sound of chariots, and of horses, the sound of a great army, so that they said to one another, “The king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to fight against us.” 7 So they fled away in the twilight and abandoned their tents, their horses, and their donkeys leaving the camp just as it was, and fled for their lives. 8 When these leprous men had come to the edge of the camp, they went into a tent, ate and drank, carried off silver, gold, and clothing, and went and hid them. Then they came back, entered another tent, carried off things from it, and went and hid them. 9 Then they said to one another, “What we are doing is wrong. This is a day of good news; if we are silent and wait until the morning light, we will be found guilty; therefore let us go and tell the king’s household.”

6:00 p.m.JOHN 1:43–46 (NRSV)43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

7:30 a.m.JOHN 5:1–9B (NRSV)1 After this there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes. 3 In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5 One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a sabbath.

11:00 a.m.ii KiNGS 7:3–9 (NRSV)3 Now there were four leprous men outside the city gate, who said to one another, “Why should we sit here until we die? 4 If we say, “Let us enter the city,’ the famine is in the city, and we shall die there; but if we sit here, we shall also die. Therefore, let us desert to the Aramean camp; if they spare our lives, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.” 5 So they arose at twilight to go to the Aramean camp; but when they came to the edge of the Aramean camp, there was no one there at all. 6 For the Lord had caused the Aramean army to hear the

Happy New Year! I write you on the first Sunday of a New Year to wish you joy, to wish you God’s presence and to wish you God’s peace.

I do not make those wishes as “idle” wishes. I do not share my wish for you and for your family as a matter of routine.

I am telling you what I feel from the bottom of my heart and in the depths of my soul. I want each of you to come into a deeper relationship with the Lord in the year 2008. Your life will never be the same if my “wishes” come true.

The month of January 2008 not only brings in a New Year. It also brings in a flurry of activities in the congregation of Trinity United Church of Christ. We started off the year with the ordination of Reverend Reginald Williams. That service (for those of you who missed church last Sunday and who only come once a month) was this past Friday night, January 4th.

Please be sure to wish Reggie, Nikita and Nia congratulations and God’s speed as Reverend Williams begins this new phase of his ministry.

The month of January has us preparing for our Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr./Historically Black College Fair. Our Higher Education Corporation is busily preparing to serve the youth of our church and the youth of our city at this year’s Fair. You do not want to miss bringing your teenager to that Annual HBCU College Fair. A half-page ad in this bulletin will give you all of the details.

The month of January also marks the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. His actual birth date was January the 15th and during that week many different churches, synagogues, congregations, institutions and schools will be

observing the life and ministry of a man whose message changed this world.

The month of January brings around our Annual Married Couples Worship Service. It will be held this year on January the 18th. We encourage you to mark your calendars now and to be with us as a ministry couple comes in from out of town to be with us and to share with us the joy and the challenges of living out the covenant of marriage.

The month of January always brings around my Ordination Anniversary date. I was ordained on January 20, 1967. It has been a “wild ride” these past 41 years. It has also been an exciting journey where God’s surprises of “Fresh Grace” met (and continue to meet) me every morning.

The month of January also brings about our Annual Congregational Meeting. The congregation will meet this year on Ramah’s birthday, January 25th. It is a very special Annual Meeting for me in that it will be the last Annual Meeting of the Congregation over which I will be presiding as Senior Pastor.

As we start a New Year together, I write you as your Senior Pastor to thank you for last year. I write you to thank you for the many years that you have stood by me, walked with me and prayed for me.

I want you to know that I will be taking your prayer concerns seriously. Many of you turned in your “one thing” prayer concern on New Year’s Eve. Some of you brought them in today. I began to work my way through them this week and I ask for your prayers for me as we together continue to hold onto God’s unchanging hand.

Sincerely and respectfully yours,

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins,

our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed — even our own Black brothers and sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your name the praise forevermore.

= = = = = = = = = = =

TO ALL OuR ViSiTORS … To all who mourn and need comforting … To all who are friendless and want friendship … To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming and may God bless you.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the infant mortality rate in August 2007 was 6.79 deaths per

1,000. According to the Chicago Department of Public Health, the infant mortality rate in Chicago stood well above the national rate at 9.6 deaths per 1,000. Of course, if the nation catches a cold, then black folks have pneumonia. The highest rates of infant mortality in the city of Chicago are in five predominately black neighborhoods on the south and west sides: Grand Crossing, South Shore, Washington Park, West Englewood, and West Garfield Park. The infant mortality rates in these areas range from 19-25 per 1,000. That is more than three times the national average, and twice the city average. Conversely, some areas of the city, such as Edison Park, on the Northwest side, have so few infant deaths that its mortality rate was not able to be calculated.

Studies have shown that infant mortality is mostly about birth weight. However, due to lack of access to healthcare, as well as good nutrition, many families are at risk for the sting of infant mortality. In West Englewood, one of the 5 worst areas in the city, McDonald’s restaurants abound, while fresh food stores are lacking. The same resources should be made available in each and every neighborhood of this city.

This is an issue which we must all attack. We must push our policymakers for programs for health education, good stores for proper nutrition, and access to healthcare. However, we must also, in the words of our own Dr. Mary K. Palmore, avail ourselves of the appropriate services, when offered.

ThE RESuLTS OF A REdEEmEd LIFEGiViNG YOuR BeST

One winter, I spent Wednesday evenings teaching art classes to mentally handicapped adults. I planned a variety of art projects these young men and women could make and enjoy. One young man worked each week,

but never smiled or spoke. Andy had trouble working with his hands and seemed displeased with everything he made.

One evening, I taught candle making. Andy dropped in ice cubes and poured melted blue wax into the empty milk carton to make his candle. Once it cooled, Andy peeled off the cardboard. I lit the wick and watched Andy’s face light up!

He quickly blew the candle out and then cradled his masterpiece. Andy took it and gave it to his counselor. He beamed as he presented his gift. He had so little, but he gave away the best he had made.

I felt so humbled, for when I first learn to make things well, I want to keep them and hoard my workmanship. God gave us His best in giving us Jesus, God’s only Son. Jesus gave us his best in giving his life for us.

God gives us talents not to build ourselves up with pride, but so we will have something we value to share and give to others.
