Months after the Western Cape Educa-tion Department (WCED) added aschool in Ruyterwacht to its list of

schools that need repairs, nothing has beendone.The school, Valhalla High, on the border

of Ruyterwacht and Elsies River, was van-dalised to such an extend that some class-rooms were danger-ous for learners. Aft-er the vandalisation,criminal elementsstarted using thedamaged classroomsas hideouts as well asa place where theycould sell and usedrugs.It became so bad

that the local neigh-bourhood watchmarked the school asa crime hot spot.Now,months after the announcement that

the school will be among others in the prov-ince that will be fixed, nothing has beendone. “Weare stillwaiting onnewswhen theclassrooms will be repaired. I know thesethings take time, but at least they could havestarted by now,” says chairman of the Ruyt-erwacht Neighbourhood Watch, Faizel Ad-ams.According to Adams criminals in the area

look for empty derelict buildings.“As soon as it looks as if a building is not

occupied, they swoop in. It becomes prob-lematic for us as a neighbourhood watch be-

cause we now have to enter dark corners tolook for criminals. If a criminal enters adark place more often than not we won’t beable to find him again. There is also a prob-lem in the area with children not being ac-cepted at schools because it is too full. If theclassrooms are fixed two problems will besolved,” says Adams.Derrick Adams, principal of the school,

was not available for comment.Millicent Merton, spokesperson for the

WCED, says whenthe departmentstates the school willbe repaired in thecurrent financialyear, itwill be. “I can-not at this stage givedefinite times be-cause I am still await-ing answers from thepeople working withthe school. As soon asthere is more infor-mation available, it

will be made public,” says Merton.She earlier saidR20millionwill be allocat-

ed to the emergencymaintenance fund to re-pair schools around the province that werevandalised or burgled. According toMertonvandalisation and burglaries take away val-uable resources that could gave gone to-wards the education of learners.“The cooperation of the community is es-

sential in order to combat vandalism andcreate a safe school environment that pro-motes teaching and learning. We urge com-munity members to be extra vigilant and toimmediately report suspicious behaviour,”says Merton.

Students sparkle in science questThe Cape Town Science Centre (CTSC)

buzzed with excitement last week ashigh school pupils from Table View,

MilnertonandGoodwoodparticipated in thefinal round of the 2015 Chevron ScienceQuest.The competition is open to Grade 8 and 9

learners from schools located in previouslydisadvantaged areas and is implemented bythe CTSC with support from the WesternCape Education Department.The quest is an interactive contest, de-

signed to stimulate an interest in scienceand convey curriculum content to learnersin an entertaining manner. After a quickbriefing, pupils were divided into differentgroups where they were tasked with com-pleting various projects, including buildingan electric circuit for a radio.The top prizewent to Harriet Tewesa from

Aman fromWoodstock was sentenced toeight years in prison after he was foundguilty of car theft.In April last year, Constable Jonathan

Kriel attended a crime scene in BothasigwhereaToyotaFortunerhadbeenstolen,and opened a docket for investigation.On his way home after the completion

of his shift, he noticed the stolen vehicleparked next to the road in Halt Road,Elsies River.After confirming that it was indeed the

stolen Toyota Fortuner, he followed thesuspects in his private vehicle while call-ing for back up.He followed the vehicle for about 30

minutes until it was parked at an addressinElsiesRiver.Kriel thenkept observingthe vehicle until other police members

arrived on the scene.The occupants of the vehicle were

three men between the age of 31 and 47and residents of Elsies River, Woodstockand Parow. They were arrested andcharged for theft of the motor vehicle.All three have appeared in court.Last week Jonathan Engelbrecht (37)

was found guilty, while the chargesagainst the two other suspectswerewith-drawn.The state proved that Engelbrecht was

the person who had stolen the vehicle.Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick Jacobs,

Bothasig station commander, praisedKriel for the success achieved in this caseas a result of his outstanding work.“I would like to thank him for his good

work and the local detective branch fortheir good investigation work which en-sured in a positive result in this case,”Jacobs said.

A Goodwood resident has high praisefor the local police after they recov-ered his friend’s stolen vehicle in a

very short time.LastThursdayat approximately 19:00, the

car of Arthur Josias’s housemate, ShaunJardine, was stolen.

“His car was parked in front of our resi-dence in Spencer Street, Goodwood.

“Due to the loud sound his car makes, heheard his car pull away from where it wasparked. We reacted by giving pursuit in myvehicle, but were aimlessly driving aroundin the neighbourhood.

“Mygirlfriend,DarleneForbes, called theGoodwood police and within five minutes,

Sergeant Vuyani Manqina and ConstableLowellyn Brandt were at our residence,”Josias says.“Shaun and I then made our way home

to meet the officers. Sad, but we did notknow the registrationnumber of his vehicleand the officers reacted on two clues: theloud sound of the vehicle and a 3D ‘Arrows’sticker on the rear screen.“In no time we received a call that they

had found the car. Iwas inaweof the actionsof the officers,” says Josias.He further says the response time of

Manqina and Brandt was phenomenal.“Their colleagues who assisted them in

the retrieval of the car, Constables ThaboLesiea and Nkululeko Jele, were all out-standing. The proficient and professionalmanner in which they handled the matter

was out of this world. I pray that some daywe can return the favour,” Josias says.According to police spokesperson War-

rant Officer Wayne Theunis, the officersfollowed their instinct in tracing the car.

“OfficersLesieaandJele instinctivelyde-cided to drive through to Nyanga to look forthe stolen Sentra.

“Close to the N2, Lesiea spotted a NissanSentra and pulled it over. The driver ex-plained to the members that the vehicle be-longed to him,” Theunis says.

“Lesiea called the complainant to ask foridentification marks. The owner told himabout a blue sticker on the rear window.Apart from the broken exhaust, Lesiea sawthe sticker on the window and arrested the34-year-old suspect, who appeared in theGoodwood Magistrate’s Court.”

Wheelbarrows full of plastic bottles,shreds of snipped or shaped plasticbags, and sand. Add some elbow

grease, and you have a school.Well, sort of.These were the “ingredients” used by

workers at theMetro Evangelical Services’s(MES) office in Bellville up to last Friday, tohelp a local church build a school in themis-sionary village of Greyton.Yvette Conradie of MES heard the Bell-

ville Presbyterian Church was planning tobuild a school using entirely recycled mate-rial, so she offered the clients atMES’s office

an opportunity: Help make the eco bricksneeded, and get a daily free meal and coffeeout of the deal.

A lot of elbow grease“I just felt we needed to give the clients

something to do and to keep them out ofmis-chief, while helping others and the environ-ment. With this project, we were trying toeducate them about plastic disposal.”Yvette said the project ran for three

months.“The project was to be finished by Septem-

ber when the church will take all the bottlesto Greyton – it’s a ‘nine-eleven’ project,” shelaughed.The bricks are made of two-litre plastic

bottles filled to the brim with pieces of plas-tic waste and sometimes sand, which wereall pressed deeply into the bottle usingsticks.“You can find all sorts of information

about the bricks on the internet. It’s reallyinteresting how they put it all together.“But I have to say: It requires a lot of elbow

grease to get the plastic in there and makethe bricks really strong, then to fill it withsand.”

24/7 work becomes 7/4/2She said the workers brought the bottles

to the centre filled, using wheelbarrows.Then they continued working in a specialspace that was created for the project on the

MES grounds.“At first I had seven workers – everyone

was excited about putting theplastic into thebottles.“Then we had four, and I ended up with

a team of just two workers.“It is understandable, because it was real-

ly hard to get the plastic to fit and it hurttheir hands,” she said.The workers were rewarded daily with a

meal voucher for a free lunch and a cup ofcoffee when they returned the next morningto finish off the workday ending at 16:00.“I’mnot sure howmanybrickswere creat-

ed altogether, but I do know we took manyblack bags filled with bricks over to thechurch...”

As the sun rises over Saudi Arabian dunes, so thelights in the tiny theatre slowly rise over the na-ked buttocks of the actress facing away from the

audience.The set is barren – bar a table, some newspapers, buc-

kets and a prison cell door. At points the walls are deco-rated in Arabic scribbles.There is blood onLee-AnnVanRooi’s dirty gown.The

quiet in the tiny room is impregnated as the meaningof these stains dawns.The mood is set for Fleur du Cap winner Van Rooi

to tell – in unfaltering monologue – the dark and harro-wing, yet utterly inspiring tale of Danalene Noach.The play is an adaptation of Noach’s autobiographi-

cal novel, in which the Cape Town nurse tells of herwork and stay in Saudi Arabia in the hopes of a betterlife for herself and her family.

Noach’s candidness, her sass and honesty, coupledwith her unerring ability to expose the corruption wit-hin her place of employ, land her on the wrong side ofthe law.She is victimised and eventually lockedup in aprison

for political prisoners, but not even the complete lackof contact with her family, or being raped repeatedly,could dim Noach’s faith.Van Rooi’s performance as the fire-brand Noach is

spellbinding. She is honest and raw in her portrayal,and she switches seamlessly between her character’semotions as they dip and swell while she remembersto keep the faith.At the end of the play, when the spell is finally broken

as the jail doors swing open to Van Rooi unexpectedly,andhope of freedom finally dawns, one is left breathlessand haunted.It is only in this, the aftermath of the harrowing, but

Meera Ranchod entered the SAICA SagePastel Accounting Olympiad, with over4 170 learners from 322 schools all overSouth Africa.Meera obtained a score of 91% and was

placed third in the Western Cape.YaseenMowzer took part in two olympi-

ads this year. The first was the 56th Inter-national Mathematics Olympiad held inChiang Mai, Thailand.Yaseen was placed in the top half and

earnedhimself a bronzemedal. The secondwas the International Olympiad in Infor-matics held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, withits contest being algorithmic in nature.A problem is posed and the participant

is required to program an efficient algo-rithm to solve the question. Yaseenachieved a bronze medal and the South Af-rican team was placed 33rd out of 80 coun-tries.

Net verlede week het hy ’n tanniete hulp gesnel toe rowers haar aangevalhet. “Ek het sommer een met ’n knopkieriegeslaan. Die tannie se man wil my nou per-soonlik kom bedank. Ek weet daar is mensewat dieselfde voel as ek en diesulkes kanmy kontak. By die bestaande buurtwagtemoet ’n mens kursusse loop en dan kry jy’n groen baadjie. Ek wil nie ’n groen baadjiehê en wil nie kursusse loop nie. Wat gaanek nou by ’n kursus leer? As ek ’n ou vang,gaan ek hom foeter – ’n paar warm klappetot die polisie daar aankom,” sê Decker.

Faizel Adams, voorsitter van die grootstebuurtwag op die dorp, sê hy is bly as inwo-ners van die dorp ook oor misdaad bekom-merd is. Hy stem egter nie saam dat menselinks en regs aangerand moet word nie.

“Ons wil ’n beroep op die gemeenskapdoen om nie die reg in eie te neem nie.Buurtwagte het ook reëls wat hulle moettoepas en as ons boendoe-howe gaan toe-pas, kan ons ook met die gereg bots. Nie-mand wen dan in so ’n situasie nie,” sêAdams. Hy het gesê Decker is welkom omby die buurtwag aan te sluit.

Sers. Esmirelda Pheifer, polisiewoord-voerder van Elsiesrivier, wat ook Ruyter-wacht bedien, sê mense kan nie net buurt-wagte stig soos hulle goed dink nie. “Buurt-wagte moet deur die departemnet vangemeenskapsveiligheid onderskryf worden lede moet opleiding ondergaan. Dit isook krimineel om net rond te gaan en men-se aan te rand. Inwoners moet nie die regin eie hande neem nie,” sê Pheifer.

This year’s National CupcakeDay 4 Kids with cancer will beheld on 26 September in excess

of 70 shopping malls across thecountry.

Cupcakes 4 Kids with cancer is anon-profit company that raises awa-reness about the early warningsigns of childhood cancer and fundsfor children fighting the disease.

Through their Cupcakes of Hopeevent, volunteers, sponsors and ba-kers share their love for baking forthis great cause, making theseevents the “sweetest way to save alife”, says Liz van der Walt, one ofthe organisers.

This charity has been able to as-

sist over 300 patients and 15 othercharities since its inception andgrows from year to year.

The funds raised go towards pay-ing for medical treatment, travel-ling costs, school fees, birthday cele-brations and day-to-day expensesfor the children.The organisation also conducts

hospital visits and spoils patientsand staff with cupcakes.

“It is amazing to see how a littlecupcake can bring a huge smile toa child’s face,” says Liz.Sixteen local and regional malls

will be participating this year out ofa total of 70 shopping centres coun-trywide.

Some of these malls include: Ty-ger Valley in Bellville, CapeGate inBrackenfell, N1 City in Goodwood,Canal Walk in Milnerton, Baysidein Table View and a number ofothers.

The organisation requests a dona-tion of R10 per beautifully decoratedcupcake.

Riccardo Leo secured a fifth victory forItaly in the Reply Italian International u.16championship.

Loubser, from Boland, finished fourth onone-under-par 291, while Mayo, from Kwa-Zulu-Natal, and Western Province’s Filippitied for seventh on 294. He carded rounds of74, 75, 69 and 73. Mayo, from Mount Edge-combe, returned rounds of 72, 74, 75 and 73and Filippi scored 74, 76, 74 and 70.

This marks the first time that three SouthAfrican juniors finished in the top 10 sincethe Italian International u.16 championship

launched in 2007. “It really is a remarkableaccomplishment,” said South African GolfAssociation golf integration manager andteam manager, Eden Thompson.

“Haydn Porteous won this event in 2008,Tristen Strydom tied for second in 2011 andHaydn, Yubin Yung and Kyle McClatchiewere joint third in 2008, 2007 and 2013 respec-tively.

“Over the last eight years, we had fourpairs who finished in the top 10, but this isthe first time three of our juniors managedthis rare feat.”

Thompson said the trio were determinedto better their debut performances in 2014and delivered on their promise.

“Luca tied for 11th last year, but HermanandLukebothmissed the cut. They returned

with great attitudes and a lot of resolve. Theguys all knuckled down in the final roundand tried to get everything from the course,even if at times to their own detriment.

“Herman, Luke, Luca and our fourth play-er, Wilco Nienaber, displayed fantastic ca-meraderie and sportsmanship, and alt-hough Wilco missed the cut in his first starthere in Italy, he was unwavering in his sup-port in the third roundandeven carriedHer-man’s bag in the final round.All fourplayersrepresented SA, SAGA and their familieswith distinction and I congratulate them.”

Leo carded rounds of 70, 71, 72 and 72 andclaimed a four-stroke victory over ViktorHagborg-Asp from Sweden to lift the Teodo-ro Soldati Trophy with a score of seven-un-der-par 285.
