The meeting follows a march in Bonte- heuwel led by provincial community safety minister Dan Plato to address residents on the combating and prevention of organised crime. Colonel Pieter Swart, visible police com- mander at Bishop Lavis police, says they are dealing with about six different ongoing con- flict situations between rival gangs in the community. “We are deploying our resources to moni- tor these conflicts, but with that the crime is then displaced in the process making it difficult to monitor all situations at once. “We are, however, on the ground daily to monitor and patrol these crime hotspots,” he said. Swart says since increasing visibility the atmosphere in certain crime hotspots has changed. “We notice when we are patrolling a hot- spot area where there is gang conflict, the conflict decreases and we will continue to be visible and in the faces of these gangsters,” he says. Graham Lindhorst, chairperson of the CPF, said that residents and the community leaders are all concerned about the ongoing gang violence, murders, attempted murders and armed robberies. “Since January up to now there has been 21 murders in the precinct and 17 of those murders occurred in Bonteheuwel. This is of great concern to us as many innocent peo- ple are coming into the line of fire and living in fear,” he says. Lindhorst said that in January the CPF, community leaders and Charl Kitching, who heads the City of Cape Town’s drug and gang units, held a meeting to discuss the way for- ward, clamping down on the crime in the community. “The plans are heeding results, but more needs to be done with regard to the serious violent crime and how we as community leaders can deal with it,” he said. Lindhorst said while there are figures available for how many murders have been committed, many people still do not report attempted murders as the fear they may be- come a target. “As leaders in this community we need to find a way to get people to trust the police and to report serious violent crimes so that we know exactly where to focus the resour- ces,” he urged. Kitching said although it is impossible for the unit to have operations every day, they have had many successes. “We receive a lot of information from the public which leads us to perpetrators of crime and have made several arrests. “We do not have the capacity to be every- where there is conflict but with our plans in place we are heeding good results,” he said. Kitching said so far they have conducted 32 operations in Bonteheuwel alone and will continue to monitor, patrol and work with the police in the community to help decrease conflict and crime. “We will continue to support the police, neighbourhood watches and the community policing forum as we go forward in execut- ing our operational plans,” he added. Last week Bonteheuwel residents, neighbourhood watch members and the police marched with provincial community safety minister Dan Plato to address residents on the combating and preven- tion of organised crime.

toor ingestaphet, washaar geduldklaar aandie dun kant.

it mismoedig voort. Ek kla

Urban upgradeunderwayBishop Lavis residents are urged to at-

tend an open day to comment, askquestions and table proposals on the

Urban Node Upgrade Study for the area. The open day will be hosted on Thursday

28 April by the City of Cape Town togetherwith various role players from the BishopLavis community. The Urban Node Upgrade forms part of

the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Pro-gramme and aims to optimise the existingland use patterns so that under-utilisedpublically owned land and facilities may beput to productive use in the interests of thelocal community. The focal point of the study is how best

to connect the town centre to the Lavistowntrain station. The study boundary of the project in-

cludes theBishopLavis sports field, the civ-ic, clinic and shopping nodes along LavisDrive, and the area between Lavis Stationand Koppiesdam Road. The City’s Mayco member for energy, en-

vironmental and spatial planning, council-lor Johan van der Merwe, says in line withthe City’s commitment to being an inclu-sive city, they plan to answer any questionsabout the proposed development optionsand to receive further input from the com-munity.“Over the last six months, various stake-

holders have been consulted to understandspatial issues and concerns in this develop-mental node. One of the strategic sugges-tions which came through was to create afresh identity for Bishop Lavis,” Van derMerwe says.He adds that they encourage residents to

attend the open day and contribute theirideas as it is crucial for them to get asmuchof their feedback as possible to ensure thatthe proposals respond to the local contextof the area accurately.Three proposals are currently being ex-

plored as possible options for the future de-velopment of the node. The professional team is in the process of

engaging with various line departments atthe City as well as the large land owners todetermine the feasibility of some of the pro-posals.The proposals include a more compact

sports ground with better facilities, addi-tional residential land, anda safer shoppingprecinct with a plaza.Other general proposals include mixed-

use sites along Lavis Drive and extendingthe clinic grounds to include the areaaround the Bishop Lavis Civic Centre. Thiswill create additional parking for residentsvisiting the clinic and will extend servicesto the rehabilitation centre. The open day will take place at the Civic

Centre Hall on Lavis Drive between 15:00and 19:00.Once comments have been received from

the open day, a final preferred option willbe taken through a more detailed designand legal process.Documents showing the preferred op-

tions will be open to the public for viewingat the Bishop Lavis Library.V Copies of the development proposals are availableat: http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/MediaReleases/Documents/BishopLavis1.jpg and http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/MediaReleases/Documents/BishopLavis2.jpg

The construction of the R12m Delft Ear-ly Childhood Development Centre ofExcellence has officially started with

a sod turning ceremony.TheCity of CapeTownMaycomember for

social development and early childhood de-velopment, councillor Suzette Little, start-ed the project officially on Monday 18 Aprilas she turned the sod. This project is scheduled for completion

in January 2017 andwill initially accommo-date 160 children in Phase 1, which can beextended to 400 in Phase 2 should the needarise. The facility on the corner of Cork Tree

and Sapele Road, Delft, will also boast itsown food garden which will supply the cen-tre with a variety of fresh produce. The cen-tre will also have a toy library as well as aneducational outdoor play area.Little further says that it is important for

the City to have the community participateto watch over the construction site as it will

be their children and grandchildren whowill benefit from the facility.“It is important to understand that this fa-

cility is about creating a foundation for ourchildren to learn and to be a placewhere thecommunity can come together and engagewith their children in the activities,” shesays. She further adds that the architects have

been very creative in their planning of thefacility as they have created opportunitiesfor those living around the facility to partic-ipate in the building of it.“I hope all will participate in what is go-

ing to be presented to them and that the endresult will be something everyone can en-joy,” Little says.Ward councillor Charles Esau says he

welcomes the project as it is a much neededfacility due to the population growth andthe lack of facilities available to residents.“Wewill continue to engagewith the com-

munity about who will manage the facilityand how the selections process will goahead, but up until now the project has alsobeen welcomed by the residents,” he says.

Councillor Suzette Little, Councillor Xolani Ndongeni and contractor Goolam Ahmed officiallystarted the construction of the R12m Delft ECD Centre of Excellence with a sod turningceremony.

Known as the “step children” of society, many individuals living with mental ill-nesses are often discriminated against, marginalised and abandoned by theirfamily members or caregivers because ofthe stigma surrounding mental condi-tions.But one indi-

vidual dedicat-ed her life andtime to thesemental healthclients at theLentegeur Hos-pital Rose Par-ent Project.Elsies River

passed away onFriday 1 April.She was a

well-known fig-ure in the El-sies River com-munity and hasgreatly influ-enced how individuals with a mental ill-ness are treated in her local neighbour-hood.Regardless of the negative association

and without hesitation, Claasen openedher home to more than 20 clients duringher time as a Rose Parent.

She also recruited many of her familymembers to become Rose Parents, as wellas her children. Her son, Esou Claasen, and daughter

Chrissy Francis are also Rose Parentsand collectively care for six patients.

The projecthas been in ex-istence formore than 27years and todate more than200 patientshave beenplaced withover 100 fami-lies in 14 sub-urbs aroundCape Town. There is no

other hospitalproject of thismagnitude thatis managed bythe communityand sustainedwithout any fi-nancial sup-port or compen-sation.The Rose

Parents are or-dinary individ-uals living in

the communityandhaveno special skills, but what they do have is the heart and ca-pacity to care for others. Mental healthclients in the care of the Rose Parents sel-dom require readmission to LentegeurHospital, and many have successfully re-kindled relationshipswith their families.

Pioneer of Rose Parents‘will not be forgotten’

The late Majorie Claasen, a pioneer of the RoseParent project, had been caring for psychiatricpatients since the inception of the project almost30 years ago.

Delft residents are urged tomake safety their priority asthere has been an increase in

certain crime categories. This comes after the Blue Downs

police cluster and neighbourhoodwatches in the community took tothe streets to engage with the com-munity in crime hotspot areas. The walkabout occurred on Sat-

urday 16 April.Acting station commander Colo-

nel LuyandaDamoyi says they sawit necessary that they take thewalkas there has been an increase incertain crime categories over the

last two weeks.“This walkabout is not only

about making people aware oftheir own safety, but to share withthem tips and information aboutcrime in the community and whatrole they play in making sure theylook after their own safety andproperty,” he says.“We take the streets back. We

walk where the crime is prevalent– especially gangsterism, hijack-ings and house robberies.”

Gates, doors unlockedThe walkabout started at Delft

Police Station where neighbour-hoodwatchmembers and police of-ficers were briefed on what they

may encounter and what to lookout for, but to engagewith the com-munity as well.“It was important for us to en-

gage with them as they we pickedupmany of the crimes reported aredue to negligence on the residents’part. We have found many gatesand doors unlocked which createthe opportunity for someone tobreak in,” Damoyi says.He adds the lack of not securing

or locking these gates contributedto an increase in house robberies.“During the walk we found that

people simply respond to a knockon the doorwith ‘come in’ and theywere shockedwhen they saw itwasthe police,” he says.He explains that the same hap-

pens when perpetrators pounce onhouses they intend to rob andtherefore requested that residentsbe more safety conscious. When it comes to hijackings,

Damoyi explains that alcohol playsa big role in people being negligentwith their cars, especially whentheyare leaving aparty andarenotcompletely at their wits.“Theymake themselves vulnera-

ble and create the opportunity tobecome a victim of hijacking. Al-ways be vigilant, no matter where. You do not know who is watchingand what they are capable of do-ing,” he says.During the walkabout which

lasted until about 04:00, the policeand neighbourhood watch person-nel stopped and searched severalsuspects along the route.Captain Joe Wilson, spokesper-

son of Delft police, says during theearly hours of the operation they

handed out safety pamphlets andfocussed on residents with safetygates which stood open and werenot locked.

Started running as the see policeEarlier the same day a 17-year-

old boywas arrested inDelft in pos-session of a prohibited firearm andammunition when officers appre-hended himas he tried to run awayfrom them. The suspect and three other peo-

sonof theDelft police, says the inci-dent occurred at about 01:00.

“The officers came across thesuspects who suddenly ran awaywhen they saw the police, but theofficers pursued the one they sawwith an object in his hand andmanaged to arrest him,” Wilsonsays. On Sunday at about 02:15 the

same groupwho ran away from po-lice was searched and a 38-year-oldman was arrested in Grieg Streetin Delft South after officers founda PPN .380 revolver and a 7.65mmmagazine and five rounds in hispossession.“The suspect will be charged for

“It is not about what you can’tdo, but rather what you areable to.”These are the wise words of

12-year-old Joel Greek fromKuils River who recently wonthe Lions Club’s InternationalEssay Contest. He was invited to New York

to accept his award.“I never thought I would find

myself in America of all placesand to have my writing get methere,” he says. What is truly special about

Joel that despite being partial-ly blind he never feels sorry forhimself or allows other to lookdown at him.“Mydisability does notmake

me who I am, but rather makesme feel unique and special. Ihave not let it get in my wayof my goals or dreams. It ispart of me, but it isn’t me,”he says.Joel attends the Althone School for the

Blind in Glenhaven where he is in Grade7, but wrote his winning essay under thetheme “Share Peace” while he was inGrade 6.“When I entered the competition, I

thought about the things that inspired meand how far we have come as South Afri-cans.“We have made bold moves and have

strived for greater things and all becausewe have hope andwe have a common goal, peace,” he says.Joel says his mother, Inge, plays a vital

role in the confidence he has built over theyears and she always pushes him to reachhis personal goals.“Mymom is amazing and so supportive;

there is not a day that goes by without hertelling me how proud she is of my accom-plishments and how proud she is of whatI am capable of. She is my inspiration,” he

says.Although he was in a mainstream

school about two years ago, Joel says en-rolling in the Athlone School for theBlind was a good decision as the schooloffers great support due to his eye sight.“I enjoyed mainstream school and it’s

not really different of where I am now, except for the fact that the school special-ises in supporting learners with visualimpairments,” he says.Joel hopes to one day become a great

historian or an herpetologist.“Many people do not know, but I love

animals – especially amphibians, whichinclude frogs, toads, snakes and lizards. That iswhy Iwould like to becomeaher-petologist, but who knows – anything ispossible.”Joel now joins a group of five past

grand prize winners from around theworld since the InternationalEssayCon-test began in 2010.

“When I was pregnant I alwaysknew that this was a great per-son I was carrying.”

These are thewords of a proudKuils Rivermother who recently accompanied her par-tially blind son to America where he re-ceived an award at the United Nations head-quarters in New York after winning the Li-on’s Club International 2015/2016 EssayContest – an opportunity she might neverhave experienced had it not been for herhard working son, the mother says.Inge Greek, a single mother of Iris Street

in Sarepta, Kuils River, is the mother of 12-year-old Joel Greek who has featured inmany newspaper articles following his tripto America.Joel, a Grade 7 learner at the Athlone

School for the Blind in Bellville South, en-tered his essay themed “Share Peace” intothe competition. His entry has since then opened many

doors and is continuing to do so, the mothersays. The partially blind boy, who has a passion

for history and astronomy, and his motherare now packing their bags for the Far Eastwhere he will once again be honoured at aconvention hosted by the Lion’s Club. Theywill be jetting off to Fukuoko, Japan, on 24June this year to attend the 99Annual Lion’sInternational Convention – something bothof them are looking forward to.“Neither of us flew in an aeroplane before

our trip to America. It was a first for bothof us,” Inge says excitingly.Asked about her son and what he is like,

Inge describedJoel as a veryproactive child, and someone who has always been hardworking.“He always had good rolemodels. He loves

history and to learn about people who hadto break free from their circumstances.“I always knew he himself is destined for

greatness ... I just did not know it would allhappen so soon,” Inge says. She says she hopes her son will some day

grow up to be his own per-son; to make his own mis-takes and learn from themand not repeat the mistakesmade by others.“He is not a perfect child

– no child is. But when Ithink about the troublesmost 12-year-olds cause, I re-gard myself as somewhatlucky,” she says.Inge says she hopes the

story of Joel will inspire oth-er teenagers to realise thatthey should rise above theircircumstances and pursuetheir goals, no matter whatchallenges theymayencoun-ter.“I hope that there will be

more cases like Joel’s. Thereare a lot of Joels out there,”she says smiling.

Joel’s mother saysshe ‘always knew’

Inge Greek, mother of Joel Greek, says she is extremely proudof her boy’s achievement and knows that one day he will besuccessful in whatever he decides to do with his life.

Just months after stepping outas a solo artist, BellvilleSouth’s Lauren-Lee Bock has

already successfully pulled off herfirst international performance. The pint-sized singer recently re-

turned from the United Kingdomwhere she managed to raise justover R100 000 for the victims of ahuge flood that devastated the En-glish community of Kendal latelast year.Lauren’s two charity concerts in

the Kendal Town Hall and LeisureCentre in March were the brain-child of her manager, David Gum-mers, after experiencing the effectsof the flood first hand. When he first suggested the

fundraising concert, Lauren’s firstresponse was: “Are you sure youcan pull this off?”

PlanningWith less than four months to

plan, David and Lauren arrangedsponsorship to fly Lauren and agroup of backing musicians to En-gland.They also put together an exten-

sive list of raffle prizes, includinga car anddonations to be auctionedoff at the concerts.Lauren was joined on stage by

Peter Booi, Winston Siljeur, RochêEuropa and Haydn Marc vanRheede.“I took our local music to Kend-

al,” Lauren says of her performan-ces, adding that as a proud SouthAfrican, itwas important for her to

represent her country well. Sheeven included Miriam Makeba’siconic “Pata Pata” as well as atrack from a more modern diva,Can Skylark, in her programme. One of the two English songs sheincluded was The Beatles’ “Let itBe”.“I made every single person in

the audience sing along.”Since TygerBurger last spoke to

Lauren in earlyDecember 2015, thepint-sized singer has been continu-ing her duties as the singer for theWinston Siljeur Project. She’s alsobeen working with vocal coachAmanda Luyt and says she’s no-

ticed a marked improvement inher voice.Earlier this year Lauren became

one of three artists chosen to be apart of Can Skylark’s The Motive. The initiative sees Can providingthree up-and-coming artists with aspringboard to take on the local in-dustry.Lauren, along with Earl Deetlefs

and Lesley Dicxon, took part in aseries of workshops presented bymusic industry professionals overthe course of six weeks that dealtwith subjects like publishing, branding, performance and songwriting.

The programmealso sawLaurendo a photoshoot for promotionalshots and later in the year they’llput on a full-scale production.“I’ve been learning so much; I

feel honoured to be a part of it.”The extra support comes at the

perfect time for Lauren, who hasjust quit her job as a teacher aftersigning a full-time contract withDavid to allow her to focus solelyon her music career, which is justas well, because the two alreadyhave a few goals in mind.Ultimately, Lauren wants to be-

come one of the country’s more es-tablished artists, but quickly adds:“I know it takes hard work.”She isn’t necessarily looking for

fame, but wants to be respected asa singer. “I want to be a versatilemusician.”

Hard workLauren’s hard work will start

with “a few decent collaborations”she’s planning for a big concert inOctober. She is also planning to re-lease her debut single by the end ofthe year.“What we’ve got planned is to

make a few waves in the city,” Da-vid says, coyly, refusing to spillany more beans about their con-cert plans. In the meantime, music fans can

catch her regular performancesaround Cape Town with the Win-ston Siljeur Project.V For more information about Lauren andto keep up to date with her music andshows, “Like” her Facebook page, followher on Twitter and @laurenleebock, or follow her on Instagram.

South Africa en Childline, het Wayde Vry-dag dié netwerk se Be a Buddy not a Bully-veldtog van stapel gestuur.

Fresh from her victory in the 5000m atthe South African Championship inStellenbosch on Friday, Irvette van Zyl

(Nedbank) cruised to victory in the SPARWomen’s 10km Challenge at the Cape TownStadium on Sunday morning, in a time of 33minutes 24 seconds. Teammate Rutendo Ny-ahora was second in 33.52, followed by Lebo-gang Phalula (Boxer) in 34 minutes.A smilingNyahora took the early lead, but

Van Zyl overtook her at about three kilome-tres, and never looked back. Van Zyl, whogave birth to a boy just seven months ago, looked relaxed as she ate up the kilometres.“I wasn’t planning to run fast,” she said.

“My coach told me not to go under 33:20, be-causehedidn’twantme too tired for theLon-don Marathon next Sunday.“I really didn’t expect to win, but every-

thingwentmyway today. My legs are feelingalive again, and I’m very happy at the mo-ment. I’m enjoying my running and I am en-joying motherhood.”Van Zyl was pregnant for much of 2015,

and before that had anumber of injuries, butshe appears to be in the form of her life. Ear-lier this year, she won the Two Oceans halfmarathon, and in fact has not been beatenin 2016.Nyahora said she also enjoyed the race.“Everything went according to plan,” she

said. “I ran a marathon last week, so I knewI would be tired, but I ran better than I ex-pected. Theweather was perfect for runningtoday.”Phalula, the reigning SPAR Grand Prix

champion, said she had also enjoyed therace, although she was tired after runningthe 1500m at the national championships onSaturday.Van Zyl leaves for London on Tuesday,

where she hopes to qualify for themarathon

in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro inAugust.“We’ll see what happens there,” she said.“If I don’t make it, I’ll try to qualify in one

of the track events.”Phalula is heading for Port Elizabeth,

where shewill run in the 1500 and 5000metreevents at the Night Series meeting on Tues-day, hoping to qualify for the Olympics. Hertwin sister, Diana-Lebo, missed the CapeTown race because she was running amara-thon in theNetherlands, also aiming to qual-ify for Rio.

A record entry of 27 532 runners took partin the 10km race and the 5km Fun Run.In a new innovation, the six women who

have won the SPAR Grand Prix are all men-toring promising junior runners.Rene Kalmer, who has won more Chal-

lenge titles than any other runner, said shewas happy to be mentoring a younger run-ner.“I chose Chery-Lee Schoeman, because

she is at the school I used to teach at, andbecause I thinkshehasagreat future. I thinkit is working well, and I predict great things

for her.”Chery-Lee, who was first junior home in

several 10km races last year, said she waslearning a lot from Kalmer.“We don’t actually train together, but she

is always ready to giveme advice and to helpme if I have a problem,” she said.TheCapeTownChallenge is the first in the

five-race SPARChallenge series. The secondrace is in Port Elizabeth on May 5, to be fol-lowed in June by the Durban race. The Pre-toria Challenge will be run in September, and the Johannesburg race in October.
