WELCOME TO THE LIONS ROAR!Welcome to the first edition of the Lions

Roar. As we move away from 2011 and

towards our 50th Anniversary as a rugby club

there is a lot of behind the scenes

movements. A new committee is working

hard to try and improve all aspects of the

club. Our new committee consists of thefollowing people, all of whom are willing to

be contacted and approached to hear about

new ideas and any issues that you may

    have.

    Committee members include:

Tristan Jones, Dave White, Ian Crothers,

Tony Hannay, Shane Mutch, Marty Harris,

Adam Perring, Carl Bylsma, Adam Craven,

    Leslie Read and Gary Millhouse

    A separate 50th anniversary committee

consists of Ross Storey, Murray Kier and

    Lindsay Cooke.

These two committees have regularly been

meeting to plan out what is a big year for the

club. It is official that we will be playing in 3rd

division of the Suburban competition. Whilst

some may see this as a backward step, it

actually gives us a chance to use it as a

chance to rebuild and set some very clear

goals. One of these goals is to make sure

that we can promote a club that is enjoying

its rugby both on and off the field.

Our football sub committee is actively

looking to fill the 1st grade coaching position

and we are hopeful of being able to confirm

all coaching positions before Christmas. Our

sponsorship committee has re written a

sponsors proposal and this is being

    promoted through the business community.

Could I please ask you to look at the

attached proposal and feel free to promote it

to any contacts that you may have. See

    page 5 for more Information.

    Functions

The first of these will be the annual

Centurions and supporters evening. This will

be held at the Hornsby Inn on Friday 4th

November. With over 60 people already

attending, the evening promises to be good

chance to start discussions around the

Team of the Decades which wil l be

announced at next years Gala Ball.

A sponsors and supporters Golf Day will be

held atAsquith Golf Club on Friday 24th

February 2012. Teams of four wil l pay $400

which will include golf and a two course

dinner. Options of just attending the dinner

will be available so that partners can join the

evening presentation. For more informationcontact Adam Perring via email at

    [email protected]

Other planned events will include the Warner

vs Hudson Cricket game, Season launch,

Back to Hornsby Day, Ladies day and Gala

Ball. Whilst these are traditional events on

the calendar it is hoped that the playing

group can deliver some of their own social

events on a Saturday night. The committee

is very keen to hear from the players on

what type of nights they want.

    NORTHERN DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB

    New partnerships

In a change of focus from years gone by the Rugby club is

looking to build a relationship with Northern District Cricket

club. As joint occupiers of Waitara oval it is important that we

look at ways that we can improve the facility to the members

that use it. This is why the Rugby club has joined with the

cricketers to apply for the state government community grants

as an opportunity to improve the facilities at the ground.

Further to this partnership the cricket club has extended aninvitation to all rugby club members to attend the re naming of

Waitara oval to Mark Taylor oval. This is on Sunday 6th

November starting from 12.00pm where there will be BBQ

lunch two games of 20/20 cricket and the official re naming.

Please refer to the flyer below for more information.

RUGBY WORLD CUPWell what a World Cup we have all beentreated to in our off-season. Firstly let mecongratulate New Zealand on their wonderfulperformance. They have been truly the bestteam in the world over the past 4 years andhave long deserved another RWC title, even ifthey were not perhaps the best team on thenight. So what have we learnt from the worldcup this year leading forward to 2012 withanother season of rugby around the corner?

World Cup Final1. Who would have thought Donald would

become the accidental hero for the AllBlacks?

    2. The All Blacks No.10 spot suddenlyseems to have a curse on it with Crudengoing down as well. Apparently he will beready for the Super 15 next year.

    3. Will Richie become Sir Richie?

    4. The French must have downed some RedBull at half time as they came out as ateam possessed in the second stanza.Good on the French for wanting to movethe ball, it was in stark contrast to theirmatch the week before against the Welsh. The ABs looked a little spentfrom theirwinover Australia the week before.

    5. Richie McCaw should have been wearinga French jersey becausehe spent most ofhis time on their side of the ruck(and offhis feet) - Yes I know all the Kiwis willcomplain about this statement!!!

    6. How good is Israel Dagg? If hekeepsupperformances like this he willbecome anAll Black great.7. SBW who?

3rd Place Playoff1. A nice game to have in the lead up to the

final if you are a rugby nut - the teamsinvolved may not appreciate it

    2. It was an entertaining game, but theWallabies have paid the price for theirbronze medal including injuries to Cooper,McCabe and Beale. The first two bothlooking to miss at least 6 months as aresult.

    3. Wales were a little flat, and like NZ,probably played their final the week

before (with only 14 men to add to thefatigue)

    4. It has been suggested by a number ofpeople that Plate/ Bowlfinals shouldalso run in parallel with the knockoutstages of the competition. This wouldgive the smaller nations theopportunity to play more top flightteams.

    5. Finally a suggestion did the roundsabout scrapping 3 v 4 and playing aSouthern Hemisphere v NorthernHemisphere Barbarians match? Wouldmake a great game I have to say!

Overall Tournament1. Fantastic event hosted by New Zealand -

who said they could not pull it off?2. Almost 1.5m people attended the

matches (above predictions)3. Record TV viewership in NZ and record

breaking payTV numbers in Australia.15m French watched the final. Even 9m

poms watched the Wales v Francegame.Nearly 65,000 Welsh fans showedup to Millennium Stadium to watch theirteam play the Semi Final. Gates openedat 7:30am and alcohol was availablefrom9am - got to love the Welsh

    4. The gap continues to narrow between Tier1 and 2 nations. With more matchesbetween the levels, the better thesesmaller teams will get

Tournament Awards1. Best Team - The All Blacks - finally made

the dream a reality2. Most Improved Team - Definitely the

Welsh. Very unlucky not make the final3. 3) Most Disappointing Team - England(but not many people will be upset aboutthat). The next most disappointing wouldbe Ireland for not going on with it afterbeating Australia in the pool round

    4. Best Tier 2 team - Well done to Georgia. Itis amazing how well they compete giventheir playing numbers and lack ofconstant quality opposition.

    5. Best Try - Well in the end I could not makea decision though

    6. Best Team - refer to below fromplanetrugby

    7. Biggest Upset - Tonga's win over France

    8. The Unluckiest Team - Samoa

    15 Israel Dagg (NewZealand)Next best: Kurtley Beale(Australia)

14 Cory Jane (New Zealand)Next best: Vincent Clerc (France)

13 Ma'a Nonu (New Zealand)Next best: Manu Tuilagi (England)
