• There has been a lot of debate about whetherolder drivers should be required to pass driving testsin order to renew their licenses, with failing sightand diminished judgment being cited as reasonsfor the more stringent requirement. However, statistics tend to indicate that, as a group, teenagers are the more dangerous drivers, withtheir auto-accident death rate roughly triple thatof the elderly.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had acid refluxfor quite some time, and doctors have prescribeddifferent medicines, the last being omeprazole.Medicines were not relieving the burning pain. The best advice came from an online messageboard that said to “sleep on your left side.” Fig-uring it wouldn’t hurt to try this method, I begansleeping on my left side. Once my body learned tostay in that position, the pain does not bother menow at all at night. Why don’t doctors share suchsimple methods for relief rather than prescribingmedications? Please pass this information on toothers. — N.S.

ANSWER: When it works, a change in sleep-ing position is a simple way to deal with a bigproblem. It doesn’t work for everyone. In fact, itworks for only a few, but it’s still valuable adviceand is something that should be suggested moreoften. A change in sleeping position also can workfor snoring. Sleeping on the side, right or left, canopen up the throat and stop snoring. Redundantthroat tissue, like a reed in a wind instrument, liesbehind snoring. Sewing a pocket in the back ofthe pajamas and putting either a tennis ball or amarble in it keeps snorers off their backs.

Other self-help tips for GERD (gastroesoph-ageal reflux disease, heartburn or acid indiges-tion — all are the same condition) include stay-ing away from foods that cause it. Onions, garlic, coffee, carbonated beverages, alcohol, chocolate, fried and fatty foods, citrus fruits and juices, to-mato sauces, peppermint, spearmint and spicyfoods are notorious troublemakers.

Sleeping with the head of the bed elevated isanother way to keep stomach acid in the stomach.Prop 6- or 8-inch blocks under the posts at the

Sleep Position andHeartburn

head of the bed. In this position, gravity keepsstomach acid in the stomach.

Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, andsaliva is a natural antacid.

Don’t wear tight garments or tight belts, bothof which promote acid reflux. I managed to getthrough this answer without mentioning a singlemedicine, not even Tums.

The booklet on GERD — heartburn — providesan insight into this common malady and its treat-ment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr.Donohue — No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (nocash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’sprinted name and address. Please allow four weeksfor delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: There seems to be a

vaccine for everything except strep throat. My kidsget it at the drop of a hat. Their pediatrician claimsthat tonsillectomies don’t work. Is there a possi-bility of a vaccine? — K.T.

ANSWER: There is a possibility of a strep vac-cine. Doctors currently are working on it.

Is the doctor sure that these repeated sore throatsare strep throats? The only definite proof is a cul-ture of the throat or specific tests for the strep germ. Most sore throats are viral-caused.

If a child has severe and frequent strep throats, removing the tonsils lessens the number of infec-tions. “Frequent” means seven or more infectionsin one year or five or more in the preceding twoyears.

letters, but he will incorpo-rate them in his columnwhenever possible. Readersmay write him or request anorder form of availablehealth newsletters at P.O.Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475.

Many places in the country that don’t typicallyexperience harsh winter weather have seen recordsbroken for low temperatures and snowfall. Even ifyou’re used to hard winters, it makes sense to checkthe mid-winter condition of your home because win-ter isn’t over yet.

From a distance, check your roof with binoculars. Are any shingles missing? Look carefully around sky-lights, vents and chimneys.

While you’re outside, check to see if the dryer ventis closed. If it’s stuck in the open position, it createsaccess for cold air and creatures. If you haven’t drainedthe outside faucet, it’s worthwhile to do so even ifyou live in an area that is generally warm. Checkdownspouts to make sure they’re aimed away fromthe house and that water hasn’t accumulated next tothe foundation.

If you have an attic, check inside for any wet spotson the plywood. If the attic is especially cold, con-sider putting down another layer of insulation. (Ifyou’re going to do it yourself, get guidance at thehardware store about whether you need insulationbatts with or without the vapor barrier. In the wrongplace, that vapor barrier can cause moisture damageto the rafters.) Hold a lighter around the attic accessto see if there are any drafts.

Use that same lighter around windows and doors.Seal windows inside with a clear plastic sheeting kit,the kind that shrinks with a hair dryer, or put up insu-lated drapes. Install a draft guard at the bottom ofexterior doors.

If you have an unheated basement, consider in-stalling heat tape around the water pipes. Read theinstructions carefully: Tape wrapped over itself is afire hazard. Heat tape will only add a very smallamount to your electric bill, especially when com-pared to the cost of fixing any frozen and crackedpipes. At the same time, check the heating ductwork.Look for air leaks and seal them with foil tape. (Oddlyenough, duct tape doesn’t seem to do well in this in-stance.) Consider adding insulation to ductwork: Overhalf the value of the heated air is lost before it getsinto the rooms above if ducts aren’t insulated.

Check the basement for leaks or moisture. Run adehumidifier if necessary to keep mold from gettingstarted.

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

One of my neighbors recently received a phone callfrom a well-known charity organization asking for do-nations. At least she thought it was the same organiza-tion calling. It wasn’t. It was a scam, with the thievesusing well-known charity names to bilk people out ofmoney.

Rule of thumb: If someone is pressuring you to makea purchase or donation by phone, hang up. It’s your phoneand you can take charge of whom you’re willing to talkto. Unless you make the call, you can’t be sure who’s atthe other end.

The Internet continues to be a nightmare of potentialscams if you accidentally put in too much informationor if you make a purchase online.

Rule of thumb: Have two e-mail addresses. Use onefor family and friends. Use a second one for everythingelse and where an e-mail address is required.

Not all scams arrive by telephone or mail. Sometimesthey come right to your door. The coming 2010 Censusis going to be a problem in some respects in that thescammers will take that opportunity to knock on yourdoor and ask for information. Or, they could send fraudu-lent e-mail that appears to be from the U.S. Census Bu-reau. Look at the Census site (www.census.gov) and readwhat you can expect if someone from the Census comesto your door or sends e-mail.

Rule of thumb: The Census Bureau won’t send youanyone to your door asking for your Social Security num-ber, credit-card information, debit-card PIN codes orpersonal information. If you receive e-mail that lookslike it might be from the Census Bureau, don’t take anychances. Delete it, without clicking on any links in thee-mail. If you have questions about Census e-mail youreceive or someone who has come to your door, call theCensus Bureau at 1-800-392-6975 or 1-800-523-3205.

January 28 - February 3, 2010

I’ve been around (“round, round, get around, I get around”).Officially.On a recent Saturday night, the National Motorsports Press

Association inducted four into its Hall of Fame, and I knowevery one of them. In the past, there were always the hom-ages to antiquity, the long-overdue elections of heretofore over-looked icons. Now thatRoger Penske, Jack

Roush, Rusty Wallace and Robert Yates have joined the NMPA Hall, Iguess it gives me some standing in the antiquity category, too.

I don’t have much in the way of outlandish anecdotes to pass along inregard to Penske. Alone of the four, my interaction with Roger has alwaysbeen somewhat formal. I like him. I admire him. But that’s no fun.

Roush? When his name comes up, I often think of the Busch brothers, both of whom began racing within his vast domain and both of whomwere “vocabularically affected” by the verbose Mr. Roush, who has sel-dom seen a word of more than three syllables that he didn’t adopt. TheBusch brothers, particularly when they were younger, were so impressedby Roush’s “big words” that they tried to emulate him, or that’s alwaysbeen my theory.

The difference, of course, is that Jack tends to know what those wordsmean, and neither Kurt nor Kyle generally does. Kurt’s linguistic offenseswould rank him somewhere close to Norm Crosby or Bo Dietl, as he hasbeen known to “circumference the track” and be proud of “how we’vebeen able to solidify the solidity of our team.” Kyle? Less so, but he hasalso contributed to mild unrest in the tomb of Noah Webster.

Rusty Wallace? The Emperor of Exaggeration. He’s always been a walk-ing, talking racing story in need of fact checking. Rusty doesn’t intention-ally stretch the truth; he just thinks optimistically. The press conferencehad barely started when Rusty matter-of-factly said he had been in Canadafour hours earlier. Pretty fast plane. Possible — but when one factors in allthe time needed before and after one actually climbs into the plane, even aprivate plane — unlikely. By the way, I’m fairly sure someone could’vemade a killing in Vegas betting on Rusty giving the evening’s shortestspeech. That was a bigger upset than Appalachian State over Michigan.

The longest speech was Jeff Hammond’s name-dropping introductionof Roush, for whom he once worked for, oh, 10 minutes or so. I have noidea how that idea transpired.

Penske was all grace and humility. Roush and Yates rambled. Rustywas probably the MVP of the evening.

Yates requires special attention. Through 2007, when he turned overhis race team to son Doug, Yates always seemed to be in sync with signalsfrom outer space. Robert is obviously immensely intelligent, so much sothat oft times guys like me just have no idea what he is talking about.Below are a couple “Yatesisms” from 2005.

“So we’ve really, through the years, have cowboyed our teams withthat, and certainly it’s turned into an engineering model anymore.”

Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston(N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year bythe National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. His blogNASCAR This Week (http://nascar.rbma.com) features all of hisreporting on racing, roots music and life on the road. E-mailMonte at [email protected].

© 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Gee Whiz, I Know All These GuysHe also said of rival car owner Roush’s teams that they “try to get the beach down every street avail-

able, and whoever gets there quickest, they can all jump on that.”Yates has never been as uproariously nutty as Kurt Busch (“We have heavy hearts in the backs of our

minds.”). He specializes in sentences that are, to the non-brilliant-mad-scientist set, indecipherable.Which, of course, is why I always enjoyed listening to him over the years. I’m in it for the humor most

of the time.

• “Here’s how to keep pet hair out of drainswhen bathing pets indoors, which is somethingwe have to do when the weather is cold. Wefind that a wad of steel wool pushed into thedrain will catch all the hairs. It’s easy to removethe whole thing. I place it in a dish to drain, and when it’s dry, I can just shake the hairsinto the trash. I save it in a zipper-top bag forjust this purpose, as it can be used over andover again.” — R.G. in Michigan

• If you have coffee mugs or teacups that arestained inside, rub the insides with a little bit ofdishwasher detergent. Rinse well and dry.

• “I have saved an old hairbrush, and I keep itby my clothes dryer. I’m able to remove lint

from the trap easily using the brush. I also canrun it over the top of the clothes dryer to pickup stray lint that falls off the trap as I amcleaning it. And it helps to run a wet towel overboth the clothes washer and dryer to keepthem clean. I do this as I am washing towels.”— I.L. in Kansas

• Make sure you limit the use of your bathroomfans during the winter, as they pump yourwarmed air outside.

• “Clean plastic milk jugs well with soap andhot water. Dry very well (you can use a hairdryer to make sure they are completely dryinside). Use them to store dry baking goods.Use a funnel to transfer flour, sugar, salt, etc.from large packages to the jugs, then storethem in your pantry or a closet. Cat Fight Won’t EndDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two indoor cats, a

male and female, both fixed. A few months ago a fightbroke out between them and a neighbor cat that ap-proached them on the screened porch. Even though thefight was with the neighbor cat, my cats “Bull” and“Sally” have been getting into vicious fights with eachother ever since, with Sally instigating them. I thoughtthey were getting better recently, but the fighting hasbroken out again, and now I’m noticing urine markingin the front room as well. How can I keep the peacehere? — Melanie, via e-mail

DEAR MELANIE: It will be very difficult to rekindleyour cats’ friendship, but you can forge a peace treatybetween the two. Temple Grandin, in her excellent book“Animals Make Us Human” (Houghton MifflinHarcourt), discusses cat fights and offers some ideasfor resolving them.

cat, probably Sally, could not get to the neighbor cat, soshe turned that aggression on her companion.

Immediately after a fight, the cats must be separated— put in different areas of the house. For some cats, atemporary separation is enough to reduce the aggres-siveness and restore calm. But for your cats, a gradualreintroduction will be necessary as it’s clear the aggres-sion is still there.

Put the aggressive cat (Sally) into a carrier and thenlet Bull come into the same room. If Sally starts hissingand spitting, put a blanket over the carrier. Remove theblanket when Sally calms down. Gradually increase theamount of time the carrier with Sally inside is in thesame room as Bull.

At the same time, consider giving both cats anti-anxi-ety medication prescribed by their veterinarian. Hope-fully, they will stop fighting with a gradual reintroduc-tion to each other, but if they don’t, you will need tokeep them separated.
