PASTOR’S GREETING, INTRODUCTIONS, AND LIFE OF THE CHURCH

HYMN #106 Prepare the Way, O Zion BEREDEN VÄG FÖR HERRAN (See music in bulletin)

CALL TO WORSHIP

L: On this third Sunday of Advent we join with the writers of Scripture to sing of hope and healing. With our hearts, we praise the Lord, and we are glad.

P: God’s greatness was shown in Christ, the child born of Mary. The healing balm which He brought to this world is still among us today as we follow in the ways that Christ taught.

L: This morning we relight the first and second candles on our Advent wreath. The light of these burning candles reminds us that our waiting and dreaming can make a positive difference in our world. God’s desire is for healing and restoration. This third candle reminds us that God calls us to be part of the healing of the world. Let us rejoice.

CHRISTMAS POEM Trinity 4Kids

Remember Christmas

By Valerie L. Plowman

Red reminds me of the blood He spilt

to wash away and cleanse all of our guilt

White is for His action, most pure.

Through sinless perfection, He did endure

Green is for life eternal

we can obtain through our Lord supernal.

The star shines like the one so bright

that twinkles above that first Christmas night.

Page 3: Trinityaztrinitypres.org/191215-bulletin-10am.pdf · Trinity Sunday, December 15th, 2019 10:00 a.m. Trinity Presbyterian Church 630 Park Avenue Prescott, Arizona 86303 (928) 445-4536

The fir tree is for many things:

the tree of Jesse – the father of kings,

and for the needles pointing to the Lord --

that little babe we all adored.

The wreath shows one eternal round;

the begin’ of the Lord cannot be found.

The lights remind us that this babe

is the light of the world and born to save.

The candy cane is for the crook;

not one sheep or lamb the shepherd forsook.

The Christmas bells we love to ring

proclaim joy! The birth of a newborn king.

These symbols remind us that we,

more like the three wise men all now should be.

Earnestly seeking to find the new babe

who humbly in a manger laid.

ADVENT PRAYER

L: We rejoice at what God has done, and what God is still doing turning our deserts into gardens of blessing. Let us trust in God, turning to Him in prayer.

P: In this Season of Advent, we are called to wait. In the book of James we are called to patience for the coming of the Lord is near, but waiting is hard. We expect things instantly. We are very busy, and there is so much to do. Calm us down, O God. Help us to listen to your voice of this season. Help us to be open to Jesus coming into our lives in a new way. Help us to be patient with one another, and with ourselves. Hear us now, O God, as we pray in silence, asking for strength, asking for patience.

(Silence for personal prayer.)

Page 4: Trinityaztrinitypres.org/191215-bulletin-10am.pdf · Trinity Sunday, December 15th, 2019 10:00 a.m. Trinity Presbyterian Church 630 Park Avenue Prescott, Arizona 86303 (928) 445-4536

L: Holy God, Mighty One, how may we help to prepare the way? Are there ways that we might give of ourselves? May we lose jealousy, a sense of pride, the harboring of resentment or old quarrels with family, friend, or neighbor? Hear the prayers of our inner most hearts, as we now silently confess to you our hidden deceits.

(Silence for personal confession.)

Amen.

DECLARATION OF PARDON L: God’s will for us is security and peace in a community of mutual caring. God

speaks to our hearts. Be strong. Do not be afraid. We are offered a new pathway to true prosperity, seeking one another’s good.

P: To you O’ God we lift our praise. You fill us with hope and grace. Thanks be to You O’ God, in and through Your grace, we are forgiven!

L: May our hearts be strengthened, for the coming of the Lord is near. Let us stand and give glory to God!

GLORIA PATRI Hymn #579 Glory be to the Father And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, World without end – Amen, Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

ANTHEM Celebration of Light Joseph M. Martin

Rise and shine, your Light has come! See a star is glowing! In the longing of the heart, faith and truth are growing! In the darkness, there's a candle teaching shadows how to dance. Stars from heaven join the music, singing from the vast expanse.

Rise and shine, your Light has come! Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus is coming soon! Rise and live in the Light of peace. See a dove is climbing. In the soaring of your souls, love and hope is thriving.

Celebrate the coming joy! Rejoice with expectation. Lift up your heads. Lift up your voice. Lift up your song. Rejoice! Rejoice! The dawn is breaking with the Light of all creation!

Rise and shine, your Light has come! See the dawn is breaking. Rise and shine, your Light has come! Ev'ry dream awaken! Heavy hearts begin to soar with songs of glad thanksgiving; Reaching for the Morning Star and a new beginning.

Rise and shine, your Light has come! Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus is coming! Rise and shine, your Light has come! Rise and shine, your Light has come! Rise and shine, the Light of lights has come to you!

PRAYER OF DEDICATION

SCRIPTURE READING: Isaiah 35:1-10 (Pew Bible pg 578)

1 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus 2 it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. 3 Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. 4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you." 5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then the

lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; 7 the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. 8 A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God's people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. 9 No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. 10 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

CONFESSION OF FAITH A Brief Statement of Faith Presbyterian Church (USA)

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION, CONCLUDING WITH THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power

And the glory, forever. Amen.

JESUS CHRIST: ADVENT

106Prepare the Way, O Zion

Guitar chords do not correspond with keyboard harmony.

This engaging Advent text based on Isaiah 40:3–5 and Psalm 24:7–10 has been in use in the Church of Swedenfor almost two hundred years. It is set to a version of an even older Swedish tune, which in turn seems to bederived from a German folktune that spread to Scandinavia.

WAITING (Cason)SM

This simple and meditative Advent hymn is so uncomplicated in both text and tune that it can be learnedquickly and sung without reference to a book, which might make it effective as a prayer response. It wouldalso lend itself to improvised stanzas on appropriate occasions.

BIBLE STUDIES & FELLOWSHIP “Open my eyes, so that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”~Psalm 119:18 (NRSV)

TRINITY 4KIDS is our program for children up to 5th grade. We meet year-round on Sundays at 8:30 AM and 10:15 AM in the Children's Center (through Grace Mitchell and downstairs). Come join us for fun, lessons, and activities! For more information contact Jennifer Garber at [email protected] or 928-445-4536, ext. 114.

IGNITE YOUTH: God does not call us to be “lukewarm” believers. He wants all of our hearts, all of the time. Let’s grow together and learn how to ignite our faith so that we can do our best to always be believers on fire for Christ. Open to all youth ages 6th grade through 18 years old. Sundays year-round at 10:15 AM, and Wednesdays during the school year from 3:30-5:30 PM in the Youth Room. For more information, contact Kelsey Claire at 928-445-4536, ext. 110 or [email protected].

INTERSECTIONS CLASS is currently studying and discussing the book, New Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton. Merton uses the Gospel parable of the sower as a metaphor for the “sowing of seeds” meant to lead to an abundant harvest in the spiritual life of his readers. The book considers aspects of Christian contemplation in 39 short chapters or "seeds" covering a diverse range of topics. All are welcome Sundays at 8:30 AM in the Sicatuva Room.

FRIDAY WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP meets Fridays at 9:30 AM in the Sicatuva room. We are currently on break for the Advent season. We will reconvene on January 10th and begin our winter study, "What Does the Lord Require?" by James Howell, on January 17th. Please contact Kate (267.981.3923) if you would like to join us. We look forward to welcoming you!

THIS WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

THE CHRISTMAS JOY OFFERING has been a cherished Presbyterian tradition since the 1930's. The Offering distributes gifts equally to the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions and to Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of color. The Assistance Program provides critical financial support to church workers and their families. Presbyterian-related schools and colleges provide education and leadership development while nurturing racial and ethnic heritage. Giving envelopes can be found on the table in the narthex.

CHRISTMAS CAROLING is TODAY, December 15th. We will meet at 3:15 PM at Samaritan Village to sing there and then move on to Prescott Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Caroling is a great way to be in the Christmas spirit. All are invited to come! If you have any questions, please call Joy at 928-445-7560.

LONGEST NIGHT SERVICE: A service for when the heavy burdens of life collide with the brilliance of Christmas. You are invited to come and worship the source of all love to know that we need not feel so alone in our grief. The Longest Night Service will be held this Wednesday, December 18th 2019 at 12:00 noon in the Trinity sanctuary.

LAST CHANCE FOR POINSETTIAS: If you would like to provide a poinsettia to beautify our sanctuary for Christmas, please complete a form available at the back of your bulletin or from the narthex table. Return your completed form with $10 per plant, put it in a Pew Envelope, and place it in the collection plate, or drop it by the office, or mail it to the church office. You may pick up your plant(s) after the Christmas Eve service. Orders must be in the office no later than TOMORROW Monday, December 16th. Thank you!

CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE – Join us Christmas Eve (Tuesday, 12/24/19) at 7:00 PM for a traditional service of candlelight, scripture readings, and carols. Pre-service music begins at 6:45 PM. If you are able, please park “in the neighborhood” so that others who find walking long distances a challenge can use the parking lot. Thank you!

PASTOR SUE MARIE'S EMAIL: When corresponding with Pastor Sue Marie by email please double check what email address you are using. Please use the [email protected] address. There is another email address being used that is no longer active. Using an address other than the [email protected] will result in lost correspondence - and we do not want that happening. Thank you so much for your attention to this issue.

COMMUNITY CUPBOARD NEWS: Thank you for your food and money donations. The money goes a long way because our buyer purchases items at a big discount for us. If you want to bring food please look for sales on canned fruit, canned meat, and peanut butter. These items are needed the most and cost the most for our buyer to purchase. Also, please continue to bring paper or plastic grocery bags and put them in the Community Cupboard box in the hallway outside the church office. THANK YOU!

PER CAPITA - As Presbyterians, we agree to participate in the life of the wider church by serving Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly. One of the ways we do this is through our Per Capita apportionment which is how we mutually share the cost of coming together to discern the Spirit's leading for the future. Each member is responsible for their share of this cost. The Presbytery of Grand Canyon approved the 2019 Per Capita apportionment at $36.25 per member. Per Capita gifts should be made payable to Trinity, and will be forwarded on to the Presbytery.
