There are halachic implicaons as well, such as the חיובof eang in the סוכהthe night of the 15th of Tishrei as opposed to the day of the 15th where one has a mitzvah to eat in the סוכהrather than a חיוב. Simply put, if one chooses not to eat challah on the day of the 15th (which is אסורto eat out of the סוכה), he did nothing wrong. He did not get the mitzvah of eang in the סוכהbut he was not עוברon an עבירה. However, on the first night of Succos, one must eat the type of food in the סוכהthat requires ישיבת סוכה, such as challah or a רביעיתof wine. The same concept holds true for the first night of Pesach, when there is a חיובto eat matzah as opposed to the next day. She (sweetly) responds: In order to clean properly, one must first take everything out to clean inside (which cre- ates a mess) and then things can be put in order.By the me everyone comes to the seder on the first night of Pesach, every- thing is not only clean but shining with the beauty that is present in every Jewish home. So too, before Succos, starng from חודש אלולand increasing in intensity during the עשרת ימי תשובה, everyone is busy cleaning out the debris that accumulated throughout the year, creang one big mess. The cleansing process of the neshama also requires pung everything out on the table with ודוי, על חטאetc. before our neshama can become nice and shiny. The first night of Yom Tov celebrates the climax of the avoda of a Yid in his soul- searching or house cleaning (as chametz is compared to the yetzer hara) in order to reach the highest level of purity and close- ness to Hashem that can be achieved through סליחה וכפרה. We say in הלל: מקימי מעפר דל מאשפות ירים אביוןwhich alludes to our soiled and stained neshama that can be placed amongst the holy and righteous ones, להושיבי עם נדיבים. GENERAL STUDIES UPDATE & WELCOME NEW FACULTY

Dear Parents, Welcome to the 2017-18 school year. I hope you and your children enjoyed a summer of relaxation, family time and opportunities for your child to forge new friendships and participate in activities that warmer weather permits. For the YBH administration, the summer weeks were spent reviewing student pro-gress over the past year, evaluating curricu-lar initiative, setting academic goals for the coming year and staffing the various depart-ments with outstanding faculty. PTA CORNER It’s wonderful to see all the fresh faces back at school.

We wish everyone a wonderful year and hope you are enjoying the high-

lighters we distributed at the start of the school year.

A special thank you to the Arochas family for making the welcome bags for our

new families. Thank you to Penina Goldman for coordi-nating another successful

ECD Meet and Greet and to all the morahs who made

the event so special.

We look forward to many exciting programs and events planned for the

coming year.

Dear Parents, B’siyata dishmaya the new school year began with much enthusiasm and excite-ment. It was wonderful to welcome our girls to another year of learning at YBH. A special welcome to the new families who have joined. We are privileged to have a staff of veteran morahs who are role models for our girls. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Morah Moller and Morah Stein, (see below) two experienced mechanchos, to our middle school team. I am always in awe of our staff of morohs who are committed to pro-fessional development and are constantly initiating and implementing new strategies to enhance instruction. At YBH we are committed to the academic and emotional growth of each student. The morahs have administered their base-line assessments and we have begun re-viewing objectives for the upcoming se-mesters and differentiating classroom lev-els. It is a true nachas for me to observe many meaningful and interactive lessons, from the fourth grade girls acting out the pesukim they are learning to the seventh grade girls independently researching Yomim Tovim facts and presenting their findings to their peers. The girls each received a “ruler” bracelet at the first assembly of the year. The con-cept of growth will be developed within many co-curricular activities throughout the year. I look forward to sharing details with you in future newsletters. The middle school girls enjoyed a most uplifting Yom Iyun in preparation for Yom Kippur. A spe-cial hakaras hatov to Rabbi Glasser for the inspirational message and Mrs. Greenspan for enhancing the program through music and song. Partnership with parents is so important, so please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone at 973-777-0735, ext. 316. Please remember that nothing is too small or insignificant when it comes to the success of our girls. I look forward to continuing sharing initiatives and much nachas from our girls together. Wishing you a Good Yom Tov, Mrs. Chana Frumit Stern Assistant Principal, Girls’ Division

Our new eighth grade morah, Morah Elisheva Stein, taught second through eighth grades at HANC in Long island for several years before taking a leave of ab-sence to raise her children. She studied at Michlalah and Stern Colleges and earned a Masters Degree in Education from Hof-stra University. Morah Stein is looking forward to an exciting and successful school year!

Morah Tzipora Moller, a veteran Torah Umesorah certified morah, with many years of experience is excited to join the YBH family as our new seventh grade morah. She has also worked with teenage girls in summer camps and antici-pates a wonderful year with her seventh grade class.

(Cont. from previous page) We are also proud and pleased to share that a number of veteran and new faculty members used the summer to advance their pedagogic knowledge. Mrs. Kwestel, our 5B teacher attended two workshops at the Buehler Challenger and Space Center that included a “Rendezvous With Comet Hadley” and “Lunar Marvels and America’s Great Eclipse”. We hope many YBHers took advantage of the viewers they created at the end of last year so that they could view this once in a lifetime phenomenon. In addition, Mrs. Kwestel attended the CIJE (Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education) Tech-Middle School intensive 3 day course which intro-duced educators to the Engineering Process, emphasizing project based learning in sci-ence and math. Rabbi Wieder attended a 3 day course on Microcontroller/electronics, and a week long course in San Jose, CA on Microcontroller and STEM, specifically for educators. These courses focused on how best to plan curriculum with today’s elec-tronics. This was also a wonderful oppor-tunity to network with educators from other schools. Mrs. Margulies and I participated in an intensive online course on Struggling Readers given by Teacher’s College, Columbia Univ. Several elementary school teachers attended a 30 course on the Orton Gillingham reading program. Mrs. Rosenzweig and Mrs. Ebstein, our 2B teach-ers, as well as Mrs. Pnina Kaplan, one of our learning center teachers and afternoon assistant, Mrs. Messing, our 3G assistant and Ms. Dworetsky, a learning center teacher, will use their knowledge and expertise in this reading intervention program to support the early reading development of the students in their classes. Finally, several faculty members are enrolled in a 6 day course offered by Torah Umesorah that enhances each teacher’s professional repertoire and classroom organization, management and pedagogy. With the stellar professional team of educators on board, together with the Hanhala and parents, we look forward to a year of academ-ic achievement and nachas from all our students. Wishing you all a Chag Sameach, Mrs. Natalie Lichtman, General Studies Principal

A Peek Into Our Week:

ECD HIGHLIGHTS Morah Sara's Nursery has had a wonderful start to the

year. The children are having so much fun learning, singing, and making beautiful friendships. This week they learned all about Yom Kippur. Not only did they make beautiful projects to take home and share, they enjoyed a wonderful assembly by Morah Perele where

they heard a story, enjoyed a “Do What the Torah Says” presentation and were treated to a delicious

chocolate pudding treat. They were delighted to see real chickens and pet them (if they chose to) as a learn-ing opportunity before Yom Kippur. We look forward to an exciting and enjoyable year of learning and playing.

Mrs. Buckweitz’s Second Grade: Second grade got off to a roaring start. To enhance coop-erative learning skills, the children’s first assignment was to pair up and trace each others’ bodies. To further de-velop small coordination skills, students drew and col-ored facial and clothing features on the life size tracings which they subsequently cut out. Several developmental skills, such as the ability to follow directions and writing complete sentences, were addressed during their “All About Me” projects. These class projects were shared on Back to School Night with parents.

Morah Pachtmans’ Kitah Alef: It is so nice to be back in school. We began the year with much excitement, as we learned all about the chaggim. We reviewed and prepared for Rosh Hashana, Yom Kip-pur and Succos. We work daily on reviewing and improv-ing our Hebrew kriah as well as our Hebrew language skills, so that we will be ready for our Chumash later this year. Each day is filled with many different activities and lessons to help us learn the different skills that we will acquire in first grade. We look forward to a great year filled with much learning and growth while having fun.

Mrs. Samuels’ Fifth Grade: In science we have started learning about the four states of matter (liquid, solid, gas, and plasma). As an educa-tional and fun introduction to this unit, the girls visited the science lab to create a non-Newtonian fluid, other-wise known as "oobleck" (cornstarch dissolved in wa-ter). A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid whose viscosity is variable based on applied stress or force. Other exam-ples include ketchup and toothpaste. The girls asked lots of questions, and were fascinated by the reaction of these combined ingredients. Let the science experiments begin!

Morah Rosenberg’s Kitah Daled started off with a bang! We learned much about the Yomim Noraim in the few days of school before Yom Tov. We spent much time learning the exciting Perek in Parshas Vayeshev. We focused on words that share shorashim but whose definitions change with different Roshei or Sofei Milla. They’ve come a long way in finding the Shoresh, Rosh Milah, Sof Milah and figuring out the meanings of new words. The girls keep asking wonderful questions and are eager to learn as much as possible. We are also learning Hilchos Hashkamas Haboker. It’s amazing how eagerly the girls implement these Halachos into their morning routine. The girls in Kitah Daled continue to do their best in each and every sub-ject we are learning. May they continue on their road to suc-cess. Rabbi Wieder’s Middle School Science Lab: Eighth grade started off small, microscopically small that is. We began the year by learning how to safely operate a microscope, then went on to looking at prepared slides of cells and organ-isms. Finally the girls were able to create their own wet mount slide by using pond water and water from our turtle tank. Some found in-credibly intricate micro-scopic organisms in the turtle tank. As part of the newly updated

CIJE-Tech 7th grade Science and Technology curriculum, the girls were busy designing a steadiness tester, of the type you might see at amusement parks and fairs. Their unit deals with circuits and how to measure different aspects of electricity.

Mr. George Kramer, world

renowned stamp historian, gave

the girls a glimpse into U.S. history by intro-ducing them to

his vast collection of stamps and other historical memorabilia.
