• “The first time we painted the walls in our house, one of us had stepped in some paint while wearingsocks and, not realizing it, had tracked some painton the carpet. Since then, we always go barefootwhen painting, since we can feel it if we step inpaint and can clean it off before it gets trackedaround the house.” — M.M. in Florida

• “If you have leftover bits of fabric that is pretty orstill useful, save it in a box or bag for other projects.

You can use fun fabric scraps to patch kids’ clothesor for doll clothing. They also can be used to makesachets or for gift decoration. Quilters mightappreciate these scraps for their projects.” — E.D. inMassachusetts

• “When threading a needle, spray the end of thethread with hairspray to make it stiffer and to holdthe fibers together.” — O.A. in New Mexico

• It’s important to clean your exterior windows andscreens at least yearly, and many people do this inthe spring. Here’s a good way to make putting thoseclean screens back up a little easier. As you removethem, number each one on the inside with apermanent marker. Number each window casingwith the same number as well. Do this in a discreet

place. When the screens are ready, you’ll knowinstantly which window to return them to.

• Unlined leather gloves can be easily washed. Justput them on and wash your gloved hands with alittle warm water and mild detergent. Rinse and blot, then smooth into shape to dry. Lay on a flat towelto dry, flipping several times during the dryingprocess.

Don’t Cage CatDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a precious little kitty (1 year old) that I got

from a rescue that has taken a liking to relieving herself on my bed! What do I doother than keeping her caged? — Frustrated in Philadelphia

DEAR FRUSTRATED: Take her out of the cage! I have a good idea whyshe’s relieving herself on your bed. I don’t know much about your living situa-tion, but cats should not be caged or crated for long periods of time, and only toprotect them from harm — not as a barrier or punishment.

Cats are very different from dogs, and using a cage will not “train” her to doanything but be more angry. And cats will express anger and frustration in a waythat you can’t miss. Her relieving habit is most likely directly related to beingstuck in the cage. She knows full well that you sleep on that bed!

I’ve had only one cat do the same to me, and it was entirely my fault. I acci-dentally shut him in my bedroom as I left for work. Cut off from my other cat,his food and his litter box, he expressed his displeasure quite clearly. But it onlyhappened once. I made sure he was out of the room from then on before closingthe door, and he never again was put in that position of having only one way tocommunicate.

If you don’t want your cat to soil the bed, keep her outside of your bedroom.Even if you’re in a studio and can’t close off the bedroom, you can screen thebed (literally — a roll of window screening at the hardware store costs less than

10 dollars) to keep her away. Butshe needs relatively free reinaround the rest of the house orapartment, access to food andher litter box, and a view of theoutside. And put the cage into acloset, out of sight. Don’t use itunless you’re transporting her tothe vet.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — DanicaPatrick, the only woman ever to win an Indy-car race, made a successful debut in stock carsby finishing sixth in the Lucas Oil Slick Mist200, an Automobile Racing Club of Americarace at Daytona In-ternational Speed-

way run on Feb. 6.The event, won for the

sixth time by Pennsylvaniadriver Bobby Gerhart, pro-vided Patrick with neededexperience in the Daytonadraft.

“It’s a little harder than Ithought it would be, but I feltreally good,” she said. “Iworked on closing that dis-tance between two carlengths and being right on

them at a half a car length because, with my Indy-carexperience, I thought two car lengths was on them butit’s not, which is understandable why the accidents areso big because you have nowhere to go because you areliterally nose to tail.

“I think that, for a long, long time to come, it will besomething that you get better and better at,” said Patrick, who will turn 28 on March 25.

“A lot of these drivers are new to me. I don’t know alot of them,” she said. “There are a lot of nice guys outthere, and its nice to be around some good drivers.”

A native of Roscoe, Ill., and resident of Phoenix, Ariz.,Patrick drives for JR Motorsports, which is aligned withHendrick Motorsports, NASCAR’s premier team. TonyEury Jr., Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s first cousin and former crewchief, is helping her learn the ropes in stock-car racing.

“He’s a very good crew chief,” she said. “In IndyCar,our engineers are crew chiefs. I’m lucky to have greatengineer-crew chiefs in both places. Tony’s very talented.... He knows what he’s doing. I tell him what the car isdoing and he fixes it.

“For me, it’s a matter of learning from him and understanding about thecar. The difference between Indy car and NASCAR is, a lot of things arespoken in opposites, so it’s been a little bit confusing to me, but I’m gettingfamiliar. I’m getting into the car setup side as much as I can. It’s hard todigest it all at once, but it will take a while.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I got a sudden attack ofdizziness that landed me in bed. I couldn’t stand. Finally, with the help of my husband, I got to thedoctor, who said I had a viral infection called vesti-bular neuritis. I am taking medicine and am some-what better, but the dizziness isn’t completely gone. Will it go? When? — L.T.

ANSWER: I have to warn readers that the causesof dizziness are diverse, and vestibular neuritis, whilecommon, is only one of many causes. The vestibuleof the inner ear has three fluid-filled canals that worklike a carpenter’s balance, that gadget whose centercontains a fluid-containing tube with a bubble in it.The balance tells the carpenter if a piece of wood isaligned. The inner ear canals tell people if they arealigned. They send signals to the brain that keep usbalanced. A viral infection of those canals or of thenerve that sends signals to the brain makes people

Viral Infection CanCause Dizziness

feel like they’ve been put in the spincycle of a washer.

Not only are affected people dizzy, they becomenauseated and often throw up.

Symptoms of vestibular neuritis lessen in two tothree days, but full recovery can take up to six ormore weeks.

A cortisone drug taken within the first three daysof illness can ease symptoms. And medicines likepromethazine relieve dizziness and nausea, but theymake some people so drowsy that they prefer thedizziness.

The booklet on dizziness discusses vestibular neu-ritis as well as the other dizziness causes. Readerscan obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No.801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. En-close a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name andaddress. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Can you give an expla-

nation of and recommendation for cure of a healthproblem I have? Being over the age of 65 and inreasonably good health, I suffer every winter frompainful cracks in my fingertips and the soles of myfeet. — R.V.

ANSWER: The cracking indicates your skin isdrying out. You can restore moisture to your finger-

tips with a light coat —just a dab will do you —of petroleum jelly(Vaseline or anothermoisturizer) before go-ing to bed. Put Band-Aids over your finger-tips, and leave them onall night. You can do thesame during the day, but

it’s a bit inconvenient. In about three days, the cracksshould be filling in. Continue this treatment everythird or fourth night.

The same thing works for the feet. You don’t useBand-Aids, but you do cover your feet with socksbefore going to sleep. Don’t apply petroleum jellyduring the daytime. It might make you somewhatunsteady. It takes longer for feet to heal.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Does the consumption

of foods packaged or wrapped in aluminum foil posea risk for contracting or accelerating Alzheimer’s dis-ease? — M.E.

ANSWER: The answer is no. The brains of someAlzheimer’s patients have more than the usualamount of aluminum. Some have interpreted that asindicating aluminum as a cause. Few scientists holdto that theory.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual let-

ters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible.Readers may write him or request an order form of available healthnewsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

A new study has shown that we seniors take in more infor-mation from the environment. Researchers call it “hyper-en-coding,” when we notice more of what’s going on around usand merge it with other information we’re getting at the sametime. And we’re 30 percent better at it than our younger coun-terparts.

Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re with your daughtertalking to a friend, Mr. Jones, on the street, listening to whathe’s saying. Not only do you listen to him, but you also noticethat he’s wearing a red tie and a blue shirt. Later you say toyour daughter, “I’d like to buy your father a shirt like Mr.Jones was wearing.” To which your daughter will likely re-ply: “What shirt? I didn’t notice it.” Not only that, but if youhappen to spot that same shirt in a store, you’re more likely toremember where you first saw it.

Does this make us wiser? Perhaps. I suspect we’re betterat making decisions because we’ve noticed so much morearound us over time. We understand cause and effect becausewe’ve witnessed events and taken in information, and whennew information is presented, we can tie it to the previousevents we’ve seen.

We’re good at problem solving, likely because of past ex-perience. We take the parts and pieces and put them togetherin ways that our younger counterparts don’t. We tend to getgood grades in classes we take, likely because we rememberold information and tie it to the new.

On the other hand, this reduced ability to filter out extra-neous information can explain why many of us find televi-sion commercials so annoying. Not only do we remember thecontent of the show we’re watching, but we can also recallthe commercial information, repeated over and over.

• It was British journalist Jeremy Campbell who

made the following sage observation:“Computers are good at swift, accurate

computation and at storing great masses ofinformation. The brain, on the other hand, is not

as efficient a number cruncher and its memoryis often highly fallible; a basic inexactness is built

into its design. The brain’s strong point is itsflexibility.”

• More from the files of hangover cures fromaround the world: In Japan, pickled plums arereputed to ease the morning-after ails; in Italy,it’s (quite sensibly) coffee. The Chinese drink

strong green tea, while in the Netherlands it’sthe hair of the dog — the Dutch advocate beeras a remedy. Danes eat salt, while Mexicanseat shrimp (I’ll take the Mexican remedy anyday). Perhaps the oddest remedy is practiced

in Russia: Sufferers there head to the sauna, where they proceed to whip out the toxins with

leafy birch branches. No word on what they

do in winter, when the birches are, presumably, leafless.

• The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System ofInterstate and Defense Highways — better

known as the Interstate Highway System — isthe largest public works project in the history of

the world. At 46,876 miles, it’s also the world’s

largest highway system.
