It was very inspiring and uplifting for the faculty members to hear personal stories from the Rav’s own experiences and chizuk to help our rebbeim impart one of the most important aspects of chinuch. Rav Willig shared sources from the Rambam, as well as from contemporary meforshim, who discuss the importance of middos (as the Rambam calls it: דעות). I observed during the course of the week that the medrash in parshas Vayikra discusses this matter as well. The wording of the medrash is very powerful. The parsha begins with Moshe Rabbeinu waiting to hear Hashem’s instructions on the dinim of קרבנות. Hashem spoke )כביכול) from the אהל מועדand Moshe had to wait to be called first )ויקרא אל משה) before entering the אהלמועד. The medrash then goes on to say the following: צא ולמד ממשה אבי החכמה, אבי הנביאים, שהוציא את ישראל ממצרים, ועלה לשמי מרום והוריד תורה מן השמים ועל ידו נעשו כמה ניסים!...ולא נכנס לפני ולפנים עד שקרא לו, שנאמר ויקרא אל משה!ויק( ) ר,א, טוCan you imagine the father of all נביאים, who led the B’nei Yisrael out of מצריםand went up to שמיםto bring down the Torah, did not enter the אהל מועדuntil he was called! Rav Aharon Kotler, זצ ל, says that we learn from here how powerful the lesson of דרך ארץ קדמה לתורהis. There are more words in the medrash describing how deficient someone who learns Torah but lacks דרך ארץis. (The medrash uses sharp language to describe this.) Rav Aaron says that we see from this medrash that דרך ארץ קדמה לתורהis not just a directive, it’s a profound statement that even if one is a תלמיד חכם, if he is lacking in middos, his Torah is not relevant! Torah was given to the Jewish people once there is שלימותin middos, otherwise, it’s not a מעלה(quality) for one to know Torah. Once a person has reached a level of middos, then the Torah he learns is considered an advantage and enhance- ment to his persona. Learning middos, )תורת דרך ארץ) is Torah in itself but comes before other areas of Torah. This is why ספר בראשיתis called ספר הישר, in order for us to learn from the אבותand אמהותhow to be a ‘mentsch’! We were taken out of מצריםto receive the Torah but we did not receive it until we were ready in every sense of the word. May we all be זוכהto focus on this very important aspect of chinuch as we approach the Yom Tov of Pesach, so that והגדת לבנךincludes the fundamentals of דרך ארץ קדמה לתורה. Dear Parents, This past Sunday, the rebbeim of YBH had the privilege (as part of our professional development session) of hearing Rav Mordechi Willig, shlita, discuss the topic of teaching middos to our children. Dear Parents, Although Purim is behind us, the memories of the exciting programs experienced by the girls are still fresh in their minds. The Purim carnival was a great success! Thank you to the carnival heads, Yocheved Zuckerman and Ruthie Manticof and the entire eighth grade for a phenomenal job of running an array of exciting booths. The joy and achdus experi-enced is reflected in the ador-able pictures. A special הכרת to Morah Gold and her הטובclass for a fabulous perfor-mance, bringing the story of Purim to life through drama and song.

“A person is obligated to see himself as if he went out of As Pesach ”.מצריםapproaches, each morah has put forth much effort into preparing and teaching the halachos and story of יציאת in interactive and מצריםmeaningful ways, bringing the story to life. The girls are in-ternalizing the lessons through creative projects and divrei Torah. Morah Rabinow-itz’s second grade girls parad-ed through the hallways last week dressed up as yidden leaving מצרים, with “sacks” on their backs in a wonderful interactive lesson.

Pesach can be described as the Yom Tov of emunah, and therefore every lesson that our morahs teach is to imbue a strong foundation of emu-nah in our talmidos. Our goal is for every girl to feel that she is a link in the mesorah, feeling a connection to יציאת thereby being an ,מצריםactive seder participant. The morahs have been using the שפה נעימה Ivrit/dikduk program throughout the grade levels and it has been rewarding to see the develop-ment of our girls’ Ivrit and dikduk skills. Morah D’vorah’s kitah alef wrote beau-tiful mishpatim about Chag HaPesach that are displayed on the bulletin board outside their classroom. Morah Weiss’s kitah daled proudly showed me the סכומים (summaries) they wrote for each perek of Megillas Esther, culminating in a beautiful megillah project. Hanging in the hallway are creative and informative חבורים about that Morah (dolls) בובותRosenberg’s kitah daled wrote.

The development of the Hebrew language as well as dikduk skills, aid in meeting one of our main curricular objectives in Judaic Studies, which is to create independ-ent learners. I look forward to continuing to share our girls’ many accomplishments as they progress in their skill levels in all subjects. A Peek Into Our Week

Morah Weiss' Kitah Daled: We completed a five-week program called Likras Shabbos. Each week we read a Shabbos story, sang Lecha Dodi and another Shabbos song, enjoyed a special treat and took home a checklist of ways for the girls to help out at home and things they could do to do to make Shabbos special. As a treat for completing all five weekly checklists, the girls got beautiful awards and made delicious chocolate mousse trifles for Shabbos dessert. They also made their own megillos for Purim by writing a summary of each perek in Ivrit and drawing their own illustrations. Then they con-nected them to create a super long megilla that showcased their Ivrit skills as well as their artistic abilities. They are now learning from and decorating their own beautiful haggados for Pesach. Morah Pachtman’s Kitah Alef: We completed our Chumash lessons on Hashem’s yom rishon and yom sheini creations and we went on a nature walk to marvel at some of those beautiful creations (and to enjoy the first taste of spring). For each yom that we are learning about, we created an illustrative project depicting what we learned. It is amazing how quickly the girls are learning new words in Chumash and can identify their shorashim. In preparation for Pesach, we are learning the story of yetzias Mitzraim and are designing our own beautiful haddagos to use at the seder.

Morah Rosenberg's Kitah Daled: 4G-R was privileged to a visit from Rabbi Leiner for a Chu-mash lesson upon completing parshas Mikeitz. We had a gala siyum to celebrate this wonderful accomplishment. Some of the girls prepared divrei Torah which they present-ed at the siyum. We made our own pizza, enjoyed fresh popcorn from a popcorn machine and delicious snow cones from a snow cone machine. The girls proclaimed it was the best siyum we ever had! We have begun working on our haggados and are very excited to be learning all about Pesach.

ECD HIGHLIGHTS Nurse Jesse (YBH afternoon nurse) came to the

kindergarten classes to teach us about health & hygiene and Dr. Simchi (aka Chana’s abba) visited the nursery

classes and K-K to teach us how to keep our teeth clean and shining as brightly as our smiles.

Mrs. Sober’s MS Language Arts Classes: The middle school girls are enjoying reading class novels and ap-plying their active reading skills to become critical and involved readers. They have explored the historical, cultural, and social milieu of their novels. While analyzing the relationship between themes to the development of characters, setting and plot, they also pay careful attention to literary styles, craft and structure. They can be heard conversing about the use of dramatic irony, the effectiveness of propaganda techniques, how the dialogue reveals the characters’ traits and the use of symbolism, among other writing techniques. They regularly journal their responses to the literature in a variety of writing. For example, by compar-ing their world with the dystopian world of their novels and stepping into the shoes of the main characters to learn survival skills as a blind person. We are looking forward to delving into units on drama and poetry for the remainder of the year. Morah Goldberg’s Kitah Ches: The eighth grade girls are deep in Pesach preparations. We are busy making beautiful haggados , both aesthetically and in con-tent. In our hakdama to the haggadah, we are exploring how a person can fulfill the mitzvah of seeing himself as leaving Mitz-rayim. We will then do a "walk through" of the haggadah, under-standing the flow of the seder night and preparing questions to ask, all to enhance the seder experience and relate to yetzias Mitzraim.
