ILLINOIS DERBY PURSE HALVED Officials atHawthorne Race Course applied for and received per-mission from the Illinois Racing Board to cut the pursefor the GII Illinois Derby in half, from $500,000 to$250,000. FIVE STAKES UPGRADED IN CANADA FOR 2011The graded stakes committee of The Jockey Club ofCanada has announced that there will be a total of 37graded events run across the country in 2011, up from35 in 2010. The five Grade I races remain unchanged,while the Connaught Cup S., a seven-furlong event onturf, has been bumped up to Grade II status from Grade III.
