Make Angel selections this weekend and next Volunteers will be in the back of church after all Masses this
weekend, Nov. 23-24, and next, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, to help you and your
family select an angel from the STM Angel Tree. The Angel Tree project
has a collection of angel ornaments which describes the Christmas wish
of needy children, adults and seniors. Angel gifts/gift cards should be
returned to the tree, wrapped and affixed with the angel ornament code
facing out, by Dec. 8.
May God bless you for sharing with the less fortunate this Christmas
season!
2019 Angel Tree supports: STM St. Vincent de Paul, The Care Center, The Capitol House, Colonial Care Retirement Center, St. Francis Xavier, Volunteers of America, Baton Rouge General NICU, Woman’s NICU, Maison des Ami of Louisiana, and our own STM families.

Make plans to celebrate Thanksgiving at STM The parish will celebrate Thanksgiving at 8:30 a.m. Mass on
Thursday, Nov. 28. Parishioners are invited to bring the bread or
wine from their Thanksgiving meal for a special blessing.
The collection taken up at the Thanksgiving Mass will fund the work
done by the St. Vincent de Paul Conference, an STM ministry that
aids the parish needy. Proceeds from the collection aid the
conference in providing help with rent, food and clothing to those residing within our parish boundaries who
are in severe distress. Please be generous in your contributions to this special Thanksgiving collection.
Please note that there will be no confessions the morning of the 28th and no 7 a.m. Mass on Friday, Nov. 29.

SINGLE SENIORS Nov. 26 – 10 a.m. Calendar/Board Mtg. Nov. 27 - Last date to make reserva-tions for the Dec. 11 Christmas Party at Oak Lodge.
Mark your calendar for the Blessing of the Bambinelli It’s easy to get wrapped up in the festivities of Christmastime, the shopping, the baking, the cleaning, but a great way to slow down and remember the focus of Christmas comes in the form of a little baby. A little Baby Jesus, of course. St. Thomas More Parish will join in the Vatican tradition of blessing the figurines of Baby Jesus, called Bambinelli in Italian, on the Third Sunday of Advent. Everyone (young and old alike) is invited to bring their figure of the Christ Child from their crèche for a special blessing at all Masses the weekend of Dec. 14 and 15. Fellowship Sunday hosted by the Women’s Ministry in the activity center will follow the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Masses on Bambinelli Sunday the 15th. Parishioners will enjoy light refreshments, a creche scene photo op, and there will be an Advent craft for children. Please make plans to join us for this beautiful Advent tradition. A suggestion is, upon returning home from the blessing, put your Baby Jesus in a box, wrap it, and place it under the tree. Let this be the first gift your family receives Christmas morning, when together you place your baby Jesus figure in the crib. It is sure to be a blessing for your entire family and a wonderful tradition for years to come.

The Guiding Power of Hope Advent Reflection Books Every year for Advent and Lent, we provide our parishioners with a reflection booklet to help them focus on the meaning of the season. This year, our booklet is from Janet Schaeffler, OP, and is titled The Guiding Power of Hope.
Hope is defined as a feeling of expectation and desire for something to happen. This time of
year can be hard for many people to experience hope. Weather, the pressure of the holidays, missing loved ones who have passed, struggles of dealing with physical or mental illness – all these things can drown out or smother any sense of hope we might have. Sr. Schaeffler invites us to pause during this Advent and reflect on the daily
readings to listen for the whispers of hope that surround us. Pick up a reflection booklet next weekend – Nov. 30/Dec. 1 – and spend time this Advent exploring the guiding power
of hope that whispers throughout our lives.

spiritual growth of the parish family
Attention High School Seniors Each year the STM Knights of Columbus Council 5530 selects one Catholic high school senior boy and one Catholic high school senior girl to represent the Council in the Catholic Youth Leadership Award program (CYLA). To be eligible you do not need to attend a Catholic high school. Each candidate is judged in five categories, Spiritual, Academic, Civic, Athletic, and Social. The Council winners receive each a $100 cash award and plaque and advance to the next level. State winners receive a $5,000 scholarship. Applications may be obtained online at http://louisiana kc.org/programs/cyla/ or at the parish office. If you are interested in the award program and intend to fill out an application, please contact Rusty Hamilton at 225.270.1229 or by email at [email protected] so that he can ensure that all applications are received by the deadline. Applications must be received by the parish office or email by Jan. 25, 2020, to be eligible. Good luck!
SavetaxwithanIRAdonationevenifyoudon'titemizeIf you're age 70½ or older, you may be eligible for favorable tax treatment. Taxpayers age 70½ or older are allowed to make direct contributions from their IRA to quali ied charitable organizations, up to $100,000 per tax year. The amounts aren’t deemed taxable income and can be used to satisfy an IRA owner’s required minimum distribution. Because the income isn’t taxable, a charitable deduction can't be claimed for the contribution. A direct contribution might be tax-smart if you won’t bene it from the charitable deduction because you use the standard deduction. You can donate part of your required distribution to charity and withdraw the rest of it as retirement income as long as you meet the minimum distribution requirement by the end of the calendar year. To take advantage of the exclusion from income for IRA contributions to charity on your 2019 tax return, you’ll need to arrange a direct transfer by the IRA trustee to an eligible charity by December 31, 2019. Funds must be transferred directly from the IRA to an eligible charity by the IRA trustee in order to qualify for the tax break. STM is a qualifying charitable organization and can provide the necessary information to your IRA trustee. Theinformationprovidedisnotintendedtobelegalortax
