MARK 8:34-38 (NRSV)

34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become myfollowers, let them deny themselves and takeup their cross and follow me. 35 For thosewho want to save their life will lose it, andthose who lose their life for my sake, and forthe sake of the gospel, will save it. 36 Forwhat will it profit them to gain the wholeworld and forfeit their life? 37 Indeed, whatcan they give in return for their life? 38 Thosewho are ashamed of me and of my words inthis adulterous and sinful generation, of themthe Son of Man will also be ashamed when hecomes in the glory of his Father with the holyangels."

YOUR CHURCH NEEDS YOU!

Last Sunday, January 23rd, was what theschool teachers would call a “Snow Day” foryour church. Less than half the members wereable to dig out of the snow dumped on usFriday and Saturday and to get to worship onSunday.

That means that less than half of the offeringswe need to do the work of ministry that Godhas called us to do were brought into theHouse of God last week. As I indicated in my“State of the Church” message during theAnnual Meeting of the congregation, wecannot sustain that kind of “hit” and carry outthe ministry that God has given us.

YYoouurr cchhuurrcchh nneeeeddss yyoouu to put in last Sunday’soffering and this Sunday’s offering today!YYoouurr cchhuurrcchh nneeeeddss yyoouu to keep the promisesthat you gave to God when it comes tostewardship. YYoouurr cchhuurrcchh nneeeeddss yyoouu to befaithful in order for the church to be whatChrist called it to be.

Can I count on you? Can God count on you?Can your church count on you? The largerquestion becomes: CCaann wwee bbee tthhee cchhuurrcchh tthhaattGGoodd ccaalllleedd uuss ttoo bbee?

In the words of the old African proverb: TThheeaannsswweerr iiss iinn yyoouurr hhaannddss!

What answer will you give God today?

Ministers for Economic and Social Justice (MRSEJ)

The Chicago chapter of the UCCBlack clergy caucus (MMRRSSEEJJ) invites all UCCClergy and Laity to Kenwood UCC onMonday evening, January 31, 2005 at 6 p.m. tohear from the executive staff of Advocateregarding a number of issues. MMRRSSEEJJ hasasked, as we normally do, to have a "check-in"with Advocate Health Care around specificquestions raised at the November 2004 MMRRSSEEJJmeeting.

It has been MMRRSSEEJJ's history to invitemission partners who impact our urban focusto meet, sometimes annually, and address aseries of questions and to help us to bepartners in ministry and mission.

MMRRSSEEJJ is the acronym for our BlackClergy Caucus in the United Church of Christ. It has a long and proud history which youshould know about. Members of thecongregation who have taken the Bible class,"Black and Christian," already know thesefacts.

Ministers For Racial, Social andEconomic Justice has a history of advocatingfor "the least of these." MMRRSSJJ (The Ministersfor Racial and Social Justice) was the fore-runner to the establishment of the CommissionFor Racial Justice of the United Church ofChrist (CCRRJJ) and was responsible for manythings in the progress of the UCC. Here are afew of them:

1. MMRRSSJJ produced the first national body inour denomination (CCRRJJ) which had a Blackexecutive and that led to having six executivedirectors, at one time, who were heads of UCCnational bodies (or instrumentalities) and who

were also "people of Color."2. The Ministers for Racial and SocialJustice (MMRRSSJJ) wrote the UCC PPaassttoorraall LLeetttteerroonn RRaacciissmm.

3. MMRRSSJJ Supported Civil Rights through Dr.Martin Luther King's SCLC and assisted ingetting Rev. Dr. Andrew Yong a UCC ministerappointed Execuive VP of SCLC.

4. MMRRSSJJ gave full support, staff time andnational educational team to the support ofreleasing of the Wilmington Ten. Ben Chavisbecame known because he was one of theWilmington Ten.

5. MMRRSSJJ organized the first successful floorfight at the General Synod of the UnitedChurch of Christ to replace an incumbentOfficer with the first African AmericanNational Elected Officer as National Secretaryof the UCC.

6. MMRRSSJJ assisted in writing the first call forthe UCC to be an Affirmative Action and EEOemployer.

7. MMRRSSJJ assisted in writing and getting overtwenty General Synod resolutions andpronouncements passed dealing with racial, criminal, environmental and economic justice.

8. MMRRSSJJ helped the Hispanic Causus toorganize through CCRRJJ and also helped it toreceive funding.

9. MMRRSSJJ helped to establish CCOORREEMM, TheCouncil On Racial and Ethnic Ministries of theUCC.

10. MMRRSSJJ helped to get the 17/76 Fund

established which was the first UCC NationalCapital Campaign to support the historic blackcolleges and universities related to the UnitedChurch of Christ.

11. MMRRSSJJ assisted in the restructuring of theUCC to insure that all racial and ethnic specialinterest groups were represented at all levels ofthe structre of the Board of Directors of theCovenanted Ministries.

12. MMRRSSJJ (in 1970) assisted in theestablishment of United Black Christians(UUBBCC), the black lay caucus of the UnitedChurch of Christ.

In keeping with Dr. King's shift to apush for economic justice, MMRRSSJJ changed itsname officially to MMRRSSEEJJ. MMRRSSEEJJ hasalways been a clergy organization that wasopen to all clergy/In-care students who decidedthat the goals and objectives of theorganization were in harmony with their ownfaith journies. It has been and remains theonly national clergy organization in the UCCand still is a multi-racial organization withmembership open to all UCC/Disciples ofChrist, Christian Church ministers who areseeking the causes of doing justice.

We look forward to a great gatheringof the faithful family of UCC folk on Monday,January 31, 2005, 6 p.m., at Kenwood UCC.Please come and spread the word that all areinvited.

Christmas 2004, East Africa and South Africawere also hit in a very bad way! In Somalia, the death toll was over 40,000 in the last newsitem I read. (A news item, incidentally, in anindependent media and not the corporatecontrolled media that only focuses on what bigbusiness and its owners say it can focus on.)

The effects of the tsunami caused theloss of life and property as far south as SouthAfrica (off the Indian ocean). Have you seenany news articles or television specialscovering that part of the black world?

Even in the face of such anoverwhelming human tragedy, racism stillrears its ugly head. Why no coverage ofSomalia? Why no pictures of the devastationthere? Why just the luxury Islands of Phuletand Phi Phi? Black Africans were wiped outjust as instantly as Asians in Thailand andIndonesia, but black African deaths are notnewsworthy. Otherwise, we would be keptabreast of the black African deaths caused bythe genocide in Darfur and Sudan.

The massacres and the genocide inRwanda would not have happened had themedia kept the images before the world; but Idigress. Below is information from ourdenomination as to how you can help bringrelief to those families who were hit by thetsunami.

Pastor Jeremiah A Wright, Jr.

Dear JPANet Member,

On December 26th, 12 Southeast Asian andAfrican countries were hit with one of the

worst natural disasters in history. The tsunamithat was caused by an earthquake off the coastof Indonesia has leveled whole communitiesacross Southeast Asia. Thus far, over 500,000have been seriously injured and millions arehomeless. More than 150,000 have died, withthe toll expected to rise. The devastationcaused by the tsunami has in many waysexacerbated longstanding economic and socialchallenges in the region. It is another soberingreminder of the importance of our ongoingadvocacy for fair and just U.S. policythroughout the world, particularly as it affectsthose on the margins of the global economy.

In response to these horrific events, the UnitedChurch of Christ has created a Tsunami ReliefFund in order to help support the relief andrecovery work being organized by ChurchWorld Service and other UCC global partners. The UCC has announced a goal to raise$800,000 for relief and rehabilitation efforts.Initial support of $93,000 came from the OneGreat Hour of Sharing offering. For thosestill wondering how you can help, pleaseconsider doing one of the following:

1. Make a gift payable to your UCCcongregation, marked for "Tsunami Relief" inthe memo portion, to be sent to yourConference Office for recording andforwarding on to Wider Church Ministries.

2. Send direct gifts payable to Wider ChurchMinistries, marked in the memo portion "AsiaTsunami Relief," and send to Wider ChurchMinistries, 700 Prospect Avenue, Cleveland,OH 44115.

3. Make a secure on-line donation now byvisiting:

Remember to keep the millions of peopleimpacted by this tragedy in your prayers andkeep your eyes open for upcoming JPANetweekly actions as the 109th Congress sets tobegin its work.

Thank you for your help!

On January 24th, the “Oprah Show” did aspecial on the suffering of the tsunami and onthe suffering of Black women (and men) in theDemocratic Republic of the Congo. Rape isused as the weapon of choice against Blackwomen in the Congo! 4 million have died inthe Congo just as over 1 million were killed inRwanda.

The world at large has ignored Rwanda just asit is ignoring genocide taking place in theSudan. The world at large knows nothingabout the Congo (or at least they didn’t untilOprah lifted it up), and Oprah raised thequestion, “Why is it that no one knows?” Theresponse was, “Because this is Africa.Because these are Black people and becausethey don’t count!”

Unfortunately, the same mentality has beendriving the media coverage of the tsunami andthe suffering caused by the tsunami inSamalia, Kenya and Tanzania.

One of the mission bodies whom we havesupported for a quarter of a century, the LottCarey Convention, sent out an appeal for thevictims of the tsunami earlier this month. Inthat appeal (made by an African Americanorganization) there was no mention of the

African countries affected by the tsunami andas soon as I read it, I fired off a letter to theExecutive Director, Dr. David Goatley. Belowis Dr. Goatley’s response. At least somebody“gets it!”

20 January 2005

Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., Senior PastorTrinity United Church of Christ400 W. 95th StreetChicago, IL 60628-1120

Dear Jeremiah:

Thank you for your letter addressingthe absence of reference to African victims ofthe Indian Ocean Tsunami. Your note of myomission is well taken.

We will be directing resources toAfrican victims of the disaster in collaborationwith the All Africa Conference of Churcheswith whom we have partnership aroundcontinental-wide support for HIV/AIDSprevention, treatment and care. They arehaving a press conference on 21 January 2005in Nairobi to unfold their fact-finding visitsand strategies for support and presence inSomalia, Kenya and Tanzania.

My struggle was to communicaterapidly with the information at hand. Thishaste, however, left a gaping hole in myappeal. Thanks, again for raising this problemthat I should have recognized earlier. Thanks, also, for your partnership in this ministry.

On mission with Christ,

David Emmanuel Goatley

Last year at the end of the year, one ofour members, Daryl Thomas, asked for yourhelp. Daryl was the “miracle child” who losthis hearing, but who continued to be anexcellent athlete and a star in the arena ofbasketball.

In 1999, Daryl was the First Team All-Star Center at the United States of America’sDeaf Sports Federation Team, leading his teamto the National Championship. In 2001, hewas the Most Valuable Player and the FirstTeam All-Star Center, repeatedly leading histeams to National Championships in both 2001and 2002.

In 2004 he was, again, the First TeamAll-Star Center and was also selected to go tothe Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, andplay with the United States of America’sMen’s Deaflympics Basketball Team. Eachteam member, however, had to raise his ownmoney for airfare, for accommodations and forall of the incidentals pertaining to the trip toAustralia.

You, the members of Trinity madeDaryl’s trip possible! Because of yourkindness and your faithfulness, Daryl not onlywent to Australia, Daryl’s team won FirstPlace in the Olympics! DDaarryyll bbrroouugghhtt hhoommeetthhee GGoolldd!

Daryl, Simone and Amani want tothank you for your support and for your loveand your prayers. Daryl is a Special Educationteacher at the Nancy B. Jefferson AlternativeSchool.

In the Spanish language, when personspart from each other they say, “Vaya ConDios!” That very beautiful saying whentranslated into English means, “Go With God.”

The word “goodbye” is a contractionfrom the English language (hundreds of years

ago) and it contracts the sentence, “God bewith you.” Actually, it is saying, “God bewith ye!”

In both English and Spanish theparting words are invoking the presence ofGod in the lives of those loved ones who areleaving us and going away from us. That isthe prayer and that is the expression that weextend today to Rosalie Metcalfe and toDeacon Andre Ward and his family.

Rosalie is getting married next weekand moving back to Swartz Creek, Michigan.Rosalie has served our church faithfully eversince she moved into the Chicago area.

Rosalie has served me personally asher work with United Airlines has enabled herto help me with flights and with reservationswhen I was told there were none! Rosalie hasbeen seen Sunday after Sunday serving withthe Usher Ministry for over ten years!

We praise God for her marriage andwe praise God for this new phase in her lifewhich will be a blessing; but we will miss hertremendously! To Rosalie we say, “Go withGod and may God be with you!”

Deacon Andre Ward and his wife,Kathy, are moving this week to Akron, Ohio.Mrs. Kathy Ward is from Akron. Her familystill lives there.

Deacon Ward first came to our churchbecause of his position in the area of security. He was the top notch security person for oneof the major downtown buildings and hisdiligence and excellence caught the eye of ourLong Range Planning Ministry. Since he hasbeen here, however, he moved from security tospirituality!

Andre is one of our “spirited deacons.”He, Ray McDaniel and I are the “steppers” inthe Deacon Ministry. His faithfulness invisiting the sick and in comforting thebereaved have blessed our churchtremendously!

To Andre and Kathy we also say, “Gowith God and may God be with you!” Pleasebe sure to give our loved ones a Holy hug thisSunday and wish them well as they leave usfor new fields of service and new phases intheir lives.

“Of all the forms of inequality, injusticein health care is the most shocking andinhuman.” These words were uttered by Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1966, when hebrought the civil rights movement to Chicago.

Health care does not only consist of thetreatment of recipients (patients) of health care.Health care also deals with how those whodeliver health care (workers) are treated.Mistreatment of health care deliverers directlyaffects the quality of treatment for health carerecipients.

Today, at 2:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, you will hear testimonies of health carerecipients and health care deliverers as to theirrespective treatment by Advocate Health Care.I invite you to come and share in the storiesfrom the lips, lives and hearts of those whowork for Advocate Health Care systems.

I am purposely not including anystatistics, opinions, or other verbiage aboutAdvocate Health Care, because I want you tocome and hear the stories for yourself. I wantyou to come and hear the cries for justice andliberation that leap off the lips of the laborersand patients in the Advocate Health Caresystem.

Afterward, I invite you to move toaction in seeking justice for the workers andpatients.

SSTTEEWWAARRDDSSHHIIPPA LOT OF WORK TO DO

If Jesus walked up to you and said:“Come follow me - I have a lot of work todo and I really need your help,” would youtell Him to get lost because you are just toobusy in your pursuit of personal possessionsand worldly comfort? Every day is a time toreflect on all that God has given you and atime to share and care about others. Haveyou given any consideration to helpingJesus carry out His works in your ownchurch?

THERE’S A HITCH TO IT!With his thumb, a hitchhiker says: “Youfurnish the gas, car, repairs, upkeep andinsurance; and I’ll ride with you. But if youhave an accident, I’ll sue you for damages!”

Sounds pretty one-sided, but onewonders how many hitchhikers there are inchurches and organizations. Many seem tosay, “You go to the meetings, serve onboards and committees, and take care of thethings that need doing; and I’ll go along forthe ride! If things don’t happen to suit myfancy, I will complain, criticize andprobably get out and hitchhike with anothergroup.”

Hitchhiker or driver - which kind ofmember are you?
