I n this week’s parsha, we learn about the man who was מקלל - blasphemed the name of Hashem.
Although this was obviously a very serious crime, (it is one of the seven mitzvos that is mandatory for all mankind), Moshe was not sure what his punishment should be. They put him in jail until Moshe would be instructed as to what his punishment would be. י "רש explains that this incident took place at the same time as the person who publicly desecrated Shabbos. He, too, was in jail because Moshe didn't know what his punishment would be. They were not kept together, however, because the Shabbos viola-tor was definitely getting a death sentence, but they weren't sure which one (there were four types). The blasphemer, however, could get death or maybe he wasn’t worthy of death in court and that he would be subject to his punishment in heaven. Rav Henoch Leibowitz asked: “It seems that the question of why they weren't placed together still isn't answered. Even if one person gets death and the other person's punishment is altogether unknown, why can’t we allow them to sit together in jail? “ Rav Leibowitz answered that since it was possible the blasphemer would get no punishment from court, it was unfair that he should be with a man getting death. He might begin to imagine and have agonizing thoughts that he, too ,would be killed, when in reality it might not be so. We should not unnecessarily cause agony, anguish, or frustration to someone else!! All this, even though we are dealing with an evil-doer?! Nevertheless, the Torah is concerned about his feelings, too!! If Hashem is so demanding in our consideration to a person who has rebelled against him, imagine what the expectation is for our friends!!
Honor or remember a loved one by dedicating an issue of the YBH of Passaic-Hillel News which reaches over 400 families per week. Dedications for yahrzteits, refuah sheleymas, etc. are $100 an issue. Call (973) 777-0735 ext. 134 or email [email protected].

T his week’s parsha, Emor, contains many pesukim regarding the Kohanim. The Kohanim merited being the agents of the Jewish Nation, and would perform the Avodah in the Beit
HaMikdash. Therefore, there are many more stringencies which they, the Kohanim, have to abide by. The Pasuk says, "And G-D said to Moshe, say to the Kohanim, the sons of Aaron, and you shall say to them, that you shall not defile yourself through touching a dead body." This also includes that a Kohen cannot be under the same roof as a dead body. The unusual feature about this Pasuk is the repetition of the words "say to the Ko-hanim," and then again "you shall say to them." It seems that once would have been enough. Rashi quotes the Gemara that the repetition should be interpreted as follows. "Say to them" the following:" you, each Kohen, should say to them, their children, not to defile themselves by touching a dead body. This means to say that each Kohen is obligated to teach his children to follow these special laws. This is an important lesson to all Bnei Yisroel. If a parent wants their children to follow the ideals of a Jew, then the children must be taught by their parents to follow these ideals. If we teach our children to act in a way that is respectful, and to live a Jewish life, then we will have fulfilled our obligation that is stated in the Pasuk.

Learning From Our Leaders דברי אלקים חייםRabbi Elie Rothberger (3B)
T he פרׁשה begins with the words:
..“ואמרת להם ... אמֹור אל הּכהנים ּבני אהרן ” Rashi explains that the repetition of the words אמֹור and ואמרת is להזהיר גדֹולים על הקטנים, a charge for the older generation to take care of the younger generation. One homiletic explana-tion of this Rashi is that the responsibility of edu-cating the קטנים, the young, lies on the גדֹולים, the great leaders of our time. We find such an example with Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik. Rav Soloveitchik, also known as the Rav, would often visit the Maimonides School in Boston on Monday and Friday morn-ings. One time, he noticed a young boy in the hallway, who had been sent out of class. The Rav came over to the boy and asked him what had happened? The boy, with tears in his eyes, said that he had been sent out of class for misbe-having. His teacher was reviewing for a Navi test, and the boy felt that he would not be able to pass the test without the benefit of the review. The Rav looked at him and said “I see that you feel bad. Would you like me to review with you?” The boy looked up at the Rav with wonder and asked: “Do you really knowספר יהֹוׁשע?” The Rav smiled and said “I’ve learned it once or twice before. Let’s give it a try.” The boy’s eyes lit up and they be-gan to study. He did quite well on his test, but only later on did he realize the privilege he had to study one on one with the Rav. This is a wonder-ful example of how a גדֹול, a great leader, showed concern for the Torah education of a קטן, a young boy.

1B Visits Rabbi Leiner
Avraham Weiner (2B) asked: “ אחרי הדברים האלה“ —”After what things?” He also asked: “Why did Hashem promise to make Avraham’s children ‘Like the sand and the stars’ after his 10th test, if He promised it already the ’ברית בן הבתרים’?” The next day, he brought us an answer!
Ezra Nissel (2B) asked: “Why does the posuk say “ את?”יחידך אשר אהבת He anticipated Rashi’s question! He
then asked: “Why does the posuk say “אברהם אביו” ? We know that Avraham is the father of Yitzchak.” Ezra went home and, with the help of his Zaidy, he found an answer from the כלי יקר!
Kiki Arochas (2B) asked Rashi’s question: “Who were the “שני נעריו” ?
Daniel Itzhaki (2B) asked: “Why did Avraham need 2 men to travel with him to ארץ המוריה?” Rashi’s question!
When learning about the מן and the בשר that בני ישראלreceived in the מדבר, Eli Karfunkel (4B) asked: “Why did the Torah differentiate in how the פסוקים were written? By the מן, it says לחם before בבקר and by the ”.בשר before the בערב it says ,בשר
Eitan Zoldan (4B) asked: “Why did the פסוק mention the brothers of מרים and not the other women’s brothers?”
Moshe Milchman (4B) asked: “Why does it say that Don’t we know it ?אהרון was the sister of מריםalready?”
Shimon Khayyat (4B) asked: “Why does the פסוק give 2 descriptions of how thin the מן was? We know the Torah doesn’t have extra words.”
I t was a special Shabbos for the talmidim, rabbeim (and their fami-lies) and hanhala. The spirit was high, Divrei Torah abounded,
beautiful Zemiros were sung, delicious food were provided (by the Arochas family), achdus, simcha and all the ingredients for a suc-cessful Shabbaton! Yet there was something more that needed to be added, came a voice from above saying: “We need to have a shalosh seudos for the rabbeim's families and board members, so that the proper hakoras hatov for our staff should be shown. Who else but Dr. Gold would come up with such an idea! It was a warm and inspiring occasion. We thank Rabbi Dr. Bin Goldman for delivering a Divar Torah, which gave much chizuk to all attendees. Thank you, Dr. Gold, for always thinking of ways to better our yeshiva in such caring and thoughtful ways. Thank you, Rabbi Perlstein, for putting together a real bang of a Shabbaton. It will be a difficult one to match for next year, but our motto at YBH is just that, "to go to the next level in all we do with Hashem's help." May we be zocheh to continue having such wonderful opportunities to share with our talmidim and see them enjoy spending quality time with their rabbeim and being uplifted to serve Hashem in the best way they can.
Thank You By Rabbi Leiner

T he second graders started a science unit called “Oscar’s Ocean”, which will introduce
them to learning about various fish, animals, and crustaceans that live in the water. They made passports and wrote postcards to their parents to inform them about the upcoming exciting adven-tures in the ocean. In language arts, the children have been having fun completing projects that will accom-pany their stories for the future Literary Fair. They are looking forward to taking part in the evening program and seeing their work dis-played. The class has been also learning about the 2010 Census and how its results affect them, their families, and the community at large. The children participated in related activities which brought the census to life in the classroom.

W e have been learning a very excit-ing part of Parashas Vayaira, Akai-
das Yitzchok, these past two weeks. On Wednesday, we finished the entire parasha! We are very excited to be making our third siyum this year with dvrei Torah, streamers, balloons, singing, and plenty of food. We can’t wait to begin our next parasha, Chayai Sora, next week!
Chesed Corner
T he concept of doing chesed for others is, Baruch Hashem, in-
grained within our talmidim by the consistent commitment to sensitivity towards others’ needs. That was evidenced, once again, during our Shabbaton. Sev-eral 8th graders are members of the “Goodness Group” that assist dis-abled children every Shabbos. De-spite a schedule conflict with the Oneg Shabbos, they didn’t neglect their responsibility, but rescheduled the Goodness Group for later that day, so that they could still assist those children.

WOW!!!
A picture is worth a thousand words...but since the Shabbaton took place on Shabbos (when else?) and there were no pictures...here come the thousand words. Just kidding!! Actually, thousands of
words wouldn’t do it justice. With great siyata dishmaya, our Boys’ Division Shabbaton was a smash-ing success. Shacharis at YBH was well-attended, and the seder limud that followed was a sight to behold. The kol Torah of hasmodo resonated throughout the Bais Medrash and left us reluctant to end it to be-gin the seuda. What a seuda it was! Achdus, ruach, and a great time for all. Zemiros, Shabbaton Taboo, and a great deal of food (of course) combined for lasting memories. A special thank you to our devoted 8th grade waiters, Mendy Ruder, Avi Brenner, Yonatan Simon, and Eli Held, who truly provided cour-teous and professional service. Onegs galore, There’s so much in store. Games, stories, nosh and fun, It’s nice to spend time with everyone. The effort of all the Rebbeim in planning their class’ oneg group really paid off. The broad smiles on the talmidims’ faces just said it all. What a great Shabbos event! The glue that held everything together and made it all work was…the exemplary middos exhib-ited by our precious talmidim. The sky’s the limit on the recognition our boys earned for their conduct. In every venue, and in every location, our talmidim made us (and you parents, too) proud. At shacha-ris, at the seuda, at the Oneg Shabbos, in shul, in school, and in people’s homes, the results were al-ways exemplary. Way to go, guys! Keep it up! How can we adequately thank our great staff of Rebbeim who invested their hearts and souls, along with their talents, into planning and facilitating the many facets of the Shabbaton. The out-of-town Rebbeim who joined us, along with their families, added so much warmth and geshmak. Their wives and families deserve our thanks for their participation and for their support of all the כוחות our Rebbeim invest in our yeshiva. There are several other special individuals whose contributions were vital in producing a suc-cessful Shabbaton. Thank you to:
Mrs. Radinsky for giving her “all” in preparing for the Shabbaton (and so much else in YBH for that matter). Paper goods, centerpieces for the tables, nosh, etc.
Mr. & Mrs. Arochas for providing delicious food for our seuda. Feeding a large group of hungry young men can be trying, and you did it pleasantly.
The following people, who graciously hosted our classes during Shabbos: Mr. & Mrs. Zoldan – 7th and 8th grades Oneg Shabbos Mr. & Mrs. Schroff – 6th grade Oneg Shabbos Young Israel of Passaic-Clifton – 5th grade Oneg Shabbos Rabbi & Mrs. Feder – 8th grade Seudas Leil Shabbos Mr. & Mrs. Hurwitz – 5th grade Seudas Leil Shabbos

Yom Ha’atzmaut was celebrated by our Boys’ Division with beautiful presentations by our Middle School students. Each class was assigned a city/cities to research and prepare a presentation about. The presentations were done for grades 1—8 at our assembly as follows:
5B—ירושלים 6B—חברון 7B—טבריה/צפת 8B—בית לחם
The presentations turned out nicely, especially the visual displays. Congratulations to all the students who put forth so much effort for this program. Thank you to the PTA for providing delicious blue and white donuts in honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut.

YBH BIKE-A-THON MAY 9TH
10
April 27th , 2009 13 Iyar Dear Parents, The days of Sefiras Haomer are an especially appropriate time to teach our children the importance of providing for those in need. This is an especially meaningful mitzvah when our students provide for children in a similar age bracket. It is even more meaningful when the students get something out of it as well. A “privilege auction” is in the works, and we are requesting full participation from our student body. From May 4th until May 12th, the students of grades 1-8 will be able to pur-chase tickets for a lottery to win privileges donated by the YBH rebbeim, moros, and teach-ers. Tables will be set up during designated times with the available prizes on view. Students will then have the opportunity to place their tickets into the containers for the prizes of their choice. Some examples of past prizes or privileges include, but are definitely not limited to: extra points on a test, passes for a homework-free night, one-on-one learning with a rebbe, or a Shabbos meal at a teacher’s house. Privileges may also be designed for more than one stu-dent (ie: “you and two friends…”). The drawings for the prizes will take place a special assem-bly in honor of Yom Yerushalayim. This year, the money collected from the ticket sales (50 cents each, 12 for $5,) will benefit a daycare center in Chevron (Hebron,) Israel. This daycare center is unique in that it provides care for the children of working mothers who may be unable to return home in a timely fashion due to frequent road closures or violence in the area. Trained employees who provide hot meals, homework help and a safe place during uncertain times, staff the center. Knowing that their children will be taken care of, these mothers can breathe a bit easier dur-ing potentially difficult times. This is a project of Emunah of America. Checks can be made payable to Emunah of America, specifying “Hebron Daycare center” in the memo, if anyone would like to send their children with this method of payment or to make a separate donation. We need your help in making this event a success for our chil-dren and the children of Chevron. Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation, Mrs. Estie Fried
