I look at the stallions in North America today and I see real dirt pedigrees slipping away from us. WinStar remains focused on the Classics and striving to bring home stallions that excel at running around two turns and on the dirt.

SHEIKH FAHAD BUYS INTO ZOUSTAR Sheikh Fahad al Thani has purchased a share in theexciting Australian sprinter Zoustar (Aus) (NorthernMeteor {Aus}). Winner of the G1 Golden Rose S. at thebeginning of his 3-year-old campaign in September,Zoustar was purchased by Widden Stud just days

before his victory in theprestigious G1 CoolmoreStud S. during theMelbourne Cup Carnival.The remainder ofZoustar=s career isexpected to include threestarts in Australia,beginning with the G1 Canterbury S. atRandwick Mar. 15, beforea trip to Royal Ascot. He

is expected to retire to Widden Stud at the conclusionof his 3-year-old campaign. Trained by Chris Waller,Zoustar will race in the Qatar Bloodstock colors. Sheikh Fahad told ANZ Bloodstock News: "I was ableto inspect Zoustar with my bloodstock advisor DavidRedvers following his dominant win in the CoolmoreStud S. at Flemington. This colt represents everythingthat is great about Australian horses. He is strong,masculine and incredibly fast, and I am very excitedabout the prospects of him racing in Europe andultimately retiring to stud." Widden Stud=s Antony Thompson told Racing Post:"We would love to take [Zoustar] to England tocompete. He is the sort of horse that could run in eitherthe [G1 King's Stand or G1 Golden Jubilee S.], thoughwe could also try for both. Depending on what happensat Royal Ascot he could also have a tilt at the JulyCup.@ Sheikh Fahad recorded one of his first big-racevictories in the G1 Melbourne Cup in 2011 courtesy ofDunaden (Fr) (Nicobar {GB}), and he has since regularlytraveled horses to the country=s biggest races. Hewas cruising around there like it was abarely-getting-out-of-second-gear kind of thing.@ TheTucci Stables colorbearer set a Gulfstream Park trackrecord in his recent Harlan=s Holiday S. victory Dec. 22.AWhat an accomplishment, especially for us,@ Gonzalezsaid of the race.

AYou come here and win your first stakes atGulfstream and break the track record in style. He woneasily. You don=t often see a horse break a track recordwhile geared down. We were on Cloud 9 for a longtime. We still are, but you have to stay focused.@

Not a wise choice It's true that there's no guidebook when it comes tovoting for the Eclipse Awards, no rules of any kind. But there arehistorical precedents, dos and don'ts, and the voters have always paidclose attention to them. That is until Wise Dan came along. Bill Finley,ESPN.com.

SHE=S A TIGER, f, 2011

PEDIGREE INSIGHTS (cont. from p1) Judging by the voting for the Eclipse Award for topjuvenile filly, the vast majority didn=t agree with the

stewards= decision andShe=s a Tigermonopolized 212 of thevotes, with third-placedRia Antonia receivingonly 10. This seems toconfirm that the firstacross the line in theJuvenile Fillies has everychance of adding therelevant Eclipse Award.She=s a Tiger is the 14thconsecutive filly to do

so since Chilukki spoilt the sequence in 1999. Chilukkihad appeared to be beaten fair and square by Cash Runon that occasion, but Cash Run was gaining her firststakes victory, whereas Chilukki had blazed her way tosix consecutive wins, including a pair of Grade Is, andhad set or equalled a couple of track records. Perhaps She=s a Tiger also owed her Eclipse Award toher greater consistency. The daughter of Tale of theCat had been defeated in only two of her six starts,those defeats being by the narrow margins of half alength and a head. From a pedigree viewpoint, she is an appropriatewinner of the award. Her grandsire Storm Cat wasresponsible for Sweet Catomine and Storm Flag Flying,winners, respectively, in 2004 and 2002, and he alsosired the dam of Folklore (2005). She=s a Tiger=sbroodmare sire Cahill Road was a brother to Unbridled,the stallion responsible for the 2003 winner Halfbridled. She=s a Tiger=s dam Shandra Smiles must also take asizeable share of the credit, as she also produced a son,Smiling Tiger, who was good enough to win threeGrade Is and to finish third in two editions of the GIBreeders= Cup Sprint. The mare=s owner, Dr Rodney Orr,must be mightily thankful that Shandra Smiles RNA=d at$150,000 when she went through the Keeneland salesring in November 2010, while carrying She=s a Tiger.

Like She=s a Tiger, Smiling Tiger was sired by a sonof Storm Cat, but this son--Hold That Tiger--wasn=t oneof his most renowned stallion sons. Smiling Tiger andthe 2013 Grade II scorer Withgreatpleasure are amongonly a handful of graded winners sired by this winner ofthe G1 Grand Criterium. Unsurprisingly, Shandra Smiles= connections aresticking with this winning formula. Her 2013 filly is byTale of the Cat=s son Gio Ponti and she was bred toGiant=s Causeway, another son of Storm Cat, in 2013.She also has a non-winning 5-year-old daughter PureSmiles by another Storm Cat stallion in Pure Prize. She=s a Tiger isn=t the first Eclipse Award winner byTale of the Cat, as Gio Ponti took the 2009 and 2010awards for top turf male. His second to Zenyatta in the2009 GI Breeders= Cup Classic on all-weather was alsoenough to earn this tough horse the Eclipse Award forolder male. It is going to be interesting to see how important Taleof the Cat proves to be in extending the influence ofthe Storm Cat male line. His high-class son Lion Heartleft such talented performers as Dangerous Midge (GIBreeders= Cup Turf), Line of David (GI Arkansas Derby)and Kantharos before being sold to Turkey. In additionto Gio Ponti, Tale of the Cat is represented in Kentuckyby the very well-related Wood Memorial and Cigar Milewinner Tale of Ekati, whose first 2-year-olds race thisyear. cont. p7

Caulfield cont. Then there=s his speedy dual Grade II winner FortyTales, who starts his new career this year at SequelStallions New York, and the undefeated 20112-year-old Overdriven, who covered 110 mares in hisfirst season in Florida last year. Tale of the Cat=s daughter Layreebelle also got intothe act over the weekend, when her Bernardini fillySpellbound won the GII La Canada S. It is worthremembering that the best previous winner out of aTale of the Cat mare, the GI Acorn S. and GI CCA Oakswinner It=s Tricky, was also sired by a son of A.P. Indyin Mineshaft. Tale of the Cat is now a relative veteran at the age of20 and I note he covered Aonly@ 69 mares last year,after a comparatively quiet time with his 2012 runners(the best of whom were the Canadian Grade III winnerStars to Shine and the Japanese Group 2 winner A ShinTop). I=m sure he will be much more in demand thisyear, following a good 2013, which saw him finish ashigh as 13th on the general sires= list and secondamong the juvenile sires. In addition to She=s a Tiger, hewas ably represented at graded level by such as FortyTales (two Grade IIs and a Grade III), A Shin Top (Group2 and Group 3 successes in Japan), Stopchargingmaria(GII Demoiselle S. and GIII Tempted S.) and Tale of aChampion (GII Charles Whittingham Memorial). As She=s a Tiger=s broodmare sire Cahill Road was abrother to Unbridled, it is worth mentioning that Tale ofthe Cat has a pleasing record with daughters ofUnbridled=s Song, with this partnership producing theGrade II winners Alpha Kitten and A Shin Top. He alsosired the Grade II winner Spellbinder from anotherFappiano line mare. Cahill Road raised hopes that he might follow in theillustrious footsteps of his year-older brother Unbridledearly in his 3-year-old campaign, when he quickly built arecord of four wins from six starts. That sixth start sawhim win the GI Wood Memorial by three lengths, but heunfortunately came out of the race with a pulledsuspensory in his left-fore ankle and this signalled theend of his career. The 17-hands son of Fappiano retiredto stand alongside his brother at Gainesway Farm, buthe struggled to make his mark, to the extent that heended up in Washington state.

Coincidentally, it was at Emerald Downs inWashington that She=s a Tiger=s dam, theKentucky-bred Shandra Smiles, gained her only stakesvictory, over 6 1/2 furlongs. Bearing in mind the speed that She=s a Tiger showedin the Juvenile Fillies, a mile and a sixteenth could wellprove her limit--especially when her three-parts brotherSmiling Tiger gained two of his Grade I victories oversix furlongs and the other over seven. But then therewill still be plenty of opportunities for a high-class fillyof her type in America--especially as she has shown sheacts on dirt and synthetic.
