Towards a Cash Free DayA few words about the theme of the conference, the agenda and the logistics.
Ballroom Luke Olbrich, Matt Lanford MasterCard Europe
09:15 - 10:00
How can Europe start to ‘walk the talk’ on moving towards a cash free society? For years, the “War on Cash” has been the subject on many lips in Europe but the introduction of SEPA, the PSD and the global economic crisis have tended to distract from the goal of a cash free European society. As a result, we have seen cash and coins in the eurozone growing at a rate more than double those of other economies such as the US and China. We start our conference by bringing together the key stakeholders to discuss how they can join forces to support banks and retailers to drive down costly cash and promote electronic payments.
Ballroom Javier Perez President of MasterCard Europe
Wiebe Ruttenberg Head of Market Division, European Central Bank
Mattia Adani Italian Treasury
10:00 - 10:40
How is the Netherlands planning to move to a cash free society? The Dutch zero cash program: A real-life show case of how banks and merchants are joining forces in their fight against cash with tangible examples of how to actively promote debit card payments with a focus on low value payments, the last bastion of cash.
Hungary : cash vs. cashless payments - the macro context of payment choices The Hungarian economy is unusually and persistently cash intensive. A first-hand brief from our host country central bank on why this is worrying in a macroeconomic - growth, financial stability, fiscal policy - context and what could be done about it.
