THIS WEEK: BOYS DIVISION IN FOCUS Parshas Behar-Bechukosai By Rabbi Shlomo Abraham (7B Rebbe) T his past week we celebrated Lag B’Omer, the thirty third day of the Omer, the period of seven weeks between Pesach and Shavuos. During this time, 24,000 students of the great tanna Rabbi Akiva, passed away, because they lacked proper respect for one another. This epidemic stopped on Lag B’Omer, which became a day of celebration. Today, many people celebrate Lag B’Omer by lighting bonfires and singing songs in honor of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, one of Rabbi Akiva’s foremost talmidim How does the celebration of Lag B’Omer prepare us for the greater celebra- tion of Shavuos, which marks the giving of the Torah? And why is Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai central to that celebration? In the Zohar, Reb Shimon expresses the idea that we, as human beings, through Torah, can combine our physicality with our spirituality. This combination is what makes us a nation whose members can incorporate the holiness of the Torah into our everyday lives. There is a famous saying, “Derech eretz kadma l’Torah,” a prerequisite to accepting the Torah is to have derech eretz, proper manners of conduct. If we really want to accept the Torah, we need to refine our characters so that the Torah can have an effect on us. This is why we start learning Pirkei Avos, during the weeks leading up to Shavuos. Pirkei Avos teaches us how to refine our character. Our preparation, then, for Shavuos and receiving the Torah, should be gain- ing this understanding that Reb Shimon personifies, that the physical me is not all just for myself. Rather, it was given to each of us to make holy for ourselves, our communities and Hashem. When we respect one another, what we are saying is that we see more in our fellow human being than just a physical being made of flesh and blood. The seven weeks between Pesach and Shavuos is a time for us to both im- prove ourselves and work on seeing the beauty and G-dliness in every human being. Mazal Tov!

O ur yeshiva wishes to congratulate Yishai Eisenberg (8B) for achieving first place in the National Chidon HaTanach! Competing against con-

testants from a wide variety of schools, Yishai demonstrated superior knowl-edge of Tanach. Yishai will now move on to the International Chidon HaTanach that will take place in Israel on Yom Ha’Atzmaut next year. We are very proud of Yishai and wish him much hatzlacha. Akiva Besser (2B) found the word סביב back in פרשת בראשית.

Shuie Markowitz (2B) asked why the פסוק repeats itself saying that אברהם became the owner of the cave. This question is asked by the Meshech Chochma and the Ohr HaChaim!

Akiva Besser (2B) asked Rashi’s question about “בכל” in א: ד‘‘כ‘ .

Chaim Rothberger (2B) asked: “In declar-ing the new month על פי ראיה, how did the know if the witnesses were telling סנהדריןthe truth?”

Tzvi Seidman (2B) remembers to count every night and even reminds his ספירהfamily. No one has missed a single night, thanks to him!

Akiva Besser (2B) answered the question in the פסוק by reading Rashi!

“This is the BEST TRIP EVER!!!” The boys of 3B were privileged to go the Sterling Hill Mining Museum this past Wednes- day. We walked through a real zinc mine, learned how natural re-sources are mined out of rock, and were awed by the glowing fluorescent rock in the Rainbow Room! The boys have mastered their multiplication and are learning the division facts. We are looking forward to another math period dedicated to math centers and games which will reinforce what we are learning. Everyone is hard at work on their book pro-jects! The boys can choose from a variety of ways to present their books to the class, such as creating dioramas, board games, clay models, and hanging mobiles. We are looking forward to seeing their creativity!

Learning From Our Leaders Rabbi Goldberg (1B Rebbe)

H arav Eizek Ausband, zt’l, Rosh Yeshiva of Telz in

Cleveland Ohio, would invite his students to his home for Shab-bos meals. One of his students remembers a particular time that he had the privilege to be a guest at the table of Rav Eizek Ausband, zt’l, table for a shab-bos meal. It was a cold winter night, the snow was falling with blizzard-like conditions. Walk-ing in such weather can be unpleasant and dangerous. After the meal, Harav Eisek Aus-band, zt’l, and his wife put on their coats and walked the student back to the dormitory. He knew that it was not a safe walk for his student and he wanted to be sure that his student reached his dormitory room safely. Harav Eizek Ausband, zt’l, taught us how to serve Hashem by example in a quiet way.

These words, part וקרבּתנּו מלּכנּו לעבדתךof the תפילֹות of ׁשבּועֹות, have become the motto of 3B over the past month. It is the theme of our recent bulletin board, where all our pictures have been placed on Har Sinai, ready to receive the Torah. The days leading to קּבלת הּתֹורה have been full of preparation, with both תֹורה and מדֹות. We have heard many “ספירה stories” about and regular people who have ,גדֹוליםdemonstrated in so many ways the con-cept of caring for one another. In learning, we have begun our countdown to the end of ספר ּבראׁשית. We are working to make a

סיּום',בעזרת ד, on the whole ספר by June; learning from תֹולדֹות to ויחי in class and The boys .חזרה in חיי שרה to ּבראׁשיתcontinue learning and reading beautifully, growing each day as a class. May they continue to be a source of נחת, going מחיל .אל חיל

T he 6th and 7th graders are working on Webquests, using links to pre-screened websites that allow them to research answers on questions about the history of chocolate or how to

make the best paper airplane (after first researching the history of flight). These Webquests will end with a choice of projects: Students will design a paper airplane flying contest where the students will use what they have learned about the principles of flight to construct a paper airplane that will fly the farthest. Students will produce a chocolate cookbook with recipes writ-ten by the students using what they have learned about layout and fonts to create an appealing page in ad-dition to making sure they have facts about chocolate. The students are very excited about both projects. The students know how to create visually appealing documents using different fonts, colors and styles, and even how to create a watermark or an embedded picture behind text. They also created PowerPoint pres-entations about themselves that were a lot of fun to watch, and they animated and created very impressive slideshows. The 8th graders have been working on a project about what happened the day they were born. They have to find information such as what the price of gas was, what toys were popular and even what the phases of the moon were. They were also excited to find out how old they were on different plan-ets. The students are taking the information they have found and are creating either a newspaper article or PowerPoint presentation about themselves. We will be showing the presentations during class in the up-coming weeks. It has been fun watching all the students learn and watching their skills and creativity grow as a foundation upon which to build next year’s computer classes where more exciting things are planned.

Color War 2012

ת –ו –ד –ח –א We’ve got Achdus!!!!

C olor War 2012 turned out to be memorable in so many ways.

The term “war” was clearly a misnomer. The camaraderie shown between the generals of both teams was astonishing. In a “Color War First” the leaders of both teams wrote a song together, depict-ing the unity of כלל ישראלin the days of Moshiach.

We also learned to overcome challenges

when we got stuck in a downpour while playing in the

park. What could potentially have had a disastrous

outcome, instead ended up as a fun-filled day of

ruach and activities – indoors, of course. What a

difference perseverance makes; fresh t-shirts and

socks help, too. Bundles of thanks to our Rebbeim

and teachers who kept the students’ spirits up

throughout everything. Thanks a million to Rabbi

Leiner for coming through with new (dry) red and blue

t-shirts and socks for everyone!
