1 Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless theLORD guards the city, the guard keepswatch in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise upearly and go late to rest, eating the bread ofanxious toil; for he gives sleep to hisbeloved. 3 Sons are indeed a heritage fromthe LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior arethe sons of one's youth. 5 Happy is the manwho has his quiver full of them. He shall notbe put to shame when he speaks with hisenemies in the gate.

9 He also told this parable to some whotrusted in themselves that they wererighteous and regarded others with contempt:10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, waspraying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am notlike other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers,or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twicea week; I give a tenth of all my income.' 13But the tax collector, standing far off, wouldnot even look up to heaven, but was beatinghis breast and saying, 'God, be merciful tome, a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man wentdown to his home justified rather than the
other; for all who exalt themselves will behumbled, but all who humble themselveswill be exalted."

64 But among you there are some whodo not believe." For Jesus knew from thefirst who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him.65 And he said, "For this reason I have toldyou that no one can come to me unless it isgranted by the Father." 66 Because of thismany of his disciples turned back and nolonger went about with him. 67 So Jesusasked the twelve, "Do you also wish to goaway?" 68 Simon Peter answered him,"Lord, to whom can we go? You have thewords of eternal life. 69 We have come tobelieve and know that you are the Holy Oneof God." 70 Jesus answered them, "Did I notchoose you, the twelve? Yet one of you is adevil." 71 He was speaking of Judas son ofSimon Iscariot, for he, though one of thetwelve, was going to betray him.

The United Church of Christ's Justice andWitness Ministries is celebrating today's(March 1) decision by the U.S. Supreme Courtto abolish the death penalty for juveniles.
By a narrow 5-4 decision, the high court ruledit unconstitutional for courts to impose capitalpunishment on those who were juveniles at thetime they committed their crimes. As many as70 death row inmates are expected to beaffected by the decision, news reports indicate.
The decision was hailed immediately by manyfaith groups -- including the UCC, which haslong opposed capital punishment as immoraland inhumane.
Since 1969, the UCC's General Synod hasadopted multiple resolutions pointing out thegross injustices and racial inequalitiesassociated with the death penalty, calling forits abolishment. In 1999, the church's nationalrepresentative body - which speaks "to" butnot "for" UCC congregations - called for amoratorium on executions, and in 2001, theGeneral Synod affirmed the right of juvenilesto an "equitable system of justice."
The Rev. Sala W. J. Gonzales Nolan, theUCC's minister for criminal justice and humanrights, said the Supreme Court's action isfurther evidence that the United States iscoming to a new understanding about the

immorality of state-sanctioned executions. TheUnited States remains one of the lastindustrialized countries in the world to imposethe death penalty.
"It is one thing to oppose the death penaltybecause it is unfair," Nolan said. "It is anotherto oppose it simply because it is wrong."
"Again and again, the United Church of Christhas called out the disproportionate number ofblack, Hispanic, poor and disabled people whooccupy death row," she said, "...but this hasnothing to do with why the death penalty iswrong. To take someone's life deprives thatperson absolutely of the ability to transcend, aswe were all meant to do. This is whyvengeance does not belong to us."
As your pastor, I remind you that all the UCCseems to be known for is its position on Openand Affirming congregations. I told you inlast year's "State of the Church" message thatyour (our) denomination has been a strongadvocate for Social Justice since its standsagainst slavery in the 1600s and 1700s. Ourdenomination was the church that paid for thedefense of the Mende people aboard the slaveship La Amistad.
Our denomination had churches and membersof churches who were active on theUnderground Railroad. Our denominationfounded Howard University, AtlantaUniversity (now Clark-Atlanta), DillardUniversity, Fisk University, Tougaloo College,Talladega College, Huston Tillotson Collegeand LeMoyne Owen College because our
denomination has been committed to thefreedom and education of African Americansfor centuries.
As a denomination we are far more than thepress makes us out to be because of one issue. We have been against the death penalty fordecades! We applaud the Supreme Court'sdecision. They do "get it right" every now and

A four-year consumer boycott of Taco Bellrestaurants ended today (March 8) with anannouncement that the restaurant's parentcompany, Yum Brands, based in Louisville,Ky., would take significant steps to improveincome and working conditions for those whopick tomatoes used by the fast-food giant.
The Florida-based Coalition of ImmokaleeWorkers (CIW) - the farm worker organizationthat mounted and organized the successfulboycott - announced the victorious conclusionat a 3 p.m. (ET) press conference.

According to CIW, Taco Bell has agreed to a"groundbreaking agreement" in which thecompany will pay "the penny-per-poundsurcharge demanded by workers and will workwith CIW to raise farm labor standards in thesupply chain and across the industry as awhole."
Edith Rasell, the UCC's minister for laborrelations and community economicdevelopment, hailed the news as "an importantvictory after a long, four-year struggle."
"We can be proud that the UCC was the firstnational denomination to endorse the boycott, and that many UCC congregations all over thecountry worked and prayed in support of thisstruggle for justice," Rasell said.
In July 2001, just three months after theboycott's launch, the UCC's General Synod, meeting in Kansas City, Mo., became the firstdenominational body to endorse the farmworkers' campaign against Taco Bell. Insubsequent years, the UCC was joined byseveral religious groups including thePresbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the ChristianChurch (Disciples of Christ), the UnitedMethodist Church and the National Council ofChurches.
"We can also learn some important lessons,"Rasell said, noting that, in addition to TacoBell, Yum Brands also owns Kentucky FriedChicken, Pizza Hut, A&W and Long JohnSilvers. "It is a multi-billion dollar, multinational firm. It is the largest fast-food
company in the world."
"The vision of farm workers confronting Yumis a bit like David confronting Goliath," shesaid. "But the success of this struggleillustrates that when committed, faithfulpeople come together to work for justice, evenin the face of powerful opposition, there maybe nothing we cannot achieve. Our God ofjustice is a powerful God. Another world ispossible."
The boycott was launched in April 2001,Rasell said, because Florida's tomato pickersare paid just one-third of what they received25 years ago and "face harsh conditions andindignities in the fields."
However, in a statement from CIW, the farmworker organization now referred to Taco Bellas setting "a new standard of socialresponsibility for the fast-food industry."
Emil Brolick, Taco Bell president, said, "Werecognize that Florida tomato workers do notenjoy the same rights and conditions asemployees in other industries, and there is aneed for reform."
"With this agreement, we will be the first inour industry to directly help improvefarmworkers' wages," Brolick said. "And wepledge to make this commitment real bybuying only from Florida growers who passthis penny-per-pound payment entirely on tothe farmworkers, and by working jointly withthe CIW and our suppliers to monitor the

pass-through for compliance."
The Taco Bell celebration comes only sixmonths after another successful, hard-foughtvictory for farm workers.
In September 2004, a five-year boycott of theMt. Olive Pickle Company in North Carolina, initiated by the Farm Labor OrganizingCommittee (FLOC), ended successfully withthe signing of a union contract. The signing ofthat agreement took place at Community UCCin Raleigh, N.C., in recognition of the UCC'slongstanding support of justice for farmworkers.

Whenever there are vacancies on thefederal judicial bench, the President isbestowed the power to nominate those personswho are to fill the vacancies. If confirmed bythe Senate, these judges are appointed for life. This was one of the most important issuesduring the Presidential election of last fall.
During the last term, President Bushnominated 224 judges to fill vacancies on thefederal bench. Once nominated, these judgeshad to be confirmed by the Senate in order tobe placed on the bench. (This is an exampleof the supposed Checks and Balances whichare installed in the Constitution.) 204 of thejudges were confirmed while 20 of thesejudges were denied by the Senate. These 20judges were denied because of their propensityto support and defend corporate interests overthe rights of citizens.
Well, the truth is that we have aPresident who is also in favor of CorporateInterests over the rights of Ordinary Citizens. Therefore, President Shrub has renominatedthe same 20 nominees who were denied in thelast term. The Senate has begun deliberationson at least the first few of these 20 nominees.Consider the track record of the first threenominees:
WWiilllliiaamm MMyyeerrss has never sat on anybench and is a lobbyist for the cattle andmining industry. His position is that habitatconservation laws are unconstitutional becausethey interfere with potential profit. Moreover,he has even been known to illegally give away
sacred Native American land for strip mining.
TTeerreennccee BBooyyllee was a legal aid to JesseHelms. While sitting on other benches hisdecisions have intentionally disregardedemployment discrimination by race, genderand different ability. His decisions have alsobeen overturned over 120 times due tojudgment errors or blatant incompetence.
WWiilllliiaamm PPrryyoorr,, JJrr.. is another nomineewho has consistently argued and advocatedagainst civil rights for minorities, lesbian andgay couples, women and those who aredifferently-abled.
The importance of these nominees faroutlives the term of George W. Bush becausethese are lifetime appointments. I urge you tocontact your Senators (Barack Obama andRichard Durbin) and ask them to vote to rejectthese 20 nominees again.

Lenten Meditation #6LLIIVVIINNGG TTHHEE GGOOOODD LLIIFFEE
AA PPrroodduuccttiivvee LLiiffee
The Garden of Eden seemed ideal. Weoften try to rediscover it as a place for oursummer vacation, free of all responsibilities.Over a period of time, though, would we behappy there? Eventually, we might miss thesatisfaction of accomplishing something. Godmade our world in such a way as to makeproductivity both essential and rewarding. Weall have some responsibility toward the rest ofthe human family.
It is wonderful when people can feel productive in their chosen vocations, but life canalso be enriched by what we accomplish in relationships, what we give to the people around us athome as well as at work. Productivity involves building a life of integrity and of compassion.Scripture calls us to bear fruit and St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (5:22) tells us what this fruit islike: “The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Bearing this kind of fruit is infinitely rewarding.
Notice that in our Lenten search for “Living the Good Life,” goodness is one of the fruitsPaul mentioned. Part of goodness is found in making people around us feel good. When we leavethis life, or simply leave someone during the day, what of ourselves stays in their hearts andminds?
The abundant life that Jesus promised us calls for productivity. Our lives, like the life ofJesus, need to give something to those around us. The giving life, the serving, the kind of life thatbears fruit is in line with what God hopes for us. No “forbidden fruit” tempts us here, becaue thegood fruits of love and understanding and peace are found in abundance.

AAWWEESSOOMMEE SSTTEEWWAARRDDSSHHIIPP
While watching the evening news the night of October 15th, the tears flowed freely as Iheard the following story of awesome stewardship.
A young sugar beet farmer, I believe in his 20s, died from complications from anautomobile accident. The day after the funeral, friends and family showed up at thehome of his widow and child. This group arrived with nearly 100 trucks and all of theother equipment needed to harvest the sugar beets. They harvested 250 acres in threehours.
Talk about an awesome example of stewardship! These men and women had their owncrops to harvest; yet they gave of their time, talent and treasures to help a friend andneighbor. Do you think this group knows the meaning of stewardship? Of course theydo.
After hearing this story, the first of many scriptures that comes to mind for me is Luke6:38, “Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shakentogether, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be themeasure you get back.”
I do not believe these people gave to get back, but I do believe that they will “get back.”
