DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please explain vertigo? I fell asleep in a chair one evening, and when I woke, I was slightly dizzy. The next morning when I woke up and sat up, I was extremely dizzy. Everything was going back and forth. When I tried to walk, I was bouncing off the walls. The room was moving. My doctor prescribed Dramamine. I still wake up dizzy, but not as bad as the first two nights. I am 69. -- E.B.

ANSWER: Vertigo is a hallucination that everything is moving. It's not. What you describe fits the definition. Many causes of vertigo can be traced to the inner ear, which has two important functions: hearing and balance, the orientation of our body to the things around it. That function is handled by the vestibular system of the inner ear.

Sometimes a viral infection of the ear can trigger vertigo. The only way to handle it is to take a medicine such as you're taking and wait for the infection to clear in about three to six weeks.

Or it can come about because tiny cal-cium particles in the inner ear have made their way to places where they shouldn't be. This is benign positional vertigo. When af-fected people move their head or change position from lying or sitting to standing, the calcium particles activate the vestibular system abnormally, and profound dizziness strikes. When you woke up and sat up, you became dizzy. You changed positions. Calcium particles activated your vestibular system.

A doctor easily can prove benign position-al vertigo by provoking a dizzy spell through a series of head and body movements. He or she can coax those transplanted calcium specks back to their site of origin through

another series of movements, called the Epley maneuvers. The medicine you mention often lessens symptoms. An-tivert is another useful drug. So is scopolamine -- in its oral form, not in its patch form.

I made vertigo sound like an easy diagnosis and an easy treatment; it isn't. Many other

serious conditions have to be considered by the examining doctor.

The booklet on vertigo discusses this common malady in detail. To obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money or-der (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My teenage daugh-

ter twists and pulls her hair when she reads, watches TV or studies. She has two small bald patches on her scalp. I cannot get her to stop doing this. Is this normal? -- R.T.

ANSWER: It's not normal, but it's pretty common. It's trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-TILL-uh-MAY-nee-uh). Some classify it as an obsessive compulsive disorder. The hair pulling quiets an inner anxiety. It's almost an involun-tary act.

If you can't get your daughter to stop, the family doctor can recom-mend a therapist for her. The thera-pist can explain to her why she does this and how she can curtail the urge. Sometimes, medicines are pre-scribed for a short period.

She really does need attention. Constant hair pull-ing can damage the hair roots and lead to a permanent bald patch.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

• On Feb. 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln is born in Hodgenville, Ky. As an adult, Lincoln's sense of humor may have helped him hide recurring bouts of depression. He admitted to friends and colleagues that he suffered from intense melancholia and hypochondria most of his adult life.

• On Feb. 10, 1846, Brigham Young leaves Nauvoo, Ill., and begins leading 1,600 Mormons west across the frozen Mississippi River to a temporary refuge at Sugar Grove, Iowa. It was their first stop in a westward migration that

eventually brought them to the Great Salt Lake in Utah. By fall nearly 12,000 Mormons had made the trek.

• On Feb. 7, 1914, the silent film "Kid Auto Races at Venice" premieres in theaters, featuring actor Charlie Chaplin in his first screen appearance as the "Little Tramp." Movies converted to sound in the late 1920s, but Chaplin held out until his film "Modern Times" (1936).

• On Feb. 13, 1945, a series of Allied firebombing raids begins against the German city of Dresden, reducing the town to rubble and killing as many as 135,000 people. It was the most destructive bombing of the war. Little, if anything, was accomplished strategically, since the Germans were about to surrender.

January 27 - February 2, 2011

Jimmie Johnson isn't actually perched alone at the top of NASCAR. His car owner, Rick Hendrick, has also won five consecutive championships.

While five straight championships as an owner doesn't rival such attainment in a driver, it's instructive to note that Hendrick Motorsports' Chevys have won a total of

10 titles: five with Johnson, four with Jeff Gordon and one with Terry La-bonte. The total equals the all-time record of 10, won by Petty Enterprises with Richard (7) and Lee (3) Petty.

Hendrick, whose other business interests include an empire of automobile dealerships, never sits still. Johnson was the only one of his four drivers who won races last year. This led Hendrick to order an offseason shuffle of crew chiefs among the teams of Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

The team shuffle pairs crew chiefs Alan Gustafson with Jeff Gordon, Steve Letarte with Earnhardt and Lance McGrew with Martin.

"I think we just got complacent, and other teams were getting stronger and stronger," said Hendrick. "We were not really where we needed to be, so we started to really try to step up our program in every area."

The decision was based, Hendrick said, on a desire to "pair up people that I thought would be better together."

Describing the changes only in terms of crew chiefs is incomplete. The actual change is in drivers linked to the respective teams. Gordon, who drives No. 24, is now aligned with the entire team, not just crew chief Gustafson.

"We are not changing the people in the shops," said Hendrick. "The people in the '24' and '48' (Johnson) shops will remain the same. The only thing that will change is Jeff Gordon's seat becomes Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s seat. The cars, the people, will remain the same. The same is true in the other two shops (Earnhardt, Martin). The only things changed were the seat, the driver, the sponsor and the number."

Just having one team at the top isn't enough to please Hendrick."We have to work a lot harder and a lot smarter," he said. "I'm confident

that the guys can and will do it. They're really energized, so we'll just see."• • •

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I recently read reports of some shelters that rescue pets having to suspend new admissions because they can't afford to take any more. Is there any way to help them? I don't have much money. -- Agnes in Indianapolis

DEAR AGNES: The number of rescued and abandoned pets filling up shelters seems to be climbing all the time. Of course, these tough economic times don't help matters, as many pet owners struggle to keep their homes.

Even in better times, most shelters need help. Monetary donations can make a big impact, but there are other ways to help if your spare cash is limited.

If you have extra time during the week, consider volunteering at a local shelter. Most area shelters have websites with information on volunteering, positions they need volunteers for, whether they offer any training, and how many days a week that position requires. Volunteering for even a couple of hours a week can save shelters money on staffing costs and free up full-time staff for more complex tasks like health care.

Another way to help is to donate food or pet-related items. Again, call the shelter or check its website to see what is needed. If money to pur-chase food is tight, consider rallying your friends

Shelters Need Your HelpBy Sam Mazzotta

or neighbors to collect items that the shelter needs, and make a group donation.

Local shelters are providing a valuable service by caring for animals in transition -- hopefully, a transition to a new family. Even a small con-tribution can help improve conditions for shelter animals and keep shelter services running.

• It was beloved British mystery novelist and playwright Agatha Christie who made the following sage observation: "It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realize just how much you love them."
