Q: Is it true that Lindsay Lohan is dating “How IMet Your Mother” star Jason Segel? — Barbara S.,via e-mail

A: Lindsay, who split from girlfriend SamanthaRonson earlier this year, has taken to her Twitter ac-count to dispel all rumors of romance. She brands therumors as ridiculous, stating she was merely “meetingat a co-worker’s home.” As of this writing, the projectthey are working on together is unknown.

• • •Q: I can remember when we had new episodes for

TV shows from fall to spring. Now the networks havewinter finales for their shows. Why is that? — Theo J.,via e-mail

A: There are a few reasons for this new, “winter fi-

nale” trend. One, of course, is money. Many peopleare traveling and very busy during the holiday season,so the networks don’t want to “waste” new episodeswhen fewer people are watching. This is also a goodtime to air holiday-themed programs. Another reasonis they want to give midseason shows a chance to struttheir stuff.

For instance, Fox put “Glee” on hiatus Dec. 9 (toreturn April 13), “Fringe” takes a break on Feb. 4 (toreturn April 1), and “Lie to Me” returns in late springas well. This makes room for shows like the MarkValley action-drama “Human Target,” reality series“Our Little Genius,” thriller “Past Life” and comedy“Sons of Tucson.” Fox is reporting that “‘Til Death”will be back in the new year as well.

• • •Q: I absolutely love Michelle Forbes in just about

every role she is in. What can I watch her in next? —Marti F., Altoona, Pa.

A: Michelle — who turns 45 in January — has quitea full plate. The “PrisonBreak,” “True Blood”and “In Treatment” ac-tress can be seen next onION Television in thedrama “DurhamCounty.” Season Twobegins on Jan. 3, andMichelle comes to theshow as Dr. PenelopeVerrity, an even moredangerous nemesis toMike Sweeney than se-rial killer Ray Prager.Count me in!

• There’s an interesting story behind the name ofthe Caribbean island of Curacao. It seems thatexplorer Amerigo Vespucci had several sailors onhis ship who were very seriously ill with scurvy, sohe dropped them off on the island, assuming theywould die. However, the abandoned sailorsfeasted on fresh fruit, thereby ingesting the vitaminC that cured the disease and saved their lives. The word “curacao” means “cure” in Portuguese.

Road MapQ: My sister has a map of Western New York that

was published in about 1915 by the Automobile Clubof Rochester. It is backed with a type of linen and ap-

pears to be in excellent condition considering its age. What do you think it might be worth? — Nancy, Roch-ester, N.Y.

A: I suggest you contact an expert in the field,Jackie Grace of Grace Galleries, a business that spe-cializes in antique maps. You can contact Jackie atGrace Galleries, The Chart House of Cundy’s Har-bor, 20 West Cundy’s Point Road, Harpswell, ME04079, or e-mail her at [email protected] out the Web site at www.gracegalleries.com.Incidentally, I contacted two collectors who agreedthat your map is probably worth in the $50-$75 range.

• • •Q: I have a Heddon deluxe fishing rod, 4 ounces,

No. 2541. I have searched the Internet and can’t seemto find any information on this two-piece pole withcarrying case. The condition is close to perfect, and Ihope you can help me. — Steve, Newark, N.J.

A: One of the best sources for information aboutfishing reels is The Old Reel Collectors Association, which was founded in 1990 with the purpose of pro-viding “education through the collection and distri-bution of historical and technical data regarding fish-ing reels, their development and their inventors andmanufacturers from the earliest times through thepresent day.” The contact information for the club ishttp://www.orcaonline.org, or e-mail [email protected]. This is an excellentgroup, and I am certain that its members can help you.

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

Men, moments and great deeds that will be re-membered from NASCAR, circa 2009:

—Jimmie Johnson became the first driver inNASCAR history to win four consecutive champi-onships. He broke a tie with Cale Yarborough, whowon three straight(1976-78).

—At age 50, Mark Martin, competing full-time for the firsttime in three years, finished second in the Sprint Cup stand-ings. Martin, who has never won a championship, was therunner-up for the fifth time in his career.

—Kyle Busch won a total of 20 races in NASCAR’s so-called three “major touring series”: four in Sprint Cup, ninein Nationwide and seven in Truck.

—Brad Keselowski pulled an upset at Talladega that re-quired him to tangle with Carl Edwards on the final straightof the final lap. Edwards’ Ford left the ground, ripped throughthe catch fencing and tumbled over and over numerous times.Rules were changed and fencing raised and bolstered for thelatter race at the track.

—Joey Logano’s New Hampshire victory made him theyoungest driver ever to win at NASCAR’s top level.

—Hendrick Motorsports took the top three spots in the Cupstandings, with Johnson first, Martin second and Jeff Gordonthird.

—The sport’s most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., hadthe worst season of his career and was the only HendrickMotorsports driver who failed to make the Chase.

• Go Green Tip: Here’s a little-practiced fact in the lifeof today’s fashion: Many clothing items can be repaired.Do it right away, though, so the item can go back intothe usable clothing circulation. The longer it sits, thegreater the odds of it being replaced instead, makingthe original, repairable item just another piece of clutter.

• “Use the clothes-detergent cap (to measuredetergent), then wash it in the very same load. The capwill stay nice and clean — no liquid soap everywhere.”— Mrs. B., via e-mail

• “If you have a noisy bed after you purchased a newmattress and box springs (it never was noisy before), itmight be your bed rails. Cover them with carpet. Wenailed ours on all over, which was easy, and the noisestopped. Our box spring apparently was not made verywell at the bottom. This really works.” — C.F. in Indiana

• “Save the zippered plastic bags that bedding andcurtains come in to store or organize items. My youngchildren often need a clean change of clothes whenwe are on the go. I pack complete extra outfits(including underwear and socks) for them in the smallbags. They work perfectly. The bags are sturdy andreusable for years. I keep these packages tucked awayin the car or in their school backpacks, and I send oneto the sitter. I also keep one in the car filled with socksfor those summer days when they are wearing sandalsand we decide to go to an indoor play place.” — A.S.,via e-mail

• If you receive a set of scented soaps for the holidays, you can get a longer use out of them as drawer scentsbefore you use them as soap. Tuck each one into a clothwrapper and stick it in a drawer. When the scent startsto wear out, use the soap.

Winter Pet Safety at the New YearBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As a Southerner re-cently transplanted to the Midwest, I’m worriedabout how the cold weather will affect my Chi-huahua, “Freddie.” Will I be able to take him out-side for walks? — Kylie in Chicago

DEAR KYLIE: Smaller dogs do have a hardertime in bitterly cold weather, so I would carefullygauge when and how often Freddie can go out-side. Ask neighbors and friends for advice on tak-ing dogs out in the cold. Meantime, a few basicsshould be followed for cold-weather pet care.

• Make sure Freddie has a warm bed to curl upin, and that he stays well-hydrated during wintermonths.

• Purchase a doggie sweater and booties andmake sure Freddie wears them every time you gooutside.

• Keep him on a leash during walks, and moni-tor him carefully at all times.

• If Freddie is shivering or limping, take himinside immediately, warm him up, and inspect hispaws for cuts or frostbite (the frostbitten area willbe colder than the rest of his paw).

• For really cold, snowy or icy days, keep a peepad inside for Freddie to use, and even designatean indoor “go” area if possible.

Sweaters or wraps and booties are available atlocal pet stores or online. For indoor eliminating, some small-dog owners actually use litter boxes.

It may take a little training but can be invaluableon really cold days.

Finally, talk to Freddie’s veterinarian about yourconcerns. He or she will have valuable advice onkeeping Freddie healthy and happy as you bothacclimate to the colder climate.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I remember readingsomething you wrote a long time ago about theproper way to breathe for people with chronic ob-structive pulmonary disease. I didn’t need the in-formation then. I do now. Until recently, I smokedmore than a pack of cigarettes a day, for 35 years. It caught up with me all of a sudden. I have COPD.I need you to repeat those recommendations again. Will you? — T.R.

ANSWER: Sure. (For readers: Chronic obstruc-tive pulmonary disease, COPD, is emphysema andchronic bronchitis.)

Pursed-lip breathing is one technique that helps.Draw your lips into the whistling position whenyou breathe out. The lips are in the right position ifthe outgoing air makes a hissing sound as it passesthrough them. Pursed-lip breathing keeps the air-ways opened so all stale air is emptied from thelungs. In people with COPD, on exhalation, theairways collapse. That leaves them partially filledwith old air containing little oxygen. By getting allthe oxygen-low air out of the lungs, fresh air fillsthem and a person isn’t shortchanged on oxygen.

Exhale slowly, twice the length of time it takesto inhale.

You have to train yourself to use your diaphragmto its maximum capacity. The diaphragm is the hori-zontal muscle that separates the chest from the ab-

domen. It’s the principal breathing muscle. Whenthe diaphragm moves downward, air rushes intothe lungs.

To make sure you’re using your diaphragm, lieon your back with your hands on your abdomen.Breathe normally. When you breathe in, your handsshould move out as the diaphragm descends. Youhave to consciously use the diaphragm with eachinhalation until it becomes second nature for you.

Another trick that makes more room for air inthe lungs is to bend a bit forward at the waist whenyou stand or walk.

The booklet on chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease explains emphysema and chronic bronchi-tis in depth, and howthey’re treated. • • •DEAR DR.

DONOHUE: I worryabout my daughter. Sheis on her own at age 25and works a demandingjob that requires lots ofovertime. She seems to

catch every illness that comes along. I think herimmune system isn’t working. Can you suggest afood, supplement or vitamin that could build it up?— C.R.

ANSWER: The immune system is often re-ferred to and often misunderstood. White bloodcells are part of it. Some white cells attack incom-ing germs. Others make antibodies that coat germsand lead to their death. Lymph nodes, the spleenand the liver trap germs and inactivate them. Theseare some of the parts of the immune system.

I don’t know of a vitamin, a supplement or afood that bolsters the immune system unless thebody has a specific vitamin deficiency. A well-bal-anced diet, banal as that advice is, keeps immu-nity in top performance. Your daughter sounds likeshe could stand some rest. Constant stress weak-ens immunity.
