You've got a green thumb, and it certainly shows.Your home is filled with plants of all types, andyour yard is lush with vegetation. You've devotedmany hours to creating a beautiful lawn and gar-den and have tackled almost every part of your land-

scape, except for that small hillside near thecreek. You planted grass there, and you mow itregularly, but that's as far as you have gotten.

As with any garden, selecting the right plantsfor the environment is important. There is a riskof erosion with a hillside, so you will want tomake certain that you select some plants thatwill help keep the soil intact. Deep-rooted plantswill work well for that as will somegroundcovers.

As you are selecting plants, take their lightand water requirements into consideration. Ifthe hillside is shaded and wet, then you willwant to select plants that can grow in low-light,moist conditions. If it is sunny and dry, thenyou will want to select plants that can grow insunny, dry conditions.

Once you have zeroed in on some plants foryour hillside garden, you will need to devise aplan for their placement. Since you are dealingwith a hillside and want to prevent erosion, youmay want to try terracing. Using stone blocksor some other material, you can create a seriesof terraces in the hillside. The plants will sitflat on the terraces, allowing you to water themeasily and more efficiently. If you have trees inyour hillside garden, you may want to create amoat around the bases to prevent water runoff.

Depending upon the severity of the slope, you may need to take additional measures toprevent erosion. You may want to build a re-taining wall or add some boulders or rocks, bothof which will retain the soil. To complete yourgarden, you may want to add a few decorativetouches, like a bench or a statue.

Gardens can be created on hillsides. It justtakes a little time and thought. Put in the effort, and you're sure to be pleased with the results.

• A man who worked as a blacksmith in a smallRussian village found what he was told was a

dummy cannon shell that had been used fortraining purposes, and he decided it wouldmake a great anvil. Unfortunately, it turns outthat the shell wasn’t a dummy after all; itexploded, killing the blacksmith — but not untilafter he’d been using it for 10 years.

• Those who study such things say that famedGerman composer Ludwig von Beethovenwas a coffee drinker who was very pickyabout his java. Evidently, exactly 60 coffeebeans had to be ground for each cup — andhe would insist on having them counted outevery time.

On a sunny afternoon in the garage area of Las Vegas MotorSpeedway, ex-champions David Pearson and Tony Stewart got toknow each other.

At the time, Pearson was 70 years old, Stewart 33. Pearson’s lastchampionship occurred in 1969, when what is now Nextel Cup wasreferred to as Grand National and there were no races in Las Vegas.

Perhaps more than any of his contemporaries, though, Stewart isa throwback to the days when dinosaurs named Pearson, RichardPetty, Cale Yarborough and Bobby Allison ruled the earth. Earth, atthe time, mainly consisted of the South.

Pearson, who won 105 races, was leisurely strolling around withanother notable resident of Spartanburg, S.C., former car owner andace mechanic Walter “Bud” Moore. As luck would have it, they hap-pened to be in front of the stall where Stewart’s No. 20 Chevroletrested, shortly after the end of a practice session and as Stewart wasclimbing out of his orange car.

“Do you know Tony Stewart?” I asked Pearson.“I’ve met him,” he said. “I don’t know him. I know he can sure

enough drive a race car.”“I think you’d like him,” I said. “Hang on a minute.”I then walked over in front of the car, where Stewart was discuss-

ing various matters of technical significance with his crew chief, GregZipadelli.

“David Pearson’s out there,” I said to Stewart. “Want to say hello?”“Give me a minute,” said Stewart.I walked back out and started talking with Moore, about whose

teams I used to write, and Pearson, the hero of my youth. Pearsonlooks as if he could climb right back into a stock car and run 500miles. He seems far more robust than a man who underwent open-heart surgery a few years back. He has the same barrel chest andbroad shoulders he boasted when he was winning 11 races in 18tries in 1973.

After a few minutes of chitchat, though, the proud ex-championwas getting a little restless. With a small sense of urgency, I excusedmyself and returned to the garage stall, where Stewart had beenintercepted by someone else.

“Hey, Tony,” I said, “the best stock-car racer who ever lived is outthere, and I don’t think I’d make him wait much longer.”

Stewart looked up. “Don’t let him get away,” he said. “I’ll be rightthere.”

Thirty seconds may have passed before Stewart strode out intothe desert sunshine.

“Hey,” he said, shaking Pearson’s hand, “I need you to drive mycar for me at Darlington. I ain’t worth a damn at that track.”

Pearson didn’t flinch. “All you got to do is drive that thing as highon the track as you can get it,” he said.

“That’s what I’m doing,” Stewart said, smiling.“You ought to have driven it when it was hard,” replied Pearson,

who won there a record 10 times. “It’s easy now.”By this time, a small army of photographers had descended. After

a reasonable period of “photo ops” taken while they chatted, Stewartand Pearson walked over to the Joe Gibbs Racing transporter andwent inside to chat a while longer. Pearson came out with an

WhenLegends

Meet

autographed photo for his grandson, aptly named David.Say what you want about Stewart, but he is nothing if not mindful

of the past and respectful of its heroes. At any given time that he isn’tembroiled in high-level discussions on just how he’s going to manageto win the next race, a visit to Stewart’s transporter will find him talkingshop with a Red Farmer or a Donnie Allison. Stewart feels at home inthe company of the hardscrabble men who preceded him.

No one needs to remind Pearson of how great he was. He’s aproud man, but he’s not one to elaborate on his great works and deeds.

Pearson grew up in a textile-mill village, and when he rose to promi-nence, he knew well the feeling of being looked down upon by thesociety folks. I wasn’t kidding when I told Stewart he was the beststock-car racer ever to strap on a helmet. That’s my opinion and it’sunlikely to change.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please save my

life. I was diagnosed with hepatitis C five

years ago. Tests now say I need treatment.

I am scared to death of treatment, about

which I have heard horror stories. I have

an older husband who will not make it

without me. I feel great and have terrific

energy. I am 59. Is there something other

than the standard treatment I can take?

— S.D.

ANSWER: Infection with the hepatitis Cvirus leads to chronic liver infection in 85percent of patients. However, illnessdoesn’t appear until 10 to 20 years afterinfection. At that time, about 20 percentof infected people develop liver cirrhosis, and 1 percent to 4 percent come downwith liver cancer. That means 75 percentof patients do not develop serious liverdisease.

Treatment is necessary when evidenceof the virus can be found in the blood andwhen the liver shows changes thatindicate cirrhosis will be a likely outcome. Most of the time, that’s determinedthrough microscopic examination of livertissue obtained by a needle biopsy.

Who has given you the horror stories oftreatment? It’s not a picnic, but it isn’t asterrifying as it has been portrayed to you.Ribavirin is one of the drugs used. Its worstside effect is anemia, a drop in the redblood cell count. Stopping the drug justabout always returns the count to normal.Peginterferon is the other drug used intreatment. Its most common side effect isflulike symptoms: headache, muscle pain, fever, nausea and vomiting.

Appropriate medicines can controlthese symptoms. It also can produce adrop in both the white and red blood cell

counts. It hasaggravated depression

and given a few people thoughts ofsuicide. Hair-thinning is another possibleside effect. The list of potential side effectsis long. Most resolve when the drug isstopped. And most patients completetherapy without having to greatly modifytheir activities during treatment.Peginterferon is injected under the skinonce a week. People learn how to injectthemselves. There are no other effectivetreatments.

The booklet on hepatitis describeshepatitis A, B and C, and their treatments.Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr.Donohue — No. 503W, Box 536475,Orlando, FL 32853-6475. • • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would

appreciate any information on lipomas.

In recent years, I’m getting more of them.

I am 79 and did not have them until fiveor six years ago. I have a large one in themiddle of my back and a couple on mythighs. I have recently gotten two smallones on my lower arm. — M.B.

ANSWER: Lipomas are noncancerousfatty tumors. About 1 percent of thepopulation has one or more of them. Noone knows the cause, so preventivetreatment also remains unknown. However, if they cause pain by pressingon adjacent structures or if they areunsightly, they can be removed withoutmuch trouble, often as an outpatient.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am appalled, angered andsaddened by the response from Dori to the parent who wroteyou after her children’s goldfish died because they didn’t takecare of it. She said the children were set up to fail. Wow.

I hope this person does not have children. If she believesthat a child is set up for failure, the child will believe he or sheis a failure and will not try to improve and grow mentally. Icannot see how a parent could feel right by instilling this in achild’s mind!

So, a goldfish was not cared for, and died. While this is sadand maybe could have been avoided, it is not completelythe child’s fault. For one thing, goldfish are very susceptibleto disease and overeating, which can cause death. Parentsshould always supervise the care of a pet, for sure, but thatdoes not mean taking complete care of it.

Children need to learn structure and respect for living things.A goldfish is a very good start. They mainly need clean water, nutritional food and possibly occasional medicine. Childrenhave to learn about their pet, and a goldfish can be a greatstart with the proper supervision from parents and a book toread (or parents can read to them) about the needs of thatspecific pet.

As for the parent’s question about whether to get anotherpet, I think she could get the child a hamster or Guinea pig. This pet would be much more interactive and enjoyable. Iknow that if the parents supervise and stick to the structure, the child will take care of the pet. — Lora S., via e-mail

Where’s the best place to find information about lifeinsurance? Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine hasnamed www.insure.com as the best site for life insuranceinformation two years in a row. For good reason, too —the site is packed with must-know information, and notjust about life insurance.

Here’s just a sample of what you’ll find atwww.insure.com:

• In this shaky economy, it’s not too much of a stretchto wonder if our insurance companies are going to gounder. Fear not. Just as bank customers are protected ifa financial institution fails, most state have guaranty fundsto handle insurance claims, up to a certain limit.

• Insure.com has a number of useful tools, such as car-crash safety ratings. Select your vehicle by make, modeland year, and you’ll get star ratings in front and sideimpacts, as well as rollovers.

• Need to understand annuities? Insure.com covers notonly the basics, but provides in-depth information onaccessing money before retirement and what to bewarein a sales pitch.

• Need health insurance, but you’re already sick? Lookat the list of 12 ways to get health insurance. Oneparticularly inventive way is to declare yourself a “groupof one.” This varies by state, but in many locations insurersare required to sell guaranteed issue policies to smallgroups.

• Before you buy a policy for any reason — home, health, auto — check the company’s ratings. You cansearch the site by company name or by ratings. Theratings will tell you the financial shape a company is in.

• If you need a refresher, check the section on identitytheft to make sure you’ve covered all your bases.

• Wondering if you should call your insurance companyabout a small claim? Even if you decide not to file a claim, your call will be recorded and a note made that will stayin your file for seven years. Too many of these “losses,”and you could end up with a higher rate, even without aclaim.

• Need to reduce your costs on house coverage?Check the “10 Ways to Save on Home Insurance” article.

• If you have a complaint about your insurer or aquestion about state insurance laws, click the StateInformation link for contacts in all states.

Q: My great-uncle traveled throughout Asiaduring the early years of the past century. Hebegan collecting Chinese snuff bottles in about1910, and I have inherited his collection. Howcan I dispose of it? — Laura, Homestead, Fla.

A: I suggest you contact the InternationalChinese Snuff Bottle Society at http://snuffbottle.org. Two established dealers areMichael C. Hughes, 116 E. 65th St., 3-D, NewYork, NY 10065; and Susie Lorin, Asiantiques, P.O.Box 1707, Winter Park, FL 32792.

A: What you have is a set of dishes marketedfor children. The fact that it is marked RoyalDoulton means that it is a fairly good set. TheRoyal Doulton Bunnykins pieces and those that

feature the work of Mabel Lucie Attwell areparticularly prized by collectors. A Bunnykinsbreakfast service that includes a bowl, plateand mug from the 1930s generally sells in the$50 to $80 range. I suspect your Little TommyTucker set would be worth aboutthe same.

• • •Q: I have what I believe to be an

A: It depends on whether it is trulyan original or a later reprint. Manyhistorical headlines have beenreprinted as souvenirs, and they aregenerally worth only a few dollarseach. If your paper is one of theoriginals, it would, of course, beworth more. To learn more aboutyour paper, I suggest you contactan expert, Timothy Hughes, P.O. Box3636, Williamsport, PA 17701. As a
