The 177 youngsters to have changed hands led to an 11% increase in turnover to i15,484,000. A slight decline in average, by 3.5% on last year=s opening session, saw the figure settle at i87,480, while the median also contracted marginally to i55,000 (from i57,000), a 3.5% decrease. With two horses set to race for BTR under theguidance of Newmarket trainers John Gosden and SirMichael Stoute, Warren added, AThis colt looks like hecould be a wonderful summer 2-year-old but withenough scope also to be a 3-year-old. The Legend Continues... Once again, it was Galileo (Ire) who dominatedproceedings in Kildare and the giant of Co. Tipperarywas responsible for four of the top nine colts includingthe leading light who headed the list at i425,000($577,471). Out of 2005 G1 Irish 1,000 Guineasheroine Saoire (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), hip 101 from

Cahermorris Stables selling onbehalf of Margaret Joycebecame the third representativeof that mare to enter thespotlight at this auction after herprevious progeny sold fori475,000 and i550,000 in2009 and 2010. The latter wasthe Coolmore acquisition namedRequisition (Ire) (Invincible Spirit{Ire}) and he annexed the ListedLoughbrown S. and was placedthird in the G3 Desmond S. lastseason. Buyer M V Magnier said,AHe had a lot going for him--hewas a lovely horse and we=ve

been lucky with this family.@ The other pair of sons ofthe Aheir apparent@ to make a splash were Oaks FarmStables= hip 8, a half-brother to the multiple Groupwinner and Group 1-placed Major Cadeaux (GB)(Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), who has now entered thestallion ranks, and Marlhill House Stud=s hip 135,whose dam is a full-sibling of the 2005 GI Garden CityBreeders= Cup heroine Luas Line (Ire) (Danehill). Theformer, who is also a half-brother to the listed scorerBeachfire (GB) (Indian Haven {GB}), was knocked downto Jehan Malberbe=s Form Bloodstock for i280,000($380,479), while the other was one of three high-profile purchases by Jamie McCalmont. Besides hisi250,000 purchase of this colt, whose dam is alsoclosely related to Godolphin=s stalwart middle-distanceand staying performer Lost In the Moment (Ire) (DanehillDancer {Ire}), he also secured two other colts fori280,000 apiece by Coolmore sires past and present.First among them was a member of the first crop of RipVan Winkle (Ire) from leading vendor Camas Park Stud.Hip 98 was one of the most notable pinhookingsuccesses of the day=s trading, having cost justi55,000 at Goffs November prior to his half-sister SignFrom Heaven (Ire) (Raven=s Pass) promoting his pagewith some smart form in Irish nurseries. The February-foaled bay is out of an unraced half-sister to the 1994G1 July Cup hero Owington (GB) (Green Desert) andbecomes the highest-priced offspring of his three-timeGroup 1 winning sire. Later on, McCalmont snapped uphip 190, a son of Montjeu (Ire) from the same draftwho is a half-brother to the classy Danehill Dancer (Ire)duo of Callwood Dancer (Ire) and Contredanse (Ire). Thenext lot into the ring, one of his sons who is the firstfoal out of the 2010 G3 Blue Wind S. winner and G1Pretty Polly S. third Akdarena (GB) (Hernando {Fr}) fromStaffordstown Stud, sold to Peter and Ross Doyle fori250,000.

Moments later, the same consignment were alsoresponsible for one of his daughters who cappedanother red-letter day for the colossus when selling toBlandford Bloodstock for i280,000. Hip 208, who is agranddaughter of the high-class Alouette (GB)(Darshaan {GB}), is therefore from the immediate familyof Alborada (GB) (Alzao) and all her talented throng.AIt=s a very hard family to get into and I don=t think shewas ridiculously expensive,@ Tom Goff explained.

Sheikh Mohammed Snags Dubawi Filly... Pat O=Kelly=s Kilcarn Stud offered five yearlings duringthe opening session, including the second-mostexpensive filly of the day (lot 176), a daughter ofDubawi out of Watership Crystal (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells).Knocked down to Dick O=Gorman on behalf of SheikhMohammed, who stands her sire at his Dalham HallStud in Newmarket, the filly was sold for i380,000($516,326) and joins the Dubawi colt out of 1000Guineas winner Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire})among the five yearlings bought for just over i1-millionfor the Dubaian ruler during the first day of the sale.Offered by Ballyhane Stud, Speciosa=s son (lot 129)represented a decent pinhooking success for Joe Foley, who bought him for 75,000gns at Tattersalls=December Foal Sale and sold him for i200,000($271,751). Kilcarn Stud also received i230,000 ($312,536) forthe Teofilo first foal of Quixotic (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), asister to Cheveley Park Stud stallion Virtual (GB) and a3/4-sister to Group 2-winning stallion Iceman (GB)(Polar Falcon). That colt (lot 77) was bought by HugoMerry, who explained, AHe=s been bought for Jim andFitri Hay, who had a nice winner with Scotland (Ger) atEpsom on Saturday. He=s a lovely quality horse and Dr.Hay and [racing manager] Alex Cole will decide whotrains him.@ Referring to the forthcoming October Sale atTattersalls, Merry added, APlenty of good horses alwayscome out of this sale and once again there=s a good mixof nice horses here and they could well end up lookinggood value by the end of next week.@ That may well be the case, but a number of buyerscommented on the strength of the grade throughoutthe first day, especially for fillies, with agent GrantPritchard-Gordon remarking, AIt feels like the old days.@

In Form Again... Form Bloodstock was responsible for last year=s Orbytopper when Jehan Malherbe signed for a Galileo colt ati800,000. The South African outfit was to the foreagain on Wednesday with the i280,000 ($380,479)purchase of lot 8, yet another son of Galileo. The OaksFarm Stables-consigned colt is a half-brother to thetalented miler Major Cadeaux (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux{GB}), an admirably tough performer for RichardHannon, whose best win came in the G2 Bet365 Mileat Sandown before his retirement to Terry Holdcroft=sBearstone Stud in 2010. Another half-sibling, BeachFire (GB) (Indian Haven {GB}), landed the ListedWolferton H. at Royal Ascot in the colours of PrincessHaya of Jordan and recently won over hurdles for JohnFerguson. A bid of i280,000 was also required to claim lot 71,a daughter of Invincible Spirit (Ire) offered by the IrishNational Stud from theirSadler=s Wells marePropaganda (Ire), adaughter of G1 PrixVermeille winner PearlyShells (GB) (Efisio {GB}).John Ferguson laid downa challenge to RossDoyle, who ultimatelyprevailed on behalf of anunnamed client. AShe=s a gorgeous filly--I thought she was a stand-outby a good stallion who keeps coming up with goodhorses year on year,@ Doyle said, adding that hispurchase will be trained by Richard Hannon. Ross and his father Peter are ever-busy buyers at theyearling sales, and among others on their list was aneye-catching grey daughter of freshman sire Zebedee(Ire), the G2 Flying Childers S. winner whom they alsobought as a yearling for 70,000gns at Tattersalls. Theywent to i100,000 ($135,886) to secure the filly (lot44), a half-sister to Baltic Knight (Ire) (Baltic King {GB}).

AWe bought the filly on spec by our old friendZebedee,@ said Doyle. AShe=s a good strong filly and agreat mover--who knows, could lightning strike twice?@ Another of this season=s first-season stallions inwhom the Doyles were involved at an early stage isPaco Boy (Ire) (Desert Style {GB}), who was selected atthe DBS Breeze-up Sale for 30,000gns. He went on towin 11 of his 24 starts, including three Group 1 races, and is now standing at Highclere Stud. The father-and-son team went to i190,000 ($258,183) for lot 176,the Paco Boy colt from the family of the Germanchampion Silvano (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}), now a leadinglight at Maine Chance Farms in South Africa.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?... Tinnakill House=s brother to young stallion and Group1 winner Casamento (Ire) (Shamardal), lot 177, is nowunder the ownership of Dr. Philip Brown, who hasMontjeu filly Prairie Ranger (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) intraining with Andrew Balding and who purchased thecolt for i260,000 ($353,289) through bloodstockagent Johnny McKeever after some rigorous study ofgenetics with Stephen Harrison. ADr Brown is very keen on pedigree research, and thiscolt scored very highly on [Stephen Harrison=s] geneticsystem,@ explained McKeever. AI then match that upwith what I like when I see the horses. Being a brotherto a Group 1 winner, there=s an extra element to thiscolt. If we were lucky enough to win a Group race withhim he could be a really nice stallion prospect.@ In addition to his celebrated full brother, lot 177 is ahalf-brother to Wana Doo (Grand Slam), the dam of topmiler and G1 Sussex S. winner Toronado (Ire) (HighChaparral {Ire}).

Big Good Bob... The merits of Irish National Stud-based sire Big BadBob (Ire) (Bob Back) have been trumpeted in thesepages by Bill Oppenheim, and Cristina Patino=shomebred stallion recorded another noteworthy successon Wednesday. His daughter out of the Desert King(Ire) mare Sovana (Ire) (lot 176), another of the CitadelStud dispersal, this time offered by Kildaragh Stud, soldfor i230,000 ($312,525) to become the mostexpensive yearling for her sire. The successful buyerwas the Niarchos family=s racing manager Alan Cooper, who confirmed that she is to race in the name of theirFlaxman Stables Ireland Ltd. AWe=re delighted to have gotten her,@ he commented.AShe comes from a very good breeder, the late Mr.Oldham, and will be trained by Jessie Harrington.@ Harrington has already enjoyed success with theoffspring of Big Bad Bob, having trained hisjoint-top-rated performer, Bible Belt (Ire), winner of theG3 Dance Design S. in 2011, and Bible Belt=s year-olderbrother Bob Le Beau (Ire), a listed winner who wastwice placed in Group 3 contests.

>Rip=-Roaring Success... Lot 98, a son of Coolmore freshman Rip Van Winkle(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), was another to have turned a goodprofit on his foal sales price, increasing in value fromi55,000 last November to i280,000 on Wednesdaywhen put back through the ring under the Camas ParkStud banner. Out of Sahara Sky (Ire) (Danehill), anunraced 3/4-sister to top sprinter Owington (GB) (GreenDesert), the colt is the most expensive yearling by hissire to date, the previous high of i240,000 havingbeen recorded at Arqana=s August Sale. Having alsopurchased this year=s G1 Phoenix S. winner Sudirman, who rates as probably the best of the sire=s progeny torace so far, he was in no mood for buckling despitepressure from David Redvers. Hip 219 is out of the theGraded-Stakes scorer Antoniette (Nicholas), making hima half-brother to the 2010 GI La Brea S. and 2011 GISanta Monica S. scorer Switch (Quiet American), whosold for $4.3 million to Moyglare Stud Farm inNovember. After revealing that he had been purchasedfor the same partnership as Sudirman, Warren said, AHewas very similar to him--I=m very keen on the sire.@

Doyles on the Boil... Peter and Ross Doyle were busy throughout thesession and, following early successes, were on themark at i280,000 when securing the Irish NationalStud=s daughter of Invincible Spirit (Ire). Hip 71, aMarch-foaled bay, is out of Propaganda (Ire) (Sadler=sWells) who is a winning daughter of the 2002 G1 PrixVermeille victress Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}) andwho cost 450,000 guineas herself as a TattersallsOctober yearling in 2005. Cross Traffic Out of Classic Picture... GoldMark Farm=s Cross Traffic (Unbridled=s Song),hero of the GI Whitney Invitational H. Aug. 3, sustained

a minor shin injury whena well-beaten seventh inlast Saturday=s GI JockeyClub Gold Cup at BelmontPark. The gray never gotinvolved after stumblingbadly at the start. AIt isvery unfortunate for thisto happen at this time ofthe year because this willprevent him fromcompeting in the GIBreeder=s Cup Classic,@

said Todd Quast, GoldMark Farm=s General Manager.AWe will bring him back to GoldMark to evaluate himand based on those findings make decisions regardinghis future.@ Trained by Todd Pletcher, the J “TDNRising Star” J was a heartbreaking second in boththe GIII Westchester S. and GI Met Mile H. earlier thisyear at Belmont.

Johnny V. to Ride Palace Malice in Classic... Dogwood Stable=s Palace Malice (Curlin), arespectable second while facing older horses for thefirst time in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup Sept. 28, willbe ridden by John Velazquez in the GI Breeders= CupClassic at Santa Anita Nov. 2, it was announced. TheGI Belmont S. hero=s regular rider Mike Smith hasalready agreed to partner Game On Dude (AwesomeAgain) in the big one. AMike Smith predictably willreunite with Game on Dude, probable Classic favorite, and his mount in five previous graded stakes victories,@Dogwood=s Cot Campbell said. AWe are sorry to losehim, as he has won the Belmont S. and the [GII] JimDandy, and was recently a good second on PalaceMalice in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park. But we are overjoyed to get another Hall of Fame riderin Johnny V. He=ll fit him like a glove.@

>Brujo= Earns Spot in Dirt Mile... Team Valor International and Richard Santulli=s Brujode Olleros (Wild Event--Hit Oil {Brz}, by Roy), a strongsecond with a wide trip in the GII Kelso H. at BelmontPark Sept. 28, will make his next start in the GIBreeders= Cup Dirt Mile. A Group 1 winner and trackrecord holder at a mile on dirt in Uruguay, the chestnutis trained by Rick Mettee. ALosing ground andmomentum took away from his closing punch, but hestill dug in very hard,@ Team Valor CEO Barry Irwincommented. AThis horse is legit and he proved it [in theKelso]. Great training job by Mr. Rick Mettee!@

Gyarmati Has >Reason= To Smile... Former jockey Leah Gyarmati has had a career-changing 2013 season courtesy of Treadway RacingStable=s Sweet Reason (Street Sense), and the yearcould get that much better when the bay goespostward as the one to beat in Saturday=s GI Frizette S.at Belmont Park. Bred by Brent and Beth Harris as a foal share withDarley, the bay, a half-sister toGSW & GISP Don=t Forget Gil(Kafwain) fetched $185,000 as aKeeneland September yearling lastfall, and did her early training atCrupi=s New Castle Farm beforeshipping to New York in earlyMay. The conditioner admits thather filly didn=t exactly set theworld on fire at first. AShe does everything you wanther to do, exactly the way youwant her to do it, but she wasn=t astandout,@ Gyarmati said in anational teleconference Tuesday. AShe does everythingyou ask her--nothing more, nothing less. I thought shewas a really good filly [early on] based on her attitudeand her temper, but she never really came out andshowed anything.@ Until her career debut, that is. Sweet Reason was entered for a 5 1/2-furlong testoriginally scheduled for the turf at Saratoga Aug. 9, butwas contested over a sloppy main track. AShe never really wowed you with her breezes in themorning, and between the owner and me, we thoughtthe turf might be something she=d be good at, and Alex[Solis], who worked her a couple of times, thought shewould handle it too,@ said Gyarmati, explaining therationale for entering the turf race. ABecause she didn=thave any breezes that would knock your socks off andbecause turf races are sometimes easier, that=s wherewe thought we=d try her and see what happens.@ Gyarmati had few instructions for Solis, other than tolet her make a run and >hopefully pick up a check.= Tosay she did more would be an understatement ofmonumental proportions. Sweet Reason was a remotelast and didn=t look to be getting over the groundwhatsoever for the opening three furlongs, butexploded approaching the stretch and whipped herrivals by better than a half-dozen lengths (video). Thatperformance earned her a place in the gate for theseven-furlong GI Spinaway S. Sept. 1, also on a rain-affected track. Sent off at odds of 5-2, Sweet Reasonfell well back in the opening quarter mile, but found herbest stride on the turn and powered home to score by 5 3/4 lengths(video). She=ll add an extra eighth of a mile for Saturday=sFrizette, but neither the prospect of a dry strip nor thestretchout in distance is of particular concern toGyarmati. Cont. p12

AI think she will be just as effective on a fast track,@she offered. AMaybe she isn=t the same horse on a drytrack, but I think she=ll handle it fine. I=m not at allconcerned about the trip. I feel very confident in thisfilly. Her numbers are very good and she gives you100%.@ In preparation for Saturday=s test, Sweet Reasonworked a bullet four furlongs in :47.89 over theBelmont main track. AShe went very easy around the turn--I think shewent :25 for the first quarter--then she came homereally well,@ Gyarmati explained. AI just wanted to gether running down the lane and get her to know thatwhen they get to the stretch, it=s time to start running.[Alex] just showed her the whip, and she knew hemeant it and she took off and galloped out really welltoo. It was probably one of the more impressive worksshe=s had for me, but she isn=t a morning glory.@ Gyarmati feels that Sweet Reason can earn a trip toCalifornia for the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillieswithout necessarily winning this weekend. AI=m not saying I=m going to beat everybody, but Iknow she=s going to give it her all,@ she commented.AThat=s all I can ask for, I think she=s as nice as anyoneelse.@ --Alan Carasso

Lucky Nine Thriving Down Under... Top Hong Kong sprinter Lucky Nine (Ire) (Dubawi{Ire}) is progressing nicely at the Werribee InternationalHorse Centre just outside of Melbourne as he preparesto launch a two-race Australian campaign in the A$1-

million G1 Manikato S. atMoonee Valley Oct. 25. The 6-year-old, last seen winning theG1 KrisFlyer International Sprintat Kranji May 19, was visited bytrainer Caspar Fownes. AI wentdown to see him over theweekend and I=m happy withhim, he=s doing very well downthere,@ he explained. AI can nowstart to get him race fit--the

horses there that he=ll be facing have been running soare already race fit. That has to be in their favour, sohopefully I can arrange for a barrier trial to be put on forhim, maybe on the Tuesday after he comes out ofquarantine--that=s what I=m working on. [Regular rider]Brett [Prebble] galloped him Monday morning and hewas pleased--he says the horse feels thicker under him.I=ve been sprinting him for a while now so he=s lookingmore muscular.@ Lucky Nine is programmed for a startin the G1 Patinack Farm Classic up the Flemingtonstraight 1200-meter course Nov. 9 following theManikato, where he could meet up with last Friday=s G1Moir S. victress Samaready (Aus) (More Than Ready).AThe filly that looks to be the main threat, Samaready, she won by four lengths the other day, so that=s good,it puts the focus on her,@ said Fownes. AThere=s atwo-week gap between the races and that=s ideal forhim. I=ll have him as fit as I can have him first upwithout taxing him and he=ll be there to run his race, then we=ll have him race hardened for the second race.@

NEW ZEALAND BANS ANABOLIC STEROIDSOfficials at New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR)have announced that the use of anabolic steroids onhorses in and out of competition will be banned, effective May 1, 2014. The new ban will apply tohorses over six months of age. The current rules ofracing in the country prohibit anabolic steroids onracedays only. There will be a zero-tolerance approachtaken on anabolic steroids, according the NZTR ChiefExecutive Greg Purcell. AWhile the use of anabolicsteroids has not been a major problem in New Zealand,it was important we take a clear and definitive positionin the interests of integrity and public perceptions ofthoroughbred racing in New Zealand,@ he commented.AThere=s no place for performance-enhancing drugs inour sport and this is testament to our commitment.@ Inconsidering the ban NZTR consulted with its VeterinaryAdvisor, the Equine Veterinary Association, Trainers=Association, Breeders= Association, New ZealandBloodstock, Harness Racing Trainers= and Drivers, andStandardbred Breeders and taken into account thatsome countries will ban anabolic steroids from birth toretirement. Last month, the Australian Racing Boardannounced its own ban on anabolic steroids, both inand out of competition.

SHEIKH MOHAMMED CALLS FOR INTERNALINQUIRY Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum hasdrafted in the former Head of the Metropolitan PoliceLord Stevens to conduct an internal inquiry in the wakeof this year=s scandals. The move comes in response tothe recent discovery of unlicensed veterinary productsat Darley=s Moorley Farm which serves as a base forendurance horses. While unrelated to the racing andbreeding side of the operation, the seizure of theproducts both on the premises and from a Dubai RoyalAir Wing Flight followed on the heels of the well-publicized Mahmood Al Zarooni anabolic steroid fiasco.Lord Stevens, who was prompted to lead theinvestigation by Princess Haya, said in a statement, AIhave been asked by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed tooversee an internal inquiry that will examineorganisational structures, internal communication andveterinary practices at all of the major components ofSheikh Mohammed=s equestrian properties andoperations, including Darley, Godolphin, Meydan andJanah, the equine flight company. We will look intoevents surrounding the seizures at Stansted andMoorley Farm, including the chain of custody for themedications in question and their intended purpose. Wewill also look beyond those specific events for awide-ranging assessment of veterinary procedures andpractices to determine whether they are in support ofhorse welfare and in keeping with all applicable lawsand regulations.
