reVelATIOn 7:4/9–17 (nIV) 4Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel.

9After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” 11All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 1saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!” 13Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?” 14I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and

he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. 16Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. 17For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

11:00 a.m.

PsAlm 27:7–14 (nrsV) 7Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me! 8“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!” Your face, Lord, do I seek. 9Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation! 10If my father and mother forsake me, the

Lord will take me up. 11Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. 1Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they are breathing out violence.

13I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

luke 12:13–21 (nIV) 13Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. 17He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’ ” 0 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded om you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ 1 “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

The GrOund TruTh!

In our denomination’s highly successful September launch

of The Ground Truth in 5 cities and 15 theaters, UCC churches and others drew between 50 and 700 people in events to view and discuss this important new film.

Many of these events included panels where churches linked with veterans organizations in their community for the first time.

The showing here at Trinity was on the 4th Friday in September. Members were overwhelmed by the testimonies of those who have lived through what you have heard Pastor Wright preach about.

Now you, as a member of Trinity and a proud member of the United Church of Christ, have a unique opportunity to support our troops and talk about the morality of the Iraq war with members of your church, friends and family members who do not belong to or attend services at Trinity by listening to the stories of veterans who were there.

Host a Ground Truth Gathering and order the DVD at http://groundtruthstore.seenon.com./?pa=ucc.

From October 4 - 11, thousands of Americans will gather across the country in churches, universities, community centers, town halls, coffee houses, and living rooms to screen The Ground Truth, a new video by Focus Features, giving the real stories of Iraq veterans. The UCC will receive $5 for every DVD ordered by JPANet members.

Why these dates?October 11 is the four-year anniversary of

the Congressional authorization of use of force against Iraq. Since the Iraq war has started, more than ,711 American soldiers have been killed, and IraqBodyCount.net reports at least 43,55 confirmed Iraqi civilian casualties. We now know that this war was based, at best, on faulty intelligence, and at worst, on outright lies. And yet, we, as people of faith, cannot stand idly by and say “I told you so.” We are compelled to act.

the solution to the immense need for housing re-construction in our area. We need your talents and your help!

Compassion Explosion will take place October 9 – November 11. It invites skilled, adult work teams from across the United Church of Christ to be part of a disaster recovery blitz during these two weeks. Congregations, associations, or conferences of the United Church of Christ are invited to register groups of 5 – 5 persons for either of these two weeks. We will be accepting registrations for up to 75 people each week, in addition to our already scheduled work teams. A modest participant fee will be charged to assist with lodging and other program-related expenses.

This exciting collaborative effort will rely heavily on the skills within each group. Licensed plumbers and electricians, roofers and persons with general construction skills are needed.

Domestic Violence is a pattern of physical, sexual, psychological, and/or economic abuse, threats, intimidation, isolation, or

coercion used by one person to exert power and control over another person in the context of a current or former dating, family, household, or caregiving relationship.

Domestic Violence is never “just a private family matter.” It affects our entire society.

Family violence costs the nation from 5 to 10 billion dollars annually in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters and foster care, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity.

80% of violent criminals report having witnessed violence in the home as children. Over 50% of all homeless women and children in this country are flee-ing domestic violence, thus contributing to the high rates of poverty. Social science research shows there is a strong connection between violence in the home and the way society normalizes violence in our local com-munities and on a global scale.

Domestic Violence is everyone’s business. “The ruin of a nation begins in the homes of its people.” (African Proverb)

If you or someone you know is in an abusive rela-tionship, help is available. Please contact the City of Chicago Domestic Violence Helpline at 877-TO END DV (877-863-6338) to receive information regarding all the domestic violence services, including shelters, legal assistance, and counseling available in the city and suburbs. Please visit the Clothesline Project in the upstairs Narthex after service today.

Try It!

Here, try some!” We may hear this at a party, from a hostess urging us to taste her new appetizers, or it may be

someone at a grocery store, hoping we’ll buy a new type of sauce. Often, we will try. In both cases, people expect that we will enjoy what they are offering, and we usually agree with them.

How about, “Try stewardship?” True, we often hear or see appeals for contributions of one kind or another. But how often do we believe that we will enjoy it? It is easy to think of the TV shows we will miss by helping in the food pantry, or how we cannot sleep in Sunday morning if we promised to usher at the early service.

But if we do try stewardship, we are likely to get a feeling of satisfaction that is much deeper than enjoyment. The look of gratitude from those we have helped is something that will give us a good feeling for a long time.

By Rev. Reginald Williams, Jr.

This week, executives at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. instituted wage caps and added more part-time positions. This was done clearly

in an effort to force out longer-term workers in order to make way for new employees. For those persons currently making a certain amount, wage caps will prevent them from ever getting a raise again in their career with Wal-Mart. Why would they do this? They are doing this because those who have worked for Wal-Mart for longer terms must be paid more than those who will be hired anew. Moreover, the addition of part-time workers means that Wal-Mart will not only have to pay lower wages, but also offer fewer benefits.

With Wal-Mart being the largest retailer in the world, this model of business is soon to be copied by other major retailers, because the largest sets the trends for the rest. Wal-Mart today will be Target tomorrow. Target tomorrow will be another entity on the next day.

The significant point to be made here is that Wal-Mart has further shown the lengths to which greed will take an organization and those who profit from that organization’s workers. Moreover, those who continue to shop at Wal-Mart clearly support this greed which is literally killing people.
