Hi Everyone

Well, we finally got to present Bob with his Melvin Jones Fel-lowship at the last meeting. Bob and Deborah have had a hardtime of it lately and it was good to be able to cheer them up abit with the presentation of this prestigious award. I saw themagain at the District Governor visit at Sussex Inlet Lions andBob was still a bit (somewhat! - Ed) overwhelmed by it!

We had a Zone Meeting at Ulladulla on Sunday 25th August.Joan, Marie-Anne and myself attended. It was a relatively short

(2hr) and uneventful affair, and we will discuss the matters raised at our meeting.

About 7 or 8 of us also went to the DG visit at Sussex Lions on Monday 26thAugust. It was a relaxed and enjoyable night, and I stayed behind and had a goodchat with President Wendy who is very straightforward and friendly.

I also had the honour of laying a wreath onbehalf of our Club at the Voyager Park Memorialon Vietnam Veterans Day. It was a bit windy andonly a small attendance but all went well.

Sue and Wendy were also there, and Sue’s Raygave a very interesting address.

Jeff has organized some new brochures aboutLions and our club in particular, and a couple ofnew banners. We hope to put these to good usein our membership drive, starting this weekend at Spring into Sanctuary Point. Hehas also managed to ‘ become ‘ a member of the Shoalhaven River Festival com-mittee. I’ll let him explain it all at the meeting.

We have committed ourselves to doing the Sanctuary Point Carols this Xmas onSaturday 7th December, as well as our regular Vincentia Carols on Thursday 19thDecember. I think it’s a good chance to let the Sanctuary Point and St GeorgesBasin populace know who we are, what we do, and that they can join us. It was sadto see Sanctuary Point Lions fold, but we have to use this opportunity to gain somemore workers!

As most of you know, we’ve been asked to be involved in a car show at Husky onSunday 6th October. This and many more marvellous things will be discussed atthis meeting on Thursday 5th September. See you there!

JustAsk! - New Member Recruiting Guidefor Clubs

INTRODUCTION

Just Ask! is designed to guide yourclub through the process of recruitingnew members and effectivelymanagingclub growth.

The strength of your membership and thehealth of yourclub willdetermine yourability to do whatallLions love to do – serve. So keep in mind that moremembers mean more service.

Although the concept is simple– just ask community members to join – this guidewillhelp you preparean effectiveoutreach plan so you aresuccessfulwhen you’re ready to ask.

Just Ask!willlead yourclub through a four-step process forrecruitingnew members:

1. Preparingyour club

2. Creatingyour club’s growth plan

3. Implementingyour club’s growth plan

4.Welcoming yournewmembers

STEP 1: PREPARE YOUR CLUB

The first step to inviting newmembers to join yourLions club is to get your club ready.

• Decide what you want your club to be.

• What does your club want to focus on?

• Whatdo your members wantyour club to be?

• How do you envision your club nextyear? Fiveyears from now?

• Identify what you wantyour club to accomplish.

• What typeof service projects does your club want to conduct?

• How often?

• Where?

• Decide what your goals are.

Use the Recruiting Goals form in this guide to defineyour club membership goals.Be sure toconsider hownew members will fit in with your objectives.

• Why does yourclub want new members?

Before you begin inviting newmembers, it is important to identify why.The answershould beclear, tangible and relevant, not simply “for more service.”For example:“If wehad 3moremembers, wecould pack100 more lunches for the homeless each month.”

• Who are your target members?

Are they younger members, women, communityprofessionals, parents of Leos, family membersorfriends?Yourclub may have more than one target group.Keep in mind thatwhen recruitingnew members, it often works best to recruit a group of 2-4people.

Membership - Building our Club - Just Ask!

• Who will help your club recruit?

Although everyone in your club should beencouraged to help recruitnew members,a member-ship development team should be selected to guide the recruitment effort. Use the MembershipDevelopment Team form in this guide to organize your team. Each member has strengths andpreferences. Make the mostof theseby encouraging your members to takeon roles in therecruitingprocess. Important roles include:

Organizing – Some members are planners; they seeeach step and can prioritize whatneeds to bedone. TheseLions should focus on guiding yourclub’srecruiting effort.

Promoting – Tech-savvy and creative members can create brochures, issueyour pressreleases, and updateyour websiteand socialmedia networks.

Reaching Out – These are your Lions that like to talk, especially aboutyour club.Encourage them to promoteLions to your targetgroups and get them on thephone withprospectivenew members.

Welcoming – Lions who are trained to conduct newmember orientation and coordi-nate mentoringwill ensureyour newmembers feelwelcome and quickly settleinto yourclub.LCI provides training forboth orientation and mentoring.

STEP 2: CREATE YOUR CLUB’S GROWTH PLAN

In this step, you willcreate yourclub growth plan.Your organizingLions should take the lead in creatingthe plan. Include target dates for completion and assign tasks to each goal. The Club Growth Planform included in this guidecan serveas a template

Once your plan has been created, share it with your club members. Assign each taskto specificLions, and follow-up with them as needed to offerassistance and ensure the plan stays on schedule.

To help your club, this guide includes suggestions thathave worked for otherLions clubs. Feel free touse someof thesesuggestions orcome up with yourown ideas.

• Who willwe recruit?

Identify groups associated with your club’s target members. For thewidest reach, ask allyour membersto help think of potential sources. Here aresome additional tips:

•Consider usinglists thathave already been compiled.Look at organizations or businesses thatsharecommon interests with yourLions club.

• Ifyou conducted a Community Needs Assessment, don’t forget to ask your contacts tobecomeinvolved.

• Hold a brainstormingsession with your club members.Ask each member to write down thenames of three businesses, groups or organizations that focus on thesame areas your club doesservice in.

• Use the Recruiting Wheel in theback of this guide to help yourmembers thinkof people whomay be interested in joining theclub. Use the Build a Lions Network form in this guide tocollectthe information.

• Besure any list includes either aphysical address or emailaddresses, dependingon yourclub’s method of sending out invitations. Phone numbers are a plus for follow-uppurposes.

•Make personalvisits to localbusinesses and offices. Speak with the business owners ormanagers about their interest in joining, and ask for their permission to speakwith theiremploy-ees about joining.

• Where and when will we recruit?

Decide what recruiting activities best fit your club and community. The promotion Lions should take thelead in this area and prepare thematerials to use. Hereare somerecruiting suggestions:

• Hold an informationalmeeting. Inviteyour targetmembers and conduct ashort preparedprogram to let peopleknow whatyour club does and who they are. Serve light refreshmentsand be sure Lions areavailable to talkone-onone or in smallgroups.

• Sponsora community event or setup a booth at aspecial event. When recruiting at an event, prepare a standard 30 second to two minute speech about yourclub and its impact in thecommunity for yourmembers to use. If target members are interested in learningmore, directthem to your club website orsocialnetworkingsites. Ifyou havean informationalmeetingscheduled, providean invitation containingthe location, date and time to those who showinterest.

• Invite target members to aservice project. Be sure to have Lions available at the project tospeak with target members and answer questions, as well as providing service!

Visit the Lions Learning Centeron theLCI website to find online communication training courses tosupport yourrecruitment efforts.

• What materials will werecruit with?

Prospectivemembers willwant to see information about yourclub and the association. Before anyactive recruitingbegins, makesure to update yourclub’s websiteand any socialmediapresence, andhave currentmaterials ready.

LCI offers a widevariety of recruitingmaterials that explain membership and talkabout theassociation.Publications can be downloaded from theLCI websiteand printmaterials can be ordered via emailbycontacting LCI’s Membership and New Club Operations Departmentat [email protected].

The websitealso offers customizablematerials for clubs. You can download theClubBrochure Tem-plate or Be a Lion Brochureand use them to create personalized materials for yourclub.

In addition to printed materials, it is important foryour club to havean up-to-dateonline presence. Before attendingan informationalmeetingor deciding to join, target members will search the Internet forinformation aboutyourclub.

If your club doesn’t have a website, use the free e-Clubhouse toolto createone. Thee-Clubhouseprovides apreformatted website for even the least Internet savvy. It has a club home pagewith meetinginformation, calendarof events, club projects page, photo gallery and contact page.Allyourclub needsto do is add your information. As your club gets more comfortable with e-Clubhouse,you can addmore pages.Be sure the informationalmeetingis listed on yourclub’s calendar!

If yourclub has any social networking presence, be sure to update those sites regularly and advertisethe addresses. Bsure the informationalmeeting is promoted on these sites too.

Ask yourmembers to include their club activities on their personalsocialnetworking pages. TheSocialMedia 101 Best Practices Guide includes usefulinformation on socialnetworkingand bestpractices.

District ChangeoverOver the weekend of the 20/21st July yourEditor andhis good wife went down to Canberra (snow visible ontheBrindabella’s – definitely not the weatherfor BrassMonkeys). First off we had a 2012-13 “Wrap-up”District CabinetMeeting on Saturday at the SouthernCross Club at Woden wherea few bits and pieces were“wrapped up” in theafternoon and later thatnight wehad the District Changeoverat thesame venue.

Unfortunately Jervis Bay did not feature in any of theClub Awards handed out, in fact there weren’t too manyClubAwards handed out at all on the night. It wasmainly ahand claspingand self-congratulatory exercise forDistrict Chair ’persons’. Therewere acouple ofMJF’s handed out, one to a nurse from down Canberra way, and the other to thebloke whoruns theYouth Camp. There werea fewWynn Tyson and William Tresise awards given to the DistrictExecutives – richly deserved because I feel that theDistrict Executivedid wellduring lastyear – and ofcoursesome specialmention forJohn Flarrety (Cabinet Secretary) – that ended with tears from the DGand the CS!The nightwas quiteemotional from time to time, Garry teared up several times when hewas presenting the“big” awards, touching momentsrather than anythingelse.

Thenight was good, the food was good, and things moved along wellwith somegood timeavailable for“mingling”. Oh,and therewas acertain ZoneChairman who did gethimself aDistrict StarAward, amost surprised ZC who didn't really think hehad done too much over the year -still doesn't!

Scottish Cow

The only cow in a smalltown in Ireland stopped giving milk.

Then the town folkfound they could buy a cowin Scotland quite cheaply.

So, they brought thecow overfrom Scotland.

It was absolutely wonderful, it produced lots of milkevery day and everyonewas happy.

They boughta bull to matewith the cow to getmore cows, so they’d neverhave to worry about theirmilksupply again.

They put the bullin the pasturewith thecow but whenever thebull tried to mount the cow, thecowwould move away.

No matterwhat approach thebull tried, the cow would moveaway from the bull, and he was neverable to do the deed.

The peoplewere very upset and decided to go to the Vet, who was very wise, tell him what was hap-pening and askhis advice.

“Whenever the bulltries to mount ourcow, shemoves away. Ifhe approaches from theback, shemoves forward. When heapproaches herfrom the front, shebacks off. Ifhe attempts it from the oneside, shewalks away to the other side.”

The Vet rubbed his chin thoughtfully and pondered this beforeasking,

“Did you by chance, buy this cowin Scotland?”

The peoplewere dumbfounded, since no one had ever mentioned that they had brought thecow overfrom Scotland.

“You are truly awise Vet,” they said. “How did you knowwe got the cow from Scotland?

The Vet replied with a distant look in his eye: “My wife is from Scotland”

Ihave twomale talking parrots, whom Ihave taught to prayand read the Bible...Bring your two parrots over tomy house, and we’llput them in thecage withFrancis and Peter. My parrots can teach yourparrots to pray and worship, and yourparrots aresure to stop saying thatphrase in no time.’

‘Thankyou,’ thewoman responded, ‘this mayvery wellbe the solution.’The nextday, shebroughther femaleparrots to the priest’shouse....As he ushered her in, shesaw thathis twomale parrots were inside their cageholding rosarybeads and praying...Impressed, shewalked overand placed herparrots in with them...aftera fewminutes, the femaleparrots cried out inunison:Hi,we’rehookers!
