• On Sept. 15, 1858, the new Overland Mail Company sends out its first two stagecoaches, inaugurating government mail service between the eastern and western regions of the nation. Overland later competed with the Pony Express until May 10, 1869, the day the first transcontinental railroad was completed. On that day, the U.S. government canceled its last overland mail contract.

• On Sept. 17, 1884, Judge Allen disposes of the 13 criminal cases on his Oakland, Calif., docket in only six minutes. Although he apparently set a new record for speed, defendants in Oakland's criminal court did not stand much of a chance of gaining an acquittal. In a 40-year period at the turn of the century, only 1 defendant in 100 was acquitted.

• On Sept. 14, 1901, U.S. President William McKinley dies after being shot by a deranged anarchist during the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. When McKinley was operated on after being shot, doctors had failed to find the bullet, and gangrene soon spread throughout his body.

• On Sept. 16, 1940, Selective Service is born as Congress passes the Burke-Wadsworth Act, imposing the first peacetime draft in the history of the United States. By the end of World War II, approximately 34 million men had registered, and 10 million served with the military.

• On Sept. 19, 1959, in one of the more surreal moments in the history of the Cold War, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev explodes with anger when he learns that he cannot visit Disneyland. Government authorities feared that the crowds would pose a safety hazard for the premier.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 78-year-old, semiretired man. I am very active and look a lot younger. I work part-time as a truck driver delivering auto parts to garages. Now I am out of work because of pain in my lower back. The pain runs down to my foot. I have been diagnosed with sciatica. My doctor sent me for an MRI, and it showed a bulging disk. What is the best remedy? I use ice packs, heating packs and hot packs. I am on crutches to take pressure off my leg. Would surgery help? -- J.S.

ANSWER: Back pain is one of the leading problems that send people to doctors. Most cases of back pain go away on their own, even if they're due to things like a bulging (also called herni-ated or ruptured) disk. Even though your back hurts, you can be as active as your pain allows. Don't sit for prolonged periods; sitting puts more pressure on your back than does standing or walking. Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. Continue with heat, cold or alternating heat and cold, whichever gives you the most pain relief. Tylenol or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, etc.) can make you more comfortable.

If the pain doesn't let up in six weeks, you have chronic back pain. Sciatica is pain that travels from the back down the leg to the foot. It comes from pressure on the sciatic nerve. In your case, the pressure most likely comes from your bulging back disk. Back disks are cartilage pads placed between adjacent backbones to absorb the shock those bones take from our walking, bending and pushing. The disk has a tough outer ring. Gelatinous material makes up the inner core. If there's a break in the outer ring, the inner core pushes through -- a bulging, herniated or ruptured disk, which-ever term you want to use.

If sciatica doesn't resolve on its own, a doctor can inject the back with cortisone to reduce inflammation. That can relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve. The procedure is called an epidural.

Surgeons, aided by a microscope, can remove the bulge through small incisions, about an inch long. This technique is called a microdiskectomy and usually is quite successful.

The booklet on back problems covers this topic in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money

order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newslet-ters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

September 2 - 8, 2010

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Just winning the Irwin Tools Night Race wasn't enough for Kyle Busch.

Bristol Motor Speedway hosted races in the Camping World Truck, Nationwide and Sprint Cup series. Busch won them all, and it's the first time anyone

ever did that since NASCAR began sponsoring three national touring series with the advent of truck racing in 1995.

"I've been trying to do this since I got to NAS-CAR," he said after the Cup victory. "This is history, and I'm proud to make it."

Two others, Brad Keselowski and Elliott Sadler, competed in all three races. Busch won them. This year Busch has won a total of 16 races in the three series: 10 in Nationwide, three in Cup and three in Truck.

The Cup victory was Kyle Busch's fourth at Bristol; his older brother Kurt has won five Cup races at the half-mile oval.

"I love Bristol, and I love winning," said Kyle. "And to do it for the first time ever in NASCAR, to sweep the weekend, man, that's pretty awesome.

"I don't know what to think. Fortunately, I was able to get it done, be the first one to do it. I'm the first in a lot of things."

Perhaps Bristol's huge crowds have grown weary of victories by the Busch brothers. Kyle faced thunderous boos during driver introductions and the celebration following the Cup victory. It didn't appear to faze him in the least. In fact, it looked as if he enjoyed it.

"I just come out here to do my job," he said. "I do what I'm supposed to do, and to win races is my job and what that entails. ... The fans drive this sport. They're what makes us go 'round and get us here every week. ... They're passionate about who they like and who they don't like.

Kyle Busch Is "The Man""I've been in this position since the start of my career, since I was

16, and it hasn't changed, and I don't foresee it changing anytime soon. We've asked this question about 50 million times, and I'll probably get

To create a natural garden, you must mimic nature. Using diversity, nature balances itself in exciting and magical ways. All elements work together as part of a larger whole. A natural garden will evolve, and as a gardener, you will have the privilege of watching it change.

A natural garden requires less water, pesticides and fertilizers than a traditional garden, and is easier to maintain. It is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and attracts wildlife.

A natural garden has four key elements:Use of natural materialsSeemingly random layered plantingsDrift plantingMinimal interference from the gardener once

established

Planning is essential to establishing a natural gar-den. Start by observing the lay of the land, adding contours and hills to make the land more interesting and appealing to wildlife. Use natural materials, such as logs or stones. Group stones in a random pattern, half burying some to give the look of age. Retaining walls, whether made of stone or wood, provide shelter for all kinds of wildlife.

Before going off to choose plants, prepare your new garden bed. The natural garden bed should be broad and deep to allow for layering. Remove all existing sod and check the soil texture. Make sure it is the right consistency for your region of the country. Soil that is too moist or too dry may not sustain the plants you choose unless amended. Most plants will grow best in a loamy soil, one consisting of small particles that crumble when squeezed in the fist. Till the soil six to nine inches deep and remove all weeds.

Your choice of plants will be determined by the amount of sun or shade available, the amount of rain-fall the site gets and whether or not the site is windy or sheltered. Choose plants that are compatible with the conditions of your site, selecting native species whenever possible. Buy several plants of one type, so your garden doesn’t look like a hodgepodge of miscellaneous plants. Plant in groupings with identical plants together in drifts.

Include trees, bushes, grasses and flowering plants in your natural garden. Plant trees first while there is plenty of room to work. Dig a hole twice as deep and twice as wide as the rootball, backfilling to bring the root crown to ground-level height. Group bushes together, taller ones toward the back of the gar-den and those growing to medium height toward the center of the bed. Plant the bushes slightly closer together than recommend-ed, so they’ll grow into one shape as they might in the wild.

When placing plants, consider how they will look together when bloom-ing. Choose a harmonious combination of annuals and perennials. Mulch each plant with natural materials, such as cocoa hulls, compost, shred-ded bark, pine needles or straw.

Pruning of bushes

should be kept to a minimum as it forces the tips to sprout, making it difficult for birds to enter. Prune dense trees if necessary to allow sunlight to filter through. If you have the space and the desire, include a pond in your natural landscape. Ponds provide a rich environment for plants and wildlife alike.

All gardening is a matter of trial and error and your natural garden will be no different. Don’t hesitate to remove plants that don’t perform to your satisfaction or are invasive. A certain amount of maintenance is required at the beginning, especially the removal of unwanted weeds. As Mother Nature lays her hand on your garden, you may discover all kinds of “vol-unteers.” Carefully select those to remove, though, as common weeds like thistle often attract butterflies and hummingbirds, helping to balance the ecology of your bed.

By working in harmony with nature, you can create your own natural garden right in your own backyard. Once established, your natural garden will require very little care.

In point of fact, that statement is misleading, as the Eskimo language is composed largely of roots and suffixes that can be combined in virtually unlimited ways.

As it turns out, that quotation did not come from Dr. Heimlich. DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I wanted to tell you a story about the cat who adopted us. In 1930 my brother and I lived with our parents on the fourth floor of a tenement building in the Lower East Side of New York City. We had a fire escape outside the bedroom window of our four-room apartment. In the summer, Mama opened the windows wide to let the fresh air in.

It was on one of these hot summer days that a pussycat brazenly came in through the open window. It looked starved, and my brother and I begged our parents to let it stay. They agreed. We fed "Cat" bread and milk, and later, scraps from our table. Every evening when my father came home from work, Cat would take a flying leap and land on his shoulder. My father loved the greeting.

After awhile though, Cat started leaving through the window again and coming back a few hours later. She also seemed to get fatter and fatter, until we realized she was pregnant. Cat delivered four babies on towels my mother laid out on the bathroom floor. My mother gave three of the kittens to neighbors and we kept the fourth, an all-white male we named "Whitey."

Whitey stayed with us through the winter, but by the next spring he got as restless as his mother and started leaving through the fire escape window. One day he went out and never came back again. -- Pearl M., Morse Township, N.J.

DEAR PEARL: Things were so different for pets and their owners back then. Pet food was an unheard-of extravagance, and veteri-nary care was not so common for housepets. Thank you for sharing!

A: David and I talked about that when he was promoting his new movie, "The Per-fect Teacher," for the Lifetime Movie Network (check your local listings for days and times). He told me he was invited but chose not to attend. "I love Da-vid (Hasselhoff) and really respect him. I know these roasts

can get pretty mean, and I just didn't want to do that to him." What a class act David is, huh?

Q: My husband and I got hooked on "Criminal Minds" and have been watching the reruns all summer. Will the show be coming back in the fall? -- Nancy G., Punta Gorda, Fla.

A: I love to be the bearer of good news, as so many of my readers' favorite shows seem to be getting canceled these days. "Criminal Minds" has been renewed by CBS for its sixth season, and it is set to premiere Wednesday, Sept. 22. Also, if you just can't get enough crime solving, midsea-son you can catch its spin-off, "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior," which is slated to star Forest Whitaker, Richard Schiff and Janeane Garofalo.

• • •Q: When will my favorite show, "Grey's Anato-

my," be back? And can you give me any teasers as to what's going to happen? -- Ingrid F., via e-mail

A: "Grey's Anatomy" will be back for its sev-enth season Thursday, Sept. 23, on ABC. When I recently spoke with Kim Raver, who plays Teddy Altman on the medical drama, she told me that her character gets a new love interest.

"I'm pretty sure that the triangle with Teddy, Owen and Kristina is done," Kim explains. "And while I'm sad for Teddy, because it's really hard for her, I'm just happy as a fan because the Owen and Kristina story has so much more to explore. I'm glad not to continue it, because otherwise it would have become redundant. It was a great way to establish Teddy. And so in the first couple of episodes you might actually see Teddy kind of having something romantic with a new person. She's gonna try!"

• • •Q: I watched "The Comedy Central Roast of

David Hasselhoff" this past month on TV, and I was glad to see a lot of his old "Baywatch" co-stars there. I did notice a few absences, like David Charvet. Why didn't he attend? -- Mischa W. in Oregon

If you’re making only minimum monthly pay-ments or have skipped one or more, if you keep charging things to credit cards that are nearly maxed out, if you keep checking your available credit or if you avoid taking phone calls until you check Caller ID, these are signs you could be overloaded with debt. Before you get to that point, though, you may experience extra stress, lack of sleep, fear of opening the mail -- all clues that your spending may be out of control.

Before the situation gets critical, you might consider getting credit counseling.

A credit counselor will go over your financial situation and talk with you about how you got into the situation. This is crucial because if consider-ation isn’t given to how you spent your way into debt, it likely will happen again.

Ideally, the counselor will contact your creditors and arrange a debt management plan that could include lower interest rates or monthly payments. Past-due accounts will be re-aged to bring them current. You’ll be required in most cases to close the accounts in question.

With the new payment arrangements you’ll have an opportunity to pay on time and build new, positive credit.

For problems you want to handle yourself, many people choose debt settlement as a way of reducing debt. This is where the creditor agrees to take a portion of the amount you owe and can-cel it while you make smaller payments on the remaining balance.

Debt settlement, however, can get you a Form 1099-C, and you’ll pay taxes on the forgiven amount, as it’s added to your income. If you get one of these, talk to your tax preparer and ask about filing a Form 982. You maybe be able to reduce the taxable amount of the forgiven debt.

That’s not to say all will be well. Settled ac-counts and those under a debt-management program will stay on your credit report for many years, nearly as long as a bankruptcy, and it might be difficult to get loans as long as those stay on your report.

No matter which way you choose to handle the problem, the faster you get a grip on your financial problems, the faster the stresses will go away. And that counts for a lot.

Q: I have a $20 bill printed by the Confederate States of America in Richmond in February of 1864. Does it have any value? -- Albert, Ormond Beach, Fla.

A: The value of a piece of currency, like most collectibles, is based on several factors, including both condition and rarity. All genuine Confederate currency has some value, but most of the smaller bills are extremely com-mon. An exception is the $500 note, which generally is worth from $200 to $400 depending on condition. To find out how much your $20 note is worth, you should consult an established coin dealer in your area. If that is not pos-sible, one of the better references is Confederate States Paper Money: Civil War Currency From the South by Arlie R. Slabaugh, available for $21.27 at amazon.com. If you have access to a computer, you also might check out questions and answers about Confederate money at ask.com.

• • •Q: I have a Gravely Cultivator, Model D, which was originally used by

my grandpa more than a century ago. I wonder if it is worth anything. -- George, Sackville, N.B., Canada

A: I found several cultivators in American Farm Collectibles: Identifica-tion and Price Guide by Russell E. Lewis (Krause, $24.99). According to Lewis, he found a vintage cultivator at an Amish farm sale that sold for $25. Ones pictured in this reference include an early primitive spike-tooth cultivator ($10), a riding cultivator ($65) and an Oliver cultivator and sulky plow ($125). Even though I did not find a Gravely Cultivator, I suspect it might be worth in the $75 to $150 range. The fact that your cultivator has a gasoline engine makes it more attractive as a collectible.

***Q: I have a Hummell anniversary clock in the Goose Girl pattern. My

husband paid $200 for it in 1995, and I wonder how much it might be worth in today’s market. -- Carrie, Yazoo City, Miss.

A: One of the better price guides, “M.I. Hummel Figurines, Flates, Min-iatures & More” by Robert L. Miller (Portfolio Press, $24.85), places the value of your clock at about $225.
