    LUKE 2:8-14 ( NRSV)

8 In that region there were shepherds livingin the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stoodbefore them, and the glory of the Lordshone around them, and they were terrified.10 But the angel said to them, "Do not beafraid; for see I am bringing you goodnews of great joy for all the people: 11 toyou is born this day in the city of David aSavior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.

12 This will be a sign for you: you will finda child wrapped in bands of cloth and lyingin a manger." 13 And suddenly there waswith the angel a multitude of the heavenlyhost, praising God and saying, 14 "Glory toGod in the highest heaven, and on earthpeace among those whom he favors!"

    6:00 p.m.

    LUKE 2:15-20 ( NRSV)

15 When the angels had left them and goneinto heaven, the shepherds said to one

another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem andsee this thing that has taken place, whichthe Lord has made known to us." 16 Sothey went with haste and found Mary andJoseph, and the child lying in the manger.17 When they saw this, they made knownwhat had been told them about this child;18 and all who heard it were amazed at

what the shepherds told them. 19 But Marytreasured all these words and ponderedthem in her heart. 20 The shepherdsreturned, glorifying and praising God forall they had heard and seen, as it had beentold them.

    Countdow n to 20 06!

We said on the last Sunday of October that we would work together, savetogether, sacrifice together and give togetherto put the $300,000 we borrowed from ourown savings to pay off the mortgage whichwe burned on the first Sunday of this month.

As of last Sunday, through your sacri-ficial giving over and above yourtithes, we have been able to raise$202,535.32.

We have only this Sunday, KwanzaaServices and Watch Meeting Services to raisethe balance, and to bring in the gifts. We arecounting down to 2006!

Our commitment was to raise an addi-tional $300,000 over and above tithes andofferings by December 31st. I committed togive an extra $3,000 ($1,000 each month). Many members have joined me in giving$1,000. Others have joined at all kinds of

levels. Some are giving $100 a week. Someare giving $100 a month. Some are givingwhatever they can give after giving theirtithes.

We have said for 30 years that wecannot all give the same thing; but we can allgive something! Together we can do it! Givetoday and give God the glory for the VICTO-RY that is ours through Jesus Christ.

    You can Help!

We need your help in fixing our con-fused and confusing "Medicare Laws!" OurCongresspersons have come home for the hol-idays, but our seniors need your help! OnJanuary 1, 2006, the new MedicarePrescription Drug plan goes into effect.Millions of senior citizens are in deep troubleas a result of this so-called "plan."

Already there are reports that manyseniors, especially low-income seniors, arehaving a hard time understanding the differentcoverage plans and making the best choicesamong the many options. UCC members whoare seniors or caregivers are encouraged toask members of our Health Ministry andmembers of Church-in-Society to find outwho in our community has the best informa-tion to help you navigate this system andmake the best choices.

You may also go to http://www.ucc-

takeaction.org/ctt.asp?u=2149192&l=113571to find a useful resource that might help younavigate the new plan.

The new Medicare drug law has sev-eral flaws which mostly protect the drug companies at the expense of seniors. It con-tains a coverage gap that will force seniors topay out-of-pocket expenses when drug costsexceed $2,250 per year. The Medicaid safetynet has been eliminated for people who arethe dual beneficiaries of Medicare andMedicaid.

The new law allows the drug compa-nies to decide independently which drugs to

drugs to cover, and also permits them tochange those decisions on a monthly basis. Also, the Medicare system is prevented underthe new law from negotiating with drug com-panies to get lower prices.

A bill that would reform this law hasbeen introduced. It is entitled Medicare Prescription Drug Savings and Choice Act of 2005 (H.R. 752/S. 345).

This new bill would establish a stan-dard drug coverage plan administered byMedicare that would help alleviate the currentconfusion. It would also mandate negotiatedprices for prescription drugs, producing sav-ings that could be used to fill the coveragegap and still save taxpayers money.

To send a message to your membersof Congress asking them to support H.R.752/S. 345, log on to http://www.ucctakeac-tion.org/ctt.asp?u=2149192&l=113663.

Once the clock strikes twelve on New Year's, many of the poorest, sickest, and oldest Americans face grave risk of los-

ing their life-saving medications. - Robert M. Hayes, president of the MedicareRights Center

Thank you for your advocacy effortsover this past year! Together, we have madea difference! Together; we CAN continue tomake a difference. We need your help! Youcan help. The question on this Christmas dayis WILL YOU?

    Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

"Especially in the day and age we live in the President of the United States needs tohave his constitutional powers unimpaired, if youwill, in terms of the conduct of national securitypolicy." These words, spoken by Vice PresidentDick Cheney, expose just how tyrannical, corruptand crazy this government is. This is seen espe-cially in light of President Bushs signing anorder over 2-1/2 years ago that allowed fordomestic wiretapping. Moreover, in a speechover a year after signing the executive order, hetold the American people:

"Now, by the way, any time you hear theUnited States government talking about wiretaps,it requires a wiretap requires a court order, the President said in a speech in Buffalo, N.Y.,on April 20, 2004, in which he discussed theenactment of the Patriot Act.

Nothing has changed, by the way, Bush continued in the speech. "When we're talk-ing about chasing down terrorists, we're talkingabout getting a court order before we do so. It'simportant for our fellow citizens to understand, when you think Patriot Act, constitutional guar-antees are in place when it comes to doing what is necessary to protect our homeland, because wevalue the Constitution.

It is evident that Bush and this adminis-tration continue to torture the people through liesand prescriptive policies. By doing so, Bush haswidened his tortuous policies to now include theAmerican people. Essentially, this wiretap exec-utive order will pave the way for programs likeCOINTELPRO to be reinstituted, and seek tothwart any dissenting voices or actions opposingthe policies of Bush and his cronies.

ADVENT BODY AND SOULWalkingIn most cities and towns the streets are

busier than the sidewalks. We want to getplaces in a hurry. While speeding along, though, we do not get to savor the sights andsounds and beauty of things along the way.Advent and Christmas get short-changed, whenwe try to cruise through them. We want tomove forward, but at a pace that prepares usfor the joy that comes at the end.

Walking consists of putting one foot infront of the other. It involves doing this manytimes. Some people even use a pedometer thatcounts the steps, as well as measuring the dis-tance traveled. It is an unrewarding and mean-ingless walk, though, if we simply walk in cir-cles. We need to go somewhere and see eithernew sights that refresh or old ones that arerestorative.

Advent is a journey toward God, theGod found in a little child in a manger and inthe man that child came to be. If we were toarrive at the stable after a car trip, we mightfeel, All right! Here we are! Show us what wecame for! However, if we come slowly, stepby step, we are more ready to see and feel thewonder of a new birth. Rather than saying,Oh, what a cute baby! we say nothing, butreach out to take and hold the precious littlebundle in our arms.

We need to walk gently upon the holyground of this season, our steps sure and steadybut quiet. We need to find our way amidst thenoisy crowd that bustles around us and discov-er the way that leads us into Gods presence.God awaits us. Seeing the little baby, we findone who will eventually walk alongside usthrough all the paths of our life.

    advent MEDITATION - 5

ADVENT BODY AND SOULRest In The LordChristmas is not just a day; it is a sea-

son. Advent leads up to this time, but theChristmas season continues on for twelve daysuntil the coming of Epiphany. It is good tohave these days as a time to relax and rejoice inwhat Christmas is really all about.

Physically and psychologically weneed times of rest and relaxation. We enjoy theinspiration of special music and services, theexcitement of opening gifts, and the intimacyof sharing a meal with loved ones. After all isover, though, we are due for some relaxation, when we can let down a bit.

There is a lot of difference, though, between resting and collapsing. The Psalmwriter did not say to collapse in the Lord butto rest in God. In the pre-Christmas season,we may have done good work and been cre-ative, but now is the time to sit back and enjoyreceiving what God and others have to offer.

The fact is that God has given us awonderful gift. We do not need to go after it oreven unwrap it. It comes wrapped in swad-dling clothes and Gods gift of Jesus is justwhat we need. Even if He was not on ourChristmas list, Jesus is one who will bring uslasting satisfaction. Felix Mendelssohn wrote inhis aria in Elijah, O rest in the Lord. Wait

patiently for Him, And He shall give thee thyhearts desires.

With Jesus, the Christ, we ourselvesare reborn, refreshed, rejuvenated. The newChristian year, which Advent began, is nowtruly at hand with new possibilities. Joy to theWorld! May Gods joy and rich presence befelt within you through all the days to come!

    ADVENT AGAIN!

Advent again, and our thoughts turn to Christmas; to the festal remembrance of the com-ing of the Christ. We give gifts to remember that God gave the greatest gift. God is thegift of God, for the only gift worth the giving is oneself. All gifts are signs of personallove or they are bribes. To give a gift with no love for the one to whom we give it is thegreatest lie.

The unmeant gift from the unloving heart is the cruelest deceit. God so loved the worldthat He gave His only son; and Jesus so loved us that He gave Himself for our salvation.People have only one real need. We can get along with good food, clothes and shelter, butwe cant get along without each other. In contrast, our Christmas gifts are meaningfultreasures, no matter how little we pay for them, if they are symbols of an honest love. Thenew mink coat to an unloved wife from an unloving husband is a poor gift indeed. Andthe dime store gift given with real affection is a treasure beyond price.

Truly, our Christmas gifts to each other are empty gestures, no matter how much we payfor them, if they are not sincere symbols of our love.

In the end, my only gift is myself. All other gifts are but signs of this gift of me. The giftof me must be made day by day in each encounter with a fellow person.

Keepin' t he Fait h in Africent ric Congregat ions UMOJA

Julia M. Speller uses the principles of Nguzo Saba as interpre- tative lenses to study three congregations that self-identify as Africentric - Trinity UCC, 1st African Presbyterian Church and Imani Temple Christian Fellowship. In the process, she takes these principles outside of their annual ritualistic format and recasts them as values that help bring faith and culture together in congregational life, forming the contours of an Africentic spirituality.

Philip BrewerPhilip has been a member for 7 years. I have felt Gods presence in my life before andduring this important journey with God. I have learned about myself. It has been a periodof purging and emergence of growth for me. Ive experienced a range of emotions from

joy unspeakable to extreme frustration and disappointment, sometimes during the sameday. I realize that God uses me in good times and challenging times. My prayer is, as Godhas led me through this period of growth that I will yield to His Will and purpose forme for the rest of my life. Favorite Scripture: Isaiah 54:17

Tony DarlingTony has been a member for 9 years. This has been an experience of ups and downs, laughter and tears, but through it all, a relationship that only God has given and man canttake away. [I have experienced] the pleasure of growing in God and in His Word Learning how to love God and myself Understanding my purpose and accepting will-ingly and faithfully the call to be a servant of God in the service of His people. This walk

has been about love, learning to love as God loves! Favorite Scripture: Psalm 150

    M. Michelle Day Michelle has been a member for 16 years. In thinking back over these monthsIve been reflecting on three aspects the people Ive visited, the people Ivewalked with and me. I feel blessed and humbled by the way that people welcomedus into their homes and shared their faith with us in such a personal way. I feeltruly blessed and special that I had two walking deacons who showed me love andpatience. I truly believe that God brought our class together because each personhas given me a lesson in life that I need to hold on to. I feel a different awarenessnow of how very important it is and will be for me to be more like a spiritual tur-

tle than a hare to be slow, intentional and steady in my prayer, devotion, medita-tion and worship. So now Im both excited about the prospect of serving at a deep-er level and unsure of whether I am ready. Favorite Scripture: Psalm 121, Psalm139

Karen D. JacksonKaren has been a member for 3 years. This walk has been just that, a walk. Some days have been on gravel, some on sand, some on mud, some on water Ihave noticed that Im not alone. He is with me. There were times when I felt Icouldnt [and] He reminded me that He could. When I was weak, His grace wassufficient and He was my strength. When I wanted to run, He was there letting meknow that greater is He that is in me I have learned that I am nothing withoutmy Father and worthless without the body of Christ. Favorite Scripture: TheBible

Jacqueline Lindsey Jacquie has been a member for 24 years. This journey of preparation, my Walk, has indeed transformed my entire way of being. I now understand what it reallymeans to worship Christ Jesus. Answering the call to serve the Lord as a deacon is

both an honor and privilege. My desires, that which I seek after are continuousgrowth in Christ Jesus and to serve Him within His Will, becoming Christ-like inall my ways. Favorite Scripture: John 3:16, Romans 5:1-5, Romans 8:1-6

Rodney L. Mumphery Rodney has been a member for 8 years. [Upon first being considered to serve asa deacon] my spirit was willing but not my flesh. Was I worthy enough to serve inthis capacity? As I began my walk, my feeling of inadequacy began to subsidethrough a profound realization of Christs worthiness. I am grateful to God, PastorWright, the DIT coordinators and my Walking Deacons for being patient with me.Serving in this capacity is an awesome privilege. To be used by the Comforter toprovide comfort for the people of God through the power of Christ is amazing.Favorite Scripture: II Corinthians 4

Stella ReidStella has been a member for 5 years. I had no idea when I began this walk how I would be tested. I know that Ive been made stronger I feel that this iswhat God has called me to do and [He] is equipping me through this walk and as Icontinue to show myself approved, every day, to be the best servant that I can be.I dont have to try to do it like anyone else. I just want to get up everyday and say,Here I am, Lord, use me in whatever way You choose, so that You get theglory. Favorite Scripture: Psalm 27

Amelia Jones StevensAmelia has been a member for 24 years. Without question, I have grown grownin ways that I had not expected. Gradually as I was going through, I realized thatmy reason for wanting to become a deacon was altruistic, based on my need togrieve. In the process, I realized that it was not about me, that God played the keyrole in my being where I possibly would have never gone The comfort andgrowth that I gained was derived from my being still, listening for Gods direc-tion, and being able, through His grace and mercy, to minister to others. Thank you [Lord] for this opportunity. Favorite Scripture: Psalm 27, Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Claude R. StevensClaude has been a member for 22 years. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be fulland to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things throughChrist which strengtheneth me. My walk is a journey for answers [that] I donthave with laughter and tears, with an inner calmness. Favorite Scripture:Philippians 4:4-9,11-13

Leamon G. TexasTex has been a member for 8 years. This process has been an emotional rollercoaster ride. I have laughed, sighed and, more than Id like to admit, cried. ThisWalk has utterly changed my life. I have come face to face with my ownstrengths and weaknesses alike. I have had to wrestle with the almighty Himself. Isuspect that this entire 15-month process is truly, and metaphorically speaking, theproverbial tip of the Christian iceberg. I will never forget my experience as a dea-con in training (DIT). Favorite Scripture: Matthew 6:25-34, Ephesians 6:10-18

Victoria Morgan ThomasVictoria has been a member for 6 years. What my walk has meant most to mehas been the revelation God has shown to me about myself and what it takes towalk in Christ. [It] has meant allowing God to reveal the strength He has given meto do His work. There were many days that my tears overtook me My tearswerent tears of sorrow but tears of compassion for Gods people. I thank God forevery teardrop I spilled, because with every drop, He sent back a blessing andhealed my brokenness. Favorite Scripture: II Corinthians 12:9-10
