmod en later anderagentskappe.

“Ek moes als met een hand doen – die ka-mera vashou, zoom, fokus en afneem. Ditwas voor die dae van digitale kameras. Metmy een hand inmy broeksak gedruk, terwylekmet die ander foto’s neem, het mense dik-wels gedink ek is baie arrogant.”

By ’n troue het ’n omie hom eenkeer aan-gepraat en gesê hy moet tog net sy hand uitsy broeksak haal, vertel hy.

Hy het vir sowat agt jaar foto’s geneem,maar dit was later niemeer ’n uitdaging nie.

“Elke keer as ek iets nuuts aanpak, moetek eers kyk of ek dit kán doen.” Hy het onder

meer landbounavorsing gedoen vir Stellen-bosch Farmers Winery en toe dit nie meer’n uitdaging gebied het nie, sy eie onderne-ming in die wynbedryf begin.

Twee jaar gelede het ’n vriendin, DiederiOpperman-Lippstreu, dogter van die digterD.J.Opperman,homgevraom ’nbrons-bors-beeld van haar pa te maak.

Hy het op 20 jaar ’n bronsbeeld van ’n kindgemaak,maar dit was die borsbeeld vanD.J.Opperman wat hom laat besef het hy kán.

“Dit was ’n gesukkel, maar dit het my ver-troue gegee dat ek dit wél kan doen.”

BorsbeeldToe volg die borsbeeld van Hennie Bos-

man,wat onthul ismet die 50ste bestaansvie-

ringe van dié karateskool. Bosman se vuisteis oorgroot om die gevoel van sy krag as ka-rateman oor te dra.

Ná die borsbeeld van Opperman, wou hyeksperimenteer of hy beweging sou konweergee en het hy ’n diskusgooier geskep.

“Met elke beeld moet ek eers ’n staalraamsweis. Sonder ’n armmoet ek alles eers voor-af beplan en ‘uitdink’ van presies hoe ek ditgaan doen. Soms moet ek ’n voet inspan engoed met my tone vasknyp ... of met mymond.”

Nadat ’n kunstenaarsvriend, ConradTheys, die Opperman-beeld gesien het, is hybo ander bekende beeldhouers gekies om ’nbrons-borsbeeld van dr. Allan Boesak temaak.Ditwordop 11Augustus by ’nNGSen-dingkerk in Bellville-Suid onthul. Beslis ’nstempel van goedkeuring van sy talent!

Hy is nou besig met ’n reeks van drie beel-de om die tema van die mens se vraagstukoor die lewe te versinnebeeld. “In ’n stadiumraak ’n beeld vir my ’n persoon en dis ’n on-gelooflike gevoel om met ’n identiteit tewerk,” vertel hy.

“Sekere ‘disabilities’ sit meer in jou kop.Ek glo as jy iets eers in jou kop kan formu-leer, kan jy dit doen. Jou hand is net ’n ver-lenging van jou brein. Dis in jou brein datdie dinge gebeur.

“Daar is net een ding wat ek nie kan doennie en dis ‘push ups’. Dis eers as jy opgee,dat jy die stryd verloor, vertel hy.

Dis met hierdie geloof dat hy onlangs ook’nWilly’s Jeep van 1953 gerestoureer het. Hyhet die voertuig tweekeer uitmekaar gehaaltot hy tevrede was.

Hyhet ookkleiduif geskiet, radiobeheerdevliegtuie gebou en gevlieg, die pragtigehoutmeubels in sy voorhuis gemaak en ’nbarshou op die muurbalbaan gespeel.

Hy het beslis die pa’s wat destyds, toe hynog bymeisies vlerkgesleep het, gemeen hethy “gaan dit niemet een armmaaknie”, ver-keerd bewys.

Die Parow-korfbalklub is tans die enig-ste bestaande klub in Kaapstad en pro-beer nuwe lewe in dié sport blaas met

verskeie ope dae wat beplan word.Tans is daarongeveer 60 spelers indiehele

banville, die Bellville-brandweer, Parowval-lei en Epping, om slegs ’n paar plekke tenoem, hul eie korfbalklubs gehad.“Dit is juis die rede hoekom ons die ope

dae hou om weer die getalle van die sportop ’n aanvaarbare vlak te kry. Hoekom diegetalle oor die jare so drasties afgeneem het,bly ’n ope vraag,” verduidelik Tania Brase,van die Parow-korfbalklub.Daar word ook reeds aan planne geskaaf

om binnekort ’n beginnersliga vir o.9-seunsen -meisies te begin.Die baan is soortgelyk aan ’n netbalbaan,

maar die grootte en afmetings verskil. Daaris nege spelers in ’n span, drie in elke blok,

en die span bestaan uit drie doele, drie mid-delspelers en drie verdedigers.Die spelers in die onderskeie posisies mag

tydens die spel nie in ’n ander afdeling (blok)grond raak, op die binnelyne trap, of die baloor ’n binnelyn vang nie.Die bal word soos met netbal van speler

tot speler gegooi. Spelers mag nie die balteen hul lywe vang nie, daar mag nie gemik(ge-dummy) word nie en die speler het tweesekondes om die bal uit te gee. Alhoewel dievoetreëls nie so streng is soosmet netbal nie,mag die speler nie met die bal vorentoe ofagtertoe beweeg wanneer hy of sy beheerdaarvan het nie.

Doele word aangeteken deur van buite diedoelsirkel te doel en word “onder-arm” ge-gooi, met albei hande. ’n Doel tel twee punteas dit slaag, en die doel het vyf sekondes omte doel. ’n Strafdoel tel ’n punt.Die reëls is onlangs gewysig en ’n straf-

Danny Abrahams, remembered as oneof the best footballers in the countryduring the 1970s, will be sorely mis-

sed. He passed away in Ruyterwacht twoweeks ago at the age of 63.Hehad suffered fromAlzheimer’sDisease

for the past seven years and the cause of hisdeath is related to the disease.His career began in Elsies River

at the local St Augustine’s Club.It soon became apparent that he

was destined for greater things.As a player he will be remem-

bered as a genius who was bornwith the ability to stamp his au-thority on matches.With Cape Town Spurs he en-

thralled crowds and it was no sur-prise when he won the Federation Player ofthe Year Award in 1973.“My dad was a very loving and humble

man. I always had the feeling he caredmoreabout other people than about himself.“He was a real people’s person,” says his

son, Dean Abrahams.His long-time friend Ivan Jack, played

many games against him, also has fondmemories. “Dannywas born to play, he hadflair and a set of skills that made it reallydifficult to play against him.“We will also fondly remember Danny al-

so for the great family man and friend hewas off the pitch,” says Ivan.Ivan recalls when there were serious

talks of him going to play for Crystal Palaceto further his career, but his grandma fellill and he decided to rather take care of her.“He decided family was more important

than stardom,” says Ivan.Danny’s friends and former players start-

ed the Danny Abrahams Ex-Footballers Fund to help thosein need.“Danny was the start of the

fund, but we try and help asmany old soccer players finan-cially as we can.“The fund will continue to

grow in honour of Danny andwe will continue to help ourfriends who are struggling fi-

nancially,” said Jack.There will be a memorial service today

(Wednesday) at 19:00 at the Western CapeChristian Centre (Old Panorama Bioscope)in Elsies River.His funeral will be held on Saturday.V A grand dance will be held on Saturday
