confession of sins

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings, and our

breaking of our Covenant with You.Not only have we done things we ought not to

have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed — even our own Black brothers and sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your name the praise forevermore.

TO ALL OUR VISITORS … To all who mourn and need comforting … To all who are friendless and want friendship … To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming and may God bless you.

7:30 a.m., 6:00 p.m. geNeSIS 39:1–10 (NRSV) 1Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; he was in the house of his Egyptian master. 3His master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hands. 4So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him; he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. 5From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had, in house and field. 6So he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge; and, with him there, he had no concern for anything but the food that he ate. Now Joseph was handsome and good-looking. 7And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” 8But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he

has put everything that he has in my hand. 9He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” 10And although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not consent to lie beside her or to be with her.

11:00 a.m. 2 SAmUeL 13:1–22 (The Message, Peterson)

1– 4Some time later, this happened: Absalom, David’s son, had a sister who was very attractive. Her name was Tamar. Amnon, also David’s son, was in love with her. Amnon was obsessed with his sister Tamar to the point of making himself sick over her. She was a virgin, so he couldn’t see how he could get his hands on her. Amnon had a good friend, Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah. Jonadab was exceptionally streetwise.

He said to Amnon, “Why are you moping around like this, day after day—you, the son of the king! Tell me what’s eating at you.” “In a word, Tamar,” said Amnon. “My brother Absalom’s sister. I’m in love with her.” 5“Here’s what you do,” said Jonadab. “Go to bed and

pretend you’re sick. When your father comes to visit you, say, ‘Have my sister Tamar come and prepare some supper for me here where I can watch her and she can feed me.’” 6So Amnon took to his bed and acted sick. When the king came to visit, Amnon said, “Would you do me a favor? Have my sister Tamar come and make some nourishing dumplings here where I can watch her and be fed by her.” 7David sent word to Tamar who was home at the time: “Go to the house of your brother Amnon and prepare a meal for him.” 8 – 9So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house. She took dough, kneaded it, formed it into dumplings, and cooked them while he watched from his bed. But when she took the cooking pot and served him, he wouldn’t eat. 9–11Amnon said, “Clear everyone out of the house,” and they all cleared out. Then he said to Tamar, “Bring the food into my bedroom, where we can eat in privacy.” She took the nourishing dumplings she had prepared and brought them to her brother Amnon in his bedroom. But when she got ready to feed him, he grabbed her and said, “Come to bed with me, sister!” 1–13“No, brother!” she said, “Don’t hurt me! This kind of thing isn’t done in Israel! Don’t do this terrible thing! Where could I ever show my face? And you—you’ll be out on the street in disgrace. Oh, please! Speak to the king—he’ll

let you marry me.” 14But he wouldn’t listen. Being much stronger than she, he raped her. 15No sooner had Amnon raped her than he hated her—an immense hatred. The hatred that he felt for her was greater than the love he’d had for her. “Get up,” he said, “and get out!” 16–18“Oh no, brother,” she said. “Please! This is an even worse evil than what you just did to me!” But he wouldn’t listen to her. He called for his valet.

“Get rid of this woman. Get her out of my sight! And lock the door after her.” The valet threw her out and locked the door behind her. 18–19 She was wearing a long-sleeved gown. (That’s how virgin princesses used to dress from early adolescence on.) Tamar poured ashes on her head, then she ripped the long-sleeved gown, held her head in her hands, and walked away, sobbing as she went.

0Her brother Absalom said to her, “Has your brother Amnon had his

way with you? Now, my dear sister, let’s keep it quiet—a family matter. He is, after all, your brother. Don’t take this so hard.” Tamar lived in her brother Absalom’s home, bitter and desolate. 1–King David heard the whole story and was enraged, but he didn’t discipline Amnon. David doted on him because he was his firstborn. Absalom quit speaking to Amnon—not a word, whether good or bad—because he hated him for violating his sister Tamar.

groups “have ended up representing not Israel but its right-wing political establishment, with American defenders of Israel accusing critics of being ‘anti-Semitic’ for saying things that are commonplace in Israel’s own internal debate.”

The publication, Sightings, (which your pastor reads every week) focuses chiefly on domestic matters, but Israel poses issues that fit Sightings’ mandate to observe “public religion” here. Says The Economist, the lobbies “have formed an unholy alliance with evangelical Christian groups who believe, like the religious Zionists, that the ingathering of the Jewish exiles will bring forward Judgment Day,” and in their fervor they are “more uncompromisingly Zionist than most Jews.”

“Diaspora Blues” headlines a January 11 Economist editorial, and accompanies a news account that appears under the title “Second Thoughts about the Promised Land.” Both articles reflect some of the spiritual travail within Israel and the hearts of many Jews. “As the threat of genocide or of Israel’s destruction has receded, a growing number of diaspora Jews neither feel comfortable with always standing up for Israel, nor feel a need to invoke Israel in defining what makes them Jewish.”

Yet, the editors argue, “the big Jewish diaspora institutions,” especially “the pro-Israel lobby groups in America,” have not caught up, as they exist mainly to support Israel in crisis and to defend it from critics. The British magazine also says that these

What About Israel? For 35 years now, members of our congregation have asked me (over and over agin) to explain the

modern state of Israel to them as compared to what they hear right-wing Christians saying the Bible says about Israel. I have been trying to clarify for them the difference between Biblical Israel and Zionism since 1948. It has been an uphill battle for me.

To show how complex the subject is and how Jews themselves disgree with what Christians are hearing from the far-right fringes (Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson and crew), I have printed below an important piece of information (with background sources) for members who are interested in sorting out fact from fiction concerning our faith and the foundations of our faith.

Changes for Jews— Martin E. Marty

That such a Judgment Day will “entail the destruction of Israel and the deaths of a great many Jews does not seem to bother the Jewish lobbies.”

Now to the point: Such defensiveness, it is argued, does not much help the Jewish diaspora, as young Jews leave the faith, finding the uncritical attitude toward Israel distasteful or Israel irrelevant. “Many are simply drifting away,” something that Christians also experience, even without the issue of Israel.

“Israel is strong enough to cope with harsh words from its friends,” so more diaspora Jews should feel freer to criticize the scandal-ridden government and policies they find hard to defend. Religiously, Reform and Conservative Jews in America resent the monopoly of the Orthodox in religious affairs and ceremonies in Israel.

Aliyah (Hebrew for “ascent”) immigration to Israel has slowed, and since 1948 only 10,000 Americans have taken part in it. Today only 17 percent of American Jews call themselves Zionists. In a new survey, Steven M. Cohen at Hebrew Union College found that “only 57 percent of American Jews said that ‘caring about Israel is a very important part of my being Jewish,’ down from 73 percent in a similar survey in 1989.”

American Judaism, says The Economist, is today too pluralistic, multi-denominational, and influenced by intermarriage and varying degrees of assimilation — and, most of all when it comes

to the young, it is not preoccupied with Israeli policies. The young are “searching for identity, spirituality, meaning and roots.”

Cohen foresees “a polarization in American Jewry: a small group growing more pious and attached to Israel, while a larger one drifts away.” News accounts of Israel’s wars, scandals, and policies, and American lobbies’ involvement with each, obscure something that Jews have in common with so many other Americans today: a spiritual search undertaken in ways oblivious to, or in rejection of, many traditional institutions. Welcome to the club?

Or you can make some international comparisons:

South Africa under apartheid was internationally condemned as a racist society.

South Africa under apartheid (1993), Black males: 851 per 100,000

U.S. under George Bush (003), Black males: 4,919 per 100,000

What does it mean that the leader of the “free world” locks up its Black males at a rate 5.8 times higher than the most openly racist country in the world?

Statistics as of June 30, 004 from Bureau of Justice Statistics Prison and Jail Inmates at Midyear 004, Tables 1, 13 and 14, and Census Bureau population estimates for 004. South Africa figures from Marc Mauer, Americans Behind Bars: The International Use of Incarceration. All references to Blacks and Whites are for what the Bureau of Justice Statistics and U.S. Census refer to as “non-Hispanic Blacks” and “non-Hispanic Whites.”

Last edit: 6/8/005

On June 30, 004, there were ,131,180 people in U.S. prisons and jails. That’s a rise of .3% during the 1 previous months. Federal prisons are growing almost 5 times faster than state prison populations.

As of June 30, 004, the U.S. incarceration rate was 76 per 100,000 residents. But when you break down the statistics you see that incarceration is not an equal opportunity punishment.

Select U.S. incarceration rates:Whites: 393 per 100,000Latinos: 957 per 100,000Blacks: ,531 per 100,000

Gender is an important “filter” on the who goes to prison:

All Females: 13 per 100,000All Males: 1,348 per 100,000White males: 717 per 100,000Latino males: 1,717per 100,000Black males: 4,919 per 100,000

Break it down by age and race, and you can see what is going on even clearer:

For Black males ages 5-9: 1,603 per 100,000. (That’s 1.6% of Black men in their late 0s!)

Incarceration is not equal opportunity punishment

Christian leaders of American churches and Christian institutions from a range of traditions — Orthodox, Catholic, mainstream and evangelical Protestants — have appealed to President Bush for peace in the Holy Land. The January 3rd letter, signed by 39 church leaders, encourages President Bush to make Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking, in the context of a comprehensive Arab-Israeli peace initiative, an urgent priority for his Administration. The letter states a deepening concern for the welfare and future of the Palestinian Christian community. It also calls attention to the very grave situation of Jerusalem. The full letter is included below.

The church leaders’ letter to President Bush will be delivered Thursday to all Senate and House offices. It is also the basis of an ad in the January 30th edition of Roll Call , a widely read publication on Capitol Hill. CMEP encourages advocates to contact their Congressional offices to raise up the main points of the letter. In the new political climate on Capitol Hill, this is a good opportunity to urge bi- partisan work towards a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that, as stated by President Bush in his 007 State of the Union address, results in two states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and security.

TAKE ACTION: Call the Washington offices of your Representative and two Senators. Say you are calling to endorse the January 3 church leaders’ letter to President Bush urging Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking. Ask the Senator/Representative to work with the Administration towards negotiations that guarantee two viable and secure states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side and sharing Jerusalem.

Contact Info: Email or call your Senators and Representative.

Church Leaders’ Letter to President Bush January 23, 2007

Dear Mr. President,

As leaders of churches and Christian institutions in the United States, we bring you greetings for the New Year and encouragement as you meet the challenges that face our nation and the global community. Even though we are from a wide range of Christian traditions — Orthodox, Catholic, mainstream and evangelical Protestants — we stand close together in our hopes and prayers for peace in the land we all call Holy and for the reconciliation of the children of Abraham — Jews, Christians and Muslims.

We come to you with two interrelated appeals that are central to our faith-motivated quest for peace with justice. First, we ask that you make

pastor’s paGe

Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking, in the context of a comprehensive Arab-Israeli peace initiative, an urgent priority for your Administration. We recognize the great many difficulties and struggles that the people of the Middle East region must confront and the heavy responsibilities that fall upon you to help restore hope for a better future for them and for the citizens of the United States. We know that many view the Israeli-Palestinian situation as the most intractable in our troubled world, but we know that when it is resolved, the positive repercussions will go well beyond that small geographic area.

We commend your vision of a viable, contiguous Palestinian state living as a peaceful neighbor alongside the state of Israel, with both nations secure and recognized by their neighbors. With your active engagement, this vision could reignite a passion for peace that can overcome the appeal of violence, vengeance and exclusivity. The United States and the world will become safer as confidence grows that the U.S. is willing to take leadership and work cooperatively with the United Nations and other nations to resolve this conflict.

We bring to you our deepening concern for the welfare and future of the Palestinian Christian community. A small but vital part of the Palestinian society, Christians are rapidly emigrating to countries where they can gain the economic and physical security that is denied all Palestinians living under occupation. The future of the Palestinian Christians requires a solution to the

conflict that will allow both peoples — Israelis and Palestinians — to live side-by-side in two states where all enjoy justice, peace and security.

The Palestinian Christian leaders have asked us to bring to your attention the very grave situation of Jerusalem. They remind us that Jerusalem is the location of “not only historical memories and sacred places of pilgrimage, but also living communities of believers.” With the construction by Israel of the separation barrier, many of the faithful — both Christians and Muslims — are excluded from the Holy City, and Jerusalem is severed from Bethlehem. Our second appeal is for you to work with Israelis, Palestinians and the international community to guarantee access to Jerusalem’s Holy Places and religious liberty for all peoples. Resolving the status of Jerusalem is key to achieving a workable two-state solution.

Mr. President, as this New Year begins, we encourage you to maintain the faith, the courage and the resolve to work with other world leaders toward negotiations that guarantee two viable and secure states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side and sharing Jerusalem. For guidance, we look to the examples of the great prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah who declared that God calls all nations and all people to do justice to one another. We join in praying for peace in the Holy Land and at home.

Sincerely,

JanuaryIsaiah 40:1-2 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.

FebruaryIsaiah 40:4–5 4 “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

MarchIsaiah 40:11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

AprilIsaiah 40:18 To whom, then, will you compare God? What image will you compare him to?

May Isaiah 40:21 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

JuneIsaiah 40:25 “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.

JulyIsaiah 40:26 Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

AugustIsaiah 40:27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”?

SeptemberIsaiah 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

OctoberIsaiah 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

NovemberIsaiah 40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

DecemberIsaiah 40:31 But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

RestorationA God of My heartfelt hope for the congregation in the year 2007 is that each member

will fully embrace what it means to be loved by a God who restores. God is a God of redemption and not a God of condemnation.

Isaiah 40 (NIV)
