Credit goes especially to two people (Gwen Persin and Helen Stareshefsky) who work tirelessly to make sure the publication reflects the professionalism and talents of our devoted staff as well as the shining stars at our yeshivathe children. We just experienced a Shabbos Shuva and now continue working on the Teshuva process. It is a bit overwhelming for many of us, and sometimes we may for this reason avoid focusing on it much. How is the mitzvah of teshuva on Kippur Yom different from the obligation every Jew has throughout the year when a sin is committed? Rabeinu Yonah says in his sefer Sharei Teshuva that on Yom Kippur there is an additional component and that is-Lifnei Hashem Titharu. Yom Kippur helps us purify ourselves to the point where we are likened to a newborn child-free from any sins? During the rest of the year if one sins and does teshuva on a particular aveira, he is fulfilling his obligation of re- penting this transgression. On Yom Kippur one must cleanse oneself from all sins thus reaching the level of purity. My Rosh Hayeshiva, Rav Gedalya Schorr, zt”l, in his sefer Ohr Gedalyahu quotes Rabbeinu Yona and applies a concept stated in the Maharal to explain the difference between how teshuva works a whole year and how it works Yom Kippur. The Maharal points out a confusion in the 13 middos (that we say so often during this time of the year), that needs to be clarified. The posuk says Hashem, Hashem Keil Rachum… ‟ Chazal say about the double expression “Hashem, Hashem” Ani Hashem before one sins (obviously since you hadn‟t sinned) and “Ani Hashem”, after one sins (even though you sinned, you repented) Chazal also say Nakei Lo Yenakeh, one for those who do teshuva (Nakei, he is forgiven) the other (Lo Yenakeh ) for those who don‟t repent. Why two pasukim for the same principle- Hashem forgives with Teshuva and doesn‟t without! Says the Maharal, Hashem H’ashem is referring to the type of Teshuva that totally envelops the person, like a mikva, as R’ Akiva says “Ma Mikva Metaher Es H’atmeim Af Hakadosh Baruch Hu Metaher Es Yisroel”. The Teshuva referred by “Nakei Lo Yenakeh” refers to the teshuva for those aveiros for which one actually repents. This Maharal, says Ohr Gedalyahu is exactly what the Rabeinu Yona is speaking about! The Lifnei Hashem Titharu is the total cleansing which happens when one connects to the holiness of Yom Kippur by focusing on our neshama rather than our physical needs. This explains why we fast and avoid other physical pleasures. We want to be fully immersed in the holiness of the day without distractions. The rest of the year, our Teshuva is merely repenting on par- ticular sins, which helps us purify ourselves partially so that when an opportunity arises, such as Yom Kippur, we will seize the moment and take full advantage of the essence of the day. May we be awakened and inspired to the level of receiving the special gift of purity by putting forth our best efforts in Tefillah this wonderful and happy day of Yom Kippur. G’mar Chasima Tova! However, some have suggested that we really could manage to have a seuda if we act carefully. For example, just as we make early Shabbos in the summer, we could make early Shabbos and after Kiddush and eating seuda, we can begin Yom Kippur. Alternatively, we can eat a small amount such as a kzayis on Yom Kippur itself, and this small amount is not a full viola- tion of fasting, but it may count as a minimal seuda. BS”D 6 Tishrei 5771 September 14, 2010 Dear Parents, We hope everyone had a wonderful summer and we would like to welcome you to the start of another exciting school year. For those families returning to YBH, it is great to see you again; and for the new families first starting out at YBH, we wish to extend a Bruchim Habaim, welcome to our Yeshiva. We wish the students and their families a year full of Hatzlocha and Brocha and a Gmar Chasima Tova. The start of school brings with it much excitement. We are happy to report an increase of approxi-mately 35 new families, representing about 40 new students this year, Kein Yirbu. We hope that the adjustment for the new families has been a smooth one. Should anyone wish to contact us, the best way to do so is by email; our addresses are listed below. You may have noticed the improvements to the physical plant that were performed over the summer. Most of the first floor was painted, including the lunchroom, multi-purpose room, the entrance hall and the corri-dors. The stairwell doors on all three floors were painted as well. The fresh coat of paint around the building looks great. The two playgrounds on campus, one for the Early Childhood Division (ECD), and the second for the older students, were both upgraded with over 30 tons of new rubberized mulch, making for safer “landings” (should that be required). Curbs were installed along the perimeters to keep the mulch confined to the playground areas and not be deposited elsewhere, as some parents have discovered in the past. These refur-bishments were ready on schedule for the PTA‟s Pre-school “Meet and Greet” event, held last week. The smil-ing faces of the children playing in the refurbished playgrounds were priceless. All of the upgrades mentioned above could not have been accomplished without the efforts of Mr. Mi-chael Friedman, the plant operations manager, and his family. Although the school has one M. Friedman on the payroll, there were multiple Friedmans “on site” throughout the summer helping out in every which way. The family also donated some of the costs of painting, in lieu of purchasing centerpieces for their son Zach‟s Bar Mitzvah. Yasher Koach to the Friedman family, and may they be an inspiration to others. Honorable mention goes to Frayda Glucksman for also pitching in. We hope that you are enjoying the new school calendar. Thank you Eliezer Greenberger and his com-mittee, Amitai Levin, Mordechai Gasner, and Reuven Elson for once again making the calendar beautiful, infor-mative, and on time. The revised YBH parent handbook can be viewed on our website; www.ybhillel.org; open the window for “parents” and scroll down. Please take a few moments to read it, as it contains vital information about school policies, some of which have very recently been updated. Every year there is a school-wide Bike-a-Thon in Third Ward Park, where both the younger as well as the older students participate in this fun event by bicycling adjacent to the Duck Pond. This year‟s event is scheduled for the end of October (see flyer attached). With the upcoming Sukkos vacation, there will be many opportunities for students to ask their bubbies, zaides, aunts, uncles and cousins to sponsor them in this event. As in the past, prizes will be awarded based on various parameters - laps bicycled, funds raised, age of biker. Start lining up those sponsors and get your bikes ready to roll. We hope to see everyone that day cheering on the amazing YBH bikers. In the past, Rabbi Leiner has been seen on a bicycle as well. With sufficient interest (sponsors), it might just be possible to encourage Rabbi Leiner to do this again. Wishing everyone a Gut Gebencht Yor and much Nachas from your children,

Learning From Our Leaders Rabbi Berel Hirschman (2B)

T here is a beautiful parable from the Dubno Maggid found in The Maggid Speaks, by Rabbi Pesach Krohn. Around the world on Erev Yom Kippur, wherever one goes, the scene is the

same: men dressed in white, a serious tone and people immersed in prayer. It would seem to the casual observer that everyone is righteous and repentant, and all these people will live as tzadikim in the coming year. Looks can be deceiving.

When the wealthiest man in town is planning a wedding, everyone is anticipating a lavish affair with the finest of foods, a large orchestra and plenty of merriment, and dancing. No one wants to be left out and the townspeople prepare to dress in their finest clothing to attend the simcha.

What will the poor town‟s people do? They want to attend the wedding, but they have no fine clothing to wear. These unfortunate people will go out looking to borrow clothing and jew-elry so they, too, can attend this gala affair.

Any outside observer would think that all the guests at this wedding were wealthy, but if he were to stay after the wedding, he would understand the reality. Afterward, all the poor peo-ple are rushing about returning the clothing and jewelry they borrowed. It is only after the wed-ding that one can see who is fortunate and who is not.

Says the Dubno Maggid, so it is after Yom Kippur. People return to their daily routines and then one can see who the true penitent is. If one returns to “life as usual,” it is obvious that yesterday‟s remorse was only temporary. For such people, it was only a “borrowed” Yom Kip-pur.

(Continued from page 1) Perhaps the answer is that the Shabbos is affected by the presence of Yom Kippur. The Rambam writes that on Yom Kippur all the service in the Beis Hamikdash must be performed by the Kohen Gadol. Any other day this is not required, and the service can be performed by a regular Kohen. What happens with the special Shab-bos korbanos when Yom Kipur falls on Shabbos? Does the Kohen Gadol have to bring them, or can a regular Kohen bring them, since they don‟t have anything to do with Yom Kippur? The Rambam writes that the Kohen Gadol must do those korbanos as well, implying that even the regular Shabbos aspects of the day are af-fected, by the presence of Yom Kippur. Since the Shabbos is not a regular Shabbos, it is a Yom Kippur Shabbos, it doesn‟t have a mitzvah to eat seudos at all. It doesn‟t have a mitzvah to say Kid-dush (over wine) at all. This leads to another interesting consequence. If someone is obliged to eat due to ill-ness, wouldn‟t we expect him or her to recite Kiddush first, since it is Shabbos, after all, not just Yom Kippur, and presumably we don‟t say Kiddush only because we aren‟t allowed to eat. However, according to what we just said above, on Yom Kippur Shabbos, there is no mitzvah of Kiddush, even if one is going to be eating.

Class Acts—1B

Mrs. Buckweitz

T he second graders got off to a roaring start. To enhance cooperative learning skills, the

children‟s first assignment was to pair up and trace each other‟s bodies. To further develop small coordination skills, students drew and col-ored facial and clothing features on life-size trac-ings, which they subsequently cut out. Several developmental skills, such as the ability to follow directions and write complete sentences, were addressed during their “All About Me” projects. These class art projects in addition to letters wel-coming parents to the classroom were shared on „Back to School Night” with families.

Mrs. Praver

W e welcome all the boys to first grade. We are starting to get to know each other. We are hoping to start the year on the right foot. We have made personal goals for the year. We are having fun getting our new textbooks. Math is our favorite so far, and we are also learning new classroom rou-tines. We are finding out what is ex-pected of us in the first grade.

W e have started out with a great year in 1B. We have learned so many nice ראש השנה songs and

have sent beautiful שנה טובה cards to our parents. We want to thank Shmuel Levin‟s father for coming in to blow his very own שופר. We had a lot of fun practicing with our rubber chickens. Our boys in 1st Grade כפרותhave been working very hard on perfecting our קריאה and our davening. We know 2 out of the 8 sets of שרשים very well. We want to wish a מזל טוב to the Besser family on Yehuda‟s Upsherin. Thank you for letting 1B take part in your wonderful simcha.

Class Acts—2B

Rabbi Hirschman

T he boys of 2B are off to a great start! We have been working feverishly on

our Yom Tov booklets and we are ready for Yom Kippur. We are learning about “eiver min hachai” and “shifichas damim” in Parashas Noach. Did you know they are two of the Seven Mitzvos of Bnai Noach? We have our marble jar in which we place marbles for good behavior and good learn-ing. We are already about half finished filling it. We have a terrific surprise Suc-cos project coming up, too. Be on the lookout for a great decoration that will last for years!

W elcome to all our new and returning YBH families. The PTA is looking forward to another enjoyable and pro-ductive school year. We kicked off the beginning week of school with the ECD Meet and Greet which took place on the YBH playground. This was a great opportunity for the children entering Nursery through P1A and their parents to meet each other and was enjoyed by the many families that attended. Many thanks to Yael Pahmer and Aviva Levin for organizing this social get-together. We would also like to thank Rabbi Leiner, Rabbi Perlstein and Dr. Gold for coming out to personally greet our new families. The PTA is very thankful to be able to offer a delicious and affordable hot lunch program again this year, thanks to Rachel Novick and Yaakov Ochs. We appreciate all the time and effort you put into planning and organiz-ing this program to make it work so smoothly (and taste good too!) With Succos around the corner, our organizing of the class Succah parties is well underway thanks to Adina Hahn. We appreciate and thank all the Rebbeim, Morahs and parents who have already responded to hosting a class. It is only through your willingness and effort that the PTA can coordinate this opportunity to socialize outside the classroom at this beautiful and special time of year. We are still uncertain about a host family for K-D, P1A-M, 1B and 2G. If any families with children in those classes are interested or would like more information about hosting, please call Adina Hahn at 973-778-2697. Look out for your email or in your child‟s backpack next week for the final-ized schedule of the time and place for each Succah party. The PTA is planning a “Welcome Tea” for all ladies to be held Sunday, October 24

th. Our goal is to have a

short program/activity that we hope will interest everyone enhanced by some elegant and tasteful dishes and a chance for the women to relax and have a nice time together, meet new faces, etc. We sincerely hope that you will mark the date on your calendar and make every effort to come. It will be our pleasure to greet you. Please contact Penina Goldman at 973-777-1146 if you are interested in helping with this event. In closing, the PTA would like to remind and encourage everyone to be a part of our organization. It is only with your ideas, energy and time that we are able to continue to enhance and enrich our children‟s yeshiva experi-ence. When you become involved, you are also showing your children you are a committed partner in their school‟s success. In addition, if you have not yet sent in your membership dues of $36.00, please send your check made out to “YBH-PTA” to the school office as soon as you are able, and mark the envelope to Adina Hahn - PTA. This goes a long way in helping fund the many activities which benefit our children. May we all work together for a productive and growth filled year for our children and ourselves. Wishing you all a K’siva Vachasima Tova!

Greetings from the YBH—PTA!

w e are reminding parents not to send in snacks which could contain peanut or nut products. Peanut allergies can be very serious or even fatal. If a child is severely allergic, he/she does not necessarily need to eat peanuts to have a severe

or life threatening reaction. The allergy can be triggered by such seemingly “minor” events as touching a peanut product, in-haling airborne peanut particles, or by skin contact with peanut residue left on a classmate‟s hands, on a table, or on a toy. Please keep this in mind when preparing snacks and lunches for your children, as well as when bringing in foods to be shared by an entire class. In addition, when snacks are being shared by an entire class, sesame ingredients must be avoided, as well. We realize this may cause some inconvenience. Please understand that the health and well-being of each child in our yeshiva is of paramount importance to us all. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation. Please be especially vigilant when purchasing items for school parties! If in doubt, check the ingredients with Nurse Gloria or purchase a different food item. Please remind babysitters and relatives or any adults who may prepare food to be brought to school by your children, of the importance of adhering to this extremely important policy.

An Urgent Reminder From the School Nurse

Rebbe would send the child to the office to place a call home. This is no longer our policy. No stu-

dent will be allowed to come to the office to call home to notify parents of forgotten lunch. In

addition, no office personnel will be placing “forgotten lunch” calls.

If parents notice a child has left lunch behind, they are welcome to bring the labeled, bagged food to

school, to be placed in a special LUNCH BOX in the front lobby near the lunchroom.

You will see a clipboard and pen attached to the LUNCH BOX. Under the appropriate date, enter:

Your child’s grade

Name of Rebbe/Morah/Teacher

Clearly print the name of your child.

In the event that the parent does not notice that the child has forgotten lunch at home, please be as-

sured that we will provide something basic for your child to eat.

Please do not bring forgotten snacks.

Please do not bring bottled water or drinks that have been forgotten, unless they are part

of a lunch that you are delivering.

PLEASE DO NOT STOP IN THE OFFICE. GO DIRECTLY TO THE

LUNCH BOX.

B. “I FORGOT MY SEFER/TEXTBOOK/HOMEWORK”

Students and parents need to work together to pack book bags in the evening after homework has

been completed to ensure that all necessary items needed for the next day are in. If you notice your

child is forgetful, please prepare/type a checklist that your child can use on a daily basis. In this

way, your child will develop a great organizational tool and be prepared for class! Please under-

stand: We cannot interrupt classes to deliver school items that students forget at home.

To alleviate the congestion and speed up the process at the time of the 4:00 PM

car pool pick up, all parents will follow these guidelines:

1. Slow down as you enter our driveway!

2. Arrivals to our entrance lanes must be from the right-hand turn lane only.

Do not attempt to make a left turn into our driveway from Passaic Avenue.

This holds up traffic and constitutes a danger both to walkers and cars.

3. When leaving our driveway, make a right turn only onto Passaic Avenue.

Do not attempt to make a left turn out of our driveway. This holds up traf-

fic.

4. Do not honk at cars in front of you. Everyone is moving as quickly as possi-

ble.

All parents who drive into our school grounds are expected to follow these

guidelines for every day’s 4:00 PM dismissal and for every half day or Friday

schedule.

Thank you for your cooperation. These guidelines will get everyone where they

need to go-swiftly and safely.
