FAST TIMES AT FASIG-TIPTON The under-tackshow for Fasig-Tipton=s Selected Two-Year-Olds inTraining took place under balmy conditions yesterday at

Calder. A colt by SkyMesa, hip 62, blazed aneighth in :09 4/5 while outtowards the center of thetrack; it was the fastesttime on the day (video). The dark bay, purchased byCleveland Wheeler for$100,000 at KeenelandSeptember, is the secondfoal from Canadian stakeswinner Secondary School. The swiftest quarter-milewas recorded by hip 135, apowerfully built son of Pul-pit who covered the dis-tance in :21 (video). Fromthe extended family ofValid Expectations, the

dark bay was acquired at Keeneland September for$100,000 by Hoby and Layna Kight, who will lead himover Tuesday. AThe important thing is that everyonecame home safe,@ said Walt Robertson, president of theauction company. AWe had 13 horses go in :10, and itwas a good, safe show.@ In previous years, Fasig-Tiptonconducted two under-tack shows, including a secondpreview Sunday, two days before the Tuesday sale. This year, however, Fasig-Tipton officials opted to havejust one under-tack show, and moved it to Friday. AWeall talked about it, and the bottom line is that it=s thebest thing for the horses,@ Robertson added. AThis willgive people plenty of time to look at the horses after[the breeze show]--three days, rather than one.@ Thedecision to have only one show was met with mixedemotions. AI liked it when the horses were here longer--that=s more time that I had to get out to see them,@ saidtrainer Rick Violette Jr., whose Florida string is stable atPalm Meadows. AI=m sure that it=s an effort to lessenthe stress on the horses, but I have the feeling thatthere=s going to be a lot of consignors who wish theyhad another chance to breeze after today.@ Click herefor all of the times from yesterday=s show, or go towww.fasigtipton.com.

S k y M e s aThe Sky Mesa 2-year-olds made quite an impression

at yesterday’s Under Tack Show of the Calder SelectedTwo-Year-Olds in Training Sale! The sale will be held onTuesday, February 26. The six catalogued Sky Mesayoungsters worked as follows:

• Hip # 62 had the best eighth mile work of the day ,going in :09.4. He’s a colt out of Secondary School, byHonor Grades, consigned by Cleveland Wheeler, agent. His dam was a stakes winner of $149,092. Video

• Hip # 89 worked an eighth mile in :10.2. She’s a fillyout of Swift Girl, by Unbridled consigned by BlazingMeadows Farm. She’s a half-sister to QUICK LITTLEMISS ($287,080) and her second dam is the gradedstakes winner GATHER THE CLAN (IRE). Video

• Hip # 112 worked an eighth mile in :10.3. He’s a coltout of Vivid Sunset, by Mt. Livermore, consigned byScanlon Training Center, agent. His dam is a Grade 2stakes performer who earned $243,842. Video

• Hip # 143 worked a quarter mile in :21.2 (The bestquarter was 21.0.). He’s a colt out of Bashful Charmer, byCapote consigned by Murray Smith, agent. His dam is astakes winner and is the dam of stakes winnerSATURDAY’S CHILD. Video

• Hip # 188 worked a quarter mile in :21.3. He’s a coltout of Dance Darling, by Devil’s Bag consigned by PaulSharp. His dam is a half-sister to MISNOMER andDARLING DANZIG. Video

• Hip # 222 worked an eighth mile in :10.0. He’s a coltout of Growth Stock, by Known Fact consigned by Don R.Graham. His stakes-placed dam is a half-sister toPRIVATE LAP, ON THE BUS, etc. Video

These works are even more remarkable when youconsider that half of Sky Mesa’s first crop winners were onall-weather tracks, and that they definitely seem to prefer togo two turns. In fact, his recent $100,000 stakes winnerSKY MYSTIC was going 1-1/16 m. on the all-weathersurface in California! Video Chart

TDN Feature PresentationGRADE 2 FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH S.

JOIN THE UNION IN 2008DIXIE UNION IS SIRE OF G3W GRASSHOPPER

AND FIERCE WIND (SET NEW STAKES RECORD)

GOLDEN GLOVEBy Lucas Marquardt From the bullpen to the roundpen, Rob Murphy Jr.has made a seamless transition from successful major-league hurler to successful owner and breeder. On

Sunday, Murphy=s M375 Thor-oughbreds, Inc. and partnersmay well witness a transitionof another kind; they will findout if their three-year-oldGolden Spikes (Seeking theGold) can move from promis-ing and smartly bred sopho-more to legitimate TripleCrown contender. Golden Spikes, a $250,000Keeneland September pur-chase by M375 on behalf ofMurphy and partners PabloSuarez and Paul Lo Duca, among others, won on debut

sprinting at Calder last July. He didn=t race again untilNovember, when he was a tired fifth in a first-levelallowance at that course Nov. 22. But a smart 3 1/4-length allowance victory Dec. 13 gave trainer MartyWolfson and Murphy enough confidence to try him ingraded company. Golden Spikes wasn=t disgraced in theGII Hutcheson S. at Gulfstream Jan. 5, running fourthof eight, beaten 7 3/4 lengths by Smooth Air.

The colt showed in his latest that routing might behis forte. Facing the well-backed Cool Coal Man(Mineshaft), another GII Fountain of Youth S. player, ina nine-furlong allowance in Hallandale Jan. 26, GoldenSpikes led into the stretch before relenting to the favor-ite by a length. Golden Spikes=s pedigree is an interesting mix ofstamina and sprint influences. His third dam, Surgery, isby the great Dr. Fager, while his second dam is theGrade I winner and topbroodmare Shared Interest(Pleasant Colony), who pro-duced the speedball Forestry(Storm Cat) and GI Breeders=Cup Juvenile Fillies heroineCash Run (Seeking the Gold).Golden Spikes=s dam, the A.P.Indy mare A.P. Interest, was awinner at seven furlongs. Sheis a half-sister to that talentedpair, making Golden Spikes a3/4 blood relative to CashRun. With that sort of pedi-gree, it=s clear that, with a win in the Fountain ofYouth, Murphy would have not only a Derby contenderon his hands, but an attractive stallion prospect, too.

A Longtime Fan... Before you think of Murphy, 48, as a neophyte toracing, just a retired ballplayer with some time andmoney to kill, think again. Murphy=s got the pedigreeand the past-performance lines to match up with mostplayers in the business. Born in Miami in 1960, Murphygrew up around racing. His mother=s father was a trackannouncer for 35 years. His mother was a chartcallerfor the Daily Racing Form. His father=s stepfather,Murphy said, was the jockey Fred Smith, who wasaboard La Troienne=s son Bimelech when that colt wonthe Preakness and Belmont in 1930. And Murphy=s ownfather maintained a sizable racing stable in SouthernFlorida.

Need more proof? Take Murphy=s nom de course,M375. When Murphy was in college at the Universityof Florida studying computer science, he created ahandicapping program he called Slew--named afterMurphy=s favorite horse. One day, waiting at a printer,he kept coming across printouts, which emerged fromthe printer upside down, that read M375. It took him afew minutes to realize the printouts were indeed his;M375 was, numerically speaking, Slew spelled back-wards. AI immediately named everything M375,@ saidMurphy. But at that point, it wasn=t horse racing nor computerscience on which Murphy chose to focus. It was base-ball. Or, more specifically, throwing one very hard witha great degree of accuracy. In 1985, after a few years in the minors, Murphybroke into the major leagues as a left-handed reliefpitcher. He spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, theBoston Red Sox, the Seattle Mariners, the HoustonAstros, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Florida Marlins. His second year in the league was his best, when heachieved a sparkling ERA of just 0.72 with the Reds. Bythe time he retired in 1995, he had thrown in some 623innings and recorded an ERA of 3.64. While he was playing ball, though, Murphy=s love ofracing never faded. Whenever the chance arose, hefollowed racing and even purchased a few horses hereand there. So when Murphy decided to hang up his glove afteran accomplished 10 years in the majors, it was nosurprise to anyone when he decided to get seriousabout horses. One of the first things he did was to goback and refine another program he had devised incollege, one that created a model of what makes asuccessful racehorse--sire performance, dam perfor-mance, etc.--that could be used in the selection of salesyearlings.

AAfter creating this model, I had to validate it bygoing through past sales results,@ Murphy remembered.AThe computer, looking at results from 1975 through1983, approved less than one percent of the horsesthat sold as yearlings. And of that approved group, 20percent became stakes winners, versus the industryaverage of about three percent.@ Murphy, convinced he was on to something, foundsome investors who believed in his approach. Andthough M375 has operated on a small scale in terms ofnumbers, it has achieved success on a national level. To date, M375's besthorse has been Platinum Ti-ara, whom M375 bred inpartnership with GeneMcLean and raced with sev-eral others. A foal of 1998,Platinum Tiara, by Cozzene, was just a half-length adriftof Caressing when second inthe GI Breeders= Cup Juve-nile Fillies in 2000. By thetime she was retired in2002, Platinum Tiara had earned over $600,000 andhad been on the board in 17 of 28 starts. Other stakes winners campaigned by M375 partner-ship includes Grade III winner Swing and Miss, stakeswinners Z. Flash Gun and Mary Murphy, and gradedperformer Diamond Studs. These days, Murphy says that M375 is primarily abreeding operation. AIf we breed a horse that fits all our criteria as itgrows in age and gets to yearling time, I will then lookto put it into a racing partnership,@ he said. ABut some-times we do go to the yearling sales looking to buy fora partnership.@ Focusing on quality over quantity, Murphy currentlyhas a broodmare band of just two: the aforementionedPlatinum Tiara and her dam, Michelle=s Monarch. ATen years ago, I had nine or 10 mares,@ Murphy said.AStud fees started to build up and I wasn=t happy withthat many mares, so we decided to scale down.@

The 17-year-old Michelle=s Monarch had a Gone Westcolt last year and is due soon carrying a Quiet Americanfoal. She=s booked to Storm Cat for 2008. Platinum Tiara, now 10, had an A.P. Indy colt lastterm. She is currently carrying a foal by Storm Cat andis slated to visit Unbridled=s Song this spring. Interestingly, Murphy has included another star base-ball player on several of his horses, all-star catcher PaulLo Duca. Lo Duca, who now plays for the WashingtonNationals, owns an interest in Golden Spikes, and wentinto a foal share agreement with Murphy in 2007 withthe two mares; Lo Duca purchased the seasons forQuiet American and Storm Cat. Murphy was first introduced to Lo Duca by yet an-other baseball player. Murphy explained, APaul has beenaround the racetrack ever since he was old enough toget into Turf Paradise. He had some horses with DougO=Neill a few years ago and has been involved withsome partnership groups. AWhen Paul played for the [Florida] Marlins, the third-base coach at the time was Jeff Cox, who is now withthe Chicago White Sox. Well, Coxie and I played to-gether in the minor leagues, and we both liked racing alot. We=d frequent the local establishments as we madeour way around the double >A= Eastern League back in>84, and we=ve been good friends ever since. So whenPaul got traded from the Dodgers to the Marlins, Coxiesaid >Murph, you=ve gotta meet Paul.= One day I was atthe Calder press box, we recognized each other, andwe=ve been great friends since. Amazingly, when weget together we almost never talk about baseball; wetalk about horse racing.@ And who knows? After this weekend, maybe the twoballplayers will be talking about the first Saturday inMay, courtesy of an appropriately named colt namedGolden Spikes.
