Fitter for her return fourth in the G1 Queen Anne S.at Royal Ascot June 18,she was allowed to setsteady splits under WilliamBuick here as Hughes sentSky Lantern to within alength and a half. Injectingwinning pace from thethree to the two-furlongpole, Elusive Kate driftedsteadily left as she bossedher larger rival, who evenreceived a blow across thenose with Buick=s stick inthe process. While therewas little doubt that she was holding the runner-up allthe way to the line, the inconvenience suffered by thevanquished would have seen the result reversed in themajority of racing nations other than this one. AShehung to her left and I ended up taking Richard with me,but she beat her fair and square,@ Buick protestedimmediately afterwards. AShe=s done it all her life andcosts herself a lot of ground by doing it, but she keepswinning and has never run a bad race. She=s anabsolute joy for a jockey to ride.@ Gosden added, AShealways drifts left and did it when she won the PrixMarcel Boussac. It=s a habit of hers and that=s probablywhy she likes Deauville so much, as she can pop ontothe left rail there.

She has a great turn of foot and caught them all at itcoming out of the >dip= and when they=ve drifted acrossthe track together, William has had the stick in his lefthand the whole way and there=s been no contact. She=sa great filly and made all like that against really goodfillies in France in the Prix Rothschild and loves to bowlalong. There is a ton of talent there, but [she] has runagainst the colts a lot and it=s nice to be back amongthe fillies. She=s tough and very powerful--she=s as wideas she is tall and you=d have to be thrilled with herattitude. We never had a spring this year and there areno good races for these fillies until Royal Ascot, whereshe could have run in the Duke of Cambridge and wonbut went for the Queen Anne. The races for her arefrom now on, and the [July 28] Prix Rothschild is anobvious one to go for and after that there are races likethe G1 Matron S. [at Leopardstown Sept. 7]. We mighteven want to go for a Breeders= Cup Mile later on.@ SkyLantern=s connections were taking events on the chinafterwards. AI=m waving the white flag, because theother horse is under my nose and there=s nothing I cando,@ Hughes told PA Sport. AShe got whipped in theface as well. It=s a shame, as she=s the one who has thebad habit and I=m the sufferer.@ Richard Hannon Jradded, AShe has run a good race and that=s racing. Thestewards= decision is not going to change--that=s lifeand we=ll have to come back and worry about winningthe next time. She=ll have a short break now, and thenwill come back for the Matron and then the Breeders=Cup Filly & Mare Turf.@

July Cup Preview cont. (from p1) Mike de Kock had warned before the Royal meetingthat Shea Shea might improve for the experience, andhe believes that is the case, with his only concern beingthe trip. AHe=s been great for us and South Africanbreeding, but this is a tough race.@ he said. AAt Ascot,we produced our horse at the right time, but it wasn=tto be. I=m pretty confident that five furlongs suits bestand it=s not an easy six furlongs either, plus he=s a hold-up horse who gets lazy in front so Christophe[Soumillon] is going to need nerve. We=ve come a longway not to try and he=s definitely got the ability.@ Twowho will relish this six furlongs are the June 22 G1Diamond Jubilee S. first and second Lethal Force (Ire)(Dark Angel {Ire}) and Society Rock (Ire) (Rock ofGibraltar {Ire}), with the former looking to confirm atwo-length beating in that race. Previously, AlanCraddock=s grey was a head second in receipt of fivepounds from Simon Gibson=s dual Group 1 winner inthe G2 Duke of York S. May 15, and it is hard topredict how the cards will fall this time. AI expressedbefore that he has really blossomed from three to fourand that is clearly visible in the standard ofperformance we have been able to see so far,@ trainerClive Cox explained. AHe improved markedly from thatgreat run in the Duke of York and we were on levelweights at Ascot, so we clearly upped our game a bitand he=s in similar form to that. In his work at home, heswitches off beautifully so we are not bound by anydecisions in that respect. Reading the horse=s bodylanguage and the way he has trained since he cameback from Ascot, I=m very confident.@ Aidan O=Brienbrought Mozart (Ire) here in 2001 and Michael Tabor,Derrick Smith and Susan Magnier=s Gale Force Ten (GB)(Oasis Dream {GB}) has an eerily similar profile to thathigh-class performer. Second in the G1 Irish 2000Guineas at The Curragh May 25, he went on to takethe G3 Jersey S. at Royal Ascot June 19, and histrainer is hoping for a repeat of history. AHe=s run oversix furlongs, it was seven at Ascot and he=s run over amile,@ he commented. AIt=s a big drop back, but it will beinteresting. He=s a bit in the Mozart mold, really. Mozartwas second in an Irish Guineas, just won the Jersey S.at Ascot and then came back here.@ Also dropping backin trip is Lawrie Inman=s Sovereign Debt (Ire) (DarkAngel {Ire}), having finished runner-up in Newbury=s G1 Lockinge S. THE FABRE FACTOR While the G1 Grand Prix de Paris has assumed manyguises throughout its longhistory, one recent constant hasbeen the domination of trainerAndre Fabre, and he seeks a 12threnewal in today=s Juddmonte-sponsored renewal with atalented trio. They include thehighly progressive Flintshire (GB)(Dansili {GB}), who carries thefamed pink-and-green of therace=s supporters as Rail Link (GB)did with success in 2006. Like that former stable star, the homebred captured the G3 Prix du Lys at ChantillyJune 16, and the authority that he stamped on thatcontest on relatively fast ground conditions suggestedhe could be destined for similar heights to hispredecessor. AHe=s stepping up in class, but we hope hecan keep progressing, as he was very impressive in thePrix du Lys last time,@ the owner-breeder=s RacingManager Teddy Grimthorpe told PA Sport. Joining himis Prince Faisal=s May 4 G2 Prix Greffulhe scorerOcovango (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), who was sufferingdefeat for the first time when fifth in the June 1 G1 Epsom Derby, and the unexposed June 14 ListedDerby du Languedoc winner Au Revoir (Ire) (Singspiel{Ire}), who races for Australia=s OTI Management. Thatoperation=s Terry Henderson said, AWe=re hopeful morethan confident with him, because the horse is jumpingup a long way in class from listed level to a Group 1.Andre Fabre is a very astute trainer and he wanted torun him, so he=s not just going around for the practice.@Aidan O=Brien has won this twice and relies on Battle ofMarengo (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who tries again at the toplevel after finishing fourth at Epsom and runner-up inthe G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot June 21. Thecheekpieces that were on for those outings are nowreplaced with blinkers, suggesting that the G2 Beresford S. and G2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trialwinner is beginning to frustrate his illustriousconnections. AHe=s in good form, everything is good,@the Ballydoyle conditioner said. AHe hasn=t done a lot[since Ascot], but we=re happy with him.@

TURF TRY FOR EMOLLIENT IN AMERICAN OAKS Juddmonte homebred Emollient (Empire Maker) shipscross-country and tries the turf in this evening=s GI American Oaks. The Bill Mott trainee has alternatedbetween losses and victories in her first seven starts, and is due for a win if that pattern continues. Shekicked off 2012 with a sloppy Gulfstream allowancescore in February, but finished fifth beaten 30 lengthswhen Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy) freaked in the Mar. 30 GII Gulfstream Park Oaks. Brought back just aweek later, Emollient looked like a different horse whenshe aired by nine lengths on the Polytrack inKeeneland=s GI Ashland S. Apr. 6. But the bay againdisappointed last time, finishing a distant sixth at 3-5 inPimlico=s GII Black-eyed Susan S. May 17. With twoturf works since her most recent try and plenty of solidEuropean stakes performers in her family, the goodEmollient appears likely to show up despite the changein scenery and surface. AShe ran so well on thesynthetic, we=re hoping there=s a correlation betweensynthetic and turf,@ trainer Bill Mott said. AHer two turfworks at Belmont Park were very good.@ Also headingwest is Emotional Kitten (Kitten=s Joy), who will look tofurther expand the empire of scalding-hot owners Kenand Sarah Ramsey. The Wesley Ward pupil got hernose down on the line to take a grassy Keenelandallowance Apr. 7 and annexed Pimlico=s Hilltop S. bythe same margin when last seen May 17. The localcontingent includes the top four and seventh-placefinishers from the nine-furlong GII Honeymoon H. June8. Wertheimer homebred Sarach (Arch) controlled thepace from the outset to post an 8-1 upset, whilefavored Scarlet Strike (Smart Strike) flew home fromdead last to complete the exacta.

Virginia Derby Preview (cont. from p1) The pace projects honest, if not breakneck, given thepresence of James W. Murphy S. hero Redwood Kitten(Kitten=s Joy) as well as War Dancer (War Front), whofigures as well. Charming Kitten should have everychance to turn the tables. A rallying third in the BlueGrass and ninth in the Kentucky Derby, the Ramseyhomebred was perhaps closer to the pace in the PennMile than he would have preferred, but closed off hisrace well, with a final quarter mile in :22.78, slightlybetter than Rydilluc and .01 slower than Jack Milton(War Front). The added real estate can work in his favortonight. Draw Two (Macho Uno) has maybe the mostupside of any runner in the field. A facile maiden winnerover yielding Belmont turf last Oct. 17, the grey wentmissing, but showed few signs of rust in his May 10

return, overcoming a slow start before running out aconvincing winner over recent Belmont allowancewinner Stormy Len (Harlan=s Holiday). He should bemotoring late and is the value play of the bunch.

FILLY LOOKS TO >TELL A GREAT STORY= Sagamore Farm homebred Tell a Great Story(Bluegrass Cat) hopes to do just that in today=s 1 1/16-mile GII Delaware Oaks for trainer IgnacioCorreas. The morning-line chalk has never been off theboard in her five lifetime starts, and most recently tookthe Go For the Wand S., the local prep, by a nose overIle St. Molly (Ile St. Louis {Chi}), Alli Leigh (StudentCouncil), and Broomsage (Include). Maracuya (BigBrown) was a debut winner at Gulfstream Mar. 6 andscored again in an optional claimer there Mar. 31,earning a 90 Beyer Speed Figure. The Ralph Nickstrainee was last seen finishing a well-beaten fourthafter setting the pace in the GII Black Eyed Susan atPimlico May 17. Makayla=s Angel (Sky Mesa) comesinto this off of back-to-back wins here. The DebbyOxley homebred took an allowance last out June 12.Tim Ritchey sends out Dancing Afleet (Afleet Alex) asboth trainer and owner along with Beverly Frazier. Thebay also boasts impressive back-to-back wins here, with a 7 3/4-length graduation June 13 and a 3 3/4-length score in an optional claimer June 24.

EIGHT LOOK TO SHINE IN A GLEAM An intriguing octet lines up for today=s GII A GleamH., a AWin and You=re In@ event for the GI Breeders= CupFilly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita in early November.Today=s test brings together the last two winners of theGI La Brea S., Teddy=s Promise (Salt Lake), the 2011victress, and Book Review (Giant=s Causeway), wholanded a moderately rated affair last December inArcadia. All things equal, if every rival fires their bestshot, Teddy=s Promise is your likeliest winner.Victorious in half of her 10 local appearances, the Cal-bred was just touched off by Rumor (Indian Charlie) inthe Mar. 10 GIII Las Flores S. at Santa Anita whengiving the Richard Mandella trainee five pounds, butbounced back with a career-best 99 Beyer in the five-furlong Time to Love S. at this venue May 5. Thehomebred found two spots of trouble in the DesertStormer H. June 16 and couldn=t quite get it done, missing by less than a length in third. She returns toher winning La Brea trip today. Book Review was up tobest Reneesgotzip (City Zip) by a neck in the >12 LaBrea, with champion My Miss Aurelia (Smart Strike)third, but was less successful at a route of ground, finishing second in the GII La Canada S. Jan. 20 and inthe GII Santa Maria S. Feb. 16. IN THE HEER AND NOW Placed in Group 1 company on his last two starts,Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s Aljamaaheer(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is afforded an opportunity to registera first pattern-race success in today=s G2 Summer Mileat Ascot. Third behind Farhh (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) inNewbury=s G1 Lockinge S. May 18, the chestnutfollowed that with a second to Declaration of War (WarFront) a month later in the G1 Queen Anne S. at theRoyal meeting. While those efforts suggest he will behard to beat here, he also has some reversals on hisrecord in lesser company, and trainer Roger Varian willbe hoping he can take advantage of a class-drop here.AAljamaaheer has improved with every run this seasonand put up a career best to be second in the QueenAnne last time out,@ he said. AHe has done everythingright at home since, and the trip and ground should suithim.@ Interestingly, Luca Cumani has opted to bringSheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum=s Afsare (GB)(Dubawi {Ire}) back in distance following his latestrunner-up finish to Mandour (Smart Strike) in the 10-furlong Gala S. at Sandown July 5. Last year=s GI Arlington Million second has not looked an obviouscandidate for this trip, and his biggest issue may behow he deals with the start, as he has developedproblems with the stalls. One of the darker types isGiuliano Manfredini=s Guest of Honour (Ire) (Cape Cross{Ire}), who had the subsequent dual listed scorerMontiridge (Ire) (Ramonti {Fr}) back in third whenimpressing on his black-type debut in the May 13 ListedRoyal Windsor S.

ROLL OUT THE SUPERLATIVES Newmarket=s July meeting is as much about earlypointers to next year=s Classics as it is about theestablished stars, and the G2 Superlative S. has thrownup several future luminaries including Dr Devious (Ire),Dubawi (Ire) and Horatio Nelson (Ire) (Danehill). Thisyear=s cast features the usual collection of unexposedwannabes, and one who fits that bill is Sheikh Hamdanbin Rashid Al Maktoum=s Washaar (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}),who was off the mark in convincing style for theRichard Hannon stable over this trip at Haydock June13. AWe have always liked Washaar, who is aloose-shouldered individual with a smooth action, andhe could not have been more impressive first time outat Haydock,@ his conditioner said. AIt was probably an ordinary maiden, but he wongoing away and the second has won since, so he isworth his place in this field.@ Another who comes hereon the back of a taking debut success is Godolphin=sOutstrip (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who finishedwith real effect after a slow start to beat his stablecompanion and subsequent impressive winner TrueStory (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) over this track and tripJune 22. DULLAHAN RETURNS IN ARLINGTON ‘CAP Dullahan (Even the Score) may have beaten juvenilechamp Hansen (Tapit) in the GI Blue Grass S. and topWest Coast handicapper Game on Dude (AwesomeAgain) in the GI Pacific Classic S. last year, but it hasbeen a while since the Donegal Racing colorbearer hasfound the winner=s circle and he will look to reversethat trend in today=s GIII Arlington H. After earning a111 Beyer Speed Figure when reeling in Game on Dudelast August, the chestnut checked in a disappointingfifth as the chalk in Belmont=s GI Jamaica H. inOctober. He was ninth in the GI Breeders= Cup Turf thefollowing month, and never threatened in either the G3 Burj Nahaar or G1 Dubai World Cup, both in Marchat Meydan. The half-brother to GI Kentucky Derby heroMine That Bird (Birdstone) shows an upbeat worktabover the Churchill main track since returning fromDubai, and will look to spearhead a better second halfof the year for 2012 Outstanding Trainer Dale Romans.Among Dullahan=s competition is Rahystrada (Rahy),winner of this in 2010, who bested today=s GI Man o=War S. favorite Boisterous (Distorted Humor) to takethis heat for the second time a year ago; Keep Up(Unbridled=s Song), an upsetter of Boisterous in lastterm=s GIII River City H. and recent victor of the saltySwoon=s Son S. here June 8; and Coalport (Kitten=sJoy), who has aired in back-to-back tries here againststate-breds.

WILL THE ‘GENERAL’ BE ‘ELECTED’? WinStar Farm=s General Election (Harlan=s Holiday)looks to remain unbeaten on the sod in today=s GIII American Derby at Arlington. The Apr. 20 GIII Lexington S. runner-up and Mar. 2 John BattagliaMemorial S. victor won his first grass attempt in theGIII Arlington Classic last out May 25. He scored an 89Beyer speed figure in that start, the second-highest inthe field, and is the second choice on the morning line.Ken and Sarah Ramsey colorbearer Admiral Kitten(Kitten=s Joy) is the morning-line favorite and hopes tobreak a three-race runner-up streak here. Boasting astrong turf pedigree, he has a stakes win and multiplegraded stakes placings on the grass. The Mike Makertrainee ran second to General Election in the ArlingtonClassic last out and took the place spot to Noble Tune(Unbridled=s Song) in the GII American Turf S. atChurchill May 3. The only time the bay was not first orsecond was in the Joe Battaglia, where he ran 11thafter stumbling at the start and being bumped.

Another Maker trainee, Moro Tap (Tapit), could be agood bet here at 10-1 on the morning line. Owned bySkychai Racing LLC, Sand Dollar Stable, T. Raymond, and J. TATTS JULY CONCLUDES WITH GAINSby Emma Berry Internationalism has been the theme of the week atTattersalls, and that continued through the final twosessions of the July Sale on Friday, with the day'sbestsellers moving on from Newmarket to Ireland, Qatarand America and contributing to a 47% increase inturnover from this time last year.

"The key to mixedsales of this type atTattersalls is thatthey consistentlyattract buyers fromall corners of theworld and theoverseas buyers, inparticular from Qatar, have made a hugeimpact," saidTattersalls ChairmanEdmond Mahony."The three lots which

sold for 200,000gns or more will all continue theirracing careers in Qatar, and buyers from more than 20countries have been active at Park Paddocks over thepast three days." Her brother Address Unknown (GB) may have been ahigh-profile late withdrawal from the sale, but No SuchZone (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 584) made her ownheadlines when topping thefinal day of trade at120,000gns. Richard Knightwas the successful bidder, buying on behalf of an Irishclient who is in the early stagesof compiling a broodmare band. "We've pinhooked foalstogether before and bought acouple of mares last December.Hopefully this will be a realfoundation mare," explainedKnight. "She will get acommercial cover with a viewto selling the offspring, thoughfillies might be kept to race. She has a great pedigree andwe are delighted to have her."

A granddaughter of Roberto's top producer SlightlyDangerous, whose offspring include the stallionsWarning (GB), Commander In Chief (GB) andDushyantor, the 2-year-old No Such Zone didn't racefor her breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah, having fracturedher pelvis in February. She sales price augmented a tallyof 739,000gns for the 39 horses sold from the draft ofJuddmonte, which topped the consignors' list.

Transatlantic Jumping Prospect... Zamoyski (GB) (lot 711), a 3-year-old gelding byDutch Art (GB), will eventually be heading stateside, having been bought for champion jumps owner Irvin SNaylor at 105,000gns towards the end of the sale.Buying through trainer Steve Gollings, Naylor purchasedthree potential jumpers throughout the sale for a totalof 164,000gns, with Mumeyez (GB) and Rottingdean(GB) joining dual winner Zamoyski in his string. "We tried to buy Durandearlier in the sale, but he wastoo expensive," said Gollings."I think this horse might havefetched more if he'd beenearlier in the sale, but I feelhe's value at that price.Plans for Zamoyski are fluid--he may go straight to theUnited States or he could stayin the UK for a while. He's sound and correct and that'simportant for horses racing on the firmer ground inAmerica."

Qatar Calls--Again... Footstepsinthesand (GB) colt Beach Club (GB) (lot618) is another to join the mass exodus from this saleto Qatar after being bought for 90,000gns by HussainAli Bukannen, taking his tally of purchases this week tosix. A winner over seven furlongs at Sandown lastweek, the 85-rated 3-year-old is a son of the unracedUnfuwain mare Dunya (GB), a half-sister to Group 3winner An Tadh (Ire) (Halling). Maxentius (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) (lot 652)brought the curtain down on a busy buying spell forQatar's champion trainer Gassim Ghazali, who took upresidence in the top right-hand corner of the sales ringat Tattersalls. From his lofty position, he amassed anequine troop of 18 horses to take home with him forthe grand sum of 920,000gns. Dual juvenile winnerMaxentius joined the list at 85,000gns, selected fromthe stable of Peter Chapple-Hyam.

Domestic Buyers Step In... Tom Malone jumped straight in with an opening bidof 50,000gns for Franciscan (GB) (Medicean {GB}) (lot684) and had to see off trainer David Elsworth to landthe 5-year-old for 60,000gns. Formerly trained by LucaCumani and bred by Fittocks Stud, which Cumani ownswith his wife Sara, the gelding has won five of his 22starts. His half-brother Forte Dei Marmi (GB) (Selkirk),trained by Roger Attfield, recently highlighted thefamily's durability with his victory in the GIII SingspielS. at Woodbine at the age of seven. Franciscan willnow head to the stable of leading northern jumpstrainer Donald McCain, along with the good-looking4-year-old Cool Sky (GB) (Millkom {GB}), bought earlierin the day for 42,000gns. The partnership of trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam andNed and Max Sangster's Invictus Racing has alreadyenjoyed a great run of success with Excelebration (Ire)=s half-brother Mull Of Killough (Ire), a treble stakeswinner at his local track Newmarket. The trio teamedup again to buy Captain Bertie (Ire) (Captain Rio {GB})(lot 548) for 50,000gns from the draft of Charlie Hills'Faringdon Place Stables. Chapple-Hyam will now primethe 95-rated miler for an autumn campaign. The final day ended with session gains in theaggregate, up by 27% at 1,874,400gns, and theaverage, which rose by 12% to 13,988gns. The medianincreased fractionally to 7,750gns from 7,500gns.Overall, the sale's turnover of 6,970,300gns improvedby 47% on the 2012 total, and was the highestaggregate at the July Sale since 2008. The median of8,000gns was up by 23% and the average of15,987gns by 35%. Only the clearance rate droppedslightly at 87%, compared to 89% last year. "This has been a very strong sale from start tofinish,@ said Edmond Mahony. AThe key indicators ofaverage, median and turnover are all significantly higherthan last year, and a clearance rate hovering around90% demonstrates the strength and depth at all levelsof the market.@ "An equally important feature of this year's July Salehas been a discernible feeling of cautious optimismreturning to the market. It would be wrong to attachtoo much significance to the vibrant trade this week, but as we start to look forward to the October YearlingSale, one can draw some encouragement from thesustained global demand we have experienced atTattersalls this week."

STALLION STARS PAST, PRESENT & FUTUREStory and Photos by Emma Berry Sandwiched between the morning sales session atTattersalls and racing on the July Course, one of themost eagerly anticipated features of 'July Week' inNewmarket is the Darley stallion parade. Invited guestswere this year treated to a procession of 15 of the

Darley sires, including thenewest recruit to the roster inKentucky for next season, the GIKentucky Derby and G1 DubaiWorld Cup hero, AnimalKingdom (Leroidesanimaux{Brz}). The statuesque chestnutlooked right at home in histemporary lodgings at DalhamHall Stud, from where he willtravel to Australia to begin hisfirst southern hemisphere seasonat Arrowfield Stud in the HunterValley before shuttling to DarleyAmerica at the end of the year.

Among those on paradeon Friday morning wereAustralia's championsire-elect, Exceed and Excel(Aus), plus the young duo ofNew Approach (Ire) andTeofilo (Ire), who betweenthem have provided thewinners of this season's G12000 Guineas, G1 EpsomOaks and G1 Irish Derby in Dawn Approach (Ire), Talent(GB) and Trading Leather (Ire).

Looking on from the wings in their permanentretirement home at Dalham Hall were the unbeatenDerby hero Lammtarra, now aged 21; Mark Of Esteem(Ire), 20, the 1996 2000 Guineas victor and sire ofDerby winner Sir Percy (GB), and the relatively youthful17-year-old six-time Group 1 winner Fantastic Light. As ever, the stallions looked fantastic and behavedimmaculately--a real credit to head stallion man KenCrozier and his team at Darley.

Timely Victory for Keeneland Grad Kate... The international visitors to Newmarket this weekincluded Keeneland's President and Chief ExecutiveOfficer Bill Thomason, accompanied by his wife Barbaraalong with Vice President of Sales Walt Robertson andhis wife Corky. The Keeneland team threw an enjoyablepaddock-side party at the July Course Friday, organizedby the company's European representative EdwardProsser, with the cosmopolitan guest list hailing from asfar afield as Australia, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Dubai andNew Zealand. Britain's champion trainer John Gosden dropped byfollowing the third Group 1 win for the TeruyaYoshida-owned Elusive Kate (Elusive Quality) in theday's feature race, the G1 Etihad Airways Falmouth S.,and it was an appropriate gathering at which to toasther success, the 4-year-old having been purchased atthe 2010 Keeneland September Sale by BlandfordBloodstock for $70,000.

A JULY JAUNTby Marie Kizenko The sun came out for Durban July Day, and what aday it turned out to be. With the Durban skyline as a

backdrop, acrowd upwardsof 50,000gathered atGreyville both inthe grandstandand theexpansive infieldmarquee area, and everythingseemedrefreshinglymanageable. The

fashion theme for the day was "Posh Oh My Gosh,"and there were some creative entries in the fancy dresscompetitions. Ladies were turned out stylishly in all ofthe colors of the rainbow, and bravely busted out theskyscraper heels despite some sticky footing in theinfield. The drinks queues moved along briskly, but, as to beexpected on a day that brings out betting novices, thetote tellers had some obstacles in getting all wagers inbefore the gates were sprung. Luckily, there was theoption to go with the bookmakers in front of thegrandstand. The stately parade ring at Greyville on the other sideof the grandstand was shown to perfection in the idyllicweather. Huge trees offered shade, while a Champagnebooth in the center continued the bubbly atmosphere. Itwas packed to the gills when the horses came out forthe Durban July, and it was quite a sight to see the 20entrants all on their toes prancing about to the throngswatching from the grandstand balconies. Many attendees wore an emblem with NelsonMandela's image, and there was a 67-second tribute to

the ailing leader ahead of thenational anthem. Tenor BonganiThembe sang the anthemaccompanied by a string quartet, but he was nearly drowned outby the crowd that was singingalong. All in all, it set the stagefor a dramatic renewal ofAfrica's biggest race, and it wasmagnificent to see the horsesfan out across the track whenset down for the drive. In theend, it was the determined

Heavy Metal who got his head down on the line.

Rider S'Manga Khumalo took his victorious mountback down the straight to the roar of the appreciativecrowd while the trophy presentation was being set up,criss-crossing from the grandstand side to the infield, and the cheers continued for the duration. As the winning connections made their way to themedia booth, the power went out briefly in that veryroom, but it proved no hindrance. Owner Chris VanNiekerk, trainer Sean Tarry and Khumalo graciouslyanswered questions in the dark, and continued to do soonce the lights came back on. Well done, everyone! Perhaps the biggest thrill last Saturday was seeingBeach Beauty put in a stunning rally in the G1 GardenProvince S., a 1600-meter event run under the lightsthat featured the deepest field of the card. The baymare is a steely competitor and would surely make herepresence felt on the world stage. For a pedigree junkie like myself, the mix of

bloodlines seen in SouthAfrican racing isfascinating. There areAmerican-born stallionssuch as Trippi and thefreshman Judpot makingan impact along with olderdescendants of Danzigand Gone West, all ofthem working with scionsof European and

Australian lines, and there is a smattering of SouthAmerican influence as well.

After the conclusion of the races, many stayed on forthe parties both in the grandstand boxes and the infield, and the fireworks display at the end of the night wasspectacular. I may have missed the Fourth of July backhome, but colorful rockets and flares inspire the ooohsand aaahs all over the world.

Into Africa… Going on safari has always featured prominently onmy bucket list, but not even I could predict that it

would surpass my wildestexpectations. Theinternational mediapacked into a pair ofcombi-vans and set outon a road trip north intothe wilds of KwaZuluNatal. After lunch on thebeautiful grounds atSummerhill Stud, wedrove up several hoursnorth to the SpringbokLodge on the NambitiGame Reserve. Wearrived in darkness, butthat turned out to be theperfect way to enter thetents. Well, though I say

tents, rest assured that they are raised on a woodenfloor and have all of the amenities, including a lovelysoaking tub, a heated bed and a secluded outdoorshower that simply must be experienced to be believed. And did I mention the decanter of sherry in each tent? Now that's camping, my style!

Sunday night saw a feast held before a crackling firewith a buffet of local favorites that included oxtail stewand venison with pap, a corn porridge, and the funcontinued well into the night with the swapping ofvarious racing tales from across the globe. One bravechap was even persuaded to jump the fire, althoughtruth be told there wasn't much arm-twisting. Despite the pinotage and shiraz samplings, we rosebefore dawn to climb into the Land Rovers and set outin search of the wild beasts. We drove just a fewhundred meters and saw several zebras grazingalongside some wildebeest. The sun was just peekingover the horizon when we saw several giraffes having ataste of the thorn trees, and I could not contain asqueal of delight at the sight. A little while later westopped as a herd of fiercely horned buffalo crossed theroad in front of our vehicle, and the rhinoceros madetheir appearance in due course. There were groups ofkudu, a type of antelope, to be seen along the way, andwe jokingly thanked our ranger, Greg, for getting all ofthe animals to oblige for photo ops. Little did we know, however, that he was saving the best for the last partof our morning excursion. A call came out on the radio that lions had beenspotted in a certain area, and we bumped along in

search of the king ofthe jungle. Andsuddenly, there wasone fully maned lion, just chilling in the highgolden grass primpingfor the cameras.Shutters clickedcontinuously, and hegot up and ambledaway from us a fewminutes later. We

followed, and he obliged us by taking up a spot on asmall bluff where he could keep a watchful eye both onour vehicle and the lioness a few hundred feet away. "A Whiskers cat is a happy cat," someone quipped. There were snickers all around, but Greg begged us tokeep quiet. After three beats of silence, though, heburst out laughing, and the lion looked over at the LandRover as though racing journalists just might make anice morning snack. It was at that point that my valiant iPhone batterygave out, but that made little difference to theexperience. Though everyone has seen these animals inzoos, it is another thing to behold them in in theirmajestic native habitat of endless grassy plain under afaultless blue sky. We went for another drive at duskand watched elephants cut a swathe through treeswhile coming surprisingly (read apprehensively) close tothe Land Rover.

All of the meals were included in Springbok's winterrate of R1,395 (approximately US$140), and theofferings were world-class cuisine. Monday's dinnerhighlight was a tender slice of kudu with a creamypeppercorn sauce, while Tuesday's pick was a perfectpork chop garnished with homemade apple sauce.Heaven! The remote location of the game reserve means thereis minimal ambient light, which allowed for exceptional

views of the starrysouthern sky. And withscarce phone signal, not tomention lack of internet, ensured that oneconnected to life's naturalrhythm instead. It's aswitch that wassurprisingly easy to make. As I said before, I hadbeen thrilled at theprospect of going onsafari, and now I cannotwait until the nextopportunity. To have theexperience coincide with agreat racing festival madeit all the more memorable. Many, many thanks to theGold Circle officials who

made it possible: Michel Nairac, Robert Mauvis andGraeme Hawkins.
