Albuquerque Breakfast Lions Hosts Mayor Martin Chavez At the August 5th meeting of the Albuquerque Breakfast Lions Club, Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez attended and spoke to the Lions. Mayor Chavez has recently announced he is running for re-election. The mayor spoke to the Lions about several issues (charter schools, crime, police and men-tal health). After he spoke he took questions from those in attendance. The mayor was candid and answered all the questions posed to him. The visit was enjoyable and informative to the club mem-bers. Pictured are New President Lion Rita Graham and Mayor Martin Chavez. Lion Rita is the owner of a local optical company, Casey Optical in Albuquerque. Provided by Lion Tony Bryce

Club News Lovington Lions News Lovington Lions Club Members and guests met on Saturday, Au-gust 1st at the home of Mike and Diana Donoho for their annual picnic for steaks and homemade ice cream. Lion Mike Donoho was chosen as “Lion of the Year” by his fellow Lions of Lovington Lions Club. Mike serves as Secre-tary, Glasses Chairman, Nursing Program and co-chairman of the flag committee. District Governor Rosa Doporto presented the award to Mike.

Lion Jesus Rodriguez is shown participating in the Flag Retire-ment Ceremony which was conducted at a recent picnic for Lov-ington Lions Club. Lions Roy Robinson and Mike Donoho are in the background. Lovington Lions provide a flag service for local businesses by placing flags on holidays. Worn out flags must be retired properly by separating the union (stars) from the stripes. The stripes are then placed in the fire, followed by the union.

Jeanette Miller Honored with Melvin Jones Award Who is that standing behind Santa Fe Capital City Lion and PDG Jay

Miller? Can’t see her as usual, but who else, but his partner in service, Jeanette

Miller, who is not just the hostess with the mostest, but a force in her own right.

The July 12,2009 Santa Fe New Mexican reported the following in the CELEBRATIONS Section, Faces and Places: JEANETTE MILLER of Santa Fe was honored with the Melvin Jones

Award from the Santa Fe Capital City Lions Club. This was the first time the award was given to a non-Lions Club member. Jeanette was honored for being a partner-in-service during her husband, JAY MILLER’S, ca-reer in the Lions. Jeanette Miller’s volunteer activities included being a docent for the Palace of the Governors, being the presi-dent of the Girls Club Auxiliary, now Girls Inc., and being a board member for the American Association of Uni-versity Women. She also helped with the creation of the state’s Children, Youth and Families Department and was the director of the Risk Reduction Division, which focused on prevention of teenage pregnancy and drug and alcohol abuse. The Las Vegas, N.M., native retired from the state government to become executive director of the New Mex-ico Children’s Foundation, which raised money for the community-based organizations providing programs for young people. We are very proud of Jeanette and wanted to recognize her contributions to the community, not just as the “invisible” support of Jay’s career in Lions on the club and state level, but as an important, caring person in her own right. She may not be an official Lion, but she is one of us. She is the epitome of the Lion’s logo, “We Serve.”

The official visit to Raton was with PDG Chuck Easton along with 1st VDG Bill Guss and PCC John and Judith Gov. Elect Goodchild. PDG Chuck Easton installed the new officers and pre-sented awards to the members. After the busi-ness of the meeting, a treasure from their attic was displayed with a story about the family his-tory dating back two generations. The quilt of many colors made from the different patterns of materials. Sewn into the material are dates and names of family members. We were in awe of the story and the beautiful quilt. An article from the attic with a story if often on the agenda. Lots of fun!

Lions Bobby Villegas, Jose Luis Hernandez, and Del Carmona went to Carlsbad on Satur-day, August 8th and made a presentation to the individuals who had called in and shown an interest in forming a S.O.Y. Mariachi Lion’s Club and school. They gave a 5 to 10 minute power point presentation, explaining our mission and what our plans are for developing S.O.Y. Mariachi Lion’s Clubs throughout New Mexico first and then the rest of the country. There were over 15 families represented at the meeting, which was held at the American Legion Hall in Carlsbad. The American Legion has jumped in and offered their building for the school. Hopefully, the last weekend in September, which is September 26th, we hope to have a mini concert in the morning, have lunch, and then have workshops. As soon as plans are set, more information will follow. Provided by Lion Edubina R. Morales
