A recent computer scam has surfaced, and the public is urged to be vigilantwhen approached by such scams.Earlier this month TygerBurger re-

ceived a tip-off from one of its readerswho had come across a similar incident.Kraaifontein resident, Erika Vermeu-

len was contacted telephonically on 2January by an unidentified woman, ap-parently phoning fromoronbehalf of theMicrosoft company, reporting that hercomputer contained malicious ware. The woman, who according to Ver-

meulen was of Indian descent, priedabout various personal details and in-structed her to switch on her computer. After switching off her computer, it

was to the benefit ofVermeulen, whohadan inkling that the phone call was in factnot fromagenuineMicrosoft representa-tive.“She was very patient and I had to go

into ‘MyComputer’ andclickon ‘System’and some other things and it opened awindow showing some errors and warn-ings.”Vermeulenwas told that her computer

had been infected by a MalaysianBourne virus and was in a critical state.“(So), I told her that I have an anti-vi-

rus programme and she said that my an-ti-virus won’t detect this new virus andmy whole PC can crash at anymoment.”It was Vermeulen’s will to hang up the

phone, and her travel knowledge, whichled her to do her own research with thehelp of Google. She foundwebsites warn-ing of this scam that has been going onfor a few years.Apparently after running a pro-

gramme, chosen by the “rep” this willgive them full access to one’s computer, making personal information vulnera-ble.

Plan gaan informele sektor ordenJANA BEKKER

Dié informele handelsplan, tans in dieontwikkelingsfase, is ’n Stad Kaapstad-ini-siatief.

James Vos, De Grendel se subraadvoorsit-ter, sê dié verwikkeling volg omdat informe-le handelaars verspreid was oor dele vanPlattekloof, Edgemead en ander gebiede.

Bly of gly?

Hulle maak ’n lewe so.

. . moet hullebly of moet hulle gly?

Patrick Meyer: Diswel onwettig kanmense sê, maarhoe anders gaanhulle ’n inkomsteverdien.

The response to the Animal Anti-CrueltyLeague’s Christmas stocking appeal at theend of 2012 was a big success, thanks to peo-ple’s kind hearts.

Adoption staff of this animalwelfare organ-isation requested the public to donate toys, chews and treats for the shelter dogs and cats,as part of a project.

“As the public holidays are long and lonelyfor the animals andmany of themhave neverhad anything nice in their lives, the idea wasto give each animal a stocking with a toy anda treat. The idea originated from our adop-tions officerHelen Sadler’s daughter Caitlyn,

after she was involved in a Santa shoeboxproject at her school,” said Alma Schaap.

“We are delighted to report that the re-sponse was extremely positive. Not only didwe receive the toys and treats asked for, butmany other items such as food and collarsand leads. Many groups of friends and col-leagues stood together to raise funds andgather goods for us,” Alma and Helen said.

They thanked everyone involved, express-ing their heartfelt thanks for contributions, big or small.

“This year Christmas was special here,”Alma said.

Chronic diseases, also known as non-com-municable diseases, may be inherited, butmany lifestyle and environmental factorssuch as smoking, inappropriate diet, lackof exercise and heavy alcohol consumptionare known to significantly increase risks.

They can be prevented and controlledthrough lifestyle changes, a media releaseof the Western Cape Department of Health, reads.

Some of the most common chronic ill-nesses are hypertension (high blood pres-sure), diabetes and heart disease.

Due to the lack of initial symptoms, andbecause patients do not have regular, vol-untary health checks, many patients withchronic diseases seekhelp only once chron-ic diseases have reached an acute stage, orthe disease has long-term complications.

Treating an illness once it has reachedthis stage is not only expensive but also de-nies people the benefits of taking care oftheir condition at an early stage or prevent-ing further complications altogether.

The major associated risk factors forthese chronic diseases are high blood pres-sure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, andobesity.

An avid photographer was thor-oughly puzzled by a strange fishshe found on Milnerton beachrecently.Rika van Rensburg from

Brackenfell and her 11-year-oldgrandson Dagan happened onthis strange-looking fish duringan outing on 19 December.“The fish seemed to be strand-

ed in the shallow water and mygrandson helped it back to-wards deeper waters. It howev-er kept being washed back ontothe beach,” Rika said.“It was the first time I had

seen such a fish. At first Ithought it was a fish that hadbeen bitten in half but then I no-ticed the strange tail with thelittle fins,” she said adding thatthe total length of the fish wasabout 50 cm.The fish is a slender sunfish

(Ranzania laevis) which growsto a length of about 80 cm.In February 2011 several inci-

dents of these fish washing upalong the beaches of Blouberg,Melkbos and Noordhoek werereported to the Two OceansAquarium.Aquarium curator Michael

Farquhar then attributed theoccurrence to weather condi-tions.“The strong south-easterly

winds we have been experienc-

ing recently result in upwell-ings of icy cold water off ourwest coast. Slender sunfish area tropical species and prefertemperate conditions. The rea-son for them washing ashore isprobably because they aretrapped and cannot function inthe cold water,” Farquhar ex-plained in an article on theaquarium’s webpage. On Monday the aquarium’s

operations manager TinusBeukes confirmed this as a pos-sible reason for the recent inci-dents of washed up sunfish.“I have been with the aquari-

um for 17 years and last yearwas the first time I saw some-thing like this. This year wehave already seen three of thesesunfish wash up, one inside theharbour. The problem is thatthese species of sunfish schooltogether, so if you come acrossone on shore, it is not a goodsign.”Tinus added that a living

manta ray that washed up onthe beach in front of the re-search aquarium in Sea Pointlast week, could also be indica-tive of the effect of climatechange.“This is a tropical fish and

shouldn’t even be in these wa-ters,” he said.V Incidents of washed up sunfish canbe reported to Tinus Beukes via tbeu[email protected].

The response to the Animal Anti-CrueltyLeague’s Christmas stocking appeal at theend of 2012was a big success, thanks to peo-ple’s kind hearts.Adoption staff of this animal welfare or-

ganisation requested the public to donatetoys, chews and treats for the shelter dogsand cats, as part of a project.“As thepublicholidaysare longand lone-

ly for the animals and many of them havenever had anything nice in their lives, theidea was to give each animal a stockingwith a toy and a treat.“The idea originated from our adoptions

officer Helen Sadler’s daughter Caitlyn, af-ter she was involved in a Santa shoeboxproject at her school,” said Alma Schaap ofthe AACL.“We are delighted to report that the re-

sponse was extremely positive. Not onlydidwe receive the toys and treats asked for,but many other items such as food and col-lars and leads,” Alma and Helen said. They thanked everyone involved, ex-

pressing their heartfelt thanks for contri-butions, big or small.

‘Thanks for a great Xmas’
